Details from the big attack today.
Allied figures are from:
1. Start of battle
2. End of first bombardment phase
3. End of deliberate attack phase
4. End of second bombardment phase, 2 to 1 odds announced!

29th British Bde didn’t retreat.

Quick check of the Int screen from yesterday and this ground battle scored 164 points in additional allied LCU losses.
255th Armd Bde was finally zeroed, but it shattered the IJA 9th Tank Regt on the way out.
IJ Army loss points only went up by 11 for the day.

On the left of the front, III Indian Corps withdrew to join XV Indian Corps just as IJA 12th Army arrived.

All but the 29th British Div withdrew west into Rangpur. There are now 23 units spotted there, so 9 of them are fresh and the 14 that retreated.
Rangpur is not going to be easy to capture, but most Divs and HQs in this sector have been preparing for it

The least damaged 4x Infantry Divs plus 2x Tank Regts will attack again tomorrow to clear the 29th British Bde. With any luck it will surrender.
The other 4x Divs and 2 x Tank Regts are in Reserve (no pursuit) mode to start trying to recover some fatigue and disruption.
12th and 15th Divs will be used as rear/flank protection until they recover to 300+ AV.

54th Div, 3rd and 9th Tank Regts will withdraw to Tezpur to recover.
9th Tank Regt was shattered and only cost 9xPP to buy out, so that was done.
3rd Tank Regt would cost 55 so is about half price, but that will have to wait as the priority is to buy out the rest of the 47th Div to 18th Army.

I noticed recently that the Kongo Maru class xAP have a cruise speed of 20 knots, allowing them to cover an impressive 12 hexes a day in cruise mode, but only if they don’t have an escort to slow them down.

I recall a comment from Alfred once that some Allied merchants are fast enough to run the Cape Town to Perth route without escort, so is 20 knots fast enough to let the Kongo Marus travel without Escorts?

Gato/Balao/Tench class subs have a max speed of 20. Salmon/Sargo/Seadragon are fastest with 21.
The subs would have to be lucky to get into a firing position against a ship moving 20 knots past them in a 46 mile hex, but I've only seen that message in combat reports when an Allied sub made contact with a Japanese MGB near Balikpapan.

Fast enough for what?

I've seen subs hitting the fastest ships in the game so no matter where google search boy got that comment from, it's not correct. Except subs, everything else from a DD upwards could and would engage too.

I'm using those fast xAPs in unescorted roles as the Allied but then usually only on routes that have less than minimal chances to meet a sub. The route to Perth sure isn't one where I wouldn't expect enemy subs. As the Japanese, which route would you expect to have no subs? Using these transports unescorted can only be an emergency measure IMO.

I've tried it, but it just seemed in my AI games that any merchies that were sans escort were fish bait. So I stopped.

Just in case you don't know these vessels are 'gas guzzlers'. I know you don't have much else at the time, but you should start to get a number of 'E' clase ships soon. Substitute these in as you can to save some 'fleet juice'.

You are really starting to become Japanese. You're complicating the Hell out of this operation. Taking oil from here and there, stockpiling, etc.

OK, I'm in '43 Oct, and I have the oil at Urumchi under 24k. So far I've only pulled it from Hankow. I use 8 2850 capacity tankers and four at a time pull it to Shanghai, were it picks up escorts (2 SC's). From there to HI. These tankers convert from some small ak's.

As far as stockpiling fuel at Port Arthur, I'm not sure. I think this local feeds the HI in Manchukuo, to be one the safe side keep an eye on this as I'm not sure if it'll draw fuel all the way from China.

Uh oh, gotta go, 'Hogan's Heros' just came on.

I'm not game to try it for that reason, just checking I wasn't missing out on that 12 hex/day movement!

Yes, over-complication required as there is still 50k Oil at Urumchi.
I'm trying multiple things at once to try and prime the pump. Once it starts moving I might be able to focus on Hankow.
I was using some Std-A and Std-B Tankers on CS but they weren't filling up. Switching to manual control should help, plus some Std-C TK are moving there to replace the larger Tankers.
Cheers

Remnants of the 29th British Bde surrender to the IJA 15th Army.
Allied bombers didn't fly which lets the 2nd Area Army stack recover a little bit of fatigue and disruption.
Fairly quiet elsewhere.

George-2 research got to 90% with 5x30 factories on research with engine bonus, so it will get to 100% tomorrow.
George-2 production will start on 12 June. 3x30 factories started George-5 research yesterday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Taihoku at 88,62
SC Ch 9 – now has experience levels of 46 day, 55 night so the crew are no longer afraid of the dark! LT Fujito in command has a Naval skill of 41, Aggression 57. As far as the IJN LT list goes he is one of the better ones.
Allied Ships
SS Guardfish, hits 1 – the combat report said this was a good hit to the control room which sprung some leaks. This is a deep water hex one off Taihoku, so positive signs that IJN ASW is starting to be a little less useless.

SS O21 is located by SC Ch 26
O21 bottoming out .... second contact in a row, it’s frustrating when opportunities like this are missed in shallow water hexes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 60,35 (near Tezpur)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 13822 troops, 165 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 1113
Defending force 30262 troops, 350 guns, 180 vehicles, Assault Value = 1182
Japanese ground losses:
14 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Allied ground losses:
14 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Assaulting units:
19th Division – will follow the enemy stack once it moves east into the IJA 34th Div blocking position
55th Engineer Regiment – 55th Div will move to Tezpur once the 3rd Special Force stacks move east out of this hex. It will probably move to the Arakan coast to allow 33rd Div to recombine and move south as a mobile reserve Division.
55th Cavalry Regiment
55th Mountain Gun Regiment
112th Infantry Regiment
143rd Infantry Regiment
144th Infantry Regiment
15th Tank Regiment – a small Tank Regt that just opened the hexside from Tezpur. It will move back to Tezpur and then towards the front where it will be used as a recon unit and be kept out of the big battle stacks.
21st Ind.Mixed Brigade – will move to Tezpur then Chittagong by rail, to move south to help garrison Sumatra.
41st Infantry Regiment – the orphan of 30th Div, will also move to Chittagong then south to join the rest of 30th Div at Bangkok.
20th Army – will follow 19th Div to command the upcoming battles to capture the 3rd SF stack, so long as 34th Div can block it in the Jungle Rough.
Defending units: All of these units still have relatively high Assault Values, so they will be worked on from the air and will not be attacked until the ones that are moving have moved east. The IJA have committed 3x IJA Divisions to destroying this stack but it will take a bit of time. The 5th Chinese Corps is the main unit that IGHQ want to destroy as it is currently a 500 AV beast, with potential to become a 700+ AV monster. It would also be good to remove the parachute capable Chindits from the board, even if they could be bought back. The British Indian Army should have to start prioritising which units it buys back and fills out, especially with Infantry and Artillery.
111th Chindit Brigade
75th Indian Brigade

Defending force 383 troops, 4 guns, 14 vehicles, Assault Value = 1
Japanese adjusted assault: 1084
Allied adjusted defense: 1
Japanese assault odds: 1084 to 1

Guns lost 4 (4 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 20 (20 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Assaulting units:
All units will advance into the clear terrain hex between Rangpur and Darjeeling, which will allow Rangpur to be entered without an assault river crossing. A battlegroup based on 15th Division will remain as hex guard in this hex, with some extra Artillery attached.
HQ 2nd Army (LGEN Shichida), the fresh (448 AV) and elite (90 exp) IJA 10th Division (LGEN Sogawa) and 1x Mtn Gun Regt are moving into this hex from the SW to reinforce, but are some days away.

This is the plan in Bengal for the next month or so.

2nd Area Army are setting up blocking positions along the Ganges River but are feinting to advance to the NW. The aim of this is to keep the Allied forces at Calcutta, or if they do move, keep them focussed on defending the size 9 airfield at Asansol.
25th Army is moving to Chittagong and all subordinate units are preparing for a landing at Vizagapatnam. This is a feint to try and get some Allied forces to move West from Calcutta to defend that part of the Indian coast. Shipping that drops off supply at Chittagong will start extracting 25th Army units to the Sumatra/Malaya area to form a reserve that will also be a credible threat to Vizagapatnam. The Viz operation probably won’t be launched due to the risks it would pose to shipping.

There is a risk that the Allies try to concentrate a superior force and advance from Calcutta to attack one of the 11th, 12th or 13th Army stacks, but 25th Army will keep some forces at Dacca to help counter that threat.

1st (Tank) Army will move as quickly as possibly to try and cut off railroad junctions and encircle Rangpur.

Korea Army, with 2nd and 15th Armies, will advance into Rangpur from the NE.
20th Army will work to capture cutoff Allied forces in the 34th Div hex.
23rd Army is the Theatre Reserve, working to help repair disabled Divisions at Tezpur. 51st, 54th and 56th Divs are currently in a large hospital and R&R camp complex there. As they recover they will be spread out to provide rear area protection against Allied para drops as they continue to recover, especially along the railway lines.

Ah, that's the rub. I stopped using CS convoys long ago, for that reason, and the fact that I can't control where the convoy refuels. No convoy of mine is going to refuel in the HI. Unless its warships, or Hokkaido to Honshu, or some such.

Alfred weighed in on this in one of Lowpe's AARs a short time ago. A CS convoy will always fully refuel at its home base, regardless of fuel settings. So setting it to Do Not Refuel or Minimal Refuel will keep it from refueling at its destination if it doesn't need extra fuel to get back to home base.

This is the Allied stack that 20th Army have been ordered to destroy.
36th Div is moving to join 34th Div but is still about 5-6 days from joining that hex.
The Allies have been moving now for quite a while so will probably move within the next few days.

OK, but I prefer my cargo convoys fuel at the 'tactical' level, there and back plus a few more. This way when they are sunk I don't waste too much fuel. If I were the Allies I wouldn't care.

Doesn't matter about the tactical setting - it will still fully refuel at home port if I understood Alfred's post correctly.

I'm in the habit of running the Singapore-Fukuoka Fuel and Oil convoys manually, mainly so I can set waypoints around the Allied subs in the East China Sea.
I also pause the convoys for a few days at either Singapore or Sasebo and disband individual ships to get rid of all damage points.
Probably unnecessary mouse clicks in the big scheme of things, but I don't like the idea of sending ships on that convoy route that aren't in top condition.

Most of the other standing convoy routes are running as CS/Auto with no issues.

This shows the out and back routes that the big Oil and Fuel convoys are using.
Three of them are very close to home.

The Allied sub main highway is also shown. There used to be a lot more Allied subs just off Sasebo, but they were well spotted for months and the convoys avoided them. More subs have recently been showing up in the Formosa Strait and in the gaps around Okinawa and Amami Oshima.

ASW attack near Chittagong at 55,41
DD Tachikaze – this is a 3xDD Minekaze class ASW Div that has been detached from CL Div 2.
The Minekaze class still only have the Type 95 depth charge so can only be expected to get hits in shallow water hexes. They don’t get the Type 2 DC until their 4/44 upgrade, but they get a surface search radar at the same time. The trick will be keeping them afloat until 4/44!

A CS convoy will always fully refuel at its home base, regardless of fuel settings.

I don't care where they fuel, I don't use them because I can't control where they refuel. No CS convoys on my board. Now as I've also said if I were the Allies I'd probably use them because I don't care where they refuel.

Allied bombers hit the 11th Army stack after a few days of rest.
The total score in the air for the day was 70-something to 20-something in favour of Japan.
Very few Tojo pilots lost, I don’t think any KIA and only about 4x WIA. Lots of Tojo pilot experience gains.
Nicks lost a few pilots KIA and a few WIA.

Ailinglaplap expands airfield to size 1 – Yokosuka 5th SNLF; 5th and 111th Naval Construction Bns and the Kwajalein Base Force are the current garrison. The Port is 82% to size 1(0). Airfield will be built up to 3 or 4, depending when the Allies attack and start to interfere. Once the Port is size 1, fortifications will start to be built too.
Kona expands airfield to size 5
Molokai expands port to size 2
Georgetown expands fortifications to size 4
Makin expands airfield to size 3 – stopped, forts are at level 5 so will now continue to 6. Makin has 139 assault value on the atoll in 1x Naval Guard and the 2x Yokosuka SNLF Para units, so could cause some damage to an amphibious landing force.
Changsha expands fortifications to size 5
Aircraft N1K2-J George advances R&D – production starts! 8x size 30 research factories are on George-5 now, but no engine bonus as the Mitsubishi Ha-43 engine is still being researched by 3x30 factories. The Ha-43 is currently due 6/44, so advancing about 90% per month should see it start production in about Jan 44. George-5 is currently due 10/45 so that will advancing one month every 12.5 days before engine bonus kicks in. There is 28 months left until it arrives, so George-5 should start production in about 9-10 months time. There won’t be much time (if any) for the Hq-43 engine pool to get above 500 and help the George-5 research.
Aircraft A6M8 Zero advances R&D – to 3/44, with 6x size 30 factories so +12/day with engine bonus. A6M8 advances one month every 8.33 days, so it should start production in mid-Aug 1943. There are also 8x size 30 research factories on the A7M2 Sam (due 9/45) but the best four of them that have been repairing since day 1 of the war are still only at 18,17,16,9 repaired. The later four are at 6,6,5,4. A6M8 will see quite a bit of service before the A7M2 is available.
Ace pilot Ginowa I. of 1st Sentai is promoted to 2LT
Previous report of sinking of DD Aulick incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service
xAK Trento is reported to have been sunk near Sagigik Island on Jul 19, 1942

There were 2x60 and 2x30 production factories on George-1 so they immediately switch to George-2 and start producing 6/day.

Lots of action in the sub war. The Allies miss a few big IJ merchants.
Mostly quiet on the Western Front, no Allied aircraft spotted after the losses they took yesterday.
IJA tanks are moving fast to try and encircle Rangpur with HQs, Infantry and all forms of guns moving as quickly as they can to back them up.
The first six George-2 roll off the production line.
2x PB4Y recon planes are taken out by flak in SEAF. The Allies must be flying them too low.

Can CAP intercept recce planes in game?
I’ve split a George group at Truk into thirds and assigned it to CAP at different altitudes to see if they can do it, but the radar operators can’t tell me what altitude the recce planes are coming in at.

Allied Ships
SS Puffer, hits 2
SS Puffer is located by SC CHa-33 – starting to see quite regularly that one SC will spot the sub and a different SC will attack. I’ve also noticed that it is very risky to send a single SC or DD task force to move between ports as they don’t have the benefit of Div mates to help search for enemy subs. I’ve read elsewhere that ASW Divs with 3 ships is the most efficient use for them, but I still have some 4 ship ASW Divs just to keep ships with similar names (numbers) together.

64th Field AA Battalion arrives at Tokyo – 8th Area Army, will move to Gasmata to try and shoot down some of the Allied recon visitors.
78th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – I’m using the Naval Guards in the IJN Fleet that start with their first number, but there is no IJN 7th Fleet in the game. From memory, the 7th Fleet was a short lived Fleet and the name for the Tsushima Straits patrol force. 78th Naval Guard will move to Truk to boost the garrison there and go some way to replacing the 7th IJA Division which will move back to Reserve in Japan shortly.
90th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Takamatsu – will move to 9th Fleet area at Babeldoab but it has to walk to Okayama train station before getting the express to Tokyo. 91st Naval Guard is currently at Sorong but the future plan is to handover responsibility for the defence of Sorong to the Army and move the 91st NG to Peleliu. HQ 9th Fleet will move to Babeldoab after it arrives on 19 Nov 43.

Lt Ishizu will need to change his career goal of commanding a Destroyer one day to something different.

Yes, CAP can shoot recon aircraft down. They usually fly very high. But are you sure that those PBYs are flying recon and not Naval Search at 6k feet while eating the copilots cookies that his mother sent him?

Good to know, cheers Joe.

They were the recon model so I assume that they are flying at their max altitude, or close to.
The Int Staff (via the in game database) puts their max altitude at 24k’ which is pretty low really.
I’m away from the game but I’ll check what size guns the AA Regt at Truk has, assuming it was over Truk...
I will need to watch the replay again and check where they were shot down.

Wife’s grandfather flew Sptifires for 152 Sqn RAF and he gets a mention in a book about sharing the first Sptifire Mk VIII victory in India.
He and his wingman were scrambled on a “high flying anti recce” sortie and shot down a Dinah. From memory that was late Dec 43.
Apparently within weeks of the Mk VIII arriving in Bengal the IJAAF ran out of Dinahs and without the daily recon reports were blinded from that point on.

In this game, the Allies have been flying long range recon flights over Truk, Ponape, Kusaie, Manus et al, that would be good to intercept.

This is a snippet from "Sptifire Aces of Burma and the Pacific" that was freely available on the interweb.

76th I.F.Chutai/A – I may have discovered what not to do the hard way here. I withdrew each fraction individually. This unit was meant to return the next day but it hasn’t yet. It eventually renames and upsizes to become the 10th Sentai, so I hope I haven’t stuffed that up by not withdrawing these fractions as a single unit.

SC CHa-60 arrives at Tokuyama – will move to Tokyo to help escort a convoy south then stay in 6th Fleet area.

This is just to show the status of the Divisions recovering at Tezpur.
All Divisions and Tank Regts on this list are in rest mode, with each recovering a few assault value points per day.
They will take at least a few months to recover back to the point of being committed forward again.
By the time they are ready for battle the Indian Front may have shifted to defensive mode.

Another quiet day. No Allied bombing in Bengal.
An IJN sub hits an 8 point xAK in a 10ish ship convoy south of Fiji. Only the PG Charleston escorting. The xAK was reported sunk.

A ground attack is ordered for tomorrow NW of Rangpur as the two units in the hex were identified as RAF units. 1x IJA Div and 2x Tank Regts will attack them in the open terrain.
2 of 3 Tank Divs arrive in the clear hex W of Rangpur with the 3rd to arrive tomorrow. The noose around Rangpur is nearly ready to tighten.

Nakajima are putting the final plans together for Frank’s production start party.
Now at 9/43, 9 of the 12 x size 30 research factories plus engine bonus are bringing it forward at 18% per day, so production will start on 1 July.

Opinions sought: if you had 12x size 30 factories on Frank A, how many would you let produce and how many would you keep to research Frank-R?
It’s a trade off between getting as many Frank-A into frontline Sentais ASAP to replace Tojos, vs accelerating arrival of the Frank-R.
I’ll also be converting 2x size 60 Tojo factories into 2x size 40 Frank-A factories.

It only has a command radius of 1 so it will need to visit each location in turn. A CL/DD task force will move the VADM and his staff in fast transport mode. VADM Inouye will be replaced (30 PP) before this tour starts as his air skill of 65 is too valuable to lose on a mission like this. ADMs Hasegawa and Kato only cost 30 PP to swap in while all other ADMs cost 45 PP. ADM Hasegawa will remain as Governor-General of Taiwan so ADM Kato will be brought out of retirement to take command of 4th Fleet (aka Central Pacific Area Fleet).

Yes, CAP can shoot recon aircraft down. They usually fly very high. But are you sure that those PBYs are flying recon and not Naval Search at 6k feet while eating the copilots cookies that his mother sent him?

Do you have recon aircraft that you never used in naval search downed in air air?
I don't think i have seen it ever a recon aircraft model only used in recon mission being downed by CAP.

I checked my Int Screen a few days ago and couldn’t see a single Air to Air loss of an Allied recon plane.
Losses only seem to be in the Flak, Ops and Ground columns for me.

Another xAK hit by a torp in that convoy south of Fiji, but not sunk.
KB (with 5x CV) is spotted 9 hexes away from that convoy, probably too late in the day and just too far to launch the Jills.
The Allies could probably transfer 100s of bombers to Fiji and Samoa tomorrow so KB will withdraw north and go dark again for a while.

Attack on the two RAF units pushes them towards Darjeeling, so Rangpur and the hex west of it are now encircled by IJA units.
The IJA 1st (Tank) Army will attack in the clear terrain tomorrow but only has about a 1.8:1 raw AV advantage so might not get a 2:1 result.
If it does get a big win the Allied stack built around 14th Indian Div has nowhere to retreat to. I’ll try to post a few details later.

The IJA also enters the Rangpur hex from the NE avoiding a river crossing.
Probing artillery fire tomorrow will reveal the defenders and their raw AV.

Japanese ground losses:
39 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Assaulting units: Deliberate attack ordered for tomorrow. It might not get 2:1 odds but the total of 515 operational IJA Tanks should do some damage to the Bn and Regt sized units. 9th Infantry Division is 1 mile away so will arrive in Reserve (no pursuit) mode overnigt. The 1st, 4th and 8th Divisions are also moving in from the SW, NWW and W respectively. 11th and 12th Tank Regts will move into this hex from the NE within a couple of days. Aerial bombardments from the IJAAF (Sally and Helen) will also hit this Allied stack tomorrow.
1st Tank Division – LGEN Oba has 128 operational tanks. TOE is 72/83 so this Div will need some refit time (and a lot of supply!) to recover after Rangpur is captured.
2nd Tank Division – LGEN Noda has 227 operational tanks. TOE is 98/100 so this Div is in great shape.
3rd Tank Division – LGEN Sakuma has 160 operational tanks. TOE is 88/96 so is in reasonable shape.

I don't have my game open but I have downed recon planes. But since they fly around 20k and are fast, you need something close to that altitude with radar being helpful. So fighters on CAP at 10k with no radar may not even know that the enemy recon aircraft are even there.

You can down recon planes by fighters in nv search mission, but i never saw it in recon mission. The losses for recon mission that i have seen are all flak.
