Allied Recon aircraft just started taking photos of Vientiane, Luangprabang, Lao Cai and Vinh south of Hanoi and they are all vacant of IJA troops.
That is 16, 15 and 19 hex range from Chittagong respectively, but the recon aircraft could be flying from a different base like Dacca.
Recon photos were also taken of Chiang Mai and Ayuthia (next to Bangkok), but they have reasonable garrisons.

The Chindit Bdes have been spotted in the jungle, but other airborne assets might be available to the Allied Joint Chiefs.
The Int Staff (in game database) say that the C-87 Liberator has a 20 hex normal range.

The pre-war plan was to replace the Royal Thai Army with small raiding units as garrisons, but I don’t think these three bases were on the list to allocate garrison troops to.
HQ 10th Air Div could be bought out from Tokyo and moved to Hanoi relatively quickly, with a few JAAF AF Bns rustled up to join it.
HQ 8th Air Div arrives in 65 days at Takao, so that is a slower option.

There are plenty of transport aircraft in Burma, so if the Allies do try a long range para drop they will be able to quickly fly free troops into this area to counter.
50th Div arrives on Formosa in 41 days so it could be bought out to move to Hanoi, closer to the other 50s Divs in Burma.
Alternatively, some of the smaller units due to arrive soon attached to HQ 4th Fleet could be diverted to Indochina.
An Independent Mixed Regt at each of these bases, plus Hanoi and others nearby could have merit, but there are likely higher priority missions for those IMRs.
Troops from near Hanoi could be shifted to the Philippines fairly quickly if the Allies don’t continue to push overland through Burma and Thailand.

30th Div is in reserve at Bangkok, yet to form as a Division. It will send 74th and 77th Infantry Regts plus the Engineer and Recon Regts to Vientiane.
A few JAAF Coys will withdraw from Burma and one of the two JAAF Bns in reserve at Saigon will move to Hanoi.
Developing airfields along the Indochina railway could come in handy later in 1944 or into 1945 to try and delay any Allied move through Thailand.

These Spitfire VIIIs were very hard to hit.
I don’t usually watch the combat replay in normal time, but watching this one I could see the Spitfires dancing out of the way of the Franks.
The dogfighting ability of the Spitfire VIII was pretty clear, with the pilots evading Frank attacks often and then getting shots away to damage quite a few Franks in return.
7x Spitfire VIIIs more than held their own against 36x Franks.
Having a radar in the hex would have helped, but it moved out into the hex one to the SW where it will wait for the Allied Army to advance.

I wonder how the horses of the Cavalry Regt will like the tropics.
This 1944 B-type Div doesn’t seem to be able to upgrade its AT guns to the 47mm versions, which is a shame.

I had a hunch there might be some action in SOPAC based on spotting some larger ships at Lunga, so set the Bettys to day time strike out to one hex short of Tassafaronga.
DDs are hard to hit with torps.
The afternoon strike seemed to concentrate on the already damaged Strong.

Status: offline 		The idea behind this 1st Army operation is not to advance on Chittagong, but to try and divert some Allied force off the Chittagong - Cox's Bazar Road.
I don't want the Allies to just keep marching down the coastal road with 6+ Divisions without having to think about being cut off.
One problem is that the 2nd Tank Div takes a long time to move through the Jungle Rough terrain, so if the Allies do send lots of troops off road to reinforce the Chindits, the only way the 2nd Tank Div will leave this hex will be if they are routed.

George-2s were dancing with Corsairs who had the dive thanks to the George/Judy combo flying at 15k’ so they could get some dive bombing runs at the DDs.
2x 800kg bomb hits but the DDs don’t show up as heavily damaged.
The main price paid was 5x IJN fighter pilots: 3xKIA, 1xMIA, 1xWIA. 1x DB pilot was also KIA.
Not bad to put the Allies on notice that this area will be contested.

Just noticed that LGEN Nishihara is an Army HQ Commander, so LGEN Fujioka will take over as commander 23rd Div to free Nishihara up for a HQ Command.
LGEN Fujioka was a MGEN commanding 9th IMB at this point of the real war, before promotion and command of 62nd Div on Okinawa from 1 Mar 1945.

Lunga has 15 ships in port with some decent sized targets amongst them.
If the CAs are CAs they would be good to sink, but they could just be large auxiliaries.

Other enemy forces include a PT boat screen in the shallows off Tassafaronga.
Tulagi is a PT boat base with no large ships spotted in port.
The main targets for KB will be the ships in task forces at Lunga. Whether they stay there or try another bombardment run is the main unknown.
I don’t think they will withdraw, so an 8 hex strike distance is set, with KB to stand off the reef at Ontong Java and launch from there.
VADM Kusaka on the Kaga has local command.

Some Hellcats and Corsairs scramble but not many.
Interesting to see lots of A6M8 get the dive bonus from 15k’, so the CAP may not have got much warning time. The bombers all got through unscathed.
Disappointing result from high skilled pilots in light cloud conditions…
USS St Louis had a magazine explosion but most of the pilots displayed the accuracy of stormtroopers…
A few bombers were shot down by scrambling CAP on the way back to the carriers.

The CV task force is spotted 10/10, the CVL task force 2/3, but the 2xBB and 2xCA task forces are not spotted.
I expect that the Allies will fly reinforcements in so KB will withdraw to replenish and won’t stay for a second day.
Overall a little disappointing, but still a bit of excitement which may surprise the Allied joint chiefs and make them adjust their plans.
Now they know where all the IJN CVs are it may prompt some action in a different sector.

The Allies reacted and rush forward searching for KB.
Only this one Betty torp hit in the morning strikes, but KB is 8 hexes to the north with strikes still set to 8 hex range.
This could be a good turn!

Afternoon strikes and the first wave of Bettys all miss, while the second wave sinks USS Honolulu.
Reports of KB strikes in bound in the bottom left corner, but weather plays a part today and some strike packages return to base without finding the target…
It could be a small KB strike on this task force which is a shame.

Status: offline 		Grace gets what I think is their first hit in combat which slows HMAS Canberra down enough for more hits.

The splintered Judy strike then gets one hit on USS Pensacola, but the AA fire is effective at putting off their aim.

This explains the reports of long range patrols being shot down by CAP.
Here comes the USN!
Two big CV task forces in the SW of this image, with CA escorts.
The task forces approaching Marcus Island have CA and CVE spotted so far.
Potential CV raid of the Marianas with Marcus Island as an invasion target?

Emergency CAP will be set over Marianas bases and the Marcus Islands defenders will be told to tighten their chin straps…
KB is near Truk but heading to Guam where they were going to replenish.
They might need to stop at Truk to replenish after the recent excitement around the Solomons and standby to react to this threat.
I need to try and avoid the 500+ USN CV fighters and 500ish bombers while trying to strike at a softer target.
Easier said than done now that the Allies know where KB is.

This Allied op must have been launched about a week ago anyway for ships to be where they are now.
Things are definitely getting interesting in the Pacific now.

Status: offline 		Is this OP FORAGER about to kick off a few months early, or just a large demonstration?

The USN are obviously spoiling for a fight now after rushing forward with the CA TF in SoPac yesterday.
The strategic map is needed to show the opposing forces for this one.
The USN CVs are currently 16 hexes NE of Truk, so they could flank speed run 18 hexes to just past it.

I expect the 2x USN CVTFs to move SW, possibly at flank speed to try and engage the Combined Fleet as they have spotted the CV, CVL and 1xCA task forces moving NW towards Guam. The 2xBB and 1xCA IJN task force seem to be unspotted at the moment, but if the Allies knew they were there too they would probably be even more likely to rush forward towards them.

The IJN CVE task force (with CVL Mizuho and CVEs Hosho, Taiyo and Shinyo) is unspotted at Tinian with 81x A6M8 aboard. Taiyo is empty but 6th Ku S-1/C is due to arrive at Tokyo tomorrow and was going to join her… If she is still afloat it will join her within the week.
The USN is 13 hexes East of Saipan, so the CVE task force will send all aircraft ashore and withdraw the ships West towards Babeldoab to try and stay hidden and out of the action. There is a risk that the USN will surge West and sink it, but probably safer for these ships to move West rather than stay under the land based CAP in the Marianas.

On the assessment that the USN CVs will rush SW, all Combined Fleet task forces will move 8 hexes at mission speed to put them all in the same hex, 12 hexes SW of Truk and 4 hexes NE of Manus Island. That should put them about 10 hexes from where the USN CV task forces could finish their flank run, so outside of USN CV strike range tomorrow.
That might allow KB to disappear off the Allied plot to then move NW via Babeldoab before coming back to support the Marianas.

All land based fighter units will go to 70% CAP, with concentrations at Manus and Truk.
Auxiliary ships will stay in port to try and attract port strikes, while local patrol task forces (SC, AMc) will also stay at Truk and the Marianas bases to try and attract naval strikes.

IJNAF strike aircraft will move backwards to either Iwo Jima or Babeldoab to clear the runways for fighter aircraft.
Manus and Truk will have highly trained IJN fighter concentrations.
Manus will also have some Franks from 4th Air Army on PNG.
The Marianas based IJNAF units are mostly trainees, with a mix of <70 Air Skill, some with 70 Air skill but training Strafe skill, and others who have 70/70 in Air/Strafe but are still <70 experience. They are all flying A6M8, George-2 or George-5 so have decent aircraft.
Their mission (if USN CVs do continue west) will be to try and wear down the USN strike power.
Iwo Jima has a couple of A6M8 units that are also training, but they might move forward to the Marianas to add numbers.

If the USN CV based air power can be depleted against IJNAF land based fighter assets, the Combined Fleet and the land based strike aircraft may then move forward in a few days time to try and hit back.

That’s the best plan I can come up with in the time available, as I want to get the orders in and the turn back overnight to see what happens!

The IJN will to try and lure the USN further forward, allow the USN to strike first at low value targets covered by based assets, see what the enemy does for the next day or two and then have fresh forces available to react.
If this is just a big USN raid with no amphibious forces following up, Combined Fleet may stay back in the shadows and redeploy to somewhere like the Iwo Jima area to wait for the real show (with amphibs) to start.

Orders are done:
Truk has 216 Georges with 70+ average experience pilots who should take a few chunks out of any USN CV strike against that base.
Manus has 129 George/Zero with about 200 Franks nearby who could reinforce tomorrow if the USN CVs do move SW to hunt for KB.
Marianas bases have 360 IJN fighters with CAP set with ranges (which I don’t often do) to allow them to cover each other if required.
Lots of rookie pilots there, so it will be interesting to see how they go if the USN does strike against the Marianas tomorrow.

Status: offline 		The USN moved slightly WNW and attack the Marianas!

Reports of lots of search aircraft of all types shot down by CAP.
Area CAP scrambles and the George-5s make first contact, starting to shoot down Hellcats!

It looks like the Combined Fleet should be safe to replenish at Manus Island tomorrow.

A6M8s also got some Hellcat kills which was a good sign.
The CAP then got stuck into the dive bombers, shooting down about 50 despite the report showing 34.

Wave 2 had 18 Avengers which were all shot down. SC CHa-47 dodged 500lb bombs dropped from 5000 feet.
Some escorting Hellcats got the dive on the defending CAP so there must be a mess of scrambling CAP cloud all over the place, as indicated by the red blob.
The mission to wear down the Allied strike force seems to be working, but there are hundreds more bombers where these ones came from…

Status: offline 		There are still 478 USN fighters spotted in the 2x CV task forces, so they “only” lost about 1/6th of their Hellcats today.
There are still 384 USN bombers spotted.

Only 1x George-5 was lost to an ops reason, crashing on return to base.
George-5 look like they are well worth the investment.

More than 40 IJN search aircraft were lost. Lesson learnt there, stand down most air units from search so that those aircraft are available for strike missions.
Tomorrow it will just be the Jakes that fly search missions as there are plenty of them in the reserve pool and their pilots are only trained in NavS and ASW.
Losing Betty/Jill and Judy pilots on search missions is a bit of a waste, but a lot less pilots were casualties compared to plane losses.
IJNAF casualties today were 15x KIA and 24xWIA with none missing.

Status: offline 		You are doing well in the air for April 1944. Usually the Allied side has downed more IJ planes by that time but you are a little ahead there. He seems to fly into CAP traps too much.

I am curious why you post things like the tally of pilot kills from the Ops report. I can't think of anything it would teach me or any reason to find it interesting. I know it is easy to just copy the Ops report and include it in the post but it just makes clutter that hides the stuff that may be useful/interesting, IMO. Comments?

I just post what I keep as my notes from each turn.
The process of editing the combat and ops reports usually takes me about 10mins or so per turn, so it helps prompt things I need to do when entering orders.
I mostly keep the record of pilot kills because I am interested to see if new aces are created and how the top aces are going against each other.
I usually also take more than one screenshot each turn but tend to only upload what I think is the most interesting one.

I have been holding fighter pilots in training units until they have 70/70 experience/air skill until this battle, as the Marianas based units were being used for various stages of training and I wanted to see how the pilots went in their various states of readiness.
I found it interesting that even some of the pilots with experience in the 40s still got a kill or two.

For the IJN fighter pilots in this game, if a new ace is created in a land based unit that usually indicates the pilot has made it to 81+ experience so it prompts me to check and transfer that pilot to CV duty.
There is plenty from the ops report that I do delete, like the dozens of ASW aircraft contacts that don't result in a reported hit.

This rookie unit did well with 18 kills between them today and no casualties.

Aka, small Air Support within 1 aircraft transfer range, to move new air units around the map.
If yes, would you mind sharing their locations?
That is the next little step I am going to take/plan. Always good to have something to compare to!

I'm a card carrying member of the No AKV Club.
I sometimes use drop tanks for the aircraft with shorter legs.
I try to check weather at each base and avoid flying into heavy rain or thunderstorms as that seems to be a high chance at an ops loss.

Yokosuka - Iwo Jima - Marianas - Truk - Rabaul is my main ferry route.
I developed Ponape and Kusaie as the air bridge to the Marshalls but the far bank of that bridge has been blown now.

I've read about IJAAF units losing large numbers of rookie pilots on ferry flights in SEAF but the most I've lost is one plane/pilot per ferry hop. I just read this a few days ago about 615 Sqn, RAF. Imagine if this happened in the game:

It returned to operations on the Burma front in November but was recalled to India again, for defensive duties in August 1944. The transfer, from Palel to Biagachi, near Calcutta was scheduled for 10 August. Despite a favourable weather forecast, the squadron encountered a violent monsoon storm en route. Eight of the 16 aircraft, including that of the commanding officer, Squadron Leader Dave McCormack, DFC, were lost.
