I first looked at the IJA Independent Mixed Bdes about 6 months ago to see where they were used historically.
There are quite a few of them and they start arriving soon, bringing some much needed extra assault value to spread around the Empire.

Units with red borders are currently on the map in the locations shown.
Dashed borders indicate Garrison Units or Ind Mixed Regts that become IM Bdes when additional parts arrive.
(*) indicates that the IM Bde will become a Division when additional units arrive.

Locations of units arriving in the future are where they were sent historically.

65th Bde is currently at Manila and will stay there, historically it moved to Rabaul and was destroyed there.
The 65th IM Bde was later raised and sent to the Izu Islands south of Tokyo, then it withdraws 24 May 45.
In this game the 65th Bde and the 65th IM Bde should both exist at the same time.

This image does not show the 1st to 14th Infantry Bdes that arrive in China from Dec 43 to Feb 44.
Their arrival will free up most of the IM Bdes in China from their current garrison duty and allow them to move forward.
Some could be bought out to Southern Army if PP allow. 1st and 2nd IM Bdes historically moved to Iwo Jima and Chichi Jima.
1,2,3,5,8,9 IM Bdes could move to Fusan to add to the Manchukuo garrison total and be bought out in emergencies as required, but there won’t be enough PP to buy out the Divs that I want to plus these IMBs. Instead, most of the IMBs currently in China will move to Burma to garrison rear area bases on railway lines and defend against Allied parachute drops.

7th IMB becomes 115th Div in 288 days so it will move to Manchukuo to join 110th and 116th Divs there.
19th IMB becomes 129th Div in 564 days so it will also move to Manchukuo.
22nd and 23rd IM Bdes will move overland towards Thailand or Malaya.

2nd Garrison Unit (239 days until it can become the 51st IM Bde) is now at Ponape. Historically it defended Truk.
52nd IM Bde doesn’t arrive until late May 1944, so that will probably be too late for it to move all the way to Ponape in this game.

3rd Garrison Unit (only 51 days until it can become the 1st Amphib Bde) is at Kusaie. Historically it defended Eniwetok.
If/when the 1st Amphib Bde is destroyed at Kusaie it will be resurrected and join the other Amphib Bdes in reserve on Hokkaido.

Not all IM Bdes will be moved to their historical locations shown here, but historical locations will be considered before deciding where to move them.

The IM Bdes that arrive in 1943 will be used to get some more combat power to Sumatra (24), Java (29) and the Marianas (30, 31, 32, 33, 34).
The 2nd and 3rd Amphibious Bdes will be held in reserve on Hokkaido as combat troops are still very thin on the ground in that area.

IMBs arriving in 1944+ will move to help defend against the most dangerous Allied axis of advance, as it should be known by then.
Generally the IM Bdes will be used to provide some combat troops in rear areas.

Update on the IJN Base Force and Fleet HQ locations.
Base Forces with red circles are on the map. Those in black circles are yet to arrive, so they are planned locations.

HQ Combined Fleet will withdraw to the Marianas at some point, but its naval support squads are doing good work at Manus Island so will stay there for now.
Nominally under command are 1st Fleet and 1st Air Fleet.
For 1st Fleet, 10th and 11th SBF have been at Tarakan and Balikpapan since early 1942 when there were limited IJN base forces. They will probably stay there to try and protect the oil wells until destroyed.
12th and 15th Base Forces are relatively large and powerful, so if it doesn’t look like the Allies will advance through the Eastern DEI they will be withdrawn at some point back to the Formosa/Okinawa area.
In rear areas, 13th, 14th and 15th SBF will arrive soon.
13th and 14th Base Forces are large and the plan was to use them on Okinawa, but they might be better used to help develop then defend the Bonins.
The plan for 15th SBF is to use it at Amami Oshima, but as the 13th and 14th move forward it will move to Nago on Okinawa, with the Okinawa Base Force to arrive and stay at Naha.

HQ SWAF is at Singapore with 2nd Fleet HQ at Victoria Point and 13th Air Fleet under command.
26th Special Base Force will move to Singapore, 27th SBF to Singkawang and 28th SBF to Port Blair.
22nd SBF is currently at Medan but there is a JAAF Bn there so it will move forward to Sabang to join 22nd JNAFU there.

HQ Southern Fleet historically renamed to be the 1st Southern Expeditionary Fleet, with 3rd Fleet becoming the 2nd Southern Expeditionary Fleet.
I am using HQ Southern Fleet as the HQ “Southern Area Fleet” at Soerabaja with 3rd Fleet HQ at Kendari and 2nd Air Fleet nominally under its command.
30th SBF will move to Manila which will become the fall back position for HQ Southern “Area” Fleet if/when Java is threatened.
33rd SBF is penciled in for Cebu or a similar base in the Philippine Islands between Mindanao and Luzon.

HQ 4th Fleet is at Truk with HQ 6th Fleet at Ponape. Apart from the Base Forces there are plenty of Auxiliaries including AKE in the area.
6th Base Force was all but destroyed at Kwajalein. A remnant was extracted to Eniwetok a year ago to keep Kwajalein from being overstacked which is now only 5% TOE. I need to remember to extract it so it can rebuild, probably to Tinian where the DP guns and a radar will come in handy at some point.
If 1s Base Forces are destroyed in the coming months, they will be resurrected and used to support the Combined Fleet in 1944/45.

HQ NEAF is at Hakodate with HQ 5th Fleet at Shimushiri-jima. The only numbered IJN Base Force up here is the 51st at Ominato.

HQ SEAF is at Rabaul with 8th Fleet forward at Shortlands.
The 1s Base Forces are shared out amongst 4th, 6th, 8th and 9th Fleets so they only get a few each.
PNG has mostly been left to the Army to defend but there are still some JNAFUs there.
HQ 9th Fleet will arrive in 50 days and will probably move to Hollandia.

Indeed, if I hadn’t spent a few hours to update these slides the Allies would never have faced the full force of the mighty 6th Base Force again!

The turn came back overnight, so back to the war!

The DDs keep their ammunition for AA fire if they don’t withdraw far enough by sunrise and the Allies send a strike after them.
The Damage Report shows the airfield with only 14 points of damage and the port with 37, so the Allied engineers are quick to fill in the holes in the runway.

A bit of excitement on the bridge of the Hosho.
B-17s bombing from 15k’ led to some vigorous zig-zagging just off the coast of Buna.

1:1 forts dropped to 2, so the Wotje defenders are almost spent.
A good number of Allied devices were destroyed here, especially vehicles if that’s an accurate report.
Fractions of the 62nd Naval Guard and 45th JNAFU have already been withdrawn by air transport to Kusaie, so they will be moved to Truk to rebuild and be used as another speed bump somewhere else.

This is what George-2s with 70s experience pilots and the numbers advantage can do to FM-1 Wildcats.
3x George-2 Hikotai swept Kwajalein with a max of 36, 36 and 27 fighters each.
201 Ku S-1 det is also at Ailinglaplap with 9x George-2 but was flying range 0 CAP.
17:1 result going by the Int Screen scoreboard.

The enemy had about 30 fighters spotted at Kwajalein yesterday in 2xVMF Sqns but are down to only 5x fighters spotted at Kwajalein now.
At Roi-Namur the Int Staff report 7x fighters, 35x bombers and 6x auxiliaries.

The first two sweeps encountered opposition with the USN radar giving some of the FM-1s the dive bonus, but they couldn’t take advantage.
The last sweep plus a few stragglers swept thin air.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the Allies stand these Wildcats down tomorrow so the Georges will go back to low % CAP too so that they aren’t too tired for when the USN CVs come back.

1x George pilot was KIA with none WIA or MIA.
CPO Yamamoto attains ace status and qualifies for CV service.

Wotje defenders hang on for another day.
Attacking an atoll with anything less than a full Division looks like a bad idea.

Aircraft Ki-84r Frank advances R&D – to 2/44 +20/day. Only 20 days to go until Frank-R starts production.
To help relegate Oscars and Tojos to training roles quickly IGHQ has all but decided to let all Frank-R factories produce. That will churn out 16x Frank-Rs per day which could help win the war on 1 Jan 1944. There are just over 1000 IJA fighters on the map at the moment which will only increase, so without combat losses that would take 60 days to upgrade them all to Frank-R. If combat losses sit at 10x IJAAF fighters/day then it could take 5-6 months to upgrade them all.
Ace pilot Eiichi J. of 64th Sentai is promoted to 2LT
Pilot Matsumoto, Z. is reported as to have escaped capture – an 83 experience IJN fighter pilot from CV Hiyo, with 1 kill.
SC Ch 46 arrives at Fukuyama – will move to 4th Fleet.

The Allies are getting serious now.
This was a single coordinated morning raid on Jessore Airfield. Thankfully there was no afternoon raid.
The B-24s didn’t show up on the image until after the fighter v fighter action had finished.
These Allied fighters are tough, with lots of hits causing damage but not many destroyed.
Fingers crossed that leads to a few crashing on the way home.

All fighter Sentai at Dacca are set to 30% CAP range 0 with 30% LRCAP over Jessore to try and protect both Dacca and Jessore without incurring too much fatigue.
The next morning the airfield is showing 0 damage.

About 50 hurricanes were shot down over Jessore trying to sweep Franks and Tojos for about 5 IJAAF losses.
They wore the CAP down before large coordinated raids arrived from the north aimed at Jessore Airfield.
The airfield is still open but the defending AA guns will need new barrels soon.
Fairly quiet everywhere else.

121 Ku T-1 arrives at Chiba – size 7 Judy recon unit with a 2 plane det due in about 180 days
254 Ku S-1 arrives at Samah – size 18 fighter unit issued with A6M5c. One of the new CVLs will pick it up then it will be assigned to the 2nd Air Fleet. It becomes 901 Ku S-1 on 1 Jan 45. I believe that the 901st was historically based on or around Formosa and was tasked mostly with ASW patrols and convoy escort missions.
263 Ku S-1 arrives at Genzan – starts assigned to 1st Air Fleet, so it was issued with the best reserve pilots and George-2s.
265 Ku S-1 arrives at Kagoshima – posted to CVL Nisshin and issued with 27x A6M5c
321 Ku S-1 arrives at Chiba – size 18 Irving NF unit will take about 3 weeks to fill out then will be bought out to move south.
381 Ku S-1 arrives at Kendari – size 27 Zero unit assigned to the restricted 13th Air Flotilla so it is stuck at Kendari. The CVE task force will move closer to allow it to move.
3rd Tank Regiment arrives at Tokyo – starts planning for Saipan but will need to be bought out for about 80 PP before moving there.

This is the big coordinated sweep that came in from three separate bases against a worn out CAP.

A very large escorted raid on Jessore Airfield with about 200 escorting fighters but only about 30 bombers.
Some unescorted B24s then came in against minimal CAP.
This is going to be a battle of attrition over Jessore.
Frank-R will start production in about 20 days which should help keep IJAAF Sqns full.

Here's the Intelligence and Industry details on 1 Oct 43.
The VP ratio is 3.37 : 1.

Only 92 days to go until the war could be won.
The Allies have the initiative now and it won't be long until their CIC fully realises that.

Allied night bombing of Dacca followed by more daylight raids on Jessore.
An ASW Div of 3x Escorts sunk a USN sub near Akyab.

2x CA Divs and aerial bombardment of the Allied beachhead at Port Moresby led to a 2:1 deliberate attack, but caused more casualties (disablements) to the attackers.
The Allied defenders must have passed the morale checks to avoid surrender.

At this stage of the game these are no longer front line A/C.

30 Sep 42 was a bad day to be a Hurricane pilot.

The sums in the aircraft losses for the Allies don’t add up again, but at least 50 Hurricanes were destroyed today to all causes.

With only 6x Frank-A being built per day there aren’t enough rolling off the production lines to upgrade any more Tojo Sentai.
The reserve pool of Tojos and Franks are barely keeping up.
The reserve pool of 70s skill and experience fighter pilots is steadily increasing though, so aircraft are currently the limiting factor.

When the 10x Frank-R factories are available for production I am starting to lean towards building 16x Frank-R per day to quickly upgrade all IJA fighter units to Franks and start to build a reserve pool for battles in 1944.
I probably won’t need to build 16/day for the rest of the war, but once the pool gets big enough it can be toggled back.
I am not expecting the Tojo-IIc to stay competitive much longer against the increasingly more capable Allied fighters that will appear.

Going by my experience I believe the correct number of aircraft lost is always the one on the right side of display. Enemy losses that are shown broken down by type are usually highly inflated, but occasionally I have seen it underestimated as well.

Check your upgrade paths, I don't believe all can upgrade to Franks. Even with PDU-ON I think the devs limited this for good reason.

I've read they can be against the Soviets when they come in.

I just had a quick look through a random selection of Fighter Sentai but didn't spot one that can't upgrade to Franks.

Good point on the Ruskies.
Tojo IIc could keep building at 1/day. There would then be a pool for late game cannon fodder if the Franks all get shot down.
Oscar IIb are currently building at 2/day but they will be switched off once the Frank-R starts and won't produce again until the Oscar IV is available. Oscar IV isn't being researched so it comes late, but a SR1 fighter with cannons might shoot something down.

A few Allied night time bombing raids hit Dacca but not in big numbers.
The new target for the Allies last night was Rangpur, but there is a Nick-C Sentai there on NF duty too so no damage was done.
The obligatory Nick-C was shot down by defensive fire in most raids, but the pilots tend to be WIA rather than KIA.
That just means they come back from the hospital one day with about 40 experience and have to train up again!

The Frank Sentais all flew to Rangoon the day before to pick up new kites and stock up on contraband, so any Franks that could fly today moved back to Dacca and the rest will join them as soon as they repair.

Another fairly quiet day, which is good!
Routine night bombing by 4E continues in India, slowly “sweeping” Nick C on their NF patrols.
A medium sized TK full of fuel spontaneously combusted after being hit by a USN sub torp near Daito Shoto.
The Merchant Fleet is starting to have a slight excess of TKs now but the USN subs are nibbling away at them...

The IJA 3rd Division is transferred to the Southern Expeditionary Army reserve for 1457 PP, leaving 23 in the bank.
LGEN Maruyama and staff will continue planning for the defence of Tinian while awaiting transports at Chittagong.

4th and 5th Divisions are also at Chittagong, with more than half of the 4th Division already on ships and close to Rangoon, relatively safe from the Allied sub swarm along the Arakan Coast.
Operation DumpSupplyatChittagong is continuing by relatively low value xAK and xAKL. Once the supply is unloaded the merchants are picking up troops and moving them back to reorganise at Rangoon. Larger xAK or xAP will then pick up the 3rd, 4th and 5th Division troops from Rangoon and move them to the Marianas.

Unless you've halted their production you get a whole lotta small merchies that will convert to TK's.

Ive halted the xAK Std-D/E/F as they don’t convert to TK.
I am converting all xAK Std-A/B/C but have halted construction of the ones that come late war.

I suggest restarting those ships, you do not want to run out of tankers and the US submarines only get better and more numerous.
