HQ CEA orders HQ 2nd Area Army, 4x Army HQs, 10x Infantry Divisions, 1x Tank Regt and 9x Artillery/Mortar units to conduct a deliberate attack at Silchar.

With enemy defenders consisting of 2x Aus Divs and 1x Indian Div behind forts in Jungle Rough terrain, this is going to be bloody and a 1:1 ratio is not expected in this first attack. With some luck HQ CEA might help boost the adjusted AV to 1:1, but it is only 33% prepared as it was planning ahead to Tezpur until recently. Success will be to reduce defensive forts by 1 notch.

I noticed that some artillery only just arrived, so the ones shown here in move mode were all switched to combat mode. They will probably suffer from counter battery fire as they haven’t had time to dig in. Not to worry, they will get about 10 days to recover and dig in before Round 2. All Infantry Divs have between 1 and 2 for field forts.

33rd Infantry Div and 3rd Tank Regt will arrive a few days after this battle, so will be fresh to join Round 2.
1st Tank Div is moving here from a few hexes NE on jungle tracks so might arrive in time for Round 3.

Aerial bombardment will concentrate back on Silchar this turn from 10k'.

This image shows the state of the Army before the attack. We should see the result tomorrow...

Looks like you guys are playing without stacking limits! That really helps the Japanese player conquer China.

Wiping out China is much more difficult with stacking limits in place, because 40,000 Chinese can effectively block a critical road hex if it's 3X terrain

Correct, this war is a standard scenario 1 with no house rules.
AKA War in the Indo-Pacific: Field Marshal’s edition.

The allies will start having more fun in this game soon, once all their new toys start rolling off production lines.

Battle of Silchar
To: IGHQ
From: HQ India Expeditionary Army, Field Marshal Hata

Despite 8000 casualties (mostly disablements) the first deliberate attack was a success with forts dropped to 5.
The 7th Indian Division suffered most of the allied casualties, but the I Aus Corps Engrs were all but destroyed as well.
As expected, the 6th and 9th Aus Divs put up a solid defence and were barely scratched.
It is unknown who is in command of I Aus Corps but LGEN Lavarack is assumed. A message will be sent across the lines to HQ I Aus Corps recommending that they surrender before they are destroyed.
This allied stack received a leadership boost from somewhere, either from the Aus LGEN or from another allied HQ in range. GEN Slim is assumed to be at Tezpur with HQ Eastern/14th Army.
The allies are not expected to withdraw from Silchar following this battle. They may try and reinforce from their massed tank Corps one hex to the NW.
If the allied armour stack thins out too much LGEN Shichida, GOC 2nd Army, will be ordered to attack with the 2nd and 3rd IJA Tank Divisions and 5x Infantry Divisions. 1st Tank Division will keep moving to reinforce the Silchar stack with 33rd Infantry Div and 3rd Tank Regt. Once they arrive the raw strength of the Silchar force will be back above 5000 AV.

Based on the experience this Army gained at Chungking, all callsigns are ordered to keep digging in and prepare for the next attack in about 10 days time.
In a staff oversight, HQ 3rd Air Army have not been bombing the Silchar airfield so some Helens or Sallys will be ordered to do that while others bomb the troops from now on, to stop the forts from rebuilding.

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Mar 25, 43
SS I-32 terminates patrol and enters Soerabaja for repairs
Allied Aircraft sighted over Manus – the allies have long range recon over Manus now, so leaving ships there in pierside repair is dangerous. I don’t think the allies have bombers that can reach Manus from Lunga yet but I haven’t checked them all. All repaired ships in port have been ordered into task forces and to move to hexes that aren’t receiving visitors just in case.
PB4Y-1P Liberator sighted over Rabaul – lots more recon over SEAF bases. The allies must be planning their next moves, looking for the weaker bases.

Disruption and fatigue levels are better than expected so the next deliberate attack could be only 7 days away.
As soon as this stack is back in supply, and if disruption is back close to single digits, attack #2 will go in.
By then fatigue should be back <20. Morale is high and this looks like a good opportunity to increase the experience level of 53rd and 54th Div in particular.

The allies are moving at least one Armd unit forward to Silchar. Probably not the whole stack or they’ll all be cut off.
Disruption of the IJA divs is down to 10 or less despite not yet having full supply. Fatigue still needs a few more days to come down.

The allies are also reinforcing Lunga and moving troops overland to Tassafaronga.
Lots of allies ships moving but they are under substantial land based air support, assumed to be mostly USMC Corsairs.
The window might have closed on the chance to retake Guadalcanal, but there are still plenty of points on offer down here.
KB and escorts are generally moving home to take April 1943 radar upgrades. Air search radars will be critical in the months ahead.

The Foreign Minister has just informed IGHQ that LGEN Sir Leslie Morshead is GOC I Australian Corps.
A tough customer... let’s hope Silchar doesn’t turn into another Tobruk.
Good thing that Silchar is not on the coast!

Lots of action today with mixed results.
HMAS Perth was hit with a Betty torp on the IJN’s first night torpedo strike. On fire, heavy damage. Lots of other near misses. This should make the allies react!
HMAS Napier hit by a sub torp and reported sunk.

In the air over Bengal the allied air forces discover the LRCAP doctrine and try it out for good effect, shredding a couple of Helen/Sally Sentai.
Total aircraft losses counting ops were 12:38 in favour of the allies...

In other news, 201st Kukotai is issued with the first 27x N1K1 Georges at Rabaul.
Now it will take 15 days to get them all flying.
There are still 90x A6M2 in front line units but they will all be relegated by the end of April.
They will be replaced by George or reconditioned A6M5 that come off the CVs.

All CVL and CVE are safely back in Japan a few days ahead of their 4/43 upgrades with CVs two days from Yokosuka.

No major disasters today but a few errors and oversights that I will blame on the sponsor.
Allied night bombing over Katha in Burma shot down a handful of Nicks and at Port Moresby they hit a few planes on the ground.

I’d left the IJN night strikes on in SEAF but none flew, it seems to be a fairly low percentage play so I will just try it randomly.
I will go back to mostly using the Betty/Nell force on daytime long range search patrols.

The pendulum swings back to Japan with a 71:9 ratio in the air war today.
It’s like an All Blacks v Wallabies score!
Mostly RAF bombers getting shredded by the veteran 11th and 77th Sentai for no losses over Comilla.

SS RO-35 arrives at Maizuru – to 3rd Fleet, Soerabaja
SC Ch 40 arrives at Fukuyama – to ASW Div 41 at Soerabaja.

My OCD tendencies are starting to think about a reorg of the SC Ch divisions with the 1s to China Area Fleet; the 10s to 1st Fleet (Marianas); the 20s to 2nd Fleet (SWAF, Singapore to Rangoon); the 30s to 3rd Fleet (Southern Fleet, Balikpapan to Timor). The newly arriving 40s could go to 4th Fleet (Truk and the Marshalls) and the 50s could go to 5th Fleet (Kuriles - Aleutians).

The SC Cha divisions could be assigned to the Home Fleet. The 1s to the Osaka Naval Guard; 10s to 1st Naval District Yokosuka; 20s to 2nd ND Kure; 30s to 3ND Sasebo; 40s to 4th ND Maizuru and 50s to the Ominato Guard District.
What about SEAF the Admirals ask? The surviving W-## Escorts could move to SEAF for ASW and amphibious escort duty.

Sasebo 7th SNLF arrives at Nagasaki/Sasebo – subordinate to 4th Fleet but it will move to SWAF to join the rest of the Sasebo SNLF units. It has some tanks, so most likely to Port Blair where the 5th, 6th and 8th Sasebo SNLF are already digging in.

Takao Naval Base Force arrives at Takao – static unit.

Deliberate attack #2 at Silchar gets another 1:2 but does drop forts to 4.
Another 8000 IJA casualties, mostly disablements.
15th Div takes most of the hits again and will need to stay out of at least the next few attacks.
No leadership bonus for the IJA stack in either of the first two attacks which might have pushed it to 1:1.
With a bit of luck and the help of the 1st Tank Div (34 miles out) the next attack could get a 1:1 result.

Lots of the IJN carriers and a few CA and DD started their 4/43 upgrades.

Allied aircraft losses – the 2x Tank Divs have some good AA within the TOE, and with a decent amount of supply in the hex they put up effective fire here. If the Hurricane FR stands for Fighter/Recon then is this a sign that the RAF is running low on fighter aircraft in their pools?

Allied aircraft – the bomb cameras on the B17s identify the 3rd Tank Div markings, so the element of surprise for that unit is lost. As this is clear terrain it is very tempting to try a deliberate attack here once all units are back in full supply.

Defending force 39470 troops, 597 guns, 809 vehicles, Assault Value = 1306
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 4
Japanese adjusted assault: 4343 – this is 85% of the raw AV. No obvious leadership (+) bonus in this attack either, but forts are dropped to 4 so that makes it a success. Airfield bombing is keeping the airfield damaged so these forts should only drop from here.
Allied adjusted defense: 5349 – the adjusted AV here of 5349/1306 is about 4:1. Last deliberate attack it was 5:1 so that is encouraging to see.
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 4)

Defending units:

6th Australian Division
7th Indian Division – took more losses so is in pretty rough shape now
9th Australian Division
267th Armoured Brigade – the new unit since the first attack. It took some losses but helped the defence hold together. Without it the AV ratio may have been 1:1, so well played to the allies for pushing it forward.

Congrats on getting the george early it is a game changer for the Japanese. Now you just need to power towards the A7M2 and the k-84.

I've had 12x research factories on Frank since the start and they are repairing well. More will reach 30(0) in April.

I started with 4x research factories on A7M2 but added 4 more about halfway through 1942, I think when the Tojo research finished. The best A7M2 factory is about 16(14) so still a long way to go before research starts.

A6M8 has 6x research factories on it from the Rufe - A6M5 - A6M5c research so is advancing the A6M8 at 12% per day. My estimate is that the A6M8 will be the front line IJN CV fighter for about 6 months (mostly late 1943) before the A7M2 starts to arrive.

Looking at the TOE of the new Takao Naval Base Force and noticed the “upgrade” from a 40mm to a 25mm AA gun.
I asked VADM Shimakazi what the difference was so he summarised the stats here.
The 25mm T96 gives up 1000’ in ceiling but has triple the effect.
By the time the 40mm T05 arrives in 9/45 the war might already be over!

That looks good.

But when I posted stuff in German for Oktoberfest, I am called a Nazi.

Saw those exchanges Joe, I didn’t read the words but enjoyed the pictures!

I’ll post the 1 Apr 43 worm here once I get a chance to transfer the data.
The scores is nearly 51k : just under 15k so still about 3.5:1 VP ratio.

A quiet day with no pilots lost in any category.
Movement spotted NW out of Silchar, but after pondering the options I’m guessing it is just a small unit like the damaged engineers and not a withdrawal.

Repairs completed on ACM Fuji Maru #3 at Truk, ship returned to service – the remaining Kiso class PB are being converted to ACM to support additional minefields in SEAF. 201 Ku S-1 Det converting to A6M5 Zero – this was a mistake, it will upgrade to George shortly as soon as 9x George are available in the pool.
Sasebo 7th SNLF - some devices have been upgraded at Nagasaki/Sasebo
Loss of E W-15 on Apr 02, 1943 is admitted

This shows the hexside situation on the Bengal Front with IJA HQ locations. There are too many IJA Divs to show them all!

1st Tank Div is moving SW from the HQ Korea Army hex. A Mdm Arty regt is moving west and the HQ is faking a move NW as a deception tactic to keep the allies guessing what is moving.

A few AT gun regts are moving from the 25th Army stack “east” through the open terrain to add some AT capability to the Silchar hex and the one NW of Silchar.

The 9th Tank Regt and the 9th IJAAF Base Force are moving from Katha to Silchar.
Other units that can be seen here moving forward from Burma are generally AA units.

The 4x IJA Divs mentioned earlier that are moving to reinforce are leaving the Rangoon - Moulmein area.

58th Div can be seen approaching Paoshan from the east.

Here's a picture of the SEAF "front line". The allies are well established on Guadalcanal now.
It might be too tough to try and retake it so it might be a better option to just strengthen the nearby defences.
The IJA 16th, 21st and 52nd Divs are still in reserve at Manus Island with plenty of AP/AK to lift them.
The remaining components of the 40s Divs will arrive in 40 and 67 days, so the next few months will bring a much needed boost to IJA infantry strength.

Just scrolled back to check and it only took from 26 Mar to 5 Apr to save 100k supply at Tokyo.
At that rate I’ll see if I can get supply above 1M at Tokyo by the end of the month.

Also, Port Arthur has over 600k of supply now so I need to check that trend and see if I can start importing a bit of supply from CMK now that theatre has gone quiet.
I don’t use tracker but I keep the saves from the 1st of each month to gather data from.
When I get a chance I’ll go back and check the supply status of Port Arthur for the last few months.
It is building a decent little fuel and oil stockpile too so some of that might be able to move to Japan too.

While on this topic, fuel and oil are generally moving well in auto convoys from southern areas.
I might check the status of key bases and summarise on a strategic map later.
There are no spare TKs or AOs.

The staff has had a chance to review Port Arthur's stats:

The chart above shows the economic situation in China since the start of the war, with full occupation in Nov/Dec 1942.
Since then, fuel and oil are generally trending down so I won’t export any of them from CMK but will just check that trend each quarter.

Fuel will keep getting used by industry until the allies start to interfere.

Oil is trending down faster and looks like about 100k is being used per year. If that continues then oil will run out in the first half of 1945.

Resources are generally all being drawn to Fusan with regular convoys moving them across the Tsushima Strait to Japan. That will continue for as long as the hexes between Fusan and Shimonoseki are secure.

Supply is the most interesting as it is definitely trending up. After a big jump over the 1942/43 new year period the rate of increase has reduced to about 30k/month for the last few months. I might let that supply stockpile grow to about 1M to prepare for all the late war Army reinforcements that will arrive throughout the China-Manchukuo-Korea theatre before exporting any supply back to Japan, but it is good to know there is a growing supply reserve so close to the Home Islands.

The allies LRCAP Silchar again. IJAAF sweeps do well but later some bombers are shot down by remnant CAP.
The big news is that the IJA stacks at Silchar and the hex NW are back in full supply.
Both stacks are ordered to attack tomorrow.

LGEN Shichida, GOC 2nd Army, requests permission to attack in the hex NW of Silchar in the clear terrain.
Despite no aerial bombardment available to support this hex, IGHQ approve his deliberate attack plan as the 2nd and 3rd Tank Divs are well supported by 5 veteran Infantry Divs.
The last artillery bombardment here was on 17 Mar but no movement has been spotted since.
The defenders are still believed to be the following, less the 267th Armd Bde but plus the shattered Aus Engr Regt that won’t add anything to the defence.

Raw AV ratio is 3108 : 739 which is 4.2:1.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Mar 17, 43
Ground combat at 59,38 (near Silchar)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 12516 troops, 106 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2724 – this raw AV is now 3108 with the addition of the 2nd and 3rd Tank Divs
Defending force 15902 troops, 253 guns, 1162 vehicles, Assault Value = 872 – assuming that this is a bit less than 800 now, the raw AV ratio is better than 3:1 and could almost be 4:1. The only doubts on the HQ 2nd Army staff is the firepower difference between the two stacks. Fingers are crossed that the IJA Type 2 Medium Tanks can outperform the allied tanks and the mass of IJA infantry can overwhelm the defenders.

Defending units:
267th Armoured Brigade – this Bde has since moved to Silchar, taking more than 100AV with it. With a bit of luck this allied stack could be pushed backwards, which would provide the chance to trap the Aus I Corps at Silchar and capture all the defenders there within the next couple of attacks. (ie: before the end of April).
150th RAC Regiment – 53 AV previously so shouldn’t hold up well
7th Armoured Brigade – 89 AV so may not be fully equipped yet
50th Tank Brigade – 198 AV could do some damage before it is reduced.
4th Armoured Brigade – 225 AV could also do some damage, depending on what tanks it has

268th Motorised Brigade – 150 AV but as a motorised Bde it won’t all be tanks.
2nd Loyal Battalion – 24AV of infantry, this unit should be destroyed.
8th Belfast Heavy AA Regiment – 3x AA regts which I don’t believe fight as emergency anti-tank guns, so these could be destroyed
26th Indian Mountain Gun Regiment – only 1x Mtn gun regt, so not a lot of artillery unless the Armd Bdes have some medium guns embedded.
78th Light AA Regiment
12th Indian Heavy AA Regiment

Didn't have to wait long for the turn to come back.

Forts at Silchar are dropped to 3 so this was a “success” but 12th Div takes the brunt today with almost all infantry disabled.
12th Div had only 3% of its TOE destroyed so it will recover in time, but will join 15th Div on the sidelines for the rest of this battle.
The allied stack had x5 bonus to its raw AV, but the next battle in hex 59,38 will influence the next attack here at Silchar as this allied stack is about to be cut off from resupply and completely surrounded.

Ground combat at Silchar (59,39)
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 132075 troops, 1469 guns, 562 vehicles, Assault Value = 4657
Defending force 37628 troops, 598 guns, 781 vehicles, Assault Value = 1220
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 3
Japanese adjusted assault: 4826
Allied adjusted defense: 6129
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 3)
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), leaders(+), experience(-)
Attacker:
Japanese ground losses:
6115 casualties reported
Squads: 50 destroyed, 650 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 65 disabled
Engineers: 4 destroyed, 89 disabled
Guns lost 101 (9 destroyed, 92 disabled)
Vehicles lost 31 (2 destroyed, 29 disabled)
Allied ground losses:
2428 casualties reported
Squads: 20 destroyed, 394 disabled – some good numbers disabled here that should drop the allied raw AV well under 1000.
Non Combat: 4 destroyed, 51 disabled
Engineers: 6 destroyed, 56 disabled
Guns lost 59 (3 destroyed, 56 disabled)
Vehicles lost 26 (5 destroyed, 21 disabled)
Defending units:
6th Australian Division
7th Indian Division
267th Armoured Brigade
9th Australian Division
2/13th Field Regiment
I Australian Corps
23rd Indian Mountain Gun Regiment
