Since they are immolilized as well - makes these units um.. rather special.

Weapons 116 and 117 are both Whizbangs (US army Oob)

Now the first weapon has 24 range the second 224 - so i gues 224 is correct.

However there is accuracy 4 in 117 and 60 in the armour value of weapon 116.

Any clues or explenations in case I've missed something?

Stuart or Glenn, may have a better more detailed answer for you. What I recall about this was that it had to do with the weight of the rocket, time period, and later improvements to the 7.2 rocket.

Weapon 116 should be the early class of this weapon and weapon 117 - the improved weapon with longer range.

Here is info from a web site: http://users.belgacom.net/artillery/artillerie/5419.html

"While the US 4.5-Inch were fired indirectly like their Russian or German counterparts, the much larger 7.2-Inch model was a short range demolition weapon (one kilometer maximum) and used in direct fire. There were several types of rocket launchers developped to fire them, most of them fitted upon turrets of Sherman."

This quote helps explain why weapon 116 range was short. Weapon 117 would be used, most likely for Navel Units, and post WW II era.

Also look at this web site for the spec's:

http://www.752ndtank.com/RocketTanks.html

7.2 Inch T40 Rocket Launcher:

Weight of Launcher: 5,500 lbs empty, 6,700 lbs fully loaded
Tubes: (20) 90-inch tubes, 2 rows of 10
Tube Material: Sheet steel
Life of Tubes: Indefinite
Firing Method: Electrical, single-shot or ripple fire
Maximum Firing Rate: 20 rounds in 10 seconds (ripple fire)
Muzzle Velocity: 160 feet per second
Maximum Range: 230 Yards
Effective Range: Typically 60-75 Yards
Rocket Type: 7.2 Inch High Explosive Rocket T37 with circular fins
Rocket Dimensions: 61 lbs, 35 inches long
Explosive Charge: 32 lbs of C2 plastic explosive
Laying on Target: By turret gun sight
Traverse and Elevation: Traverse by turret, elevation by main gun
Main Gun Operation: Can be fired with launcher installed
Jettison Capability: Hydraulically jettisoned in seconds
Armor Plating: Will divert up to .30 caliber bullet

Hope this helps..

The range of the rocket is definitely correct- it was very short and not well liked or oft-used.
The speed, on the other hand, is definitely wrong. These units should have the same speed as a sherman tank or slightly less.

A range of 6 is cutting it short for tactical use. I guess then its used lika the British AWRE engineering tanks to blow up minefields and fortifications. 6 Hexes would be about 300yards though!

Still if it could move, Its got a decent ammo supply - using indirect fire it could give the hun a nasty surprise. This is good :)

(And since it has a minumu range when firing indirect - you get about a 3 hex circle around your launcher in which to fire - with lovely heavy rocket deviation as well.) Ah well - I love a challenge. Playing the US mostly, I need all the unit variation I can get. It's not often we get new toys in the US army.

It would be good if the calliope and whizbang tanks kept their guns as they do in the pictures and apparently also in actual service. - Been wondering about that for ever.

Effective range 60-70yards damn.. Even worse than in the game.

Thanks for the info. much appreciated.

In early versions of the OOB, the main gun was included but this led to problems which forced the OOB team to place the calliope into the offboard artillery. This too was not much use, given the range and now the calliope is back onboard with rockets only but with that speed of zero. A stupid oversight.

Easy enough to miss I imagine, there is a whole lot of data in those oob's.

I can just imagine bug hunting them with the deadline of a version release breathing down my neck.. *shudder*
