The Allies won the air war today setting some LRCAP Hurricanes in Bengal.

I’ve had a few days “operational pause” IRL but the ceasefire will end at 12:00Z tomorrow.
Lucky I kept this AAR so I can remind myself what was going on!

I got most of the way through preparing an image to show the current 4th Fleet defensive plan last weekend, so might finish that and post it on the weekend.

The most exciting news today is that oil has started to flow from Urumchi to Hankow!
The TK task force at Hankow is creating enough demand to get the oil flowing from Urumchi-Lanchow-Sian-Hankow.
This is the first time that Oil at Urumchi has dropped below 50k, so I will try to check each day to see if it moves every day or just once or a few times a week.

Tojo sweeps in Bengal do well, but then some Helens and Sallys lose their escorts and get shredded.

The next deliberate attack on the open ground outside Dacca is ordered for tomorrow.

A big IJA win here in the open country, exceeding expectations.
37th Div was zeroed
20th Bde was reduced to about 80
20th Div was reduced to about 100.
All 5 units retreated SW which is where this stack are moving next anyway. This win opens the way for this stack to clear the far bank of the river and allow 25th Army to link up and advance to Dacca.

Once Dacca is captured, the enemy situation will be reassessed, but an operation against Rangpur-Darjeeling (yellow) could cut off the allies at Tezpur.

Lots of allied movement arrows spotted, including some coming back east which could lead to another ambush opportunity, unless it is a fake move.

It's been a while since IGHQ saw a report from CAPT Fukami and the converted TK Fukko Maru.
He's now the task force commander, enjoying one more day of leave at Manila while the last TK finishes routine maintenance and they set sail for Soerabaja.
The Makassar Strait is densely packed with allied subs, so it is dangerous work.

It doesn't move every day, but will move often enough to get the oil out of Urumchi. I've got it down to <28k, and I'm about 5 months ahead in my game.

Now, how the he$$ do I get the fuel out?

He's not had enough time, at this stage of the war to completely 'flesh out' and/or train his units in India.

Well then turn the tables on him. If you know where they are, put in as many search and ASW assets as possible and go after him. Banzai!!!

I didn't remember to write the numbers down, but it looks like oil moves every 2 days.
I probably need to stack another TK task force there to keep demanding oil when the first task force moves.
I might send the oil by ship to Port Arthur which is stockpiling it, to avoid all the allied subs in the East China Sea.

I can't figure out how to draw the fuel either, unless I form task forces with all the spare xAK and xAP and home port them to China or something. I will probably put the fuel down as too much effort to worry about it.

I looked up 2LT V. Juni in the “top pilots” list.
27th Sentai, 73 exp, 172 missions, 1 kill.
I can’t say if he shot Mr Dunnigan down or not, but he survived a tangle with a P-38 in a Ki-45 so he earnt his pay today.

TBH, it was a rhetorical question. I figure it'll move toward the 'end game' when everything is falling appart.

126x George are set to sweep Auki tomorrow. Auki is an uninhabited allied dot hex one NE of Tulagi.
45x allied fighters are spotted at Tulagi with 175 more at Lunga.
The idea is to try and clear some allied fighters if they are set to CAP with a range setting greater than zero.

The allied 3rd Special Force stack is now in the 15th Tank Regt hex with IJA reinforcements still 4 days march away. It looks like I’ve missed out on trapping this allied stack by that close a margin.
15th Tank Regt is at full strength but that’s only 28 tanks defending a Jungle Rough hex. The allies will most likely attack tomorrow and push them backwards, opening an escape path to move further NW into a Mountain hex. The IJA 55th Div is in the hex to the west so if this allied stack does clear the 15th Tank Regt and moves there the 55th Div could destroy them.

Aircraft P1Y1 Frances advances R&D – to 7/43 +6/day. Only 16 days until it advances to 6/43 and will then start construction as that should be about the 2nd of June. These three research factories will all advance to research P1Y2. There are 161x G3M3 Nells in the pool with only 2x G3M3 units flying long range naval search patrols from Rangoon and Rabaul, so the size 30 G3M3 production factory will change to build P1Y1 on 1 Jun 43.
xAK Michael Goulandris is reported to have been sunk near Perth on Jun 06, 1942
12th Air Fleet arrives at Hakodate – VADM Totsuka is replaced as his air skill is less than 50. Web search for him shows that he had been in command of IJNAF air groups since 1936, so an air skill of only 33 seems a bit harsh. As for VADM Teraoka, with a naval skill less than 50 he won’t be entrusted to command a CV task force so he will see out this war in command of the 12th Air Fleet which will stay at Hakodate for now.

It should move now but slowly. As long as the fuel does not get wasted by going over the base capacity. If nothing else, turn off the refinery if you have the oil moving.

I've chosen not to produce this A/C, as it is an SR4. I'll have the next in the line by years' end. For myself, that'll do.

The pre-war plan was to not build it, and skip research ahead to P1Y2.
Mainly because it uses the Ha-45 engine.
Air Research Div staff didn’t prompt IGHQ to confirm the order so now the plane is so close to arrival I’ll build some.
From memory they lose some range from Nell and Betty but are a good bit faster.

Yep I locked this in a few months back when both fuel and oil were spilling onto the ground.
Fuel is still above capacity so is probably only reducing due to wastage rather than moving south.

Remember, you can dump a small load of oil at Fusan, set to stockpile oil, then move it by CS convoy to Japan. If you load two small tankers at the same time, maybe in different TFs if you have to do so, you will get oil moving to Fusan. Not a lot but every little bit helps. You can also move fuel from Fusan as well. If Port Arthur is set to stockpile both oil and fuel, then those have to come from some place else where there is an abundance. You can temporarily stockpile oil and fuel at other areas in China and Manchuria as well so the fuel is more likely to come from places farther away.

The allies abandon the hex one east of Dacca just before the deliberate attack punches thin air.
25th Army will now move as quickly as possible across the river and then advance on Dacca.

The George sweeps also punch thin air, but the allies sweep at the same time for about even losses.
Things just got interesting in SEAF!
Georges will sweep Tassafaronga tomorrow with more LRCAP Zeros and Georges set over Munda.

There are a few points of oil at Fusan already, but I don’t want to export fuel and oil from CMK yet as the CMK refineries and heavy industry need it.
If there is still some excess when the allies start to threaten the Tsushima Strait I’ll move the rest to Japan then.

So as not to crash the CMK Heavy Industry, if I stockpile fuel at all ports in the region that might create demand for fuel from Urumchi.
If some Heavy Industry starts to run short of fuel I’ll release the Port Arthur stockpile.

What is your defense plan for the Marshalls? Just curious, I know there are different schools of thought to how much to defend them with

This is the current situation in the Marshalls / Gilberts in 4th Fleet’s area of operations.
It's been a useful exercise to think through a few more details on how to try and delay the allies in this area.

HQ 4th Fleet is currently at Truk.

About 15 June (26 days away) the IJNAF AFUs get a TOE upgrade that gives them 12x 25mm AA guns and +15 support squads.
HQ 4th Fleet will conduct an inspection of all AFUs using a CL fast transport task force. VADM Inouye is still in command of 4th Fleet, but he is far too good an Air Admiral to leave in command of a numbered fleet. With 65 air skill and 55 naval skill he’d make a good CV task force commander.
HQ 6th Fleet is commanded by VADM Shimizu. He has 76 naval skill and leadership, inspiration and aggression in the 60s. He’s also wasted as a numbered fleet commander and would make a good surface combat task force commander. I might spend a few days of PP to change out those VADMs for landlubbers.

The South Seas Garrison (SSG) battalions will move to the locations shown by the arrows to help boost the assault value of each island.
They won’t be enough to defend against an allied Division assault, but they should still cause some damage and would protect against allied paras or rough up a Regt sized assault.

Stacking limits would allow an IJA Division to be added to the garrison of islands like Tabiteuea, Tarawa, Makin or Mili, but I’m reluctant to commit a Division so far forward. Due to the atoll terrain, an IJA Div in those locations would make a mess of an allied Division assault though.

Upcoming combat reinforcements for the 4th Fleet area will be limited to the following:
3rd and 4th SSG battalions arrive in 37 days.
1st to 6th South Seas dets arrive in Nov and Dec 43 with different AVs of 37, 67 or 94. I expect the allies to move on the Marshalls before then, so they might be used to bolster the defence of the Marianas.
1st Amphib Bde Tank Bn arrives in Nov and the plan is to move it to Saipan to reform the 1st Amphib Bde there. The 3rd Garrison Unit is already there waiting for it after being bought out of Manchukuo.

The 1st Air Fleet HQ arrives in 42 days. I will buy it out and move it to the Marianas, or forward to Truk, to place another torpedo depot in the region.

If I had some more ground forces I’d have built a level 2 airfield and put a garrison at Abemama as well, but I’ll leave the construction of that airfield to the allies.

The IJNAF will concentrate in the Marshalls from SEAF once invasion task forces are spotted.

Behind this “screen”, the IJA 40s Divisions will defend the SEAF area and the 70s Divisions will defend the Marianas, with Ind. Mixed Bdes in support. The Ind Mixed Bdes that eventually form the 100s Divisions will start filling in further back in the Philippines.

Current IJA "reserve" Divisions in SEAF include the 7th (Truk) 16th, 21st and 52nd (Manus Island).

Divisional assets are overkill that far forward in my experience. My personal preference is for the lighter IJA brigades, simply because they're much easier to move around (even by air, if required) to respond to Allied moves.

I think you have the balance right, however. Enough of a garrison that you make a mutli-regimental size assault required, not too much that it's overkill.

I'd not worry about Abemama, as that's too much like giving the Allies a level 2 airbase. If you can, I'd dig up Aillinglaplap. Can be a level 5 airbase, right in the heart of the Marshalls, an excellent backstop to Mili and good for mutual support from Roi & Kwaj.

Thanks MM. I’d overlooked Ailinglaplap.
With a bit of a reshuffle I could get it to size 2-3 airfield pretty quickly.
If the allies go straight for the Marshalls and bypass the Gilberts the troops in those southern bases could get a seat on a Marshall Airlines Mavis flight back to there.

The CV and CVL task forces are spotted on their way to Nauru, but the CVE, BB and CA task forces weren’t spotted. Looks like I’ve lost the element of surprise for a raid on Ndeni, but we will see if they can hide in thunderstorms for a few days in the Gilberts to lose the shadowing allied patrol aircraft.
Unescorted Sally and Helen are dealt with roughly in Bengal, but the details indicate that the allied fighters are all on area CAP based out of Rangpur, so they are on at least range 4 CAP which should be increasing their fatigue levels. IJAAF 3rd Air Army will stand down all bombers and focus on fighter ops with sweeps and LRCAP over the Army approaching Dacca for a few days.

Combined Fleet is unspotted at Nauru so will move SE.
Big George sweeps over Tulagi attract area CAP from Lunga, mostly Corsairs.
George and Corsair look about evenly matched with losses in the 20s for both sides.
I’ll wait a few days then sweep Tassafaronga next.

A Tojo sweep of Portland Roads from Port Moresby trades a few planes with 76 Sqn RAAF who are flying Kittyhawk IIIs.

Sweeps over Dacca find nothing so the Tojos will sweep Tezpur tomorrow.
IJA forces are moving to Dacca and Tezpur now.
The Chinese Corps has moved out of Tezpur to the NE into the 55th Div hex, I assume to try and let the 3rd Special Force stack march through.
With only 8k allied defenders at Tezpur this has prompted me to order an attack from three sides with 5x Divs, with 4x Divs moving forward to reinforce and consolidate if Tezpur can be captured. I’d like to trap that big Chinese Corps and remove it from the board.

Night Air attack on Comilla , at 56,39 – I’m trying to watch the combat replays closely here to see if I can spot any difference between the Nick A compared to the Nick C.
Generally, the bombers fire first and keep firing, then usually drive the Nicks away with defensive fire before the Nicks get an opportunity to fire. Every now and then a Nick does fire, but not very often. Even less often they get the “bomber damaged” message, but there will be a few Wellingtons returning to base with holes in them.
AA isn’t firing as supply is a bit low at Comilla, but a resupply convoy is moving forward to rectify that. It will be covered by the surface combat task forces that have been undetected at Akyab now for weeks, and I’ll set LRCAP over the convoy once it is making its final approach. Hopefully the supply gets unloaded before allied bombers spot them and attack, but it will create an opportunity to shoot some more allied bombers down.

The only problem is that his time in captivity seems to have reduced his experience level massively, as he now has 52 experience points. He will be moved to a 2nd line fighter unit in Burma to be given time to rebuild his experience level flying local CAP.

It only took 1hr 19mins for the turn to come back, but I won’t be able to run the turn for a few hours.
My bet is that it will be a fairly quiet one.

Tojo sweeps do well over Tezpur, shooting down 24 allied fighters (+3 ops losses) for 2 Tojos (+1 ops loss).
The sum included 20x P40K, 3x P38G, 2xP66 and 2xP40E.

Iwaki expands airfield to size 6
Genzan expands fortifications to size 4
Tsiaotso expands airfield to size 1 – lots of bases captured by the IJA in China have airfields that are worth 20 VP per airfield point, so I will build some more of them to size 3 or 4 as that doesn’t cost much in supply but will add 60-80 VP per base which could help keep the score above 3:1 ratio come 1 Jan 1944.
Chiba expands fortifications to size 3
Ace pilot Sonokawa L. of 64th Sentai is promoted to 1LT
