Status: offline 		I noticed lots of Allied recon over Chiang Mai which I was using as a Frances training base.
I moved the 100ish Frances out just in time.
100 Franks moved north from Bangkok to continue flying 100% CAP as advanced training units.
A single Lightning Sqn sweep was seen off then wave after wave of unescorted heavy bombers came in.
The Frank trainees (mostly 70 Air skill, 60s experience) did well but nearly all of them are now damaged and need repairs.
Two fresh Sentai will rotate in while they rail south to recover.
About 30 Allied heavies were lost to all causes to about 15 Franks.
The new Allied CIC seems to be picking one air op per turn and concentrating force on it

The USN DD Div near Milne Bay disappeared but I’ve left some Judy at Port Moresby and Buna (unspotted) in case they pop up again.

About 50 unescorted heavies then hit Cox’s Bazar airfield.

Sub laid mines at Lunga score a hit on a USN PT boat.

I’d forgotten about the second Nick-D NF Sentai so started to move it towards Burma in standard range ferry hops.

That said, how deep are your pools of experienced and trained pilots now?

You're deep into '44, and I can't overstress enough how bloody the air war can become...

Pools are still a bit shallow, but I’m coming up fast to the 1 May Pilot Training Review Board so will gather some numbers from that to report here.
Recently the 51, 52 and 56 Fighter Sentai have arrived and they are running basic training courses.

I check and adjust monthly the allocation of Sentai to the following:
1. Front line, skills and experience 70+ with all 81+ pilots still flying
2. Second line, skills 70 but experience 50-69. These units fly CAP100% range0 at large bases like Rangoon, Rabaul, Bangkok
3. Strafe Course. Training 100% sweep alt 100 range 0, to train strafe/def. Pilots graduate usually with 50ish experience.
4. Air Combat Course. Training 100% escort range 0.

Last month I changed a few Sentai from around the map from Front Line back to Second Line or Training missions.
I am still looking for a good balance between Front Line strength and pilot training throughput.

I feel like I have enough on the Front Lines now but am still trying to figure out patterns in how the new Allied CIC will use his air forces.
Based on the last few days of concentrated raids, I have adjusted to concentrate local CAP over a reduced number of key bases to let pilots and aircraft recover some fatigue.

The current plan is to try and spring some large LRCAP range 0 ambushes and sprinkle in a few Sweeps of non-base hexes just to keep the Allies honest.

Status: offline 		The Allies target 15th Army on the road between Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar today.
I will set a big LRCAP over them tomorrow as Allied ground movement is spotted advancing.
There are IJA radars in the hex and AA guns so that should help the LRCAP get some warning and altitude advantages.

Combined Fleet task forces started arriving in Japan at various major repair yards.
They will repair General wear and tear and a few of them will take 5/44 upgrades: 2x CV and 3x CA from memory.
Lots of subs also have a 5/44 upgrade that gives them radars, so they are all ordered home to get those radars asap.

Status: offline 		The Allies try again over 15th Army and the big LRCAP of 8x Sentai set to 50% LRCAP, range 0, claims its first victims!
I don’t know if severe storms helps the attacker or defender, or neither, but if the Allied CIC is paying attention he will have noticed that there are defensive radars in this hex. The scores for each round were as follows:
Round 1: Frank-R 6 – Spit Vc 0
Round 2: Frank-R 3 – Spit VIII 3 from the combat report, I sped up the replays as I figure this will be a busy day, so not sure what they would have indicated.
Round 3: Frank-R 1 – Spit VIII 1
Round 4: Frank-R 2 – Spit VIII 3 – the LRCAP is a bit fragmented now with arrivals in small packets seemingly at a bit of a disadvantage. If the defending pilots aren’t KIA they are bailing out over friendly territory.
Round 5: Frank-R 0 – P47D25 3 – the USAAF let the RAF do the hard yards then swoop in on the tired LRCAP. This could get a bit ugly from here.
Round 6: 22x P47D25 sweep but there are no defenders left to challenge them.
Round 7: 22x P47D2 unchallenged
Round 8: 22x P47D2 unchallenged
Round 9: 25x P47D2 unchallenged
Round 10: 3x P47D2 + 6xP47D25 unchallenged – then some more stragglers flights of 3
Round 13ish: 16x Spitfire VIII unchallenged
Round 14: 22x P47D25 unchallenged
Round 15: 22x P47D25 unchallenged

Total air losses today shown. 50x Franks. There are over 1000 in the pool so that makes about 20 days worth if this loss rate continues!
Take out the losses on the ground and it was fairly even in the Air-Air fight between Frank and the Spitfires.
A2A+Ops was a 30 to 30 draw with the RAF. Well played chaps.
The P47s didn’t have much left to shoot at, which is an ominous sign.

10 Liberators lost to 12 Nick-Ds, that’s not a bad trade. With the double point bonus that was a 20 to 12 win to the Night Fighters.

If only there was a way to stop the Allied 4E bombers smashing Franks on the ground…
I will need to spread the Franks out a bit onto satellite airfields.

Total pilot losses to all causes today were 16xWIA, 9xKIA.

Status: offline 		This is the victory point situation on 1 May 44, with numbers showing the change since 1 Apr 44.
With both sides scoring similar points each month the VP ratio is going to keep moving closer to 2:1 through 1944.
The game within the game now is to try and keep the VP ratio above 2 by 1 Jan 1945.

It looks like the Allies are advancing overland down the Arakan Coast and inland towards Imphal.
Allied firepower is going to wreck a few elite IJA Divisions over the next few months, but the plan is to conduct a fighting withdrawal to shorten IJA supply lines during the monsoon season.
As the IJA forces move backwards they will concentrate, but the Allies might have already massed enough force to start a steamroller effect.
Jungle terrain and the monsoon will be what the IJA look to for assistance.

The Combined Fleet are still thinking about a sortie into the Bay of Bengal, especially if the Allies attempt to force their way ashore south of Rangoon.

Otherwise the routine war of moving fuel/oil north and troops/supply south continues.

Status: offline 		More AAA including the 25mm ones at your Frank R bases, the 25mms in case the bombers try at a lower elevation. Try some fighters at 10% LRCAP over his airfields to increase his OPs losses. It does not need many for this, they do not have to be the best, and he can't sweep his own base so they won't be swept. This could also work at night. Long Range bombers at night might work, at least those could keep the Allies honest in regards to Night Fighters and his AA units.

E Yashiro arrives at Tokyo – Mikura class, 7th of 8 ships in the class. The first 6 are in 2x Divs of 3 ships each and are both escorting medium sized TK convoys. I like keeping ships of the same class together so E Yashiro will wait about 20 days until E Kusagaki arrives then they will both move to Manila together to join the other Mikuras.
TK Taigyo Maru arrives at Nagasaki/Sasebo – Type 2 TL. I have a small surplus of tankers now with the current Tanker convoys keeping up with production and shipping both oil and fuel home before it can stockpile. The excess TKs are generally waiting at Manila so that they are able to replace any losses.
I’ve also started to run 2x large resource convoys from Singapore (1.4 million resources) to Manila and 2 more from Soerabaja (350k resources) to Manila. When the Allies start to threaten those southern ports the large resource convoys will then focus on moving the stockpile from Manila (currently 1.7 million resources). I just noticed that Balikpapan has a 500k resource stockpile, thanks to Bandjermasin having 59(1) resource production. Once the Soerabaja resource stockpile is reduced 1 of the 2 convoys on that route will start moving the Balikpapan resources.

CVEs spotted in NORPAC.
There are no IJA or IJN ground forces in the Aleutians anymore so the only scouts up here are Glen subs.
With the Combined Fleet almost fully repaired it wouldn't take them long to respond to a half-hearted Allied advance in NORPAC.
I'd have to know where the USN CVs are first though.

It is now 20 May 44 in game, but I’ve just had a chance to review the IJAAF fighter training program rather than edit the last week of combat reports.
Fighter Sentai are sorted here by experience level.
11th Sentai has the most kills with 900, followed by 1st Sentai with 774, then 64th Sentai with 539.
77th Sentai plus its 2x dets have 775 kills between them.

18x front line Sentai – as the Frank-R can’t match P47s for altitude, I might reduce this by a few.

4x OTU are flying CAP 100 – I need a few more of these to keep the flow of pilots building their experience from 50 to 70

25x training Sentai, mostly training Air skill as I am using Nick Force to train strafe skill.
There are still a few too many Sentai flying Air skill, so some of the higher experience ones are now training strafe.
204th Sentai will finish the current Air skills course and then change over to Strafe course.

Status: offline 		9x FB units are flying night CAP, mostly in Burma.
That leave 14x units flying Strafe training, but some are Chutai.
That’s why a few more fighter units need to fly Strafe training to keep the throughput of trainees up.
I need to get the 40+ experience pilots into their Strafe courses then move the 50+ and 60+ pilots into CAP100% Sentai to get them to 70+

Pilot reserves are shown with marks roughly where the 50/60/70 experience levels change.
Most of the 60s experience pilots are WIA, so there are probably only about 250 fully trained 70+ experience IJAAF fighter pilots in reserve.

Status: offline 		Big news after the B29-1s made an appearance over Burma on 19 May 44, they tried a night strike against Magwe Oil on 21 May 44.
5th Sentai Nick-Ds shot one down and damaged a few more, with the AA gunners claiming another one. They are the first 2x B29 losses.
The A2A victory wasn't an outright kill, but there was a report of a critical hit that could have been the one credited.
There were about 5 hits in total on Magwe Oil which won't be repaired.
Every drop of the black stuff that can be withdrawn from Burma will be a bonus from this point.

The big attack near Cox’s Bazar.
Some of these Allied units are very new arrivals so they won’t have field forts yet, so they could be the ones that took casualties.

IJA 20th Div took the brunt of the attack. 1st Tank Div and one of the IJA Infantry Divs were in reserve.

82nd (WA) Div was zeroed. The combat report shows the equivalent of about 2x Allied Divisions trashed for the price of 1.
Not a bad trade, but this isn’t sustainable.
The decision to be made is whether to withdraw 1st Tank Div and leave the Infantry to their fate, or hold the hex at all costs.
Once this force crumbles there are a similar number of IJA Divisions spread along the coast, but in 1s and 2s per hex and not concentrated into a force that could block the advance.
