This is the situation in Bengal on 23 Apr 43, just before the 31st Infantry Regt was pushed backwards on 24 Apr 43 to the NE.
More allied units are moving into the open terrain NE of Dacca, providing lots of targets for IJAAF bombers.
It looks like the allied air forces have withdrawn from Dacca and Tezpur, back to Calcutta and Rangpur respectively, so they are still a threat via area CAP and LRCAP.

Cuttack has been spotted as vacant for the last week or so of recon, so a Raiding Regt will para drop in there soon just for a bit of fun.
That should also get the allies thinking about defending other bases up to 11 hexes from an IJAAF airfield.
There is a level 1 airfield at Cuttack, so the Raiders can also be extracted if required.

So far it is 3 votes for the Nick-A and none for the Nick-C.

I get the argument for the Nick-A having more chances to cause at least some damage via the 2x12.7mm MGs, but we don't know exactly how that "6" accuracy of the 30mm cannon is used by the game. It does suggest a very low chance of a hit, but ships and bombers are larger targets than enemy fighters so I assume that the size and maneuverability of the target factors into the chances of a hit.

I've always understood accuracy for aircraft weapons as a scale from 0-100, with 100 being perfect accuracy.

That's not backed up by anything other than educated guesswork on my part, but it is worth noting that the aircraft weapons with the greatest accuracy are all fairly small, fast firing machine guns (which makes sense from an air combat standpoint). As rate of fire works in with the accuracy stat, it makes sense that the Nick C's cannon gets a poor score as IIRC it was a very slow firing weapon (and maybe even had to be reloaded/cycled by the pilot?)

The vast majority (around 75%) of aircraft weapons have accuracy values in the 20-40 range, so that's a good reference for how bad the Nick C's cannon is.

quote:

As in real life, the days of the Nick being useful as a bomber interceptor will be limited to the time that the allies fly unescorted raids.
The allies haven't been doing much of that lately in this game, but they must have a lot of 4E bombers on the map somewhere so it could start again in Bengal or SEAF any day now.

Once the P=47s and P-51s are able to escort, Nick will have to be relegated to auxiliary night fighter and low level naval attack missions.
The P-38Gs (13 normal range with drop tanks) are already a big threat to the Nick.
As soon as Frank arrives the Nick will be a 2nd tier aircraft anyway.

The Nick is very durable, as far as Japanese fighters go. Because of that, I like to mix it in sometimes with frontline CAP to add a bit of a damage sponge. It can't hold it's own against the newer Allied airframes, however.

It's well suited to the night fighter and low-nav roles too.

Center line mounted weapons are more accurate that wing mounted weapons. I do believe that the ammo load may also have an effect but it may not.

I've had a few of these encounters and the Nick's came out well. The numbers of a/c we pretty much even and the P-38's were in an escort roll. I have no idea what the skill sets and experience were for the 38's.

One factor I don't think anyone mentioned: Production. The Nick-A uses the Ha-35 engine, which alot of models use. The Nick-C uses the Ha-31 engine....at this point it's likely you have no models using that engine.

What does your engine production situation look like, do you have surplus of the Ha-35, or no?

For production reasons, if you have 2 production lines, it might make sense to produce BOTH purely because of the engine pools

Good point on engines, it’s another thing to consider.
My pre-war plan was to go to Nick-C so I have about 700 Ha-31s and still building in anticipation of needing them.
I also have about 1100 Ha-35s with multiple aircraft using them.
The plan is to use all of these engines up by the end of the war.
If I don’t change the Nick-A to -C I will need to update my engine build plan, but the Supply has already been “invested” into those Ha-31 engine factories.

Supply increased at Tokyo by 12k overnight.
I've always wondered how people build up the supply stockpile in the Home Islands into the millions, but at that rate it would only take 84 days to get the Tokyo stockpile to 2 million.
I did some pre-war estimates which indicated about 1.6M supply in Japan by now, so that is close to being the case.
I should be able to get the Tokyo supply stockpile over 2 million before the end of 1943.
There is probably about 500k of supply spread through all the other cities in Japan to help with industry repairs.

If you have more than 1 production line on the Nick, I would do half and half; Nick-A is slightly better IMO, but it's not a huge difference. That would give you flexibility on which engine you use.

But you need to produce the Nick-C, rather than throw all those engines out. It sounds like you over-expanded both Ha-31 and Ha-35 lines, but too late to take it back.

Ha-35 though you need for A6M (until you get Sam), Ki-43 (2nd-tier IJA fighter, but useful), and some late-war Kamikazes. Also Ki-48, but I am not a fan of those and their 100kg bombs. Ha-35 has it's uses all the way through the war.

Ha-31 has no other worthwhile use, so you may as well start building the Nick-C.

Without giving away too much to my opponent, it is very difficult to get supply into the millions with all the demand on industry IMO if you playing DDB (no supply for refineries). You should have most of your A/C and Engine expenditures done by now, but supply consumption increases with larger IJA and more Allied bombing. I don't think your experience is unusual. What is your fuel and resources stockpile look like in the Home Islands? The burn rate is roughly 12K fuel a day, and something like 80K Resources, and at some point your ability to ship more in could be limited.....

I’ve converted most LB to FB so Ha-31 will be used to build 2x60 Nick-C per month plus 1x30 Nick-D. That’s a demand of 300 engines per month.
As the fight moves over IJAAF airfields the plan is to give the jockeys a few horses to ride each day, if they can bail out and survive the aircraft being shot out from under them.
Randy FB won’t arrive until Nov 44 so Nick-C will help backup Frank on 4E interceptor duty until then.

Ha-35 engine factories will change to Ha-43 in Jan 1944. The pool of Ha-35 will all be used up by building some late war Oscars, Irving NF and Toka.

A rare event with no turn to run this evening.
We’ve been spinning a turn a day with very few exceptions, so no complaints.
It will give me a chance to do some planning for future ops in Bengal and possibly SEAF.

You should have most of your A/C and Engine expenditures done by now, but supply consumption increases with larger IJA and more Allied bombing. I don't think your experience is unusual.

Lots of supply still needed for aircraft research then expansions to ramp up some production. Without checking my forecast spreadsheet for details, but there is still at least a few 100k more worth of supply to go into the later war aircraft production expansion. That will be on top of the 543k of supply still to be spent repairing all research factories, but that 543k of supply spend will be spread out over the next year or so.

There is also still a reasonable amount of engine expansion planned on the Ha-43 and NE Turbojet when they start production. At least a few 100k of supply worth from memory, without checking the details.

What is your fuel and resources stockpile look like in the Home Islands? The burn rate is roughly 12K fuel a day, and something like 80K Resources, and at some point your ability to ship more in could be limited.....

This image summarises the trend for stockpiles at Tokyo with a few notes. All are tracking fairly close to pre-war estimates so no concerns on this front.

Only about 90 days worth of fuel at Tokyo and about 90 days worth of resources at Shimonoseki.

The Great Urumchi Oil Dilemma has been on my list to look into for months...
I assume I need to create demand for Oil closer than Port Arthur, but might need to export Oil from there too, to create a suction effect higher up the pipeline.
I would need to divert TK from other tasks as I don’t have any spare.

Sian Refineries were zeroed when captured so that wouldn’t be helping, as there is zero demand for Oil at Sian at the moment.
I’ve been meaning to check the status of all Oil and Refineries in CMK.
If I stockpile Oil at Pt Arthur and then repair Sian Refineries that might create an excess of Refineries to change the demand situation.
If not, I can see that export would be the way to increase demand for Oil throughout this economic region.

Seems like your Resource stockpile is pretty good. Your fuel seems low in the Home Islands/Manila for this stage; you should have enough tankers to move it all unless you've suffered significant losses.]

IMO, expanding HI in Singapore and Java makes alot of sense, because then you get some local supply production....but probably a bit late for that

I would not repair refineries unless you have a shortage of refineries. Just move the oil to Japan from Port Arthur, that should get the oil moving to Port Arthur. You could even prime the pump at Fusan by dumping some oil there, stockpiling it, then moving it by CS convoys to Japan.

Still trying to find time to check some details on this, but I’m thinking of stockpiling Oil at Port Arthur and creating more demand for Oil somewhere a bit closer like at Tientsin. That way the Oil won’t be drawn away from Port Arthur but might start to be sucked down through Sian.
The idea of repairing a few Refinery points at Sian is to create at least some demand for Oil there which might get it started on the journey from Urumchi.

Yeah, I've tried to draw oil to Port Arthur through Tientsin, and it was a no-go. I've been able to get Port Arthur to draw some oil when its supply is low, but that resulted in its failure to produce fuel at times, as its oil supply became too low.

If you get some small tankers up the river you can get oil to be drawn to Hankow. I've got Urumchi at about 30k oil and dropping. It does take time.

That looks like the way to go.
Here is a picture of the current status. Things you do on a lazy Friday night in!

I pressed hotkey 5 and instead of %s showing it just shows yellow dots.
I assume this means that I need to have some Oil demand along this pipeline to get the black stuff flowing.

If I set Port Arthur Oil to stockpile, exporting Oil from Hankow might be enough to get the Oil pipeline shown here as the dashed line to flow.
The excess Oil being produced at Lanchow and Sian might be a problem, that's why I'm thinking of repairing these Refineries.
28k of supply isn't much in the big scheme of things, seeing as it will just get bombed out come 1944 anyway!

How to get the fuel to move without crashing Heavy Industry... maybe I just turn the Urumchi refineries off and get the Oil moving south.

1x allied BB was spotted just south of Diamond Harbour. It looked like it could be lining up a bombardment run on Chittagong, but with only one ship spotted it might just be probing.

A miracle occurred, the 15(15) Frank factory at Tokyo is now 16(14)!

I think that if you use CS convoys, the program also figures that in for the demand as well. I don't know for sure but it seemed to work that way when I put a little oil at Fusan then shipped it to Japan in a CS convoy. Some oil always showed up in Fusan.

What's your ETA on the Frank-a? How many factories do you have researching it?

I feel like you should be pretty far along with the Frank-a by now, curious how close you are to getting it

Even without any CS Oil convoys from China yet there are a few spots of Oil being drawn to some Ports in CMK.
Hankow, Shanghai, Fusan all have some Oil with no obvious demand other than the Port itself.
CS Oil convoy from any of them would then pull Oil in from further up the catchment.
Export of oil from Fusan would draw it from the Manchukuo oil fields and Port Arthur so might not draw from China.

I will try to export from Hankow first as it looks closest to the Urumchi-Lanchow-Sian oil pipeline and looks like it would be pulling oil down the map with the wind behind it.

12x size 30 factories on Frank A since day 1.
Two are fully repaired with research at 88% to 4/44, more will boost research in May.

With engine bonus to research, production should start in Jul/Aug 43 depending on when the rest of the research factories come on line.

The 60s Divs are all C-Type TOE best suited for counter-insurgency operations.
Garrison locations are shown here:

60 Div Shanghai
61 Div Tokyo
62 Div Jehol
63 Div Peiping
64 Div Shanghai
65 Div Hangchow
66 Div Taichu, Formosa Army 7/44
68 Div Canton
69 Div Tientsin

Now that 64 Div is at Shanghai, the 2nd Ind Mixed Regt can move out. It is planning for Naha as it will form the 44th Ind Mixed Bde which will concentrate there in 381 days. It will move to Fusan to add to the Manchukuo garrison temporarily before being bought out to Southern Army.

Shanghai SNLF could also be bought out for overseas service somewhere. TBC where, maybe one of the islands in the East China Sea. Alternatives include sending it to Southern Fleet with orders to raid the NW Australia coast again. Or it could move to NEAF to help garrison Sakhalin or the Kuriles.
