Agree, but I took the "photo" after ordering it to move east out of the hex to recover.
It was definitely in combat mode for the attack.

Palembang was captured with no damage to industry!

Extremely important, a big hurdle crossed.

Edit: Now don't let him bomb it!!!

Got this in an email from CrackSabbath:

"Perhaps you're getting this info b/c the Communications Officer @ Palembang failed to destroy his communiques before the Japanese Army showed up at his door. Anyway, my intention was to try for "Fortress Palembang," and to that end I had a pretty sizable group of LCUs en route. Twice I had to run away just before they arrived as your CV task force paraded up and down the Java Sea. The 2nd time was enough, and they've now gone elsewhere as they'd do me no good with Davy Jones"

I've been half expecting 18th UK Div and the Aussie Divs to show up soon, I haven't snuck a look at another game to see exactly when they arrive on the map, but from playing as the allies before my guess is that he's referring to the 18th UK.

This information doesn't change any of my plans as they could have been diverted to anywhere from India to NW Australia, so one guess is as good as any other. As my Intelligence Staff are unable to decipher allied codes, all I can do is use air recon and naval search to keep looking into the information void, but they are limited by range.

I have about 4 x AA Regts, one Oscar and one Zero unit flying CAP at Palembang already.
I hope he does try to bomb Palembang tomorrow so I can shoot some bombers down!

I didn't get much of a chance to review the game before work this morning, so was wondering all day HTF so many IJA squads were disabled at Wenchow. Apart from the 50% losses to 19th Division, who I think had just arrived in hex so probably had no field forts, at first glance everyone else looked to be in pretty good shape. Fast forward to Friday evening and I get a chance to take a closer look...

Following orders, COL Takeda threw the 2nd Independent Mixed Regiment at the city walls.

One Bn destroyed outright, two Bns wounded. Not even a single infantry section can be mustered at 2IMR roll call that evening.
Lesson learnt from this (again, because I already knew this!) is to avoid including units that lack combat engineers in assaults on fortified objectives. I can't fault the courage of these 1s and 0s, they just didn't have any sappers to follow.

Your unit is in 'move' mode. Not good for combat.

BTW, that unit is now prime for 'buying out' (will load on ships). I find such units to be useful in defense of certain island.

Good point, thanks for the reminder. This unit was on my list to buy out later to Southern Army anyway so it could combine to become the 44th IMB.
The cost of doing that has reduced from about 430 political points to 190.
I have higher priorities for PP at the moment, but if I leave this unit with "no replacements" for a while I will buy out before setting replacements to on.

Move modes, the manual should have something like the following:
Strategic move is for rear areas, for IJA it means railway movement. It takes 1-3 days to pack and load on the train then another 1-3 to unload and reorganise back into combat mode at the destination. The benefit is that many hexes can be moved in one day once the troops are on the train. Something like 8, but don't quote me on that bit.
Move mode is non-tactical movement. Think of it like forming up the troops into parade ground column and marching along the road. A bad situation for the troops if attacked by the enemy while in that formation.
Combat mode is tactical movement, so slower than forming up in columns and marching along the road or trail.
Rest/training means rest. Engineers won't help build anything and troops recover fatigue and disruption quicker than other modes.
Reserve. This keeps the unit out of the main assault but if the assault wins they pursue. I also use this mode when I want to keep a fatigued unit in the battle hex but want them to stay out of the main assault.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 92,38 (near Chengting)
Japanese Shock attack – A timing error occurred. I was meant to commit the units already in hex to a deliberate attack at the same time as the assault river crossing, but misjudged how far they would move… That would have gone close to 1:1 odds. Half the 26th Div is disabled as a result, but it has opened the hex side for the 36th Div to march across unscathed. The 26th Div will be placed in Reserve to recover as many troops as possible before the 36th Div arrives in about a week.
Attacking force 32254 troops, 285 guns, 84 vehicles, Assault Value = 1133

Japanese adjusted assault: 363
Allied adjusted defense: 105
Japanese assault odds: 3 to 1 (fort level 0) – I was not expecting to capture KL today or for the defenders to surrender outright, but there is no allied base left on Malaya without IJA troops in it so they had nowhere to withdraw to. Temuloh is the last allied base left on Malaya and the 55th Infantry Regt arrived there at the same time as this attack was launched.

Assaulting units:
33rd Division – could now rail north to Burma, but I decided to rail them to Johore Bahru to join the Singapore attack. If Singapore falls before the 33rd can get there, they will then be able to load onto ships and sail north to Burma, arriving on the Burma coast a lot quicker than if they had to march west out of Thailand. This image explains a few grumbles that are starting to be heard from GEN Terauchi's current operations staff at the Officers Mess. There are 10 operations currently in progress, although a few of them are close to completion and four of them have been delegated to the IJN.
The Ops Staff have also just updated their forecasts for when these operations will be completed.

Meanwhile, the Future Ops staff are thinking about doing a bit more work on the Borneo, Java and Banda Sea operations plans, but there's no real rush until the Current Ops staff wrap up the conquests of Malaya, Singapore, Sumatra and Mindanao.

Move mode is non-tactical movement. Think of it like forming up the troops into parade ground column and marching along the road. A bad situation for the troops if attacked by the enemy while in that formation.

thanks jdsrae. I'm okay with the rest but i never used this. that may be why my paratroopers behind enemy lines were so successful. i think my opponents had their units in move mode. i'll practice with it a bit.

The plan was to move her forward with CVEs Hosho and Taiyo so that Taiyo could help ferry and upgrade the Claude groups in 4th Fleet area, but I am wary of a USN CV raid into the Marshall Islands and don’t need to risk this CS or 2 x CVE so far forward right now.

i usually pull those units from the 4th fleet area back to truk or HI to resize for that very reason. even if i have to load them on AKs to do it.

You've got a lot of troops that will be ground down in Wenchow. While you're fighting and losing squads to disablements there he's digging into x3 territory.

I'd advise pulling out and moving to the centre, leaving Wenchow for the Chinese and keeping it disabled as an airbase. There's nothing he can really use it for anyway.

An easy China is dependent on quick movement, outrunning the Chinese hordes, and suppressing any Allied attempts to jump your bombing runs. As Japan the timing is everything. So to lose this 4 ID plus stack of troops for the next few months isn't going to help you at all.

I value your advice Obvert as you’ve no doubt seen this a few times before.
But GEN Hata is keen to remove this Chinese enclave and straighten up the front line, no doubt influenced by the personal shellacking he took from the Emperor a few months ago on his predictions for a quick end to the war in China.
I’ve committed to working with him and finding some joint assets to allocate from IGHQ to support the next attack.

Battle Division 3, Nagato and Mutsu with escorts, will move to Shanghai with a few SC Divs for close ASW protection.
I wanted to try and capture the industry undamaged, but if I can’t have the industry then I don’t mind if some gets damaged in capturing this city.

I will also refocus aerial bombardments to avoid the forts getting any higher than the current 2.

Moving in from the NW to flip that hexside are HQ CEA, HQ 13h Army and another fresh IJA Division.
The next attack will be about 1 week from now and will follow a few BB bombardment runs.

Something like 8, but don't quote me on that bit.

Rail movement is 5 hexes for a minor route, 10 for a major route. Route shown by the thickness on map.

BTW a unit who starts on a major route will move 10 hexes even if part of the path uses a minor rail line.

Wenchow is an expected holding point for the Chinese and allows the massive armies to the rear to dig and dig in more great x3 territory. The only benefit of using this much force to take it out now is that your IDs will be ground down and much cheaper to buy out after the months it will take to capture the base.

I believe this game allows for restricted units to cross borders without pp? In which case, Japan will not feel the temp absence of these units as much. Not totally painless, but the extra Manchuria assets should certainly help a lot in China.

Every little bit helps, and there is still a limit to what can leave Manchuria without activating the Soviets.

+1. And the costs of not having the forces where it matters, that is on the Chunking front, outweigh the possible benefits IMO. Wenchow can be suppressed relatively cheaply with naval bombardments and kept quiet in an encirclement with a couple IDs or even dug in brigades later, to not allow the revival of the southern Chinese army. If Chinese conduct an orderly withdrawal there at start, there seems to be no point rushing Wenchow because the battle is tough and the opportunity costs are high. Its industry is not worth the hassle.

The Chinese have already formed stacks of about 100k troops in complex terrain and are digging in. So how many IJA Divisions does it take to screen 100k Chinese riflemen?
I'm thinking three, but maybe that could reduce to two once they have a few forts?

The main benefit i see to clearing Wenchow in the next few weeks/month is that it would let me move all of 13th Army west and I wouldnt have to leave 33-50% of it screening Chinese troops in rear areas.
Once Wenchow falls, the plan is for 13th Army to join 20th Army to bypass Changsha and drive on Chungking.
I'm also threatening Sian in the north, to try and keep Chinese units in that area occupied so that they can't withdraw to Chungking in time to help defend it, or if they do they will be pursued by NCAA units.

5 x Kwantung Army Divisions have moved to China. The 1st, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th.
12th and 14th Divisions are still waiting at the border for Kwantung Army AV to rise enough for them to move out.

Not sure what you mean by screening?

Whatever he is doing, you can decide how to take advantage of weaker spots. You don't have to react to large Chinese armies doing anything, as they don't have the supply to initiate campaigns against you. Once they move out of their forts just bomb the crap out of them with your Sallys.

Take the 13th and bypass Changsha now!

What are the 1.5k AV of Chinese troops going to do, drive on Shanghai? There is nothing close to Wenchow, so any move will be met by bombing daily and the loss of over half of those troops by the time they get anywhere.

Then if you need to take a few more units from the HI that arrive or some from Manchuria and let the Chinese attack them, any IJA unit dug into x3 terrain will defeat a massive Chinese army at this stage (and most stages). I have several 5:1 AV deficits in 45 that the Chinese can't get close to breaking because they have very little firepower, engineers, arty or tanks.

You need to post some maps of China and we can help you a bit more. Opportunity cost, efficient use of force and speed are everything in the beginning while Japan has the invasion bonus.

The plan for China is on page 6. Things haven’t moved too far from that image yet.
I probably won’t get time to post another image until the weekend but will try to then.
By that time I may have captured Wenchow!

Topic for discussion at the IGHQ Mess this evening: What are the Armed Merchant Cruisers best used for?

In no particular order:
1. Amphibious task force flagship or embedded gunfire support ship as they have reasonable main gun armament. Not good against coastal defence guns though.
2. Single ship raiders against allied strategic logistics convoy routes. Probably not good in the Pacific where USN CVs lurk. Perhaps the Indian Ocean?
3. Picket ships somewhere like NEAF? Risky way to get some intel or cover some naval search gaps.
4. Others?

To me, raiders for a short time early in the game. Some even carry mines.

Later on as transports are they are better than xAK.

And then later IIRC one or two convert to AR's.

I’m happy with how Luzon is going.
GEN Mac tried to defend all three of Clark, Manila and Bataan about equally and didn’t react or adjust once my extra 2 x Divs showed up.
If I hadn’t of brought the extra Divs this would probably have been a stalemate for months.
Two Divs should arrive at Manila from Clark for my next turn while one stays at Clark to block any breakout attempt from Bataan.
If they are relatively fresh I’ll attack straight away.
Manila still has 2 forts so it will be a deliberate attack to try and knock them down.

Early reports are coming in:
- Manila attack makes good progress at 2:1 dropping forts to 1. IJA disruption and fatigue (d&f) are ok.
- Singapore attack gets 1:1 (very close to 2:1) dropping forts to 2. Despite the airfield showing damage nearly every turn, allied engineers had snuck forts to 3. IJA D&F quite high so the infantry will get a day or two to plan the next attack.
- CL Kashii is hit by three exploding Dutch torpedoes while flagship of an amphibious task force. I thought she’d be a goner, but she’s “only” got 50 float damage so is directed to a nearby port for emergency repairs.

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 2
Japanese adjusted assault: 1546
Allied adjusted defense: 775
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 2) – now that I’ve had time to check it, that was 1.994:1!!! Fatigue and disruption of the attackers is quite high, up in the 30s and 40s so they won’t attack for a few days. Once they recover a bit the next attack should be well over 2:1 as I saw the Aus Bdes reduce their raw AV to about 50 and 70 each, and there are only a few Coys worth of raw AV left in the other allied units.
Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 2
