Part 5, and last.
This shows the top experience aces of both Army and Navy AFs.

It was a quiet day in the air war yesterday, only one KIA and I think that was a landing accident.

Combined Fleet units go into action in the Coral Sea near Port Moresby.
I�ll need to post a picture to show the state of play, there should be more action tomorrow.

KB and escorts got into a good position largely undetected 7 hexes from Port Moresby, but only launched partial strikes...
HMAS Australia took a torpedo and a few decent sized xAP took some too. Looks like another evacuation task force.
Plenty of Nells and Betties launched but they seem to struggle against allied cruisers with decent flak.
Dive bombers also tried but failed to hit DDs that look like they are a trailing ASW task force.

Allied bombers strike at Katha in Burma, with Nicks doing well on CAP versus Warhawks, but quite a few IJAAF planes were destroyed on the ground.

Some thoughts from me following your pilot training posts.

- Your IJA fighter pilot reserves worry me. To compare, it's June '43 and I have 1046 IJA fighter pilots in the reserve (50% over 60 EXP, about 75% over 50 EXP). 133 pilots roughly equates to about 4 IJA squadrons (assuming 42 planes), and as 1944 approaches, there will be bad days where 4 (or more) squadrons get mauled bad.

- If it's that bad for the IJA fighter pilot pools, am I right in saying the IJN pilot pools are worse?

- My IJN fighter reserves are only 336 pilots, as I've struggled to get that training programme off the ground in the same way (but we're getting there)

- I think you absolutely do need to accelerate the off-map pilots for both IJA and IJN. Less so for having more of them early, but more for the EXP boost - my IJA pilots are leaving training at 31 EXP versus your 21 (though to be fair my IJN pilots aren't even getting to complete training thanks to floatplane/bomber training). Plus, the more, the better - especially in preparation for the late-war where pilots will die off en-masse.

I think you need a wider solution to your problem than pulling the 81+ pilots into TRACOM. You've got a good balance of EXP across your IJA fighter groups currently, but very little in terms of depth in the pools. That's not good, but there's time to remedy.

My suggestion would be a operational pause on offensive IJA sweeps for 3-4 months. Pull 4 or 5 of your elite squadrons off the frontline (say, 250 pilot slots worth). Send the elite pilots to the reserve (for use as replacements for the rest of the elite squadrons) and replace them with rookies. Turn the squadrons you've pulled off the line into training squadrons for one full cycle of recruits (in other words, 60 EXP pilots), then return them back to frontline duty.

I think you need this shock therapy to boost the fighter reserve going into 1944.

My attitude is that it's always easier to build EXP when there's an abundance of suitable pilots in the reserve already.

With about 500 60+ EXP pilots, I'm not fussed if I keep pilots in the advanced training stage for longer now, as there's the depth to buy time if losses suddenly spike.

NB: Everything above is also applicable to bombers (both IJA and IJN). Likely more so, as these groups tend to suffer horrible pilot losses into 1944 and 1945.

I agree with MM your numbers look low, but I am not as versed on how to quickly train in volume. In fact, at the risk of highjacking your thread, would love some input from MM and others.

I find it's much easier to train IJN pilots in quantity...you can expand alot of fighter and bomber units, plus expanded float plane units gives you a large number of training slots you can fill. If you haven't already you can fill this gap by expanding many IJN units for more slots (and you can train fighter pilots in floatplanes no problem)

The IJA, on the other hand, has limited slots available. The Manchukuo Air units are a no-brainer, but that's about 250-ish fighter planes. I don't think that's enough.

For the IJA, I train everybody in Manchuria to 65-70 AIR, 65-ish LOW-N, and 65-ish DEF. That still does not net pilots in the volume I want, and most are going to be 50 exp or so after this training program. That means assignment to CAP units and other lower-risk units to gain experience.

Funny, my experience is the opposite. Easy to get IJA pilots en-masse, much harder with the IJN (especially if you use the land-based Zero squadrons on the frontline).

Not a fan of training fighter pilots in the floatplanes, to be honest. They're much more useful starting to build the chunky pools of late-war bomber pilots that you'll need en-masse.

The IJN shortage of NavT training is much more pressing than the fighter pilot shortage in my view. Better then to use the floatplanes (once you've trained enough NavS/ASW pilots for to fight the war) to train NavB/NavS as a starter school for the NavT pilots (or in a pinch, finished dive bomber pilots).

You're right, it's not enough. My workaround was:

1. On Dec 7th, all IJA pilots flying Nates went to the reserve. They were replaced with rookies and set to train. They went back onto the frontline after they'd trained a class of pilots and upgraded to Oscars. This gives you a big head start in the first six months without seriously impacting the initial offensive (who uses Nates for sweeps anyways :P)

2. Win early in China. This frees up more squadrons for training.

3. Sensible deployment of squadrons. There's what you have, and what you need. The two are often different. With some careful planning of expansion you can limit the areas where you're threatened by Allied air to a few select regions that are easily covered by a handful of squadrons.

4. Related to point 3, sensible tempo of operations. Is there really a need to make offensive sweeps every turn that you can? A phony war works in many respects to Japan's advantage, especially in pilot training. In a few games now I've basically stood down IJ air operations in theatres, turning the squadrons over to training duties when there's been a lull in operations. The late-42 to mid-43 lull is great for this, but it's not time dependant.

So the big advantage of the above steps really comes in step #1 - you suddenly have a decent pool of strong pilots, an enhanced training regime and reduced losses (due to fewer squadrons at the tip of the spear).

That puts you onto a positive feedback cycle that you can control, rather than trying to chase your tail otherwise.

If it's concerns about volume that bothers you, then I think it's better to go big into training in the first year of the game. Forget the 50/50 balance between training/frontline squadrons that seems to be the norm. For the first six months that balance can be 80/20 without much serious ramifications (provided you're combining that with a fairly conservative overall strategy).

All good points, appreciated.
I have been looking at the 1900ish number in the IJA off map reserve and wondering how to reduce it quicker, to get more pilots into the 70ish exp reserve pool.
The answers seem to include: reduce the number of front line units and lower the target experience levels of front line and advanced training for a while. Maybe I reduce the advanced training target to 65 or even 60 exp.
The FB force could also play a big part, if I transition some units off NF duty to CAP advanced training.
I�ve seen some of the numbers in other AARs for losses in 1944+, so will try to use the rest of 1943 to grow the reserve pool.
I could do with some more fighter and FB units to use for training!

I�ll try to post a summary of the IJN on the weekend coming.
I�m keeping the 80+ exp pilots in the carrier units as I don�t want to put defence of the Fleet in the hands of 70ish exp pilots.

LRCAP over 25th Army. This was an interesting result following on from the discussion on what to do with 81+ experience pilots above. The veteran 11th Sentai pilots were all untouched, while the slightly less experienced 59th Sentai lost the aircraft and pilots. Both units had the same settings and similar fatigue ratings. It looks like the higher experience played a big part in the 11th Sentai pilots being able to keep themselves alive. Or it could have just been luck.

BBs guzzled it all up!
Not to worry, more is on the way from the regular Balikpapan-Manus run.
I�ve also started to setup Manila-Guam/Truk convoys with a relatively small number of Std-A/B TKs.
Manus, Truk and Guam still have some fuel, but I forward based some short-legged subs at Rabaul and now they can�t move for lack of fuel.
Subs can�t seem to refuel from other ships, unless I�ve missed something obvious.

The allies have recently moved some fighters and bombers back to Guadalcanal, so it�s a bit risky to move Auxiliaries like an AS back to Rabaul in case 4E bombers raid the port.

The main action this turn was with subs.
A US sub entered the Port Moresby hex and hit a CL with one torpedo. About 40 float damage so will retire for repairs. If it takes another toro it will sink.
An IJ sub hit a big Dutch xAP on the NE approach to Pearl Harbour with two torps. Reported sunk for 20 points.
Another allied convoy was spotted vic Norfolk Island, but the escorts got the better of that one. Damaged sub has to retire for repairs.
Recon bombardment of Comilla shows the defenders as 18th Brit Div, one Armd Bde and a few other randoms.

E W-23 beginning refit in shipyard at Tokyo
44th JNAF AF Unit - some devices have been upgraded at Ponape � this unit hadn�t been issued a radar yet
2nd Base Force's TOE was upgraded to IJN Base Force at Manus � thanks to the in-game reminder to set to rest mode, the IJN Base Forces that are in range of a Command HQ take their TOE upgrades. More support, aviation support and DP guns will all be very handy in the months to come. HQ 4th Fleet will be loaded on ships and conduct a world tour of the Pacific to allow the others to upgrade. HQ Southern Army is also moving towards �southern areas� so will help out from the west.

Current strategic map showing IJN Naval and Special Base Force locations.
51st Base Force doesn't actually have any naval support squads, so is functionally an IJNAF base force.
The IJNAF Base Forces aren't shown here.

The "3" at Ponape is actually the 3rd Special Base Force, with the 3rd Base Force at Babeldoab.

A musings from me in that the 25th Special and 10th Special don't seem to be in particularly useful ports.

I'd maybe consider moving one to Kendrai/Makassar and another to Manado - there seems a bit of a gap around the Banda Sea.

Good points the 10th is a bit wasted at Tarakan right now.
The prewar planning was to use them in ports that are worth trying to defend, oil being the priority.
From reviewing this, the 7th is also a bit wasted at Hakodate. Historically I believe it was used in SEAF, somewhere like Madang.

The 25th at Vic Point is the current location of HQ 2nd Fleet. There is a BB Div there with a bunch of Auxiliaries.

There are about 5-6 more IJN base forces due to arrive, but some don�t come until quite late.
As the Banda Sea is in 3rd Fleet�s area, I think I�ve pencilled in the 30th and 33rd for down there.

Also keep in mind that other 'Command HQ's' may perform this function from 2x their range, so a little jog from their location may make a difference.

Thanks for the comments, here is the revised plan with some changes to IJN Base Force locations.
This is also showing the Fleet HQ locations now. The icons with black border haven't arrived yet.
They are shown for planning purposes, subject to change based on what the allies do before they arrive.

I had already decided (about a month ago from looking at my notes!) to move 12th BF forward from Manila to Kendari.
The orders must have got misplaced at the bottom of a staff officers in tray...

From this review:
- 12th Base Force will move from Manila to Kendari. HQ 22nd Air Flotilla is already there.
- 7th Base Force will move from Hakodate to Guam
- 15th Base Force will move to from Guam to Manado

Also, HQ Combined Fleet and HQ 1st Fleet are still at Kure.
In order to prepare for the inevitable USN advance across the Pacific, they will move to the Marianas.
I'll check the Port Size + Naval Squad table later, to see if they can combine their naval support squads to be able to rearm everything at Guam with a Level 5 Port.

NEAF looks a little bare on this image, but the 5# JNAF AFUs are all up there spread from Hakodate, through the Kuriles, to the delay positions in the Aleutians.

Are you sure RJ? I hope that is true, but I've always assumed that HQ Combined Fleet functions as a Naval HQ based on the info screen.
HQ CF will be embarking for the Marianas shortly, so I will send HQ 4th Fleet to the Marshalls first to see if HQ CF lets the Saipan/Guam base forces upgrade their TOEs.

BB Div 3 bombards Lunga without incident. The allies were a bit demoralised after their DBs were shredded so didn�t launch any strikes in SEAF today.

In Bengal, just west of Dimapur, the XV Corps HQ and 2nd Brit Div were pushed back with 2x Assam Bns destroyed.

I haven't used them either as yet. From what I know, or perceive to know, when you drop them, a message will be displayed to all. So apparently your opponent gets notification of their deployment.

Why? Don't know. For whatever reason, its was a Dev's decision. Not that I'm disparaging their decision.
