Status: offline 		I think my fast transport stuff up happened over two turns.
First turn, the CAs moved to Milne and picked up the Air HQ.
It then moved to Port Moresby rather than back to Rabaul.

Next turn the TF is sitting at PM loaded with the Air HQ with allied task forces spotted nearby and allied CV task force inbound...
Ordered to max speed run back to Rabaul, the Air HQ was unloaded at PM first, then the TF ran through a number of skirmishes with USN DDs, torpedoes going everywhere.

End result was the 23rd Air HQ is at PM, the worst possible place for it right now...
A few dings in IJN ships from 5” shells and one USN DD heavily damaged.
CA task force is safe back at Rabaul just in time, as allied carriers are back near PM.
Allied BB task force is about to hit PM again tomorrow too.

Plenty of action in SEAF at the moment, even though most of it today was unintentional!

Will try to post industry summary after I finish orders tonight.

--I invested MORE in the D4Y line, because I wanted to pull the D4Y4 in early....SR of 1, and 800kg bomb. Maybe that's just my preference
--I invested LESS in the A6M line....not sure there is alot of difference once you get the A6M5, but curious what others think
--Is the B6N2 that important? I though that B6N is better than Kates, but not so much that you need to invest heavily...Kates are fine

1. I think the 180 refineries that are off is Urumchi, as an experiment to try and get the Oil to move to Port Arthur refineries
2. Tojo IIc has armour. I’m hoping that it reduces the number of pilots KIA
3. I didn’t want to have so many research factories on bombers that once in production it would over produce them. Just trying to find a balance of bringing them forward a decent amount but still only producing a moderate number. Even with lots of research on the D4Y4 when are you planning on it starting production? Must still be late 1943?
4. A6M5c is the first with armour. Same reason as going for Tojo IIc. Hoping it saves a few more lives of IJN pilots. Plan A didn’t have this many factories on the Zero line, but I must have made a last minute decision on 7 Dec 41 to up the Zero at the expense of the A7M2. I can’t remember why, but I probably figured that the KB would only be used when supported by land based CAP by the time the Sam arrives, whether it had 4, 6 or 8 factories on it.
5. B6N2 line. You might be right, but I think it’s a bit faster which would help punch through CAP quicker. The later one gets a radar from memory
6. No to the Jack. Figured it’s better to concentrate on the George for land based units

Magwe Oil is producing at full capacity. The allies haven’t even tried to bomb it yet. Very sporting of them!
I think the only Oil that’s damaged is at Ledo, so that probably won’t be repaired.
I’d have to have excess supply in Bengal and push the allies bombers back from it about 20 hexes.
Rangoon hasn’t been bombed yet either.

Will see whether Calcutta can be captured when about 15 Infantry and 3 Tank Divs arrive from China.
Keeping supply up to this force will be interesting.
They will need to capture some supply or it will probably be counter-productive to the overall war effort.
There are a lot of allied infantry on the Burma India border now though, so the aim will be to trap and destroy them for points before they can escape.

Very large bombardment TF with lots of cruisers, amphib TF with more cruisers and USS Maryland as the flag.
CV task force in support.

Escorted Bettys and Nells break through the LRCAP and sink USS Maryland.
One CA plus one CLAA also hit by torps and reported sunk, but I’m not prepared to bank that CA.

Heavy losses in the air. About 80 planes lost or written off, but “only” 30 pilots KIA. Another 25 or so WIA.
I don’t recall seeing any MIA, probably because the action was all in the PM hex.

The allies get a 1:1 at PM and drop forts to 1...

Heck with the Ki94II, you need way more on the Sam. 5 on Tojo IIc is ok, but the Sam is imho the most important Japanese plane to get early. I think Sam should have a minimum of 10 size 30 factories on it and I like to have more on Sam than on Frank.

You really need to keep the initiative, and if your Indian operation does that, then you are extending the time you have to ship resources from the SRA back and also prevented early bombings on Honshu as long as you don't get completely cut off down the road in Burma/India.

In addition, if you can trade VP then it will be a win win win. VP need to be managed as carefully as Japan's economy.

Thanks Lowpe, I could shift more research to the Sam once the likes of Tojo IIc, A6M8 and Jill start production.
The A6M8 won’t be in service long before the Sam arrives anyway, even with the current plan.
Maybe I should switch the A6M5c factories to the Sam and not research the A6M8, just let it arrive on its historical due date.
I will run this option through my spreadsheets on the weekend but am leaning towards it.
A6M5c looks like being available in about Feb 43, so still plenty of time to re-tool those factories to help bring the Sam forward after that.

The only hesitation is that changing factories burns another 30k supply each, but investing something like 150-210k more supply into getting the Sam earlier might be worth it. I’ll see what the supply situation is once the Tojo IIc finishes. One other challenge with this would be telling the GENs that some of “their” research factories will be handed over to the IJN...

Not having to replace as many planes would certainly save some supply per plane.
I’ll check one day, but how many planes would have to be saved to make each 30k spent on a factory worth it?

12 supply points for F, FB
15 supply points for DB TB FP FF
18 supply points for NF R
30 supply points for HB MB LB AB TPT PTL

So for every 30k supply to re-role a research factory it would need to save 2500 fighters to be worth it (if that was the only factor).

Fewer VPs and pilots lost, plus more VPs gained are the best reasons to build the later model aircraft.

I figure I’d train those pilots anyway and build up a reserve pool.

Actually, if the trained pilot pool got big enough more fighter units would be available for front line service, which would cause them to burn more supply than if they were kept as training units.

There is a limit, clearly, and a balance to be achieved. That is why I always suggest building the fewest aircraft that will get the job done in the early war, and then build as many of your final generation fighters that you can for the end war. Getting those final generation sooner helps in every facet of your strategy and tactics.

You are limited though, there are only so many RnD factories, so much supply. But Ki-84 and (Ki-83 or Ki-94) and (George or Jack) and Sam just turn out to be your best choices for RnD to the exclusion of almost everything else. You build others of course, but as they come available. It does make the early war far more "interesting" as you won't have huge advantages in aircraft numbers and capability. But, having Frank&George (or Frank/Jack) in mid-43 is just such a game leveler for the IJ. And having Sam in '44 (or if your strategy is to do away with your CV's, then opt for the J7W). What you get is that you end up in '45 far stronger than you normally could. The allied advance is slower, and more costly.

All good points.

I'm very conscious of the above point after the last few days fighting in the air over Port Moresby.
The USN/USMC carrier based pilots would have racked up plenty of experience for relatively light losses to themselves.

I've managed to sink 2x USN BBs but the IJN pilots have paid a price in return.
Of all those shot down though, only about half were KIA, about a quarter WIA and the others must have bailed out without a scratch.

There's definitely a war on now!
Time to switch to local defensive CAP and naval search for a while to let the strike groups recover.

This is a scenario 1 game, right? My rule of thumb is that in a scenario one game the Allies will be in range to bomb Honshu sometime in first quarter 1944 if not sooner. If they don't get there, that means they usually have chosen a SRA focus and your oil and fuel production is seriously curtailed.

So if you do make changes in your r&d strategy now, in Oct of 1942, you definitely want to have it make an impact in the course of the game.

It takes 3000 Franks to counter the Thunderbolt in 44. The A6M5c does not counter the Corsair/Hellcat. It can however counter the Lightning defensively, along with being a great bomber killer.

There is no right answer to Japanese R&D. You can have a great game with the A6M line and Frank and George. It is however a different game with Sam, Frank and George and of course a lot depends on how early you get them.

No other planes have as great a capacity to slow the Allied advance down than the Sam, Frank and George. Slowing the advance down lets you earn your r&d supply expenditure back. But if you have lost the KB prior to the arrival of the Sam, then its impact is not nearly as strong. I am going to tentatively add the A6M8 to the list as well, if you can get it in early 1943.

Pax mentions a tactic not often used by JFBs, and that is to park the KB safely, and use its air squadrons at land bases. In effect your r&d strategy needs to work in conjunction with your overall game strategic direction.

Status: offline 		The opportunity cost of sinking those battleships should be more than offset by both the VPs gained versus VPs lost plus the damage that those battleships will not do to your bases and units. Not to mention having to defend against them.

Plenty of movement arrows from allied rear areas towards the front line. The allies are clearly adjusting their defences to prepare for IJA reinforcements to arrive from China. In some ways I’m happy to see them committing more strength forward, as they are risking getting more cut off. But in other ways it will be more challenging. The big test will be the first few battles, as the looming IJA attack will have to punch a hole in the front somewhere, then push through to try and form a pocket.
Also one spotted from Calcutta NW – allied SigInt may have picked up the troops preparing for bases around Cocanada on the India coast. That deception plan could be working. Based on how many allied units are NE of Calcutta, there can’t be much allied strength defending the rest of in India.

This is a carrier unit that has been posted ashore. The fighter groups of Kaga and Zuikaku are still in theatre while the carriers are under repair. I’m going to reorganise the IJN fighter force shortly, downgrade the carrier units that are temporarily land based back to A6M2s to get these A6M5s refurbished and issued to fighter units that are still afloat.

It should start production late 1942. Still TBC how many Tojos will produce/month and how many of these factories will shift to something else.
The IJAAF fighter force has:
- Front line fighter force of 9x Oscar and 4x Tojo units, mostly in Burma/India but some in Timor/Darwin.
- Advanced training force of 5x Oscar units in China (mostly old model Oscars); plus 3x Nate units in Japan
- Basic training force of 11x Nate units in Manchukuo and Korea.
- 5x 30 Tojo IIc factories are researching plus the 1x 60 Tojo IIa factory currently producing.
- 120/month capacity of Oscar production factories. 152 in the pool, 30/month producing right now just to help keep the Ha-35 engine bonus up on the research factories.
- 120/month of Nick-A factories. 122 in the pool, 60/month producing right now. I have only recently toggled back Nick production as the FB units are all equipped and losses have been lower than expected so far.

- 1x30 researching Ki-83, 7(23) 10/45
- 12x30 researching Frank-A, 12(18) to 18(12), 4/44

Ace pilot Kamito, S. of 11th Sentai is promoted to 2LT
Kaga-2 at Manus takes D3A1 Val replacements – CV Kaga is on the way back to Kure for repairs leaving the air group at Manus. She is away from immediate danger, especially the allied submarine concentration in the Bismarck Sea. Currently heading north towards Woleai, then will proceed directly to Kure west of the Marianas. The rest of the KB is with her moving for repairs and upgrades, including Shokaku, Hiryu 2x Kongos and DDs.
All IJN carriers will repair and upgrade before concentrating together back in SEAF.

Chitose-2 on CS Chitose converting to size 12 from 24 – the CS to CVL upgrades can start in 10 days. I read somewhere ages ago that if the airgroup is aboard they will automatically change to F and TB units, so the units are being downsized to both fit back on each CVL. I think this is only for these two CS and it doesn’t work for the other two CS to CVL conversions. Anyone have experience with this detail? Tokyo is already size 50 repair yard so the upgrade should work.
Chiyoda-1 on CS Chiyoda converting to size 12 from 24 – when these units convert from FP, it will put 2x32 well trained FP pilots back into the reserve pool.
2nd Tank/C Division - some devices have been upgraded at Chungking – 2nd Tank Div is now fully upgraded and will start moving to India. 1st Tank Div is nearly at Kunming already.

Assaulting units: I’d spotted this movement arrow and left the 1st Raiders to defend on purpose, just to see who was coming. Status: offline 		This is a summary of the status of the IJN 1st Air Fleet.

The Kaga TF moved 5 hexes yesterday, so should arrive at Kure in 6 more days.
Hiryu will then take its 15 day 7/42 AA upgrade.
Kaga will take its 21 day 7/42 AA upgrade while under repair. With 95 total points of damage, it will probably need a few months in the Kure yard.

The fighter units of Kaga, Hiryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku have stayed in SEAF to help defend the naval bases there while the ships are under repair. Akagi-1 will reappear at Tokyo on 15 Feb 43, so just under 3 months from now.

TF3 is at Singapore and should be ready to sail from there in about 7 days.
