Akagi-2 arrives at Tokyo – interesting detail here with Akagi-2 coming back from the dead. It arrives with 30x Vals and 30x trained pilots which is unexpected. The other units of the Akagi air group are still a few weeks from resurrection, but they will all move to Kure and be used as a training group.

Not sure why, but the Dude seems to like leaving base forces in non-base hexes like this. He did it once before on the Burma-India border when a RAF Base Force did some heroic defending, but that was in rough terrain whereas this is in the clear.

Any way you can start training up cadres faster?

That is not 40 pilots, that is the experience level of his trained reserves.

As I understand it, Tracom was specifically put in to help the Japanese by theElf.

I never use it other than a holding tank for qualified pilots to make it easier (less clicky and immediately fill) frontline units.

As I understand it Tracom primarily speeds up the normally yearlong training program by allowing some pilots to graduate from the monthly classes sooner. It doesn't add new pilots to the program. Secondarily, when they do graduate from training they seem to be closer to the national training average.

That doesn't seem to me a great advantage for sideling great pilots.

By training pilots quicker, it does save HI. I also like to put some in the Operational Training Units to help increase the trainees experience and skills quicker.

Not sure where you're seeing those numbers fellas, but here's a summary of the off-map pilot reserves.

I am not using TRGCOMD as I figure those pilots are best used on active service, especially IJNAF - I don't want to leave the defence of the carriers in the hands of rookies.

The IJNAF has a lot of pilots in Jake units, and other on map training units, so that's what has been keeping their trainee pool drained to zero.
Over the next few months I expect to see the IJNAF pool increase as nearly all on map training units are full now.
The Akagi units are due to return shortly, so they will fill out with trainees too, but there is a bit of a drought of new units arriving.

I'll try to find a way to post a summary of my on map training units.
I do a unit by unit review on the 1st of each month, to move pilots from training units to completely fill front line units. I only replace combat losses during a month if needed, otherwise I try to wait until the 1st of the next month again, just to save a bit of time during the orders phase.

IJNAF: ship based units are the "elite" and take the best of F/DB/TB/FP pilots; land based units train pilots up to 80+ experience (for F pilots anyway) before a F pilot is selected for carrier service. The front line land based units (mainly in SEAF at the moment) are effectively advanced training units. The land based units in Japan are mostly basic training units for trainees (<50 experience) and rookies (50s exp) to get up to at least 60+ experience before they are ready to fly on active service. I read somewhere that 50+ are considered "Rookies", 60+ are "Trained", 70+ "Experienced", 80+ "Veteran" and 90+ "Elite".

IJAAF: 2nd, 3rd, 4h, 5th and the recently arrived 6th Air Divs are front line units receiving 60-70+ experience pilots. 2nd, 3rd and 4th in Burma; 5th on Timor and 6th at Lae.
51st (Japan) and 13th (China) Air Divs are currently the "advanced training" force, with about 65 experience the recent "graduation" point to keep the front line units full of pilots.
2nd Air Army (Manchukuo) is the basic training force.

I plan to re-jig what some of these units are doing over time, to provide enough basic training slots in order to get the fighter pilot pipeline flowing a bit smoother.

Status: offline 		I spun a "tactical" turn this morning in what must have been a record for me, 54 mins from hitting go to saving the file to send back.
The turn should come back shortly, but I've been pondering what to do when the CV fighter units are all full of 80+ experience pilots, which is basically from now on.

First of all, I did some research on tactical level organisation of the IJNAF, coming up with the following:

Kokutai (Ku) = air group, usually 18-27 aircraft; land based could be 24 to 100 aircraft. Could be commanded by a CAPT for the large air groups, or CMDR for the smaller ones.

Hikotai = the flying unit that operated the aircraft, distinct from the ground echelon elements.
Hikotaicho = usually a LCDR or senior LT (sometimes a CMDR) who was the air commander of a Kokutai.

Daitai = 18 aircraft

Chutai = Division of 9 aircraft, commanded by a Buntaicho. Buntai referred to a division of flight personnel while Chutai refers to the formation of aircraft, therefore in flight the Buntaicho was referred to as the Chutaicho.

Shotai = 3 aircraft. Shotai leaders were junior officers, WOs or SNCOs. The second aircraft was usually an experienced pilot while the third was less experienced. Therefore, while I know the ranks make no difference in the game, for a bit of role playing I will use LTJG/ENS/WO/CPO as flight commanders, PO1 typically as the #2 pilot and PO2 as the #3 pilot.

PO1 Sakai will therefore be promoted in the field on 1 Jan 43 to Acting Chief Petty Officer. Bravo Zulu to the Chief!

Once LCDR and above reach 80+ experience (and become aces) they will be posted home to become Instructors in on map training units.
I won't use them in "Training Command" pool, but they will use their skills and rank to inspire the new trainees and rookies to learn faster.




Same will go for the IJAAF, MAJs and above with experience of 80+ will be posted home to Instructor roles.
I might include another criteria, such as must be at least a 5 kill ace.
I don't expect the rank or ace status to matter in terms of the game mechanics, but in real life being taught by veteran aces would certainly inspire the rookies.

Be careful.


The pilot addendum was written at a time when there was special training squadrons, a feature that was later removed. It is unclear if the line is accurate anymore or not. I don't think there is a definitive source on it.

Status: offline 		I’ll post a pic later, but the Hosho-1 fighter group has been hurting my eyes whenever I look at the pilots.
It’s the most over-officered unit in the Fleet.
From memory, for 12 aircraft it has 2x LCDR and 3x LTs.
It’s been like that for months, but once KB gets back to port I will try to remember to do something about it.
