Status: offline 		As day breaks on 1 Mar 43 the N1K1 George is available for production!
Both A6M2 factories are changed to it and they are expanded back to 60 each.
The first unit should be flying them in SEAF by mid-April, finally allowing A6M2 to be relegated to the training and emergency reserve pool.
B6N2 will be ready to build in about 5 days too.

The IJAAF GENs are trying not to look jealous, as their new toy is the Helen transport!
The best Frank factory goes to 27(3).

Didn't invest too much in this plane, mostly on some backwater bases. Pushed the product of the K2 forward. Can get pretty quickly, and IMHO a better A/C at SR2.

Of course it does matter what kind of pressure you're under from your opponent.

True, but the 'c' is slower and less maneuverable.



The listed gun value is a bit like AV rating for LCUs, as it doesn’t tell the “firepower” story.

The A6M5 performed very well in the Dec 42 carrier battle near Santa Cruz, or the 2nd Battle of Santa Cruz in this game!
They sliced through the Wildcat CAP when escorting and dealt with the escorting Wildcats and got amongst the bombers while on defence.
I don’t think the A6M5 would punch through Hellcats or Corsairs in the same way, even with veteran pilots. Even the 5c will probably struggle, but the heavier MGs should knock allied planes out of the fight faster than the light 7.7mm MG of the 5.
A6M8 should be available in about Aug 43, which gets nearly all the speed of the 5 back and still has armour and decent MGs to go with the cannons.
A7M2 is also being researched, but won’t be much use if most of the CVs are already sunk before it arrives!

The next time KB goes into action it will have to be supported by land based air, especially George and Nell/Betty to help wear down allied CAP which already has some Corsairs, and will get Hellcats shortly...

The allied heavies have been quiet in SEAF, but I’ve got a feeling that’s about to change.
Tulagi and Lunga are being reinforced, so the George 1 should have lots if different jobs to do soon.
There are still 8x30 research factories on the George 2, so it is advancing at 16% per day.

CL Oyodo arrives at Hiroshima/Kure – Wikipedia is not kind to this ship: “Designed to support submarine operations, she was obsolete upon completion in 1943.” Oyodo was used as a transport, escort for larger ships in Combined Fleet and as a flagship. Oyodo will wait at Kure until CV Kaga and BB Hyuga complete their repairs, then will move south to join the Combined Fleet with them. The air radar set will be useful so she might join the CVL task force initially. There still aren't many ships in the Combined Fleet with radar.
SC Ch 35 arrives at Hakodate – ordered to move to Tarakan

She had an average skipper and there are plenty better on the reserve list.
The new CO has one of the best naval skills of unassigned CAPTs, with other stats that might be relevant at some point above 50, eg: leadership, inspiration, aggression.
In real life, CAPT Ariga was a Destroyer CO, then DesDiv commander. He took command of CA Chokai in Mar 43 and was Yamato’s last CO.

Based on Alfred’s recent post about naval crew experience in the Sydney v Kormoran post, her crew are a well salted bunch that deserve a CO to match.
I wonder how many days it will be until she’s hit by a USN sub launched torpedo?!

Status: offline 		With a new month due to start, I did a quick check for ships that will have upgrades available.
I've since learnt that you have to unload all cargo before the upgrade starts, so AKE Soya will be delayed for a few days while the ship is de-stuffed.
CDR Takao is also replaced by a decent (60 naval skill) but cautious (59 aggression) regular IJN officer, LCDR Yamataka.

Status: offline 		Here's the worm for 1 Mar 43.

If the allied points keep climbing at about 700 per month, they will end up with about 23k points on 1 Jan 44.
That’s a very big “if” as the allies are already getting Corsairs and Cleveland class CLs, with Hellcats and Essex class CVs on the way.
To win the war by then the Japanese will need >69k points to keep the ratio above 3:1.
That means I need to keep trying to score points at about 3:1 ratio each month. To do that, the pressure needs to stay on in Bengal and SEAF while also preparing to counter any big USN push somewhere in mid-1943.




So where will the allies strike first with their new Essex class CVs in mid-1943? From left to right around the map:

Burma Coast: to relieve the pressure on Bengal? The IJA are starting to defend this area with the 30s Divs from China.
Sumatra/Malaya: same purpose as above. The IJA are moving the 20s Divs from China to defend this area.
Java/DEI: open a new front from Perth/NW Australia. This area is the soft underbelly of the Empire. Timor and Ambon are garrisoned, but more troops are needed to defend Java.
PNG/Solomons: After reinforcing Guadalcanal, will the allies try to recapture Port Moresby or shift their focus to other theatres? The IJA are building up strong garrisons on PNG and Bougainville (Shortlands / Torokina) and land based IJN should make any advance here costly. This might push the allies to strike in a different theatre where they think the IJA/IJN are weaker.
Marshalls / Gilberts: The IJN are preparing for allied advances in this area with garrisons slowly increasing and forts building, but IJN land based air forces can’t really defend both SEAF and 4th Fleet axes at the same time. The IJN air forces will be spread out to search, but will concentrate quickly once an allied invasion is spotted.
Aleutians: Apart from some recent convoys that looked like resupply (possible reinforcement) arriving at Dutch Harbour, this area has been fairly quiet. Garrisons are relatively small in this area, but will be left in place to make the allies fight for each island.

Status: offline 		This is a summary from the IJA Int Staff, showing allied Divisions and either their known or assumed locations.
1st and 5th Aus Divs were last spotted in the Northern Territory but may have moved south.
24th and 32nd US Divs were last spotted at Port Moresby, now assumed to have been withdrawn to Queensland in Aus, but may have been moved to somewhere in SOPAC like Noumea or even to reinforce Guadalcanal in the last few days.
9th Aus and 40th US Div were recently confirmed as being on the Bengal front.
1st and 3rd USMC Divs are still at Lunga/Tulagi.

Just realised that the 6th and 8th Canadian Divs shown here might be a bit confusing as they have the same colours that I use for IJA Divs.
They can't be formed in game, but are representative of the separate Canadian Bdes that were subordinate to the Canadian Pacific Command.

Status: offline 		Summary from the IJN Int Staff, showing comparative strengths of the IJN vs the allied Fleets.
USN CVs and BBs have not been spotted for some time, so could be anywhere from Karachi to San Diego.
Despite the losses, if the allied navies concentrate somewhere they will be dangerous.

Except for the BB, CA, CL Divs shown in SWAF and 5th Fleet areas, all other Combined Fleet Divisions are at Manus Island.
The USN S-boat just lit up Manus Island with 10/10 recon on most task forces and the port, so all ships are ordered to rejoin their task forces and move into the Coral Sea to cover the withdrawal of 3x IJA Divisions from Port Moresby.

I put the idea to the War Council via the lunchtime Zoom meeting.
The main discussion was on how many ships would be needed, then how much fuel they would all need.
The Minister for Heavy Industry doesn’t think it would be a good investment in terms of fuel.
A few of the more cautious ADMs also questioned what the allies would do when they saw the IJN CVs so far from active theatres.

I’ve asked the IJN Plans staff to check where some closer strategic VP locations are.
I know they’ve thought about naval air strikes against the steel works and coal stockpiles at Newcastle and Port Kembla before.

Status: offline 		Orders for 3 Mar 43 in SEAF. There might be fireworks tomorrow, or it might just fizzle out.

Target hex for a naval strike is shown with the green circle. The target is an allied Cruiser task force assumed to be unloading at Tassafaronga, but with light rain it could just be xAKs.
86 enemy fighters are spotted at Lunga with 30 spotted at Tulagi, known to include F4U-1 Corsairs, so the strike ranges are set to reach Tassafaronga only, 13 hexes from Rabaul and 5 hexes from Vella Lavella.
72x A6M5 are ordered to sweep Tassafaronga from Shortlands with the aim of dragging any bleed over CAP up to 20k feet.
Another sweep of 27x A6M2 is ordered from Shortlands to Auki to try and drag some CAP away from Tassafaronga.
36x A6M2 are ordered to escort up to 45x Betty and 90x Nell from Rabaul, to strike at 6k feet at a range of 13 hexes.
Kaga-1 (A6M5 escort) and Kaga-2 (Val) are also ordered to strike from Vella Lavella, range 5 at 15k feet to try and get some DB hits.

Meanwhile, the allies spotted most of the Combined Fleet today moving SE towards their current positions. This might spook the horses or might prompt a more aggressive move. Most likely the allies withdraw ships, but send long range naval strikes and submarines towards the IJN CVs.

The red circle shows the rendezvous point for the IJN task forces shown here, with the aim still being to escort multiple amphibious task forces (m) with more coming from the north. Those amphibs need to withdraw the 3x IJA Divisions from Port Moresby.
The CVE task force will move to Rabaul to join BB Div 2 and CA Div 4 there in “reserve”.

All this planning could be for nought if the allied task forces run away at the sight of all these IJN task forces, but that would also be fine as it would allow the extraction from Port Moresby to go unchallenged. The IJN CVs prepare to launch strikes out to range 7, just in case the allies do move west to challenge them.

H8K1 Emily upgrading to H8K2 Emily at Osaka/Kyoto – still producing at only 10/month. The patrol plane pool has 25x H6K4, 13xH6K5 and 8x H8K1 spares. Front line units will slowly upgrade to the H8K2 leaving the H6K4/5 for Japan based units. All patrol units have naval search orders as the Jake Force is providing them all fully trained pilots. There are too few patrol units to use any of them for training.

Ace pilot Shibayama O. of 1st Sentai is promoted to 1LT – 1st Sentai now has 1xCAPT and 5x 1LT. Some of these 1LTs need to survive long enough to earn promotion to CAPT
AKE Soya taken out of commission to begin refit at Nagasaki/Sasebo – the soon to be famous AKE Soya is empty now so starts her upgrade.
38th Sentai/B converting to Ki-46-III Dinah – at Manus, but will move back to PNG for long range recon over North Queensland once the aircraft are ready.
Previous report of sinking of SS S-35 incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service
CLAA Atlanta is reported to have been sunk near Niuatoputapu on Mar 03, 1943
xAK Yochow is reported to have been sunk near Carnarvon on Mar 03, 1943
11th Sentai arrives at Myitkyina – will add more veteran pilots to the LRCAP over the next deliberate attack at 60,38 tomorrow.
2nd Tank Division has arrived to join the battle bringing much needed firepower, and all Divisions have supply “in the white”. 10th Division (340 AV) and the 4th Ind Mixed Regt (120 AV) will remain in Reserve mode to avoid getting smashed up, while everything else will conduct a deliberate attack.

Status: offline 		B6N2 Jill advanced 6% yesterday so isn’t getting the full engine bonus, as the Mitsubishi-32 pool is hovering just above 500. It is 505 right now, so the B6N2 will advance between 4% and 8% each day.
To avoid all four of these research factories changing to production factories I will switch one of them to B6N2a manually in 2-3 days time when the # gets to 92. One or two factories will then change the day after to just let the 4th research factory bring the B6N2 production forward to 3/43.
As 4/43 is still so far off I will keep one factory researching the B6N2 to advance it to 3/43. I would prefer to move the 4th and last research factory along to B6N2a and change the B5N2 Kate production factory to B6N2, but if the last factory accidently enters production that won’t be the end of the world. It will just cost me a bit more time to bring the B6N2a forward, but the benefit would be issuing B6N2 to the CVs faster.

I have just changed all settings to No, No, No to see if that helps in any way.
My assumptions are that “Upgd” only matters when it is a production factory; “Repair” no longer matters as it is fully repaired, and “Prod” only matters when it becomes a production factory. By setting “Prod” to no, it should avoid any aircraft being made and might give the “one day’s grace” being discussed on the main message board.

Status: offline 		HQ Korea (aka Bengal) Army, HQ 2nd Army, 8x Infantry Divisions and 2nd Tank Division are ordered to attack tomorrow.

11th Tank Regt is also going to flip a hexside by conducting an assault river crossing NE from Dimapur.
I hope it doesn't destroy itself in the process, but that will let reinforcements join the axis "north" of the river to threaten Tezpur along the Ledo-Tezpur road.

Status: offline 		In case you're unaware the only difference between the B6N2 and B6N2a is a radar. So it's not worth researching the 2a, unless you just want a few in the 'bank' for when the radar becomes active.
