7 x Ki-57-II Topsy transporting 85th Naval Guard Unit to Horn Island – Horn Island is being reoccupied.
5 x H6K4-L Mavis transporting 6th Indpt SNLF Coy from Torokina – SNLF Coys will also move forward to “garrison” vacant dot hexes in the central Solomons.
17 x H6K2-L Mavis transporting 4th Indpt SNLF Coy from Torokina
7 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting supplies to Buna – once the allied bombers at Port Moresby are suppressed some xAKL resupply convoys will move forward to Lae, Buna and Milne Bay.
HQ 8th Area Army, HQ 18th Army and HQ 6th Air Division are at Manus Island and will all move forward to Lae. An IJAAF airfield is planned for Nadzab, but HQ 6th Air Div will stay at Lae until more engineers and supply arrives to start moving dirt at Nadzab.

Shikuka expands airfield to size 5
Asansol expands airfield to size 3
Aitape expands fortifications to size 1
Aircraft A6M5c Zero advances R&D – to 7/43, research at 12% per day with engine bonus. 600 research points would bring it back to 1/43, so I make that 50 days. A6M5c should arrive in about the last week of Jan 43 if the engine bonus can be kept for the whole time.
Aircraft B6N2 Jill advances R&D – to 8/43, research at 4% per day, no engine bonus. That’s about 120 research points per month, so with 8 months available, it will be 3 and a bit months until Jill starts production.
Natori-1 on CS Mizuho converting to size 20 from 1
Pilot Kamisaka R. is reported as having been found – a 76 exp TB pilot from Hiryu-3
Device(s) upgraded in 20th Division supplied from Rangoon
Low garrison leads to damage and 1 VP loss from partisan attack at Liuchow (74, 55)! – the garrison is currently at 52/60, so another small unit will move here to get the garrison to >60.

Aircraft Ki-49-II KAI Helen advances R&D – to 4/43. With 1x30 research factory the Helen transport will start production at 30/month in late Mar 43. Only 10x Topsy II transports are being built per month and that isn’t quite enough to keep all IJAAF transport units fully equipped. 30x Helens will be too many, but I’ll just monitor the pool as it grows on the 1st of each month and toggle production on/off as required.
SS S-34 is reported to have been sunk near Manus on Dec 10, 1942

10 Dec 42 – Battle of Changsha, deliberate attack #1

The 6x A and B grade Divs at Changsha will only need a few days to recover before the next deliberate attack is ordered.
58th Div took the heaviest losses, not unexpected as it is a C grade Div with limited firepower. It will move to Wuchang to takeover as the garrison which has a requirement of 200.

Two thirds of 110th Div are moving to Changsha, while the other third stays as the Chungking garrison.
One third of 68th Div is already at Canton, so once 58th Div arrives at Wuchang the rest will move to recombine 68th Div as the Canton garrison. That will free up other units including the 104th Div for other tasks.

3rd Tank Div is close to 100% TOE and 37th Div is close to being fully recovered, so they are ordered to join the Battle of Changsha.

36th and 41st Divs still need a week or more to recover disabled squads, but they probably won’t be needed at Changsha. They have changed their preparation target to Wenchow and will move to join the Battle of Chuhsien which should end it before the end of Dec 1942.
26th Div has also just changed its preparation target to Wenchow and will move to Chuhsien.

27th Div will move into reserve in Burma via Kunming.
32nd Div will move into reserve in Thailand via Hanoi and Saigon.

If you drop the torpedo bomber height to 1000 feet for Naval Attack, click on torpedo instead of bombs, they will use the full bomb load and not be penalized. Kates are very good this way.

BTW, what's in your pipeline for aircraft production?

I see your flying the Tojo IIa, should have the IIc by 1/43. Followed by the first George come March/April. Then by June/July the first Frank, and that's without 'skipping' models in the R&D research. These planes can fight on 'par' with Allied aircraft of the time frame.

I’ve got a bit of time this evening so might use that to check and summarise aircraft production.

From memory, Tojo IIc started production on 1 Dec so the first Sentai will upgrade to it shortly.
D4Y1 is the next to finish research, Jan 43, with A6M5c looking good for Feb 43.
Still only 1 of 8x George factories researching but the others are 19-29 repaired. Mar/Apr will be about right.
12x Frank factories with the best in the 20s repaired.
I could really do with the George and Frank now as the allies have started bombing again in Burma and PNG.

Looks reasonable to me, and I also realize late war fighter R&D also factors into the equation.

For now the Tojo IIc may help if you can put up good numbers. At least 'til the better planes come online.

Also why I like to hold all of the Solomons and PNG, he doesn't have too many fighters with range to make the trip without local bases. I know its easier said than done, especially when I'm sure your opponent is well aware of the fact.

Started the conversion on the 13 Dec turn.
I figured it was fine to start CVL Mizuho a few weeks late to allow the another 5-6 FP groups to upsize to 20.
These 4x CVL will eventually put another 120 Fighters into the defensive CAP.

Doesn't bode well for CV ops at this base.

If you don't already know CV ops are penalized when located at a base.

Did you build out the Topsy I's? IIRC there are a number of engines for this plane that could go unused otherwise. Saves some HI.

Yep built out the Topsy I.

This is the state of the IJA air transport command.
Not too many short, but the 2nd Raiding Sentai is about 10 planes short and the 2x Chutai still flying Thalia would be good to upgrade and use to fly supply into Bengal.

I only just "graduated" the pilots from 4/5/6th Chutai to the reserve pool and replaced them with 30ish experience trainees.

This is a summary of the IJN aircraft production and research plan.

The A6M2-Rufe accidently auto upgraded to A6M5.
Once the Rex is available a spare factory (like the Topsy II) will be changed to build some of them to play with.

and the IJAAF aircraft production and research summary.

To clarify on the Oscars, the Oscar IIb will produce but probably not the Oscar III as better fighters should be available by the time it arrives "naturally". I will keep the Oscar factories in mothballs as I have a hunch that the Oscar IV will be useful with low service rating and cannons.
It's just a hunch as playing into 44/45 against a functioning adversary is unchartered territory for me.

You can go to A6M5 > A6M5b > A6M5c for no cost as long as you have the middle model researched. The same with the Tojo. That is without changing into a research factory then into a production factory.

I didn’t research the A6M5b or the Tojo IIb though.
It will get me the A6M5c and did get me the Tojo IIc quicker than if I went through the middle models, but I have to pay a bit more supply to upgrade the A6M5 and Tojo IIa production factories.

If you drop the torpedo bomber height to 1000 feet for Naval Attack, click on torpedo instead of bombs, they will use the full bomb load and not be penalized. Kates are very good this way.

Joe can you explain this one a little bit more. I'm not sure i understand.

Set the planes to Naval Attack, ordinance loadout as "torpedo" and if there are no torpedoes present the aircraft will use BOMBS AND SUFFER NO ALTITUDE PENALTY. Kates will fly with two bombs if set to bombs but Bettys and Nells will use a half load unless you do what I wrote.

Well the U. S. Navy has sure had its ears pinned back.

Think its time to reestablish your dominance in the southern Solomons?

The initiative has swung back to Japan in SEAF but i know it won’t last beyond mid 1943.

That’s one operation on the agenda for the next weekly IGHQ Joint Planning Conference.
Naval blockade of PNG and the lower Solomons, establish local air supremacy, with a view to counter landings in 3-4 months time.

Will it be viable to raid Australia for victory points now? Getting those may put you in touching distance of auto-victory.

Good question awaw. I’ve not seriously considered this before.

It would probably need a KB strike on Heavy Industry right?
Maybe level bombing at 20k feet would avoid the worst of the flak at somewhere like Newcastle.

KB has already been ordered south into the Coral Sea to see what it can see, see see.

KB still has a shortage of DBs so I might send a few extra Zeroes to join it temporarily.
Search and strikes are set to range of 7 with orders to stay 8 hexes away from large allied bases like Townsville.
I expect the allies have cleared the area of ships already, so a push south to the Sydney-Noumea line might just be a waste of fuel.
I also expect the allies will send 4E naval strikes at long range, so that might give me some points, unless they hit a CV that is!

Yeah, the Japanese transport arm, is to say the least, pretty lame. And keeping them in planes isn't easy.

Keep in mind that all Japanese float fighters will eventually be able to upgrade to LBF. Except one 9 plane unit. That is at least with PDU-ON, not sure if you can with PDU-OFF.

The only reason I'm building some is in case I may use them on the converted BB's, which I plan to do in my current AI game.

You may want a few as they have the best range of the model and with their maneuverability make good escorts.

Naval bombardment will get you points as well, if it damages the 'right stuff'.

but probably not the Oscar III as better fighters should be available by the time it arrives "naturally".

You may want a few as they have the best range of the model and with their maneuverability make good escorts.

You prompted me to check in with the Oscar development team.
The Oscar IIIa won’t arrive until Oct 44. The good news is that if I need some the factories can be turned on.
The bad news is that by that time they would be running into local CAP consisting of P47s and early model P51s...
I expect to be fighting a defensive war by then.

The Frank development team are forecasting the Frank A to start production in Sep 43, Frank R in Mar 44.
Ki-94 II in Mar 45.

OK, that's kinda late. Mine should arrive Oct '43, but I've had R&D on the line from day one. Not much, two sites plus the engine bonus.

I'll double check when I fire the game up later. Can stay up late tonight, no babysitting tomorrow. Go whatever the name of the TS that's due to hit. Now watch the tree that's just outside my bedroom will come crashing down and take out my computer.

The 2nd of 8x size 30 George research factories fully repairs, with research now at 20% towards 9/43.
The Nak-45 engine has 315 in the pool and production is increasing at +4 per day. Production increase is just over half way to the planned 600/month.
The engine bonus for researching George should start in the first half of Jan 43, then once the 8x factories repair the George will advance one month per week. Production should start in late March 43.

Leave the SSX there until you get a sub carrier there. It might annoy the Allies . . .

It must be frustrating for the skipper of AMc Karachi, desperate to earn himself a mention in despatches.
Not quite as desperate as the situation on the SSX though. They must be running low on fresh water by now...
Must be almost time for them to abandon ship.

They can collect rain water, eat seaweed and raw fish, and be content!
