A 5:1 win for the IJA just NE of Dacca. 1st Div took about 100 squads disabled but the rest are in good shape.
The defenders withdrew to Dacca so won’t escape before 25th Army moves in.

Assault river crossing with HQ CEA and 2x Divs will hit Tezpur tomorrow, but there might be high forts so it could be bloody.
3x Tank Regts will also enter the hex from the east in Reserve (no pursuit) mode.

Lots of fake IJA movement shown by the ticks in this image, with the actual moves shown by the red arrows.
The assault river crossing into Tezpur is risky but if it succeeds there will be a chance to trap the big Chinese Corps and the 3rd SF stack.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, KB does a “crazy Ivan” after being spotted heading SE for the last few days.
Alarms are probably going off in Fiji and at Pago Pago based on the past track. The dotted track might be what the allies are expecting.

10 hex max search radius for Jill shown in yellow.
Unlikely that there will be any allied shipping left in this area now that there have been a few hints of the KB and it was spotted today, but the IJN could get lucky.
The next patrol location was selected to try and keep the Jills away from the big USMC airfields.
Ndeni has 71 fighters, 47 bombers and 40 auxiliaries.
No recon over Luganville or Efate.

This is the current situation in Bengal, from left to right:

HQ CEA (India Expeditionary Army), GEN Hata

2nd Area Army, GEN Shimomura
1st Army: 3x Tank Divs with 1st Div attached.
11th Army: no Divs with it at the moment, but it is moving to support the Dacca attack so will take over 27th and 35th Divs when it arrives.
12th Army: will join 3rd and 4th Divs who are advancing NE to clear the near bank of the Brahmaputra River.
13th Army: will move to join the 6th, 8th and 9th Divs who will conduct an assault river crossing to try and cut off one withdrawal route from Dacca. This operation might be cancelled if the allies reinforce that hex, but there are currently only 3k enemy troops there.
25th Army: 2nd Guards Div, 5th Div, 18th Div, 27th Div, 35th Div and 5x Tank Regts. The Meghna River was crossed without incident and they should be in Dacca in about 3 days. Still moving to reinforce is the 20th Div.

33rd Div is split in thirds and is guarding the Arakan coast at Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Akyab, having taken over from 5th Div. Burma Area Army (GEN Kimura) will take over command of garrison troops to allow the expeditionary forces to concentrate on the advance. Burma Area Army also has the 57th, 58th, 59th and 30th(-), 31st, 32nd, 37th and 39th Divs under command to protect against an allied move against the south Burma coast.

Korea Army (aka Bengal Army), GEN Itagaki
2nd Army has 10th, 13th and 17th Divs in a defensive position to anchor this sector while other Divs move around them.
15th Army is with 53rd and 56th Divs.
20th Army: The 19th Div, 21st IM Bde and 41st Infantry Regt are now moving to join the 55th Div blocking position. They should arrive before the 3rd Special Force stack due to terrain. 55th Div still hasn’t recombined as 144th Regt is still under command 4th Fleet, but the extra reinforcements should make this Jungle Rough hex a fortress. I doubt the allies will attack though, they are most likely just trying to escape through the jungle.
23rd Army: LGEN Sakai is still annoyed that IGHQ didn’t let him attack the 3rd Special Force until 1 day too late. He has the 11th and 51st Divs plus 3x Tank Regts under command, but the 4th Tank Regt only has light tanks

15th Div is still recovering but will move to Dimapur then on to Tezpur.
36th Div is moving to reinforce the Tezpur front.
54th Div is still recovering but is on the move towards Tezpur.
12th and 34th Divs are also moving to join the Tezpur stack.

The 20s Divs are the future Malaya/Sumatra garrison while the 30s Divs are the future Thailand garrison.
The 50s Divs are the future Burma garrison, but for now many of these Divs will be used as reserves to support the 1s and 10s Divs to try and capture some victory points.

Big 8:1 win at Tezpur which was better than expected.
Tezpur will be quickly reinforced to allow most of this stack to push on, leaving the allied 3rd Special Force stack and 54th Chinese Corps with long marches through the jungle if they want to rejoin friendly lines.
The next objective in this sector is Darjeeling to try and cut off those retreating troops, then Rangpur.

5th Chinese Corps identified in the Jungle Rough outside Tezpur, and it's a big one despite still only being about 70% of its potential strength.
54th Chinese Corps must be further back re-building again into another monster.
The 3rd Special Force stack is still moving into this hex from the east.
The allies might be resupplying these units from the air, so some Nicks on LRCAP will be set overhead to try and shoot some transports down.

The allies are doing a good job here of withdrawing damaged units to allow them some time to recover.
Apart from the Chinese units which have practically bottomless pools for infantry squads, the Brit and Indian infantry squads shouldn't be able to keep replacing the sorts of losses they've been suffering.

New allied movement arrows spotted this turn are shown in white.

Pilot Wanatabe, H. is reported as to have escaped capture – PO1 from 201 Ku S-1, 292 missions and 1 kill. His experience has been reduced to 47. To fly with 201 Ku S-1 he would have had 70+ experience before being shot down, so that is a reduction of about 30 experience points. He will return to Japan and join a training unit to get his experience back up.

Deliberate attack ordered at Dacca, with more troops including 2nd Tank Div due to arrive overnight in Reserve (no pursuit) mode.
Half of the allied stack should still be hurting from a few days ago and are most likely the units moving NW to try and escape.

I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. IIRC I said something about getting the IJA 'Panzer Corps' through the gaps to cut him off.

True, but not too much in heavy weapons, experience, and moral. More points for you.

Brit and Indian infantry squads shouldn't be able to keep replacing the sorts of losses they've been suffering.

Be careful of the Yanks, I see a number of 'green' LCU on the map. If your opponent has been paying attention he's been shipping these to India from day one.

Ah, without HR's WitP-AE becomes the Battle of India. And guess what? You win. The only way IMHO Japan may do so, at least against equal opponents.

I’d call it “air parity” still.
Allied heavy bombers have been quiet recently which means they are overdue to flatten an airfield of their choosing.
Until then the Tojos will keep sweeping like poor kids in 1800s London.

Easier said than done Rusty, the allies haven't left many gaps yet and the terrain in this area works against tanks.
Once the IJA cross the Brahmaputra River it should be a different story.
HQ 1st (Tank) Army is going to try and keep up with the 3x Tank Divs. Once Dacca is captured it will swing north in an attempt to encircle Rangpur and block the withdrawal of all troops east of it.

quote:

True, but not too much in heavy weapons, experience, and moral. More points for you.

The 5th and 54th Chinese Corps are "Americanised" so get better support weapons than the bog standard Chinese "warlord" Corps.
While the 5th Chinese Corps has 500+ AV, it should still be relatively low experience.

quote:

Be careful of the Yanks, I see a number of 'green' LCU on the map. If your opponent has been paying attention he's been shipping these to India from day one.

There are Seppos everywhere. I've already spotted at least 2x Divs being the 37th US and 40th US from memory... Going by the troop and unit counts under those "US green" symbols there are more Divs in this area, plus their relatively high firepower Arty, Armour and AT units.
This is one of the main reasons the IJA tanks are not pushing ahead of infantry support, or they will be at risk of being cut off and surrounded themselves.
The IJA supply situation is also tenuous, which is to be expected. That's why the Generals are risking some Toho class xAK to dump supply directly at Chittagong. There is no detection on any of the IJN ships on the Arakan coast, so that supply run is a calculated risk that should pay off. The RAF Air Marshals are probably a bit shy of sending more DBs to their slaughter.

With lots of US troops in India and a front line that is about to get a lot longer, the game is still interesting and my esteemed opponent is well and truly up for the fight. He is not giving any ground up cheaply.
After this game, I would like to play a "no HR" Scenario 1 game as the allies, just to see if I could do any better than CrackSabbath is doing here.
If I play another game as Japan one day, I would probably play with PDU off and just the one HR about paying PP to cross borders.
Not because there is anything wrong with playing no HR, but those couple of changes would make for a completely different game.

Meanwhile in NEAF, LCDR Ishii and crew are just managing to keep DD Hibiki afloat and moving towards Adak.
If they can make it to Adak they will pump out the minor float damage and then edge their way west.
Only 4 hexes to go to Adak...

There are enough 70+ experience IJNAF fighter pilots to send another fighter unit to the front lines.
Now that the CV air groups are back on the CVs, there is a shortage of land based fighters in SEAF so this unit will help.
It will island hop south to avoid being sunk by USN subs, but hops will only occur if the weather is decent.
I've noticed that heavy rain and storms at the destination almost guarantees an ops loss.

Some of the defensive skills are lower than the Inspector General of Navy Aviation would like, but this unit will upgrade to George-1 when it gets to Truk and strafe training will continue until they are needed at the front.

A question about your supply convoys. Why not have the escorts form a Fast Transport TF to load supply, then add them to the supply convoy? Those large Ansyu-C PBs can carry 1k supply each . . .

I run Ansyu PBs as dedicated fast transport TF sometimes, but when the PB is escorting xAK I don’t load them up with supply.
If this task force is sunk I’d rather not lose another few k of supply with them.

I also assume that the ASW ability of PB loaded up with supply will be even worse than if their decks are clear.

As far as I can tell, it does not matter if the PB is loaded or not as to the ASW effectiveness.

But if every cargo TF as done that way, you might save fuel since you would probably not have to run as many TFs.

The loading of a Fast Transport TF then including them in an invasion TF works as well.

Dacca attack gets a 2.9:1 result and drops forts to 4. The IJA stack is in supply but fatigue is a bit high. More units are moving in so they may attack again to try and score a big win before some defenders escape.

51st Div and the 4th (Light) Tank Regt shock across the river NW of Tezpur into heavy opposition and are almost completely disabled.
They got a few miles ahead of other troops who will cross tomorrow.
I expect the allies to attack tomorrow, but they will be in for a surprise if they do.

A big George sweep of Tulagi punches thin air. Similar with Tojo sweeps in Bengal.

Day 2 attack at Dacca gets 4:1 and drops forts to 3. One more attack should do it.
No rest allowed or some defenders will escape.

Two more IJA Divs and support troops cross the river NW of Tezpur but they trigger another shock attack which was not planned.
Another IJA Div is disabled but the elite 11th Div does well and is still in top shape. The allies take about even losses and only bombard, which shows the post battle damage. I’ll post images later.
IJA reinforcements are moving forward but allied movement shows withdrawals, so the advance will continue.

Dacca captured with a big win. Resources and Light Industry are at 20(20) each which will help a little bit.
Level 8(9) airfield will also help once HQ 3rd Air Army moves forward from Magwe.

23rd Indian Div and Gardner’s Horse are smashed in the centre of the front clearing the near bank of the Brahmaputra River.

In the Tezpur sector GEN Hata moves forward to inspect the front line where 11th and 53rd Divs relieve the shattered troops.
12th, 14th and 15th Divs are moving to reinforce and continue the attack.

More troops are also moving to encircle the 5th Chinese Corps and 3rd SF stack.

The win at Dacca opens up a few options.
Thanks to Christmas there will be an operational pause until Boxing Day in Arizona, so that gives me a few days to come up with a cunning plan.
Most likely next move is to threaten Calcutta with movement arrows but move the 1st (Tank) Army in an attempt to encircle Rangpur.
More supply is needed and is moving north on multiple task forces towards Chittagong.
The anticipated allied reaction to spotting Japanese merchants unloading supply didn’t occur, but if it is delayed there is a swarm of Tojos, Oscars and Nicks waiting for them.

Once the supply situation stabilises a bit the Raiding Regts will move forward to Dacca and start looking for targets of opportunity deeper into India just to keep the allies guessing.
Lahat expands fortifications to size 1 – this is in the Jungle two hexes west of Palembang. More IJA ground forces will need to be moved to Sumatra and Java shortly to provide some protection against an allied move towards the vital oilfields. HQ 25th Army with a few 20s Divs are pencilled in as the future Sumatra garrison, so some of that force could start to be withdrawn once the Rangpur operation finishes.

LCDR Ishii disbands DD Hibiki in the 5(5) port at Adak Island and the crew get to work on emergency repairs.
10 points of flooding are pumped out overnight.
Detection level on Adak is zero so the crew will get system damage below 50 then move to Amchitka Island for further emergency repairs.

LGEN Naoji Sakai is currently the commander of 15th Div.
He is 31st on the list of LGEN Div Commanders when sorted by Land skill. His Leadership and Inspiration ratings are also mediocre.
He is ordered to return to Japan and is placed on the General Staff Reserve list.

For role playing purposes IGHQ only assign LGENs to be Div Commanders and MGENs to command Independent Bdes.
COLs are ignored for command of Divs and Bdes as they should be Regt commanders.
The top LGENs are shown above. One thing that Japan doesn’t have a shortage of is good quality Div and Bde commanders.
To be selected to command a Division in this war, all of Leadership, Inspiration and Aggression skills should be 60+.
Admin skill >50 is a nice to have, but <50 Admin skill is not a career killer.

LGEN Inoue has a poor (<50) leadership rating so he will most likely stay on the bench for the rest of the war.

LGEN Hitomi has been selected to take over command of 15th Div, but IGHQ staff just noticed that he has a 54 “Air” skill so he is also on the shortlist to command an Air HQ. IGHQ staff will check the Air Generals next, as with his very high Land and Aggression skills he is best suited to command an Armoured or Infantry Division. Historically he was promoted to LGEN on 29 Oct 43 and took command of 12th Div. LGEN Kasahara is currently commanding 12th Div with a 75 Land skill so he won’t be changed. The staff checked whether LGEN Hitomi can command an Air HQ, but as a land unit commander he is not eligible to command an Air HQ . The IGHQ CofS signs the posting order and he becomes the new commander of 15th Infantry Div.

LGEN Kayashima is next in line after LGEN Hitomi to be selected for command of an active Division. LGEN Kayashima has been ordered to prepare to deploy south but a command hasn’t yet been confirmed. Historically he was commander of 6th Depot Div from 1941, then 46th Div in 1943, retiring shortly after. Recalled to duty 15 Oct 1943 to take command of 6th Depot Div again before retiring again in 1945.

16 enemy units are in the hex one NW of Dacca.
15 enemy units were involved in the last day of the Battle of Dacca, with 3 destroyed and 12 forced to retreat into this hex.
That means there are 4 fresh units across the river. Likely one of them is an Infantry Division and judging by the # of AFVs and previous allied tactics there will be one Armd Bde or Regt with it, plus supporting Arty and/or AA.

Based on the Dacca combat report, the retreating force should be about 13k troops, 30 guns and about 180 vehicles.
That leaves about 25k troops, 500+ guns and about 600 fresh vehicles.
An assault river crossing against 800-1000 of fresh AV is required but that would open up the route shown by the thick red arrows, with the objectives of cutting the railways at the yellow crosses.

2nd Area Army will conduct this operation with 2-3x Infantry Divs to hold the ground at each yellow cross to block counter attacks, while 1st (Tank Army) pushes forward to surround Rangpur.

Korea Army will continue to advance on the right flank towards Darjeeling before moving on Rangpur.

12th Army with 3rd, 4th and 6th Divs (plus Mdm Arty and AT guns in support) will attack the 8k allied stack in the centre of the line to try and block allied moves from near Rangpur slowing down the 1st (Tank) Army. 8th and 9th Divs will stay on the east bank of the river to keep their supply route open.

The plan is to try and pocket the ~200k enemy troops around Rangpur, but there are another 200k troops spotted around Calcutta that might try to rescue them. There is no recon further into India at this point, but from previous recon around Jamshedpur there are some troops in depth protecting against parachute drops.

Once Rangpur is captured, the next IJA move will be towards the large Resources and Industrial areas at Asansol and Jamshedpur.

Frank research is starting to speed up now.

The current 2x60 + 1x30 Tojo factories and 1x60 Oscar factory will keep producing to build up a big pool of fighters for the late war.
Tojo IIc and Oscar IIb are the current production models, with most front line units flying Tojos but a couple of units in each theatre still flying Oscars.

I prepared pre-war estimates for how many aircraft needed each month including estimates to replace combat losses. The estimate at May 1943 was a need for about 200 IJA fighters/month. That increases slightly to about 220 fighters/month by late 1943 then jumps to about 300/month in 1944 then 400+/month in 1945.

That might see a bit of over-production on Tojos and Oscars in the short term, but I expect those aircraft pools will start to be used up once the war gets closer to the Home Islands.

Lt Generals would command Corp level units, Major Generals would command Divisions and possibly Corp level units. Colonels and Brigadiers would command Brigades although a Brigadier General might also command a Division. One problem that you might have with this is that the game shows the final rank of the officer for these officers, this is as far my understanding anyway. Switch that to the sea and you will see why some Admirals are commanding ships in the beginning of the game.

51st Div and the 4th (Light) Tank Regt shock across the river NW of Tezpur into heavy opposition and are almost completely disabled.
They got a few miles ahead of other troops who will cross tomorrow.

If you are unaware you could 'set all units to follow' (lower right) after the last units' move is entered. This will insure all units arrive at the same time and avoid this issue.

Yep aware of the follow command, but the troops move slower.
Using that command to get the 2nd Area Army across the river from Dacca as one big stack and they are only moving 4 miles per day in combat mode.

The IJA didn't have Brigadiers so they generally used COLs to command Regts and MGENs to command Bdes.
As a result they have a large number of LGENs, as they used them to command Divisions and Armies (US/Brit/Aus equivalent of a Corps).
Full GENs usually commanded the Area Armies and drove desks back in Japan.

The IJA must have had a long LGEN seniority list to keep track of the "junior" LGENs who were Div commanders and the "senior" LGENs who would be considered for Army (Corps) command.

A bit of trivia, the Brits (and Aussies) stopped calling their Brigadiers "Generals" in 1922.
