This is odd. Two xAK lost "while building" at Kwalalein. That's very strange, since there is no shipyard there!!

Were they pierside repairing?

The Allies have 285 fighters currently listed by recon at Shikuka, well down from 850 a few weeks ago. Only about 20 bombers and 20 auxiliary listed now compared to 400 and 300 respectively before the bombardments.

So, they are all in toyohara? Much smaller AF ... closer ...

My guess is that the longer-legged ones transferred out. If the airfield wasn't closed, many of the SR1 fighters were probably in 'ready' status the next day and with drop tanks could make the jump back to the Aleutians.

That base shows only 15 auxiliary. Shikuka was never closed, so after the 550+ airframes destroyed in bombardments and air strikes, I assume he flew the ones that could out to the Aleutians, left the others, maybe shuttled them continually back and forth on the rail? Who knows.

No, nothing has visited there or been stationed there in a long while. Since two game partners ago really!

Torsten went for Marcus in October 43, and that was the last time I used these bases for search and recon, but after thatI began to evacuate the ground forces and let them go to seed with whatever supply was in base.

Sept 8, 1944

The Allies find our fighters at Pegu and sweep them with everything they have. Surprisingly, they do well, getting about 1:1.5 on the day (about 60 A to A kills to about 90 losses, of course over our base though, so IJ pilot losses are very low). I'll pop them over to a suddenly patched up Rangoon for tomorrow to see if continues sending unescorted bombers in. This area is mysterious to me. It feels like he's trying to keep my attention while planing a decisive move behind these forces. I'm in a scaled retreat, but I'd just love one more shock across a river here to wreck some Allied troops before pulling back farther.

Wotje is taken as the Allies pour in more troops. A few ships may be in trouble from the 15cm CD gun hits landed.

I'm considering another bombardment run to Shikuka. I will only have two CAs and two CLs available to lead the rush in front of the BBs, plus of course about 50 Es, PBs, MTBs and SCs. I'll not send in lots of subs this time around, but I'm sure the Allies have beefed up and added to existing minefields at Shikuka. The rollover also shows a lot of 1 ship TFs in hex, so I could be facing 20-30 single PT boat TFs, which I have no idea if our forces would be able to bombard around.

He's using SCs now on patrols that were once DEs and DDs, so I think the decent escorts are now limited ad probably with the cruisers that are left. There should only be about 3-4 CA/CL here now, and no BBs. I also see some AK and TK indicators, which might mean he's been keeping fuel and supply on ships in port so it can't be depleted by bombardments, and is now offloading it. Interesting.

Shikuka: What's left

Before I crash my remaining IJN forces into a field of new mines many miles deep, I thought I'd take a look at what is there now. How would I know?

Well, I went through the past 9 days of combat reports and looked for every ship that took part in every battle and every hit it took. A bit mind numbing but also really informative, and I wish I'd done it after each turn. I learned that more ships were sunk for the Allies than I'd thought (and of course more than have yet made the lists) but also that there are a few more operational DDs than I'd thought.

The Allies did have a substantial force here, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have gotten through on Sept 1. Here is a list of all ships and their damage.

Right now it looks like a CL TF with Nashville and a somewhat damaged Santa Fe will be patrolling, and possibly CA Astoria. At least 17 DD, and probably more like 21 DD, many of them Fletchers, will be available. (It looks like about 20 were sunk). Only 4-6 DE will be there. PT boats seem endless, and there are hundreds for sure. How many do the Allies have at this point in the war, though?

Well, considering there are 500-some PT boats for the USN and this is late 1944... several hundreds.

Just through search and recon I can count about 50 in roughly ten TFs now outside Shikuka. As the moonlight gets lower again, this looks prohibitive along with the Fletchers and the mines and the subs. I might hang for a bit and see what he does. If he resumes the bombing campaign then it may be worth it regardless to get another hit on 4E on the ground.

Sept 9, 1944

On the 9th the Allies sweep Pegu but continue to strike at Rangoon with some 4Es. Good timing for my reintroduction of fighters there. This shell game moving fighters around these three bases in Burma has been fun, and he's essentially let me decide so far when and how to engage. I can take turns off to recover my service 3 airframes and then pop back in at near full strength.

Today around 20 more 4E were shot down, mostly the main production variant, the B-24J. I'm guessing that the pools are now getting depleted, and this won't help him catch up. Dan seems to use whatever he has, regardless of if groups are filled out or smaller, which can work to my advantage as the Allied groups are already smaller. I'm seeing a lot of 11-16 sized fighter sweeps, even from USAAF groups that should be 25 strong. None of the RAF groups are sweeping with 16.

He's also started bombing from 28k to avoid flak. This of course means the runs will be much less effective. A few planes this turn were still hit by the high ceiling 12cm guns.

Two Aussie brigades have walked into Hollandia. I'd evacuated most of what was there, but have now flown a garrison unit in to hold the base. With 6 forts and 12k supply, it'll be a while to wear this down. I'll put one more SNLF unit in to shore it up further. I don't want anything, even down here, to be too easy if I can stall it without too much effort or loss.

Sept 10, 1944

Well, Nicks are trying occasionally to strike at 100ft now. They got 1 PT Boat today!

I've been sweeping to limit or suppress bleeding CAP but he's kept it strictly to 0 hex lately. I'll keep the low level FB attacks going, but might add some naval strike planes to the mix to see if they get more, or fly more often.

Bombardments near Prome look by the reports to be disabling Japanese squads. When I get the turn and check every unit is at 100% with no disablements. Interesting.

Moonlight is diminishing so I pulled back my flotilla of floating fodder until the conditions are better.

Find a squadron flying a naval bomber with forward mounted cannons(Frances comes to mind)...and strafe/bomb with them?

I'll try it. Sure.

The Nicks have low naval skilled pilots but they seem to still not fly much.

For whatever reason, the best strafing PT boat plane I ever used was Zeroes. No clue why.

Experiment, it is the joy of the game! And keep us posted.

The Frank Ki-84b will probably be very good with CL 20mm and the wing mounted ones.

I don't know why I didn't try Jakes yet. I find they do really well against small craft because of the 4 bombs and no low level penalty like 2E.

Sept 11-14, 1944

These turns have become very quiet. The Allies continue to build Shikuka fighter groups and the rollover now shows 850+ fighters. The PTs are hanging one hex out, and our F and FB have been going. Got a lot of 20mm hits from A6M and Nicks once I put in the high strafe skill pilots. Not sure how damaging those hits are.

On the 12th the sweeps in Burma did hit our CAP, and the Spits and Lightings suffered at first, but wore the CAP down so later P-47s did well. The Allies get about 1.5:1 on the day, but I'll have to move out and reorganise groups. I want to add some N1K5 anyway, so this is a good chance to do that.

Recon by Myrts shows a lot of bombers at Adak, and lots of TFs.

No big things to report on otherwise.

Even though this looks dominating, compared to a few months ago, there are many fewer groups, and many more incomplete groups. I get the sense that if I keep this going for another month, there won't be many P-47s left, the Spit VIII will be depleted, and the Allies will have to use Corsairs exclusively for a while until the Mustang shows up in November.

One advantage I've seen in the past of using fighter/bomber squadrons for conventional LowNav attacks is that they occasionally decide to go for the kamikazie attacks without the squadron being converted to a kami squadron.

While not much use against PT boats, it can be quite nice when Nicks or some such come across a squadron of DD's and ram a few.

This just begins to happen in the late war automatically, I think. Well, I think it can happen anytime, but the chance for it to occur increases as the war goes on.

I haven't seen any of these yet, but soon I'm sure they'll begin showing up. Ramming bombers is sometimes not my favourite use of 80exp pilots, though.

Lots of little 2 ship TFs now prowling closer to the Kuriles. I'm curious. It seems he may be setting pickets for a move soon to come. The subs seem to be creeping closer too. I've taken a lot of ASW off to use for bombing Shikuka, but I'll get it back to ASW now.

I've set some Judy D4Y1 to see if with their long range I can hit a few of these just for fun.

Some more of these down near Marcus. I hope he goes for it. All ready and waiting for invasion #3. The first two didn't go so well in this game.

These are in Jake range, so I've got a 24 plane group down there set to low naval.

Here is Shikuka. Holding steady at 800+ fighters for now. Not enough bombers to be a threat yet.

DISPERSAL!

Dispersion really is the key factor in late '44 air defense. If he decides to throw a couple hundred 4E's at, say Sapporo, then you're going to have a lot of shattered groups. Sure, he won't take out all 708 aircraft, but he'll wreck their morale.

I'd move out all the strike craft and leave a couple hundred fighters. You have the aviation support in place to surge in the strike craft when you want to attack. To beat that 800 plane CAP you need to throw in the kitchen sink, but that doesn't mean you need to carry it around with you all the time.

I think you've enough good naval search for at least two days warning, so that's an abundance of time to surge planes in!

He has hit a few airfields and done some serious damage. That was early in the process, and I've (hopefully) learned just this lesson!

All IJAAF 2E are back in Tokyo. A good number of 1E are in Ominato, but are being dispersed gradually. After the major bombardments and the resulting 250-300 4E destroyed, the numbers won't be there to do the same kind of strikes he was able to mount for another few months.

Sapporo is pretty able to take care of itself now. he did try a daylight strike there recently and lost about 40 4E even after throwing everything he could into sweeps. The low CAP is pretty durable over a day or two and I can rotate groups in easily.

Right now I'm not going to sweep or strike at Shikuka by air. I'll wait for the moon and see if I want to try again with the IJN. The flak is so heavy it doesn't make sense to tackle it unless I know there are no fighters left or the field is closed.

Nicks and a few other fighters keep pecking away at the PTs. The Judys do find their prey, and as expected it's two YMS pickets.

Down South the shell game is keeping damaged fighters away from Allied bombing, and they're slowly repairing while a few other groups upgrade in Bangkok.

Near Prome the Allies try a sudden (and unprepared ) DA, with no aerial bombing ahead of time. It doesn't go well for them. It looks like it's just armoured units, and the incredibly experienced IJA units handle it easily. They're all dug in with forts 2 in this x2 terrain, and have good supply. There are a few IDs with mid-90s EXP here, and some good arty.

The Allied units lose about 130 devices outright, plus around 570 disabled. Mostly vehicles.

About 300 AV taken off the Allied forces here near Prome. The Japanese will hold for now.

Up North I'm noticing all kinds of TFs now at Shikuka. Curious if they're out to deflect any bombardment attempts, or unloading, or minelaying, or all of the above?

Nothing else happening.

After the past few turns the Allies seem to be moving everywhere in Burma. Threatening to still cross from around Bassein and Prome, moving units from near Prome to South of Toungoo, and shocking across the river to South of Toungoo with three armoured units, where our stack kicked them hard.

The Allies did lower forts at Toungoo with a DA, but take the worst of the moderate disablements. I'm flying a few more troops in as the Allies seem to be walking more across as well. About 300 bombers a day are hitting Toungoo troops keeping the disruption up a bit, but also losing 5-7 a day to flak. This base is completely superfluous, and I hope to time a withdrawl so that I can get the most out of the forts and terrain, but not get the very experienced ID trashed.

I'll try a LR CAP on the 24th to see if these fighters, all rested up, can get to the bombers at all. Lots of sweeps still here, and LR CAP is not as effective for low CAP.

I could kick these armoured units out and probably destroy 1-2 of them, but I'm wary of the other Allied units appearing on that turn. I'm happy to let him come and give it a try. More AA here, and the adjusted defence of the river crossing was huge!

Sept 24-26, 1944

A few days to catch up on here.

The Allies are bombing with everything they have now in Burma. Sweeps aren't really huge, but I can't make much of an impact either. On the 24th I tried a LR CAP at Toungou that didn't work. The Allies got 2:1 on the day. Then it was back to a few days of rest and filling the groups out again.

On the 25th the Allies tried a DA at Toungou, but it only got a 1:12. I'll consolidate with a few more added troops here. I don't think he's got enough in any one spot to force a retreat any time soon. He's relying on the air force to disrupt and work down supply, but that isn't happening or anywhere near happening right now.

On the 26th the Allies go back into serious sweep mode in the North. This is all good for the Japanese. The defenders do well, getting a 1:1 until some late sweeps push the Allies to a slight positive. Their pilots have to be suffering though, as all of the combat is over our bases now. I sense a growing tension again in the North, and as the light increases, I'll prepare for another try at Shikuka. I'd like to give it a shot being prepared to lose a few BBs and lots of DDs and smaller craft. The possible strategic and VP gains would be huge, and the inevitable losses don't concern me much as long as the Allies lose some too. At this point in the game it's about "what can I get for my soon to be destroyed forces?"

It looks like the Allies are still coming cross just South of Toungoo. I'm curious if this will still be a shock. If it is those units will suffer.

The Allies recommence bombing the Kuriles. I like this. It's not a strategic target and I can pounce when I choose later. So far a lot of damaged and a few downed 4Es to ops losses. Only two bases still to get to forts 6 here, and I think they'll make it. It depends on how early the Allies move back in with CVs. It seems a sure thing that he'll go for more out here, but maybe I'm wrong? Maybe this is just suppression and a diversion, and the real target will be the HI, Korea and Manchuria. All potential targets are preparing.

A division and some other troops shock into the hex South of Toungoo. I would have expected a worse result for them getting a 1:72, but it'll take a while to recover, and this isn't enough to threaten the hex once healthy anyway.

The Allies land small force at Saumlaki. He wants another theatre open here, but this looks like a base force only. I'll try to get it back.

On the 28th a DA at Toungoo itself gets only a 1:13 and fails to further drop forts, which sit at level 4 now. Looking good for the moment.

I decided to send some feelers in near Chikuka to see what the Allies would send out. Tomorrow a major fleet will move up and toward what looks to be every ship type the Allies posses within 1-2 hexes of the base.
