BTW, where did you get that book "The Big Book of Insane Ideas" as I would like to get a copy for myself.

warspite1

I've read it - its great.

There is a chapter on "Wouldn't it be great to attack the USA in December 1941"

There is a chapter on "Let's not enter the World Cup of football in 1930 because we're British, we invented the game and we should be in charge, so there".

There is also a chapter on how "I've a great idea for attacking Greece in October 1940, in the mountains, in late autumn, with a fraction of the troops necessary and with little or no warning to the air force and navy"

In fact there is quite a lot of insane ideas that came out of Italy in the 30's and 40's......

I remember how people laughed at the original Star Trek with their portable communicators, stating that something like that would never work. The a Swede (no, a real person and not a vegetable) invented the cell phone.

How about the person driving a horseless carriage where people would yell "Get a horse!"

How about where military people thought that artillery was supposed to be dug in and and not mobile on a battlefield? AT least until a US Cavalryman hooked some of his smaller cannons to a team of horses and moved them during the battle. Then Slavic German got the idea to mount infantry support artillery pieces on older tanks an use them on a battlefield.

How about that unsinkable ship that ran into an iceberg and sank?

Can England end 55 years of hurt tonight?

Well we have some decent players, we have home advantage – so we have a chance, but…….this is England and so even if we do triumph, it will likely not be an easy ride for anyone supporting the three lions…..

1966 – England’s only win in the Football World Cup – but despite being at home and being the better team on the day, England allowed Germany to equalise in the 89th minute. There was then the controversial linesman’s call before Geoff Hurst wrapped it up with the final kick of the game.

2003 – England’s only win in the Rugby World Cup – but despite being the clear favourites and out-playing Australia, the English forwards couldn’t put the game to bed with handling error after handling error, and it took a last kick of the game from Johnny Wilkinson to finally overcome the Aussies.

2019 – England’s only win in the Cricket World Cup – but despite being at home and playing New Zealand in the final (rather than the more fancied Australia or India) it took a super over and a boundary count back to separate the sides.

I think for invention or heritage sport one must not look for victory all the time. EX: Wrestling is Turkish heritage sport(not inventor of that sport branch course) but with medal summary Soviet Union&Russian Federation overall better. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Wrestling_Championships. But It is still like Sushi Japan born but Scandavia make very high quality sushi.

Different sport branch statistics is apple and orange. Not England destiny to lose finals. I believe in final match home advantage is less concern. Dramatic example is Brasil and Uruguay. Better side will win.

Such a load of rubbish - Italy in black shorts and England in white... I can only assume Italy asked to wear black shorts as they won most of their games wearing them and it was a superstitious thing??... Even so, it was total rubbish for the purist.

Anyway, the end to 55 years of hurt was not to be. We fell, yet again, to penalties but to be honest had only ourselves to blame.

Things were going wrong for Italy and they fixed it. They - like Croatia three years ago - then came out and were the better side in the second half and England simply didn't react... it was just one way traffic.

Why, given what was happening, Grealish wasn't given a chance earlier I just don't know. Sterling disappeared in the second half and Mount just never got into the game (again). Both Italian centre backs had yellow cards, but we never tried to exploit that.....

But, one has to congratulate the Italians. They deserved to win over the 120 minutes and England.... well, we are used to this feeling by now - but it never hurts any less.

Euro 2020 Final

England 1 Italy 1 with Italy winning the penalty shootout.

A fascinating match where England got off to a bright start and Italy gradually edged back into the game as they recovered from the initial setback. Southgate's defensive safety-first strategy slowly came undone as it became clear there was no plan b to England's game. Where Italy was able to adapt, England were stuck in the same groove they started with three or four weeks ago. The Italian equalizer was well deserved. Extra-time came and went. And then another loss on penalties which England are only too familiar with. Overall, Italy were worth winners. They were undoubtedly the best and most consistent team at the tournament.

Taking the tournament as a whole, Euro 2020 threw up some cracking games and I have enjoyed watching all the games. Teams that have impressed me most: Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Czech Republic and Italy.

As Edorf noted above... Forza Italia!!!

Best wishes,
Steve

I wasn't able to really follow the match, only snippets between the GIGASCREEN and the television in the kitchen (but this time we had the volume of the GIGASCREEN up: yesterday no one was here to make conversation).

My first thought was "Come on Italy! Let's score immediately and then just keep up the pressure!" That got old very fast, but truth was that England was the better team during the first half. It didn't matter if they scored on the 1' or the 45'. Italy was really underperforming. We lacked our clean structure of ball control and precise passages. I was not optimistic.

Then things started to change. Italy grew and England looked if they were playing for time. Both teams weren't at their best: Italy finally controlled the ball and the game but they lacked their usual spunky sudden shoots that so much good did in the previous matches. England was scarier on the attack, but they seldom did try.

And then England just sat there, with still '30 minutes to go. I don't know what happened. Kane disappeared in a "poof!" Italy finally brought out their dominating style and the equaliser was only a question of time. Sadly, during what possibly was our best moment in the match, Chiesa got injured. This deprived us of a key offensive player and destroyed the momentum.

I feel that Italy was the better team in the tired extra time. We had marginally more fuel than England and created a couple of clear goal occasions. As usual, I hoped for no penalty shootout but there we went and Italy won. In all fairness, the result of the shootout went to the deserving ones: the dudes who booed during the Italian national anthem.

[As an aside, I read that the three black players that missed their penalties are being targeted by racist abuse What is wrong with these guys?]

England was really scary for one half of the game and Kane was the best player on the pitch - for a while. Then Italy rallied, England sputtered and, at the end, I feel that we could have won without the shootout. Penalties are a coin toss that just leaves players unjustly broken and depressed (even if Donnarumma's saves were really something).

It is funny to see the pundits explaining in painstakingly details England's errors when, had two penalties gone the other way, it would be Mancini the one on the cross.

What followed was a wonderful night for a country that needed it after a very dark period. As our beloved President Pertini said back in 1982, after Italy's victory at the World Cup: "Every week must have a Sunday!"

Side note 1: For those wondering why Mancini and Vialli embraced each other and started to cry, they, as team mates playing for Sampdoria, lost the European Cup to Barcelona on this very pitch in 1992. 29 years later they won.

Side note 2: the scores for Sterling's dives are in.

FRA GER SPA POR DEN RUS

1st Dive: 7.5 7.7 6.9 6.5 7.8 7.0
2nd Dive: 8.1 7.8 6.9 7.3 7.9 7.8
3rd Dive: 6.4 6.5 6.0 6.9 6.1 5.9

Thanks Azzurri!

It sounds like a game where which team had the better physical training in regards to stamina. Considering just how many games that they play, the stamina and those little nagging injuries really show up in these matches where the teams always have to be their best just to continue on for another game . . .

Well Pickford saved the same number as Donnarumma and the Italian penalties - well certainly Jorginho's, was better than Sancho's and Saka's. Both nearly reached one each but not quite. The difference was Rashford's hit the post - but Donnarumma had gone the wrong way.

So I would say the better keeper for that particular set of 5 each was Pickford. But the Italian outfield players took better penalties.

Congrats Italy...and my condolences to England.

Maybe Southgate was wrong choosing the players for penalty time. But it was reasonable to choose all the possible forwards. They failed their job, not the coach.

Never try "Italian Food" (quote/unquote) outside Italy, toh

Do you mean to say that when I go to a local store and they have imported food from Italy that I should not try it?

Or that the raviolis that I ate at someone's house were terrible even though his mother could not speak English? Only Italian?

Or the restaurant that I went to in Germany which had a female wolf statue with two toddlers?

Or when I go to a restaurant who's founder* may have came from Italy, that I should not eat there?

*I do not know if she did or not, but it is quite likely since the original restaurant was started in 1934.

The first problem is that these is NO Italian food. It may sound amazing, given the number of "Italian restaurants" around the World, but in reality that you have Italian regional food as the major generalisation - and the real truth is that every town/province has their own food. "Tuscan food", one of the best known around the World, may be defined as a selection of foods typical of Tuscany, but the food you eat in Florence is quite different than the one you eat in Lucca (I like more Lucca's BTW). The very oil used is different.

So, you have Milanese food, which is different from Pavia's (only 40 minutes drive). And then all comes down to specific ingredients. Italians learned to cook by putting together the best they could find in their area. "Risotto alla Milanese" is made with rice, saffron, parmesan (and notice the root: Parma), white wine and Milanese sausage (or sometimes minced meat). Roman or Calabrese sausages are quite different: you can't really make a "Risotto alla Milanese" with Calabrese sausage (well, you can, if you hate that people come to dinner to you too often...)

So, to sum it up:

- You can go to a local store, buy food from Italy (ingredients I guess - I hope you don't mean frozen food) and cook something with Italian ingredients. Maybe you also get a good result. But to cook true (insert a Italian City/region here) food you need a shop that sells specific ingredients from that area, and follow their specific recipes.

- If the raviolis are dire they are dire. My eldest daughter can't boil an egg...

- I once went to eat in "The Best Italian Restaurant in Washington D.C.", a stunningly classy place on the harbor. We were... high on alcohol, when the owner came to ask us how it was going. My friends, who had secretly decided to pull a joke on me, pointed their fingers in my direction and told "He is the expert!" - then immediately raising their phones. Undaunted, I pulled out a pen and started to correct the menu - because not even the dishes' names were printed right (I mean... if you own a classy "Italian Restaurant", just ask to a Italian to check the menu). The owner disappeared and we got a second round of sweeties and liquors "on the house". That was my experience with this Italian Super-restaurant (Las Vegas was worse but at least they didn't pretend...)

- It doesn't matter who the founder is - what matters is the quality of the food. I know people from places like China and Egypt who are very good cooks of "Italian food". But, at the end, the problem outside Italy remain the ingredients. What is common here costs you an arm and a leg if you have to import it. So, the best solution is to concentrate on "classic" Italian foods and mass-import the right ingredients - something, however, I seldom saw during my culinary trips.

But he didn't..... Why didn't he pick Sterling or Grealish and picked Maguire?

Sterling was having a largely rubbish second half and extra time. I thought the only reason he was being kept on was he would take a penalty, but.......

Grealish has said he volunteered to take one but wasn't even in line for the next two!!

Who knows? Fact is I don't blame anyone that misses a penalty. I would soil myself walking to the penalty area... and a manager goes with what he thinks is right or what his players thinks is right. After all Venables trusted in Southgate when he volunteered.

The only thing I look back on with regret is Southgate not changing things early in the second half when we were going into Croatia MkII mode. But maybe it wouldn't have made a difference if he'd tried something. England as a team failed last night.

Sadly these pond life live in plain sight. One associates such scum perhaps to be boot wearing, shaven haired yobs, but its not that simple.

Congratulations to Italy as one of the favourites of mine after Italy&Turkey match. Italy managed to win against technical(Spain), physical(England) and the worst side in whole tournament(Turkey). Against all different football styles.

In 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia whole Moscow and Leningrad territory was occupied police. As a secret host for this tournament English police was very weak I should say according to videos I see. I wonder what UEFA will do about.

Congratulations England. A well deserved place in the Finals. And lost a match that could have gone either way.

In a way, England lost on a coin toss. One could argue whether going first, or not, is a real advantage. But, I suspect, that few argue against that being the last to shoot a penalty is under enormous pressure. Especially when the stakes are so high. And when the penalty shooter are facing the huge amount of excited fans.

Anyway. Your team has great potential in the world cup next year. Unless, of course, the internal English pressure on the team breaks it (perhaps the English press should play it cool?).

For me at least, the events of last Sunday and after, off the pitch put the action on the pitch firmly in the background. Football the world over has issues that need to be addressed - but I don't think these are really football issues and its not something the football authorities can cure.

A big thing has been made of the booing of the anthems now. Why? Its always been a depressing feature of England games. Why not do something earlier? Some of the other stuff that happened has no place being mentioned here. I would like to see UEFA grow a set and tell the FA there will be no more tournaments, no more CL finals or anything prestige in England until they can guarantee that the shocking scenes witnessed last Sunday won't happen again.

What a rubbish end to what was a great festival of football.

Philadelphia set up a municipal court at the stadium to speedily try fans for misbehavior at Eagles games. It was effective...perhaps England (or is it British?) soccer do something similar.

well there are things to look forward to. Will any Scottish clubs still be playing in European competitions by the end of July is always a fun one. And of course the inevitable optimism that flows from Spurs winning all their pre-season matches?

Or not ..

well give Celtic credit, they have taken the goal of being knocked out of Europe before August very seriously.

And, it seems as if Barcelona are effectively bankrupt?

I hate football.

Thank you for inventing it...

I had forgotten about the title change. Thank you for fixing it.

Still hate it. Edit: And with it I refer to football.
