RUPD3658 -> Possibly my Midway (8/23/2006 5:44:23 AM)

Now you will see whay it was so important to sink the Nepal. I was afraid it would get too close and spoil my suprize.

This is my long planned offensive. The KB pulls up off of Perth after a sprint at full speed, shuts down the air filed with 2 days of air attack, then spends 3-4 days wrecking the Industry before running away.

Everything went well at first. I did not get spotted on the way in but the DDs decided to top off (eventhough ordered not to refuel) and the KB did not arrive until day 2. The strike hit the runway 125 times and the air base 25 times. The recon showes that the base is not shut down (37 damage) and worse yet it has started to rain.

My only hope is that the 4E bombers that will transit the whole width of OZ will suffer so much damage/fatigue flying in the rain to a damaged base that they don't destroy the KB come dawn. I am too close to even try running away. I am committed to success or death.

I will not sleep well tonight.

RUPD3658 -> The Court Martial of Nagumo (8/24/2006 6:08:10 AM)

Excerpts from the trial:

Judge: So admiral, why was Perth chosen as a target?

Nagumo: We needed to rack up some points before going on the defensive. Getting within 14 hexes of any Allied base could be disastrous due to the 4E bombers. Perth was the only logical choice because:

1. It was likely lightly defended.
2. It could not be supported by other bases.
3. There were a ton of industrial targets that could yield 1500-2000 points.

Judge: So what were risks?

Nagumo: The range to the target was the first major obstacle. This was overcome be prepositioning oilers at the rendezvous point just outside of patrol aircraft range.

The second fear was that the Allied CVs would respond from Sydney during the air strikes on the industry and catch the KB off guard. To defend against this 30 subs were sent out to act as early warning pickets.

The last fear was that the KB would be spotted enroute and surprise lost. This almost happened when the DD Napier wandered within a few hexes of the rendezvous point and had to be sunk.

Judge: So how was the plan to be carried out?

Nagumo: Once the subs and oilers were in position, the KB would top off at the redezvous point. Since the CVEs were slower they would be detached into a second TF while the faster CVs ran at full speed to the target arriving at first light. They would launch 2 days of strikes against the air field with the CVEs joining in on the second day. The escorting CAs would be used if needed to insure that the airfield was shut down so that no new aircraft could interfere. The KB would then attack the Hi, Oil, and Resources for 2 days and then leave. If the Allied CVs were not spotted the oilers would come down and refuel the KB and they would stay on station as long as they has missions and Perth was shut down.

Judge: So what went wrong?

Nagumo: The oilers did not top off the KB saying that we had enough fuel. Then during the sprint to the target a few DDs needed to be topped off and we arrived a day late and in the rain. The strikes failed to shut down the airfield. Luckily the B-24s were not in Australia or we would have been decimated. We were too close to run so I decided to stay but I sent the 3 CAs in to bombard. They hit a mine field that was not expected and the Atago was seriously damaged so the other 2 CAs broke off and headed for home.

Judge: Were any further strikes launched?

Nagumo: We stayed for 2 days but due to rain we could not launch any further strikes. As we were low on fuel we had to make a run for it after this. We met up with the tankers and escaped.

Judge: What were the results of the operation?

Nagumo: we lost 2 subs,an AV, and 8 planes. We destroyed 6-8 Allied planes on the ground and sank the DD Napier.

Judge: Admiral, here is your sword. You know what to do.

KDonovan -> Karachi/Malir advice (8/28/2006 7:20:42 PM)

anyone think its a better idea to most of my troops out of Karachi to Malir in order to avoid the naval bombardments??...and have my last stand at Malir. I know i'll probably lose all of India..but i just want to prolong the inevitable. Any thoughts??

PS - both are at level nine forts

RUPD3658 -> RE: Karachi/Malir advice (8/29/2006 2:58:59 AM)

Sig Int operators must be asleep if he is even asking this question. [:D]

Last stand at Malir means no supplies from Karachi and a 3X rather than a 4X Multiplier. Also, don't forget I can go around the river and attack from the rear. Better to endure the bombardments.

no supplies from Karachi wouldn't be that much of a big deal. By moving all my forces to Malir, i will be able to stockpile some 150,000+ supplies at that base. That should be able to last me quite awhile.

I'm leaning towards staying in Karachi though, i've been keeping a closer eye on the results of your bombardments, and its only the Engineers and Support troops that are really suffering. The infantry squads are pretty much intact

quote:

Let me guess, this is a stock game?

haha...i think i know what you are implying. Stock definitely has its flaw's, and my next game will definitely be CHS. But i'm enjoying this current game immensly as Tom is a great guy and a great oppenant. Also i'm learning more and more about the game's mechanics which will make future games even more enjoyable. So i don't mind having to battle it out in Karachi, no matter how unrealistic it may seem

I guess any cruise by KB off the east coast of Oz is now off. [:D][:D]
Since this is a stock game, his supply of heavy bombers is large. I guess the strategy of Japan just got modified for that part of the world. [X(]

What are the experience levels of your CA/BB's that have been bombarding Karachi back to the Stone Age??

niceguy2005 -> RE: Karachi/Malir advice (8/29/2006 8:30:57 PM)

Sorry, I have not been keeping up with this AAR, but where on earth is the RN? with all those DDs just sitting off Karachi you could do a lot with a few well placed CL raids.

RUPD3658 -> RE: Karachi/Malir advice (8/29/2006 10:07:25 PM)

All of the RN's DDs are on the bottom of the Indian Ocean. Those that were not sunk were withdrawn to England. The rest of the RN is hunkering down in OZ.

Since Kenny lost all but 2 of his AOs the distance is too great to sortie all the way to India.

I wish he would try since I have AVs and Glen carring subs on picket duty just waiting to call in the KB. It is all the KB can do since the 4E bombers will sink it if it gets within 14 hexes of a base.

RUPD3658 -> RE: Karachi/Malir advice (8/30/2006 3:57:09 AM)

My raid on Perth was foiled by rain but Kenny gets 4 days of clear weather and plasters PM. 155 planes lost on the ground.[:@]

Strange. 2nd day and the number of troops and the AV goes up yet the guns are going down indicating that troops are starving.

RUPD3658 -> RE: Karachi/Malir advice (8/31/2006 5:41:24 AM)

Another unit at Chungking has starved to death. Only 134 more to go. The suprizing thing is that the AV continues to go up and Kenny tells me that the supplies are growing.
