Thanks for the information. Interesting, my initial plan involves going down (after hitchhiking some of the static base forces along the SE China coast) Indochina/Luzon. I just cannot decide on the exact bases. Yours certainly look very different.

This rookie unit did well with 18 kills between them today and no casualties.

Good Job! Certainly a significant victory in the air at this stage of the war.
In my test runs on pilot training, I find the "golden period" of training to be when their XP<50. During this period, skill (Air/Def) increases are much faster than when their XP is >50. Perhaps to optimize similar training opportunities in the future, in the absence of fully ready pilots, you could consider using those doing CAP in 2nd tier bases (with XP>50, but already have 70 Air).

This type of thing happened for both sides....in-game it makes sense to just stage aircraft all the time and I agree AKVs are not that useful as a result, but that's why the AKVs existed IRL, and why the IJN CVE's were used almost exclusively for transporting aircraft IRL

One area that the game doesn't match RL, but that's probably OK

Ssshhhhh . . . iiiittttt happens.

quote:

Marine Fighting Squadron 422 (VMF-422) was a Vought F4U Corsair squadron in the United States Marine Corps. The squadron, also known as the "Flying Buccaneers", fought in World War II but is perhaps best known for its role in the worst accident in naval aviation history when 22 of the squadron's 23 aircraft were lost flying through a typhoon on January 25, 1944. After being reconstituted, the squadron participated in the Battle of Okinawa. VMF-422 was decommissioned on April 7, 1947. Since that date, no other Marine Corps squadron has carried the lineage and honors of VMF-422.[2]
.
.
.
On April 26, 1945, VMF-422 departed the Central Pacific bound for Okinawa. The ground crew arrived at Ie Shima on May 7 with the aircraft in trace by an additional couple of weeks.[22] During its first combat flights over Okinawa on May 25, the squadron was credited with shooting down five Japanese aircraft.[22][2] On June 29, Capt DeBlanc led a large formation of Corsairs from multiple squadrons against targets on Ishigaki Island. En route to the target four of the formation's Corsairs exploded in the sky because bomb safety wires had worked loose, thus arming the bombs in flight.[22] The squadron lost ten aircraft during the Battle of Okinawa.[22] During the entirety of the Okinawa Campaign the squadron was credited with 15 Japanese planes shot down.[24]

I set some limits on staging my aircraft:
They must be of a type that I have adequate replacements for so that Ops losses while staging can be replaced.

The weather at the landing end of the leg must be fairly good - no worse than light rain or overcast.

Weather at the departure AF must not be "severe storms" or "thunderstorms".

And the distance to be flown on each leg must be no more than 75% of the transfer range of the aircraft unless the transfer is an emergency (like putting TBs in range of enemy BBs or CVs).

I also consider the aircraft and pilot fatigue if the transfer involves multiple legs. Weather usually makes sure they get enough time on the ground to recover and repair.

I do make use of AKVs and xAKs to transfer aircraft long distances if the enemy is unlikely to intercept the ships. But I do not convert any xAKs to AKVs on the Allied side.

An emissary has arrived on behalf of the Chairman of the Combined Allied Chiefs of Staff.
Due to changed circumstances, nothing sinister, the Allies won't be able to return regular turns for the foreseeable future.
Despite the Allies now having the initiative, the current Allied CIC would be more comfortable conceding the game.

CrackSabbath and I have done what must have been close to a turn a day on average.
He's been a great opponent for me in my first PBEM, spinning regular turns, rolling with the punches and keeping me guessing (often incorrectly).
I've really enjoyed it and appreciate the time and effort he's put in to making the game a big challenge.
Some weeks we've managed to get about 10 turns done by doing a morning and evening turn each on weekends, with the timezone difference helping with that. This is despite neither of us thinking we'd be able to do a turn a day when this game first started.
I've gotten into the habit of doing "tactical" orders to keep the turn rate up during the week, with weekend turns used to check a few things in more detail, but not worrying about checking everything every turn.

I could end the game here, and avoid the increasing pain of 1944+ as Japan, or if a substitute Allied CIC can be found they could take over from CrackSabbath with the Allies in a fairly strong position going into mid-1944.
It would be great to find someone who wants to take over as the Allied Chief, as I want to see how I can go at causing delay and conducting defensive operations. The turns should also get quicker for me as the perimeter shrinks, and I'd be happy to provide an opportunity for someone to roll the Soviet Tank Armies forward in 1945.
If anyone is interested in conducting some due diligence on the current Allied situation you could ping me a message, or send a message to CrackSabbath directly.

This image provides the current strategic overview.
The Allies have recently liberated Chittagong so are close to holding all bases in India.
They also hold all bases in Australia apart from a few dots along the NW Australian coast.
There is increasing Allied activity in all of SOPAC, CENPAC and NORPAC.
The "arsenal of democracy" should be kicking in by now and the Allies are broadly on schedule as per the historical advance through CENPAC, threatening the Marianas already.

Just a reminder that this has been a game with no house rules, which has resulted in huge Armies facing each other in India.
I'd be happy to discuss details for anyone that wants to take the Allied side on, eg: I still use Glens on submarines.
I am not going to demand any house rules on the Allies like 4E bombing heights or limits on night bombing.

If the game does go into an indefinite pause I will need to think seriously about what I want for my next game.
I am keen to play as Allies one day, but am also thinking about another IJ game with "PP to move outside of theatre" and player defined upgrades OFF. That would be a completely different game to this one.

Such things could be difficult to manage in the game.

IRL air forces lost more pilots to op losses than combat. IIRC I read somewhere they called it 'wasteage'. Kinda cold.

Good news subscribers and casual readers, the Allies have appointed a new CIC.
Game terms (no house rules) have been offered and accepted, so are now legally binding.
Standing by for heavy bombers at 100’.

The new Chief might take a few days to click through each theatre, then we should be back close to a turn a day.

Parallel universe CENPAC CV rumble - 11/23/2021 9:48:47 AM

To give CrackSabbath an opportunity to go out with a bang, I agreed to a parallel universe CENPAC CV rumble.
The rules were knives and chains only, no guns.
That translated to aircraft carriers and surface combat ships only, no submarines.

I am not going to post any details other than this, as the Combined Fleet played like the Letterkenny Irish...
Day 1 was a disaster with the IJN alpha strike going in unescorted, compared to textbook play by the Allies.
The result was about 10-1 in carriers that day. CPO Sakai diverted ashore with +1 kill to his tally.

Day 2 saw the IJN surface ships fix bayonets and charge, only to finish the turn just outside reaction range, so the CAs got crunched by USN air strikes.
The Yamato Div was unspotted so survived for day 3, but the final charge missed by 2 hexes and there was no reaction...

It was a disaster of epic proportions for the IJN which was not helped by the day 1 display.
A few tactics will be tweaked when the war backtracks about 10 days and heads off on a tangent.

Wait - are you saying you did this as an 'aside' contest-for-fun that will not be part of the game your new opponent has agreed to take on? Or is it included in the resumed game?

The Allies have reported that they have finished air orders with land and sea to go.
To fill in time, apart from masterminding the self-destruction of the Combined Fleet, I started planning aircraft production for a PDU off game.
I’ll have to put that on ice and get my head back into this game.

IJA infantry reinforcements are starting to arrive in good numbers but they are mostly low experience, so need some time to sit and train before they can help delay the Allies.
There are enough PP to buy out a front line Div from Japan, but I might keep 1500 PP on reserve in case of emergency.

Hi Gang,

Since I'm now officially exited from the game, I thought I'd pop in and publicly congratulate Jamie on his outstanding auto-victory , and thank him for a fun campaign. He kept me on my toes, and then some for the whole match, and I'm glad he's found someone to keep it going. He's a class act through and through.

I'll follow the campaign going forward, but won't post again lest I inadvertently let some intel slip.

Regarding the non-canon, just for fun CV rumble, I'll say only this: FERDA!

Cheers,

Mike (aka Crack Sabbath).

Interesting developments here on the India-Burma border, with what looks like the new CIC ordering some withdrawals from the jungle rough terrain.
It will take a few weeks to see if these are feints or real moves, but it could be an early indication that the focus of the Allied advance will be somewhere else, perhaps via amphibious means…

Hundreds of Spitfires and P47s sweep Cox's Bazar.
A small LRCAP challenged the first raid then let them have the sky.

A USN DD Div ended one hex from Milne Bay but I had just moved the D4Y4s back to Rabaul the day before.
Missed opportunity...

Apart from Allied land forces moving around on the India-Burma border, it also looks like a general reshuffle of USN submarine patrol sectors is happening.
