Are there ways to Identify a bogey as friend or foe without having to get up close?

This is a new feature of CMO where you cannot identify a contact unless your radar is NCTR (non cooperative target recognision) capable
Only AEW aircrafts are NCTR capable and the most modern aesa radars
The only other option is to have some E/O sensor (IRST) to do the identification

You are able to manually mark contacts with a posture. Section 6.8 of the manual covers this.

Of course, if you mark something as Friendly, don't forget that you don't really know their intent.
