A fairly quiet turn. The action was over before I could take a screenshot of a combat event.

RADM Miwa breathes a sigh of relief as his Tonan Waler task force passes Tokara Retto on the way to Fukuoka.
With no enemy submarines reported around Sasebo by HQ 3rd Naval District for days, he has reason to believe that the approach will be uneventful from here.

Only a single combat event with some Helens bombing troops in Bengal.

SigInt reports a lot of amphibious ships at Pearl Harbour.
Better there rather than moving West across the Pacific somewhere.

San Francisco is showing as 2/0 so no details are showing on ships or aircraft there.

Thanks, I remember reading that somewhere.
They might fight the same, but the Cav Regt has a nasty habit of getting itself destroyed when it is separate, so it would be quicker/ easier to rebuild it after it recombines as a Div.
30 and 31 Divs shouldn’t face combat for a good few months yet, so I’ll reassess if/when the Allies threaten the South Burma coast.

I also thought that some divisions when combined also get new devices as well.

I also thought that some divisions when combined also get new devices as well.

Yes, replacement devices can arrive but the allocation from the pools is per unit or unit segment. Splitting the unit gives 3X the chances of drawing the replacements, if there are enough to go around.

On an upgrade (if that is what you meant by new devices), the segments will receive the devices sequentially - first A segment, then when that has filled its complement, B segment and after that C. As you know, that could prevent recombining the division until all the segments have the new device in the same slot.

EDIT: Should have mentioned for newcomers, that splitting the unit to take upgraded devices is advantageous when the new devices are created from the old ones (as well as from new production). E.G. If your division segment A has 150 Infantry Squads 1941 TOE, and the upgrade is to 1943 TOE, the pool only needs 150 of the new 1943 squads to replace the A segment requirement. In a turn or two, the old 1941 squads returned to the pools will automatically upgrade to the new 1943 squads and can to upgrade the B segment of the Division. This is much faster than keeping the Division intact and waiting for the pools to accumulate the entire 450 '1943 squads' needed.

I can confirm that 30th and 31st Divs don’t get any extra sub-units or devices when they combine.
Some of the Ind Mixed Bdes that I recently combined in the DEI are able to draft in a bonus Engineer Company (8x Engr squads) each after they’ve combined that wasn’t part of either previous LCU.

For Japan, device upgrades occur so long as there are enough Manpower, Armaments, Vehicle points in the pool and a few other criteria are met, like enough Supply to take those devices.
Very few devices have a monthly build rate and a pool like the Allies have that constrains them.
From memory it is mostly the non-Japanese devices like those used in Indian, Thai and VietMinh Militia units.

The advantage of having larger units is that they tend to be more resilient after taking casualties in larger combats.

LGEN Nakazawa has 6x Infantry Divs under command at Chittagong now with the recent arrivals from Comilla.
1st Tank Div just moved to cover the withdrawal and was ordered to move back to Chittagong today.
It got plastered by Allied aircraft flying from Calcutta, showing the IJAAF how to strafe and bomb tanks in the open.
The damage was light, with a few trucks destroyed and general disruption that will recover quickly.

LGEN Nakazawa is ordered to defend Chittagong until 1 Jan 1944, then prepare to withdraw south along the coast road after that date.
11th Infantry Division has found itself out of position with all of the other 10s Divs in the central sector around Silchar-Imphal.
20th Infantry Division has already moved one hex SE of Chittagong and is digging into the Jungle terrain with orders to secure the withdrawal route towards Cox’s Bazar.

1x AA Coy is ordered to stay at Comilla as the sacrificial rear guard to force the Allies to destroy the fortifications when the capture it.

It was disappointing that the attacks on the lone US Army Tank Bn that is in the open didn’t seem to do anything, but the war goes on.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 16, 43
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Air attack on TF, near Tulagi at 114,137 – forgot to change the orders for these Jakes. Same result!

Morning Air attack on 15th Indian Heavy AA Regiment, at 57,36 , near Rangpur – what looked like another lone Tank Bn in the open turned out to be a Heavy AA Regt! Too late to cancel the strikes that have been ordered today…
Weather in hex: Severe storms
Ki-84r Frank x 23
23 x Ki-84r Frank sweeping at 20000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on 1st Tank Division, at 56,40 , near Chittagong – 1st Tank Div moved forward from Chittagong just in case the US Tank Bn rushed forward to cut the railway from Comilla-Chittagong. It didn’t. 1st Tank Div was ordered back to Chittagong in Reserve mode. The Allies send in strafe and bomb missions against the IJA’s tanks in the open to comparatively great effect. This is what I was hoping for in reverse. 1st Tank Div did complete the move back to Chittagong so are back under cover of local range 0 CAP for tomorrow.
Weather in hex: Overcast
Ki-84r Frank x 11 – only 1x Sentai was set to LRCAP with the others set over Comilla. Should have concentrated them here instead. Need to try and remember this as there will be future opportunities to set large LRCAPs over troops in the open.

It was only a matter of time…
USS Tang just scored a brace against Tonan Maru #2 outbound for Singapore…
She stayed afloat for a few hours but sank during the air combat phase.

Half BB Hyuga is ready for action. Her sister, Half BB Ise, should be ready tomorrow.
BB Div 2 will then reform and move south to join the CVL task force.
That will in turn allow all 4x Kongos to join the CV task force, as two are currently in the CVL task force.

The 2x Half BBs will form a temporary task force with CVEs Shinyo and Kaiyo and some DD escorts to run the gauntlet of the USN sub swarm and head south to the Marianas.

IGHQ are starting to ponder whether the Half BBs and perhaps the CVLs might be able to combine to strike at the RN Cruisers who are likely to reappear shortly at Chittagong.

5 x H8K2-L Emily transporting 3rd JNAF Coy from Rossel Island – the original idea was to base some Jakes on these islands near PNG, but getting supply to them is only going to get more challenging and Jakes at larger bases like Milne Bay do the same job. The JNAF Coys will be withdrawn to boost aviation support at IJNAF Bases that need them.

Lanai expands port to size 2
Probolinggo expands airfield to size 4 – had to check whether this was Japanese or Allied and where this was! It’s the rough hex next to Soerabaja. Size 4 airfield might be enough to use it as a support airfield to help cover Soerabaja once the Allied bombers start arriving in this area.
Olga expands port to size 4
Ace pilot Kado P. of 59th Sentai is promoted to 2LT
Low garrison leads to damage and 1 VP loss from partisan attack at Comilla (56, 39)!
DD Wilson is reported to have been sunk near Ailuk on Oct 27, 1943
901 Ku T-1 arrives at Chiba – The 901st were historically used around Formosa and that is the plan in this game too. Both of these units have been bought out to 2nd Air Fleet. This is a G3M3 Nell unit that will fill out with good pilots and fly long range naval search missions over the main convoy routes running past Formosa to Japan.
901 Ku T-2 arrives at Chiba – upgraded to H8K2 Emily, once they repair this unit might move forward into the Pacific to help cover gaps in the long range patrol screen. Maybe to Iwo-jima to cover an arc from NE to SE.

I think they are meant to, but this was via the upgrade path not conversion path.
It looks to me like it could be a database error that the 12/43 BB Ise upgrade has zero days delay. It just takes about 18 days to repair the system damage caused by the upgrade.
The other 2x Half BBs are on the 6 month conversion path.

Here are some screen shots to show the options to either convert starting 12/43 or upgrade starting 9/43, then a 12/43 upgrade that gets the same ships as would have been converted but earlier. The only difference I can see is that following the upgrade path doesn't change the air units to E16A1 Pauls. From the database I assume that the 12/43 conversion of this class would change the air units to E16A1.

Fuso class doesn't have the same glitch as the 12/43 BB upgrade is a dead end.
The conversion either has to be taken before the 12/43 upgrade is allowed to start or those two ships will stay as BBs for the rest of the game.

I did mine the standard way.

Looks to me like another 'House Rule'.

BTW, I don't think any of the FP's may convert to FF's (I'll check). Does't mean I can't resize and replace it with another unit. I checked for FF's units that can do this before I started the conversions. Japan has at least four units capable of doing so. Coincidence? I doubt it in this game.

The first strafing attack did nothing again, but Helens from 9k and 11k feet got some hits.
A second Nick unit then did knock out a couple of vehicles.

Even if the strafing appears to do no damage, it will cost the enemy supplies, and increase the fatigue and disruption. It does make the air units doing this attack vulnerable.

Johnston Island expands port to size 3

This could be the prelude to big Allied air attacks on Chittagong in the coming days.
Sea Hurricane sweep was knocked down
P-38H sweep was knocked down
3. A big coordinated sweep but the CAP scrambles and does very well.
4. was the P-40N5s that were trashed, but the CAP is slowly dropping in numbers.

The problem will be that the damaged aircraft can’t rail out to anywhere, so will have to repair in place.
LRCAP might have to start covering Chittagong from supporting airfields.

RN Cruisers will probably come back to visit soon too.
I don’t think it would be a good idea to move the entire KB to the Bay of Bengal and leave the Marianas open, but the CVLs might be enough to counter the RN. Unless the USN is moving there in the background to support an invasion of Burma…

A big win in the air for the IJAAF today.
Global pilot losses are also sustainable at this rate.
The IJAAF pilot losses over Chittagong were 6x KIA 2x WIA spread across the 4x fighter units shown here.
The defending units had very good experience gains and morale is still high.

The Allied sweeps were just probes with none of their big bombers launched, but that can only be a matter of days away.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the Allies are losing a lot of recon planes to flak. They must be flying them too low.
The IJAAF Dinahs are flying at max altitude and don’t lose many to flak as a result.

The game has progressed to Christmas Eve 1943.
I suggested to the Allied CIC that he give all forces leave for the Christmas-New Year period.
VP ratio is now 3.2 : 1 and very slowly dropping.
