My experience as well that the Atomic bomb mission gets through. Held off on it for the longest time due to fear of interception. When I pulled the trigger the lone squadron went in with no interception.

I think its hardcoded to get through. I imagine in real life the Japanese radar was not good enough to pick up a raid by only 2 or 3 B29s and they did not have enough fuel left to put up standing patrols just in case by August 45.

Wasn't it at day?

They detected it but assumed that it was a regular recon mission, not worth the fuel to intercept.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Summer called me into the garden to finish the work I've been meaning to do there for about a year. Getting close now so tapering off and getting back into this.

I'll give some short updates on the last few weeks to get to current.

August 8-12, 1945

Interesting few days.

The most important development is that the Allies crossed over at Singers. In spite of continuous bombing, low supply and some disrupted troops, the Japanese devastate the Allied armies. The Allies lose 1,783 devices with another 4k + disabled to only 211 destroyed for Japan and only around 1k+ disabled. It's a smashing blow to Allied hopes of getting this base easily or soon as the forts also did not go down during the shock over which only achieved a 1:5. A few more of these and the Singers defense might even pay for itself in VPs but certainly will in time gained. That was 446 to the Japanese and only 35 to the Allies.

The Allies keep poking Palembang, just enough to work down the service 3 fighters. I'll have to relent soon and move out to recover. The DEI will not be tenable once Palembang is no longer a viable airbase. I don't have the infrastructure to continue in other bases as most support and other units have been moved out. It's fine though as Java resources have gone to only 200k and should be gone soon and the fuel/oil situation should now last well into 46 with nearly 5k fuel and 300k oil in reserve and most of that in or transiting to Japan.

During all of these five days of turns there have been no more Strat bombing attempts after the recent hit on Kagoshima that was quite successful. A bit surprised. Although I've also experienced trouble getting strikes to fly in the north, so maybe it's weather. I've had bombers set to hit Voroshilov airfields where the Soviets have a gaggle of fighters sitting, and they won't fly.

The Soviets keep marching forward but haven't encountered our lines yet.

TOKYO NUKED!!!

A pic below of the damage from the hit on the 14th. Looks very light, although VPs accumulated to about 3k+ from the previous turn. Much less devastating than I'd feared. No air factories harmed that I can see, although I guess some factories must have been destroyed to have such a large VP count. I'd have to look at a before and after to work it out, but feel fine about it so may not take the time.

On the 16th the Allies go back for another night strike on the industry of Nagasaki. It's moderately successful again in spite of NF presence and some losses to the B-29s. He also uses some of the beasts to hit fields here, but from 28k!! They actually do get hits on the airfield and destroy a handful of airframes on the ground.

Big sweeps follow the next day, but somehow the CAP gets the upper hand even against the Corsairs, which are usually the mop-up crew. No day strikes followed, which was good since the sweeps eventually wore out the CAP.

Some night strikes at Nagasaki that were moderately affective, but NF did their job.

Soviets push forward, nearing the edge of Japanese controlled areas. I'll begin pulling back further soon.

Bombing continues to cripple Singapore. I think the base will begin to crumble soon. I've been getting a few pieces out to protect other bases in the DEI for later, since they'll have supply at least. I'm gearing up for the general pullback of all air groups and transports/tankers. The KB will also head back to the Home Islands beginning sometime around the turn of Sept. Dan is too careful and there are no opportunities worth using it for here. Better get it back while I can. Supported by LBA it could still be effective there, maybe.

Still some para drops in the SRA and some bombing at Palembang means I'll likely abandon that airfield. The KB is resting near Balikpapan defending that airspace while tankers pull.

Oops! Mixed this one up with the one against Lowpe.

Looks like CR needs some CEs at Singers to make any headway.

Yeah, I was shocked the forts didn't drop in the first attacks.

August 20-22, 1945

A massive strike on Changchun. Got to some B-29s but lost a lot of planes on the ground. Nothing too important, but it's a VP win day for the Allies.

The Allies invade Chefoo. The race forward with tanks into Central China now that more troops from the South have arrived. Still no moves toward the Center though.

August 23-24, 1945

A brute couple of turns in the air over Japan. The allies send in night strikes and day sweeps and strikes over Hiroshima, Matsuyama and Shimoneseki. The sweeps are mostly Corsairs and Bearcats and devastate the air defenses before wave after wave of 4E arrive, mostly well-escorted. Matsuyama loses an Ha-45 factory, but luckily I have a big surplus of these important engines. A lot of resources are wiped in all bases and Simoneseki fires get almost to 300k!!

The Japanese take a tithe in the end, but it's an Allied positive set of turns for sure. Hard fought points, but Strat bombing is the way forward for sure for him. It's a scramble to get healthy planes in the air after a few days like this over Japan as well.

On the 25th the Allies go for Nagasaki with only sweeps. The Japanese are strong there and hold them off for a 2:1 on the day with heavy losses to Corsairs. That evens out the previous two days in the air a bit but the Strat losses mount as fires continue to burn.

Somehow the Soviet DDs come down near Chichi-Jima with a couple of xAKs. Odd. Strikes fly and sink at least three and maybe one more as well as the two transports, which aren't carrying troops.

The Allies heavily bomb and take Kweiteh with their forward tank units moving NW in China. I'll try to get a small army up toward Sian in the x3 terrain. It's a risk, but could stall a much larger force here. I'm also moving some Burma veteran divisions toward Chungking and the Northern part of the plains to defend against an eventual incursion there. There are also some Soviets marching down from Urumchi, and although I've got a few brigades up there I'll fly in 1-2 more to defend the North. These are high value VP bases and I'd like to keep them, or at least make sure it's a good fight.

Singers is down to 5 forts and is about to crack.

A few small actions around the map and lots of bombing of ground troops I China and at Singers. The Allies are moving steadily now across lower Sumatra and para-dropping to cut Soerabaja from Batavia on Java. I'm fine with that, as I've stopped pulling from Java and will try to get the last few resource and fuel shipments from Balikpapan before the eventual pullback to Japan of all fleets. I should have enough fuel to last now, but resources will be a problem.

The DD Wizard which had just been raiding shipping lanes is found and sunk. Hard to hit the single ship TFs still. Got this one.

Kind of a funny note. The Madras Police unit are marching down from Western China toward Lanchow. Good time to steal Tuk-tuk back home.

No more Strat bombing over Japan.

Another small attack at Singers lowers forts further and it should fall in the next major attack. The Allies are being very careful after earlier losses, but with no supply left, the IJA can do little now.

An Allied TF strayed near Batavia and Judys put it under along with some Allied troops.

The Soviets force a bridgehead at Yingkow and now the masses will flow down the coast. All upper Manchurian bases will be abandoned, and I'll hope to get the 15k AV Manchurian Army back to four x3 hexes in Korea from Keijo to Genzan. It'll be interesting. Harbin falls but it was only intended as a speed bump.

Singapore is falling.

On the 3rd the Allies start massive strikes with 500+ 4E, about half of those B-29s, against defending IJA troops at Yinkow. After three days, a few meek attempts at defense, and crushing Soviet attacks, the Allies are ready to take the base and unlock Korea. All IJA units are moving to retreat to the peninsula. We'll defend between Keijo and Genzan. Hopefully it'l take a few attacks in that good x3-4 territory to get through.

Singers finally falls, and all ships pull back to Babeldaob from the SRA except for the last filling up.

Resources and supplies are dropping quickly now. At this rate I think I'll be out by the end of 45.

Hard lessns to learn when you see 45 every 4-5 years! Makes it tough to learn and get it right. This time I'm suffering for resources, not fuel. Maybe the key is that it'll always be something. There is no perfect Japanese endgame economy.

That is why, even though I am playing Japanese against the computer, I am trying to bring back all of the resources that I can. They don't expire nor can they be destroyed.

I have never played the IJ .. and only 4 campaign games against opponents.. but it is my thought that the end game begins at the start. Not that this game followed. A formula but my observations are that the KB and company roam around destroying things and then 1945 happened and Japan lacks fuel supplies and resources. It is like a 401k where everything starts day one and the rainy day is July 1945 ..

Well, I think you are correct: you will be short something before the others … I think the key is that it isn't much before you would be short of most of the others as well.

September 6-9, 1945

After the breakthrough in Manchuria, the Allied air forces decided to focus on China. Ground troops are heading Northwest toward Sian, and they begin to soften up troops I've been sending ahead to get into the x3 territory up there. I managed to get about 1,500AV onto the road without too much destruction, but the stragglers are being hit hard. Some more intense fights in the air.

Seeing some new airframes which is cool. The Bearcat is a beast!!

It seems now like my fuel will be good until the end. Especially with less ships moving around. The Northern strategy cut off a lot of resources early and I didn't really look at that early enough to build a bigger pool.

Resources also take a big hit from Manpower bombing as they're usually the largest group of points at any big base on the home islands, and thus burn up first.

The Allies continue to hit troops moving toward Sian and take Nanyang after my rear-guard division manged to get out relatively unscathed.

In Korea the Soviet forward tanks hit Heijo hard, and retreating troops are bludgeoned, but will make it out before a catastrophic collapse.

The Allies also bomb Northern Honshu and Hakodate on Hokkaido with everything they have. Not much industry to hit here, so I'm glad for the extra aircraft VPs as the defenders keep on doing well in spite of the onslaught. Can't stop the bombers from getting through, but they're still taking a tithe.

A few French cruisers enter the fray!

As a target well-defended Hakodate doesn't seem like a likely candidate, considering the small amount of industry here compared to many other bases in range. Maybe he's planning on a ground or amphibious assault and wants to get the points before that?
