Maybe drop the mines somewhere that he needs to keep clear but without CAP yet, or a base that has just been captured. Then send in some fast SCTFs to sink minesweepers.

Looks like they can only be laid in enemy bases, so I’m going to drop some at Tulagi and Lunga.
I’ve got a feeling that the allies are sneaking supply in from Ndeni by submarine or fast transports, so mines could hit something on one of those missions.
Ships can be damaged by mines during sweeping, so I’ll try to keep the Type 3 mine pool drained even just for the annoyance factor.

HQ Combined Fleet is on the way to Guam, so I will know for sure when it lands there.
I’m expecting it to function as a Naval HQ though.

HQ 4h Fleet is loaded on a CL/DD fast transport task force in the way to Kwajalein.
It’s command radius of 1 means it has to move around to get the TOE upgrades happening.
If needed, it will move back to Guam and Saipan after Kwaj.

HQ Southern Army is moving to Davao, so with a command radius of 9 x2 it should allow TOE upgrades for units at the likes of Balikpapan, Tarakan, Kendari, Sorong and Babeldoab. The long range command radius is very handy.

Don't do mods, so I didn't consider them. But in stock its not a Command HQ.

Some of those pilots pictured have some pretty dismal defense score. I think those pilots could benefit from a few weeks on sweep 100 feet. I usually try and train my pilots to 70 air and 70 defense, with 65 defense and 70 air being the minimum. Also I wouldn't put any pilot into the Kido Butai that doesnt have at least 70 defense skill even if they have 81 base exp.

Good pickup SS, I only noticed that after posting the image too.
Lots of them need to go back to finish their Strafe training course.
PO2 Chiyoshima is already on a CV, but whenever the CVs are in port somewhere safe the pilots can do some more training.

Terapo is captured with a 5:1 with all defenders captured.
AO Ondo doesn't even move out of the hex before being hit by two more torps, sunk
xAK Liverpool Maru is also sunk while hauling resources from Taihoku to Shanghai.
Akagi-1 has been shown as "reorganizing" for about the last week, so I downgraded an A6M5 unit and it took those planes to return today.
16 veteran pilots return with it, a shame there weren't more A6M5s in the pool or more veteran pilots might have reappeared too.
There are no spare IJN trainees to post in, but more will arrive on 1 March to fill this unit up for a basic training course. These veterans will be posted to the fleet.
Soryu-1 becomes the first unit equipped with the A6M5c. CPO Sakai is eager to test the new Charlie model in combat.

Correct. I you look again, you'll see there're a number of restricted units in that stack.

No house rules in this game at all.
HQ Korea Army is just another Army HQ with a GEN and staff officers who have to earn their pay!
IGHQ have taken to calling it HQ Bengal Army, but the plan for late war is to march it all the way back to try and defend Korea against the Soviets.

Apart from tilting the land war heavily towards India, I’m not seeing any other issues with having no house rules.
There are signs that the allies pivoted towards India early, with Australian I Corps in the theatre.
I’m expecting US Army presence in India at some point too, or maybe they went to Australia to backfill for I Aus Corps.
IJAAF recon are spotting some big stacks of troops now in NE India.
Tezpur has more than 20 units, with other bases typically having about 10 units each.
Southern and western areas of India must be lightly defended by now, but I don’t want to send KB west away from the Pacific to support landings in India.

From here, if the IJA in India get bogged down in big sieges or take heavy losses somewhere like Calcutta, the tide could turn quickly.

Allied 4E bombers have gone quiet recently, but haven’t been low level naval bombing (yet).
Air combat has typically stayed at or below 20k’ so far, no strato sweeps anywhere (yet!).

Even though I could, I’m not using Jakes on submarines, and I’m not buying out units to HQs that aren’t logical. eg: I’m not using HQ 13th Air Div to let Infantry Divisions ship out from China cheaply.

We will find out in a few hours when the turn comes back!
It helped fuel the attack orders at hex 60,38 in Bengal, despite the IJA troops only just having arrived and not having time to dig field forts yet. An allied movement arrow is spotted to the NW so at least some defenders are trying to escape this hex. On spotting that movement, GEN Itagaki was ordered to attack immediately.

The font might be a bit small to read, but this image shows the organisation of IJN ships.
The sad thing is it fits on one page!
Greyed out boxes show ships that are still under construction or conversion.

CL Oyodo will arrive in 3 days time, and when CV Kaga and BB Hyuga return in a month they will be like brand new ships.
Every CV is being built, even Shinano which I know some people switch off to accelerate the Unryus.
Instead I am accelerating the later arriving Unryus, with the aim of getting CVTF 2 shown here all to arrive in late 1944.
The strategy from here will be to try and avoid losing major IJN fleet units while chipping away at the USN as they advance.

With the assistance of land based air forces, I'll have a go at damaging the USN if they advance into the Marshalls/Gilberts or come again into the Coral Sea. I'll try not to make those future battles "all in" plays, to keep enough strength to have a serious go at defending the Marianas.

I doubt that the ships of CVTF #2 will arrive in time to help with defence of the Marianas, so the rough plan for them is to form the core of the fleet that will try and defend the Ryukyus / East China Sea.

With the current CV superiority I feel like I need to make an attempt at re-capturing Lunga and Tulagi.
The allies will either try to counter with plenty of surface combat power (BB, cA, CL, DDs) supported by Lexington/Saratoga and CVEs, or they will bide their time and wait until the second half of 1943 when the Essex class CVs start to arrive.

Is it worth risking the loss of IJN major fleet units to allied SCTFs to try and destroy the 1st and 3rd USMC Divisions and more of the USN's combat power?

The alternative is to give up the initiative and focus on building defensive positions now, keeping Combined Fleet intact and lurking in the background in the Pacific, ready to react to wherever the allies try to advance in mid/late 1943.

If the objectives can be achieved without losing too many IJN ships it will further delay the allies and increase Japan's chances of making it to 1 Jan 1944 with 3:1 victory points, but it could all go pear shaped and let the allies right back into the game.

This is the situation in Bengal just before the 25 Feb 43 turn was run.
Previous allied defensive positions at the likes of Imphal, Jorhat and Dimapur were built around 1x Infantry Division plus an Armoured unit, with supporting arms.
Based on the numbers of troops and units spotted by IJA recon, there are bigger defensive stacks forming now.

Defending units: this is a powerful stack based around the well trained 6th and 9th Aus Divs. The IJA plan may need to be revised to pocket this force, reduce their supply to zero then grind them down. This is a big force to try and clear from a base hex in Jungle terrain, but GEN Hata will move forward from Imphal to conduct a personal inspection.
I Australian Corps

Japanese Deliberate attack

Defending force 23299 troops, 443 guns, 377 vehicles, Assault Value = 908 – based on the squad disablements below, the raw AV after the battle should be <600. That means the ratio moves from about 4:1 to 6:1ish. There is a decent chance that if the allies stay here without reinforcement, the next deliberate attack will get a 2:1 result for the IJA.
Japanese adjusted assault: 2047
Allied adjusted defense: 1459
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker:
Japanese ground losses:
5404 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
3026 casualties reported
Squads: 49 destroyed, 318 disabled
Non Combat: 36 destroyed, 49 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 20 disabled
Guns lost 138 (8 destroyed, 130 disabled) – lots of guns disabled. This should help reduce the effectiveness of the next defence.
Units destroyed 1
Assaulting units:
Korea Army
2nd Army
1st Division
6th Division
8th Division
9th Division
10th Division - Infantry squads are at (132) damaged, 183 ready, so 10th Div will switch to Reserve mode

56th Division
Defending units:
40th Infantry Division – 40th Div took some decent damage

Here's the state of the IJNAF fighter units.
The only depth to this force is in the up-sized 108 pilot training units, or a handful of pilots who were WIA and still recovering.

IJAAF Aircraft Production and Research is a lot simpler than the Navy, with less mission profiles requiring less aircraft types, allowing research to focus heavily on fighters.

The IJAAF in this game has converted most LB to FB to try and counter allied heavy bombers, plus help train up more fighter pilots.
This version of the IJAAF shuns nearly everything to do with naval operations, so there are no Lily DBs or Army TBs.
Those missions are for Navy pilots only, although Sally and Helen pilots are begrudgingly learning how to fly ASW missions in rear areas.

The plan for late war tactics vs the USN will be for IJ Army bomber pilots to strike at higher altitudes while IJ Navy bomber pilots go low.

If you would have gone A6M5 => A6M5b => A6M5c, it would have not cost any supplies and the research would start immediately.

A6M5c research wasn’t an issue as I followed that path.
When A6M5c went into production I paid supply to upgrade the A6M5 production factories as A6M5b wasn’t researched so can’t be produced yet.
The A6M5c research factories advanced to A6M8 for free.

Just curious, is the A6M5c that much better than the A6M5? It's got armor, but sacrifices speed, maneuver to get it.

I'm assuming that the 13.2mm MG will help bring down USN carrier aircraft a lot quicker than the 7.7mm. They have a lot more punching power.
Not sure how the armour is factored into the algorithms, but it might help to make the aircraft a little more durable, or it might just help reduce some KIAs back to being WIAs.
