The Maebashi Frank-A factory went to 30(0) so that is 3x 30 fully repaired now. Two days until the due date advances to 3/44.

The combined allied air forces have started night bombing of Chittagong with the apparent aim of burning it to the ground.
Scorched earth policy seems to be the aim.

The 60s Divs are all C-Type TOE best suited for counter-insurgency operations.
Garrison locations are shown here:

60 Div Shanghai
61 Div Tokyo
62 Div Jehol
63 Div Peiping
64 Div Shanghai
65 Div Hangchow
66 Div Taichu, Formosa Army 7/44
68 Div Canton
69 Div Tientsin

Some of the Type C divisions are also completely air transportable, IIRC.

Agree with you on the COIN mission for them, but I am fond of using these units as garrisons for major islands with static CD guns (Truk, Saipan, Babeldoab). With decent forts plus the static DP guns doing double duty in bolstering the anaemic artillery park of the C-types, they hit that sweet spot where a position becomes fairly challenging to invade without requiring a decent division to do it.

Combine these two things and I normally try to optimise China garrisons to get one or two of them bought out for CentPac/SWPAC/Philippines.

The IJ don't have the airlift capacity of the Allies, but they have a good number of transport squadrons, and having a hunk of 300 or so AV that you can move without the need for shipping can come into it's own in the late war when you need reinforcements but ships have a hard time moving freely.

The IJA 1st Tank Div could be in BIG trouble.

The 31st US Infantry Regt was forced to retreat again, but it moved across the river into Tezpur instead of NW along the good road towards Rangpur.
1st Tank Div was set to pursue. It pursued across the river to the "east" so now finds itself in Tezpur facing 70k allied troops in 18 units...

Lots of units are ordered to move into Tezpur from multiple directions, but I don't think any will arrive tomorrow.
If the allies attack here before reinforcements arrive they will destroy a lot of IJA tanks...

In anticipation of this hex to be the focus of a big allied bombing raid tomorrow, all Tojos in range are set to LRCAP and all available bombers are set to ground attack with some Oscar/Nick escorts.

The best outcome for 1st Tank Div will be for the allies to withdraw.
There's a good chance I'll get this turn back later today so won't have long to wait to find out.

Plan A was for the Tank Corps to push forward to the hex just SE of Rangpur and secure that hex with an Infantry Div or two.
The Tank Corps was then going to turn and follow the yellow arrow shown here to start clearing the multiple allied Infantry Divs spotted in the clear terrain and then close on Dacca.

With 1 Tank Div going off script yesterday, Plan A is postponed and Tezpur will now be attacked in a frontal assault completely lacking in any finesse.

The allied stack with HQ 3rd Special Force Division will be attacked today as it is spotted trying to move NW to escape and should be low on supply by now.
The IJA 15th Tank Regt is moving to block that path, but the allied light infantry will be moving faster than the tanks through the jungle.

At Tezpur, LGEN Oba is facing the 18 enemy units with 74k troops shown by the call out box.

1st Tank Div was given a bloody nose by an allied shock attack but withdraws back across the river in reasonably good order.
The losses are shown in the attached image, but I was expecting worse.

The allied commander took his opportunity and this will no doubt boost allied morale...

As expected, no other IJA units moved in to Tezpur so the reinforcement moves by frontal assauls are cancelled and Plan A will resume.
Phase 1 moves are shown with solid red arrows, deception moves in dotted red, phase 2 move is in yellow.

The HQ 3rd Special Force stack wasn't out of supply so defended reasonably well, but the 20th Indian Div took quite a few losses and this should hurt their supply situation further.

In far better news, 6th Ku S-1/B returns. It was bought back after being sunk on CVE Unyo 3 Dec 42.
27 very good pilots return with it. The unit is immediately upgraded to A6M5.

I also noticed that this fraction no longer has a withdrawal date, while the other two thirds still have their withdrawal set to 4 Mar 1944.
The 6th Ku S-1 has been renamed 204 Ku S-1, but that name won't take effect until the thirds are recombined.
Now that this Hikotai doesn't have a withdrawal date I will probably keep it separate so it can stay in the game for the rest of the war.

A very nice picture, very informative. Thank you.

As far as that air fragment, could you resize it again?

Still one more division that'll be in recoup mode for a while. Don't want too many of those if you wish to win.

My estimate is that'll be best if you can cut this local off and force him to come to you to try and save it.

Still one more division that'll be in recoup mode for a while. Don't want too many of those if you wish to win.

Indeed. Field Marshal Hata has been ordered to get his Division Commanders under control.

This reminds me that I need to resize some more zero units in my own PBEM. I have like 300 a6m2 in the pool that could be training pilots.

The results for 2nd to 6th May are in but the staff are getting slack with writing up the turns.
5x 30 Frank factories are repaired now so that is +10% per day already.

Bengal has been busy and will only get busier.
SEAF has gone quiet, allowing lots of George-1 to get ready to try and counter the next 4E bomber raid.

Ground combat at Cuttack (48,37)
Japanese Shock attack – tried a sneaky air assault as recon was showing Cuttack as vacant for the last few weeks. The Foreign Minister passed on the following from Allied Supreme Command:

“Cheeky. Looks like your paras stumbled into the train yard just as my engineers were disembarking. I had forgotten I’d moved the garrison out and your overflights reminded me it needed some work VP harvesting-wise, so I sent a base force over. I thought they were out of range of your paras. They were still unpacking when u arrived :0)”

Looks like I left the para drop a few days too late… This was just going to be a nuisance raid anyway, but it could force the allies to protect some more rear area bases.

Ground combat at 62,36 (near Tezpur)
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 31555 troops, 346 guns, 188 vehicles, Assault Value = 1171
Defending force 16736 troops, 215 guns, 180 vehicles, Assault Value = 541
Japanese adjusted assault: 488
Allied adjusted defense: 2530
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 5
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+) – there is no op mode (-) so this stack must still be in combat mode, which would be very slow to move. There might be time to move some infantry to join the 15th Tank Regt to increase the chances of creating a true “blocking” force. Also still no supply (-), but the IJAAF bombers will keep visiting to try and run their supply down.
Attacker:
Japanese ground losses:
3878 casualties reported – forgot about this one, for good reason!
Squads: 7 destroyed, 166 disabled – 11th Div took most of these casualties.
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 34 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 18 disabled
Vehicles lost 20 (2 destroyed, 18 disabled)
Allied ground losses: this allied stack should be surrounded tomorrow but can still move out of this hex over the NW hexside that the allies still control. Only the 15th Tank Regt is there, which won’t be strong enough to block this whole allied force on its own, if all allied units are moving.
312 casualties reported
Squads: 12 destroyed, 38 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 9 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 5 (1 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Assaulting units: movement orders summarised below
23rd Army – stay in hex
11th Division – stay in hex
51st Division – stay in hex
21st Ind.Mixed Brigade – move west then NE to join the 15th Tank Regt in the block position. It might not arrive in time, but worth a shot.
41st Infantry Regiment – same as above.
11th Tank Regiment – stay in hex
23rd Tank Regiment – stay in hex
21st Mortar Battalion – stay in hex
27th Fld AA Machinecannon Company – stay in hex
Defending units:
3rd (Special Force) Division
20th Indian Division – down to about 200 AV
75th Indian Brigade - zeroed
77th Chindit Brigade – still 100+ AV
111th Chindit Brigade – still 100+ AV

The Allied 3rd (SF) Div stack is now cut off by the less than mighty 15th Tank Regt. It only has 28 tanks, which is less than most IJA Tank Regts.
Good to see the 75th Indian Bde zeroed at the start of the combat animation, it must be in bad shape.
While the IJA 11th Div and 21st IMB took heavy disablements, they have very few vacancies as most are just disabled squads.

LGEN Sakai is keen to destroy this allied stack, but the terrain is working against his troops. He is counselled to be patient.
IGHQ Int staff doubt that every defending unit is moving NW, possibly only one of them judging by previous allied moves.
If only one allied unit moves NW, 23rd Army could afford to wait about 7 days before attacking here again. The allies could be out of supply by then, while the IJA will have recovered some strength and will be in supply.

If only the zeroed 75th Indian Bde moves NW then 15th Tank Regt could destroy it.

The 41st Infantry Regt and 21st IMB will move W then NE to try and join the 15th Tank Regt blocking position.
They can “recover” there in the jungle as they won’t be able to attack again against the big allied stack without taking heavy losses.

Elsewhere on this front:
With the 10th Div stack is the 1st Tank Div and 4th Div. Both 1st Tank Div and 4th Div will move to join the “A” stack.
10th, 13th and 17th Div will threaten Rangpur and dig into defensive positions in the Jungle terrain.
“A” stack has the 2nd and 3rd Tank Divs. The 1st, 8th and 9th Infantry Divs are moving to join the Tank Divs from the NE (10th Div hex).
“B” stack has 3rd and 6th Divs. 6th Div is moving NW to join the A stack hex, while 3rd Div is moving west in combat mode to try and time its arrival for when the A stack gets there.
“C” stack has HQ 25th Army, Imperial Guards, 18th Div and 27th Div. 15th Div is recovering so will defend. 5th Div is concentrating there from the Arakan coast.

The plan is for “A” and “B” stacks to clear the far bank of the Meghna River to allow the 25th Army to cross uncontested and advance to Dacca.

Moving to reinforce are the 20th, 34th, 35th and 36th Divs. TBC whether they will move to help capture Dacca or move to help cut off and capture Tezpur.
The initial plan was Dacca, but by the time they get to Silchar (54th Div hex) they may not be needed.

54th Div is recovering at Silchar at about 84% of TOE. Mostly just infantry squads disabled now.
12th Div is similar, recovering at Chittagong.
33rd Div is split in thirds and is guarding the Arakan coast, having taken over from 5th Div.

The 2nd and 3rd Tank Divs took the brunt of the anticipated allied heavy bomber raids, with all other units moving into position during the day.
This IJA stack will attack tomorrow and should do a lot of damage to the defenders. It might be the last dance for the 150th RAC Regt.

The 2x understrength allied Divs should retreat, but in which direction?! NW, W or SW or the only options.
The J2’s best guess is NW towards Rangpur, but based on the recent 1st Tank Div debacle I will not be betting my house or any body parts on that.

After clearing this hex, the IJA charge will continue to the SW with the aim of opening up the river crossing one hex NE of Comilla.
It feels good to have broken the tanks out into open country!

While the allied 4E bombers are a very large threat, there is nothing left for this stack to do but charge on to capture the size 8 airfield at Dacca.

If the allies keep throwing their bombers at the IJA ground troops, I am hoping that offers up a good opportunity to score points by destroying (and causing write offs) to allied heavy bombers.
It remains to be seen whether that will provide enough points to extend the current 3.4:1 VP ratio, but if it only helps maintain it that will edge things closer to victory on 1 Jan 1944.

If the IJAAF can score better than a 4:1 ratio in fighters each day, or just a 2:1 ratio in allied heavy bombers to fighter losses each day, that will help edge things closer towards 4:1 and help make 3:1 easier to maintain.
That is also based on the assumption that the IJA will score a lot more points in the ground war than the allies for the next few weeks.

At the end of the day, it looks like only 2x Tojo pilots were KIA and 3x WIA.
Most aircraft are serviceable and due to the 20% on rest the same sort of numbers should fly again tomorrow.
All Sentai have 133% pilots so they should be getting enough rest.

I think the IJAAF can outlast the allied fighters and start to wear them down, but the enemy B24s are the real killers.
Frank can’t come soon enough, but they are still a few months away.

Oscar IIb (with armour) started production on 1 May at a rate of 60/month (2/day) but they won’t be a game changer.
They will slowly replace the remaining Oscar IIa to keep some planes around for a mix of escort and rear area CAP duty. Oscar IIa will slowly transition to the training Sentai in rear areas.

This is the VP worm as at 1 May 43.
The ratio is still bouncing along at about 3.4:1, so the challenge for the rest of 1943 is to stay above 3:1.

The IJN has 6x CV available vs 2x USN CVs for the next few months, so it feels like I need to do something with that advantage.
The KB will move back to the SEAF/4th Fleet area. They might “invest” some fuel in a long range patrol of allied convoy routes to try and sink some ships away from the big stacks of Corsairs that are at the forward allied air bases.
Or to conserve fuel they could just sit and wait at Truk to be ready to counter any allied advances.

A few big wins on the ground in Bengal in the next few months would also help.
Something big like an invasion of Ceylon would need the IJN CVs to support it, but that would probably just prompt allied moves in places like the Marshalls or towards Bougainville from Guadalcanal.

The most obvious next allied move in mid-43 is into the Marshalls, but vs a human opponent there is no telling what surprise moves they might spring once they have some Essex class CVs.

Current situation, there are no IJA Divisions in the Marshalls.
Mostly the smaller IJN land units are scattered throughout.
Most bases have a JNAF AFU with a Naval guard unit.
Base forces, SNLF, 2x Air Flot HQs.
A fair few shorter range subs on defensive patrols.
Air search is up but most IJN fighters and strike aircraft are in SEAF right now.

Army South Seas dets are starting to arrive but I think I will use them in SEAF.

The LRCAP protecting the Tank Divs moved to follow the retreated allied units, so there were only a few Nicks to defend against the waves of bombers.
Orders corrected for tomorrow.
I’ll need to remember that little quirk for the next time the allies retreat!

LRCAP Tojos flew over the right hex today downing plenty of enemy fighters but not many bombers.
Air to air score was a 28-4 win. Ops losses were 5-7.
It looks like only 2x Tojo pilots KIA so the IJAAF should be able to keep this tempo up.
I will need to rotate a Tojo Sentai out soon to fill out the aircraft due to the ops losses.
