Manila is captured, but there is no time for celebration until Bataan is cleared. AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 13, 42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sub attack near Hakodate at 120,54 Captain of SS Pollack elects not to launch torpedoes at this target PB Yahada Maru attacking submerged sub .... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sub attack near Fukue-jima at 100,59 SS Seadragon launches 2 torpedoes at PB Shonan Maru #2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Merak , at 48,97 Clear skies over Merak. I need to recon Batavia again as my focus has been on recon over Sumatra for the last few days. If Batavia doesn’t have too many fighters the Oscars will start sweeps of Batavia to prepare for the Java invasion. Ki-43-Ia Oscar x 21 No Japanese losses -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Toungoo , at 57,50 Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 10 H81-A3 x 8 Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 1 destroyed H81-A3: 1 destroyed 3 x Ki-43-Ib Oscar sweeping at 15000 feet AVG/2nd Sqn with H81-A3 (2 airborne, 0 on standby, 6 scrambling) Group patrol altitude is 20000 – the H81s have the height advantage and I assume radar, so time for the defenders to intercept is quite short. Time for all group planes to reach interception is 17 minutes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Toungoo , at 57,50 Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 10 – but I have a large numbers advantage. I just need to keep an eye on fatigue and morale. H81-A3 x 1 No Japanese losses No Allied losses AVG/2nd Sqn with H81-A3 (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling) 1 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact. I will sweep Rangoon next as I’ve just spotted a few xAK and a TK, no doubt trying to extract oil and fuel. Recon reports about 20-30 allied fighter based at Rangoon with some of them Blenheim Is, so likely 1 x AVG Sqn and maybe a Buffalo RAF Sqn. I have Nells/Bettys flying naval search at Chumphon with HQ 21 Air Flotilla stocked with torpedoes, but don’t want to launch them until after I’ve swept some allied fighters from Rangoon. I will move this SC Div a little further away from Batavia. 3 x 139WH-3 bombing from 100 feet Naval Attack: 1 x 300 kg SAP Bomb – that would make a mess of a SC if it hit… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Bataan at 78,77 G3M2 Nell x 10 Allied Ships PT Q-111 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Afternoon Air attack on 103rd PA Infantry Regiment, at 81,89 , near Butuan A6M2 Zero x 4 G3M2 Nell x 3 Allied ground losses: 3 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Afternoon Air attack on Manila , at 79,77 Ki-21-IIa Sally x 24 Ki-48-Ib Lily x 22 Airbase supply hits 1 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Afternoon Air attack on 112th Infantry Regiment, at 55,56 , near Moulmein Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 11 Blenheim IF x 8 No Japanese losses Blenheim IF: 2 destroyed CAP engaged: 1st Sentai with Ki-43-Ic Oscar (11 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling) 11 plane(s) intercepting now. Group patrol altitude is 1000 , scrambling fighters to 9000. Raid is overhead – the Blenheim IFs came in higher today than yesterday. This might make him pause on the strafing of 15th Army as it approaches Moulmein. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack near Fukue-jima at 100,59 SS Seadragon SS Seadragon is located by SC CHa-13 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Singapore (50,84) Japanese Deliberate attack Attacking force 60619 troops, 661 guns, 469 vehicles, Assault Value = 2010 Defending force 32030 troops, 433 guns, 362 vehicles, Assault Value = 425 Japanese adjusted assault: 1248 Allied adjusted defense: 819 Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 2) – only 1.52:1 today but good to knock a fort down. The airfield is heavily damaged so the allies won’t be able to rebuild the forts from here. Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 1 Combat modifiers Defender: terrain(+), experience(-) Attacker: Japanese ground losses: 1564 casualties reported Squads: 6 destroyed, 54 disabled – minimal damage to the infantry Divisions, but fatigue jumps back up to the 40s and 50s. The infantry will let the artillery bombard for a few days to recover before launching the next attack. The Imperial Guards Div are about to start their crossing from Johore Bahru in move mode, so I may just wait for them to arrive before attacking again. Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 20 disabled Engineers: 32 destroyed, 33 disabled – most damage caused to the 4th IER which is now shattered. It will move back to Johore Bahru to recover and take replacements. Allied ground losses: 1998 casualties reported Squads: 48 destroyed, 79 disabled – the 2 x Aus Bdes did well again but they are being worn down. Both were reduced to about 50 raw AV each. Non Combat: 32 destroyed, 118 disabled Engineers: 3 destroyed, 28 disabled Guns lost 69 (23 destroyed, 46 disabled) Vehicles lost 23 (2 destroyed, 21 disabled) Units destroyed 1 – I didn’t see what this unit was, possibly a militia Bn or a small AA unit. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Wenchow (89,58) BB Division 3 starts the next bombardment run from Shanghai. They should bombard two turns from now so I will hold off the next deliberate attack for one more day to try and coordinate. I want the ground attack to go in while the defenders ears are still ringing. Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 49695 troops, 507 guns, 218 vehicles, Assault Value = 2282 Defending force 42874 troops, 242 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1434 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Changsha (82,52) Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 51365 troops, 601 guns, 136 vehicles, Assault Value = 1749 Defending force 63093 troops, 334 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1848 Japanese ground losses: 66 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled Allied ground losses: 17 casualties reported Squads: 2 destroyed, 0 disabled Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Sinyang (86,48) Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 27831 troops, 273 guns, 78 vehicles, Assault Value = 1472 – waiting for 20th Army and a few more infantry Divs to arrive from the NE. Defending force 61982 troops, 425 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1781 – I will keep up the daily bombardments to try and keep this Chinese force low on supplies by the time 20th Army arrives. Japanese ground losses: 10 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled Allied ground losses: 93 casualties reported Squads: 4 destroyed, 1 disabled -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Tsiaotso (88,42) Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 53161 troops, 446 guns, 83 vehicles, Assault Value = 1869 While the AV ratio is tipping in my favour, I have 1 x IMB and 2 x detached Regts that would likely take heavy losses if I was to launch a deliberate attack due to the terrain in this hex. Defending force 47993 troops, 315 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1380 About half of the defenders were forced back into this hex from Loyang so are badly beaten up. This hex is providing some supply to the Chinese defenders, but there are a lot of them so I hope they are eating it all and using the rest on bandages, leaving none for ammunition. Assaulting units: HQ NCAA and HQ 12th Army are both moving here to take command of this operation and boost the combat values for the next attack. 8th Division 9th Division 35th Division 16th Ind.Mixed Brigade – no combat engineers 74th Infantry Regiment – no combat engineers 77th Infantry Regiment – no combat engineers 5th NCPC Infantry Brigade – watching and learning from the professionals 52nd Field AA Battalion Defending units: 7th Group Army 8th Group Army 14th Group Army 15th Group Army 39th Group Army 5th New Chinese Corps 9th Chinese Corps 27th Chinese Corps 33rd Chinese Corps 34th Chinese Corps 43rd Chinese Corps 61st Chinese Corps 80th Chinese Corps 93rd Chinese Corps 98th Chinese Corps 2nd Chinese Cavalry Corps 4th Chinese Base Force -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at 92,38 (near Chengting) Japanese Bombardment attack A deliberate attack (DA) is ordered for tomorrow. This is a Mountain hex so I am expecting to have to grind this out for the next week or so. The defenders should be low on supply but should have dug field fortifications by now. I plan to DA then rest for a few days before the next DA to take advantage of my troops being in supply, and just grind this allied force down. Attacking force 43756 troops, 397 guns, 153 vehicles, Assault Value = 1480 Defending force 16353 troops, 120 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 472 Assaulting units: I’ve reviewed the “official” command assignments of these Divs and 1st Division – detached from 4th Army, which in this game means China Expeditionary Army Reserve. I will most likely allocate this Div to NCAA Reserve and use it next to help capture Tsiaotso. 26th Division – Mongol Garrison Army. Once this hex is clear, based on the summary that the Ops Staff presented to me yesterday, I am thinking about sending this Div to NW China to follow up the MGA Cavalry and keep it with HQ MGA which is now moving forward. This Division on its own may be able to capture Lanchow, but probably not Sining in the Mountains NW of it. The 26th Div would also have enough combat power to clear the far NW areas. I’m still weighing up whether the best use of this Div is with MGA, or if I should keep it with HQ NCAA on the Tsiaotso-Sian axis. As Sian is a secondary attack compared to CEA in the south, I am leaning towards sending this Div into NW China. I want to clear this Mountain hex and the railway line through it first though. 36th Division – 1st Army. Instead of moving directly to join HQ 1st Army on the high road to Sian, it will move to help capture Tsiaotso next, before staying close to HQ 1st Army after that. 9th Ind.Mixed Brigade – 1st Army. This IMB will stay an IMB for the duration of the war, as unlike some others it doesn’t get another Bde joining it to become a Div later. It isn’t needed for a city garrison role, so it will move forward and stay with HQ 1st Army. It may be used to provide flank protection by blocking a side road somewhere, or become the future Sian garrison. Defending units: 13th Group Army 35th Chinese Corps 83rd Chinese Corps 3rd Prov Chinese Corps -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at 87,41 (near Tsiaotso) Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 23926 troops, 249 guns, 131 vehicles, Assault Value = 794 Defending force 35154 troops, 200 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1091 Allied ground losses: 16 casualties reported Squads: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled Assaulting units: I will leave this force on defence, protecting this flank until after Tsiaotso is captured. 1st Army 37th Division 41st Division 8th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion 6th Medium Field Artillery Regiment 26th Fld AA Machinecannon Company Defending units: Half of this allied force has been reversed already, but they were reinforced by a couple of large fresh Corps. 4th Group Army 1st Chinese Corps 16th Chinese Corps 36th Chinese Corps 38th Chinese Corps 47th Chinese Corps -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Manila (79,77) Japanese Deliberate attack Attacking force 45094 troops, 565 guns, 402 vehicles, Assault Value = 1282 Defending force 19532 troops, 298 guns, 178 vehicles, Assault Value = 227 Japanese adjusted assault: 1288 Allied adjusted defense: 315 Japanese assault odds: 4 to 1 (fort level 0) Japanese forces CAPTURE Manila !!! This is the biggest news of the day. I was expecting a win but the 4:1 ratio exceeded expectations. Combat modifiers Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), experience(-) Attacker: Japanese ground losses: 1406 casualties reported Squads: 1 destroyed, 114 disabled – casualties look to be evenly shared across the 3 x Divisions and 65th Bde, so all remain combat effective. 65th Bde will remain as the Manila garrison force while everything else that can fight is ordered to move to Clark Field. Once they are there, a coordinated advance to Bataan will commence. Jaluit expands fortifications to size 3 Maloelap expands fortifications to size 3 Clark Field expands fortifications to size 3 – that will do for forts at Clark Field for now, as the allies have shown no sign of advancing from Bataan. Karachi expands port to size 6 This prompted the IJNGS future ops cell to present an outline plan for an Indian Ocean raid. I informed them that there are higher priority tasks for KB for the foreseeable future, but I have asked them to work on it in their spare time. A deep Indian Ocean raid probably won’t be launched until after the Java invasion goes in, but a close range clearing patrol off the west coast of Java/Sumatra is possible once Singapore is captured and the minefields cleared. The aim of that patrol will be to support landings to capture NW Sumatra followed by the invasion of Java. Chiyoda-1 converting to E13A1 Jake – this is the first size 24 Jake group. This air group will stay on Chiyoda and take my best 24 >50 experience pilots from the reserve pool so that it can sail with a CVL or CVE task force to provide extra naval search. I only have about 6 more FP groups to upgrade to Jake on BB/CA/CL that are still at sea. I will upgrade those groups when the ships return to port and also upgrade the other 2 x CS-1 air groups as the next priority. After that, I will progressively upgrade the resized land based FP groups that are still putting recruits through the Naval Search Basic Course. Once trained in Naval Search, some groups will start flying operational Naval Search missions while most will continue their training on the ASW Basic Course. Device(s) upgraded in 16th Division supplied from Manila – 47mm AT guns which should come in handy at Bataan. New units: 2nd Raiding Regiment arrives at Kagoshima – Southern Army, to Thailand for use in Burma. 38th Field AA Battalion arrives at Hamamatsu – 17th Army, to Truk/Rabaul for use in the Solomons. 39th Field AA Battalion arrives at Hamamatsu – 17th Army, to Truk/Rabaul for use in the Solomons. 41st Field AA Battalion arrives at Osaka/Kyoto – 17th Army, to Truk/Rabaul for use in the Solomons. 82nd Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – SEAF, to Rabaul for future Buna garrison. 83rd Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – SEAF, to Rabaul for future Milne Bay garrison. 4th Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Saipan – SEAF, to Rabaul to capture dot bases in the Coral Sea and Solomon Islands 5th Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Saipan – SEAF, as above 7th Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Truk – SEAF, as above 8th Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Babeldaob – SEAF, as above 10th Special Base Force arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – Southern Area Fleet, to Davao then forward to help garrison Tarakan once captured.
