BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 4:28:36 AM)

Terminus found 3 of my British battleships in Kendari with his smaller carrier TF. See below. I will post damage stats for the ships in Kendari. The damage was minimal. There were P40's on CAP and they did a good job of breaking up the strike. He is going to keep coming. Do I try and run or stay put under whatever CAP I can bring to the hex. I also have about 4 squadrons of Hudsons I could move in and go for a naval strike. Anyone have any opinions?

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 4:35:34 AM)

As can be seen, the bombs bounced off. I can run at 23 knots, but he can catch me. Am I better to stay put?

[image]local://upfiles/12663/7FC58EF88FE5482CA16DF35E651A5875.jpg[/image]

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 5:04:23 AM)

Ok here is the map. Those carriers can catch me. I could bring in about 25 Hudsons and 15 Banshees and try a naval stike. I can also bring in 9 more P40s plus I have 18 in the pool. Some of those would probably repair and be ready for tomorroes ops.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 5:25:01 AM)

You could just disband. He wont do much with port strikes, if he tries.

Failing that, I think you could run for Ambonia. At full speed, and at slightly diverging vectors I think you could make it. If you want to be really cold blooded, you could throw a transport TF in his path. That will probably dilute his strike force.

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 5:32:07 AM)

I can bring in 9 more P40s from Macassar. I could bring in about 15 Dutch fighters. Also how fast would P40s repair? I have 18 in the pool.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 5:38:33 AM)

The trouble with that is that at this juncture, your CAP wont stop him. You can hope to break them up a bit, but after that its between you and the gods you pray to.

Also, in my experience against Faber, the Huds probably wont launch. And if they do, their 250lb bombs stand very little chance to put his flight decks out of order. Great against merchies, but pitiful against warships.

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 5:44:32 AM)

Ah! Had not thought of that.[sm=nono.gif] I have some A24 Banshees. Maybe I could use them?

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 5:45:46 AM)

By the way, according to my scouts it is 3CVL and 1 CV plus escorts.

niceguy2005 -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 5:45:50 AM)

What are Banshees?

I think you have more than enough of a lead on him to get away. If I were you I would be thrilled at the prospect of him coming near northern oz with a small carrier force.

I would probably try to take a shot at him with Hudsons, but they probably won't fly unless you have escorts that can make it to the target also. Hudsons wont go up against carrier cap unescorted, usually.

How many carriers does he have? Any idea why the carriers are there? Is it a raid or an invasion. If an invasion you might be able to break up your surface force into multiple small TFs and double back trying to catch the enemy transports. That's a pretty aggresive tactic.

Army SBDs IIRC.

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 5:49:43 AM)

See above post. In the last game my battleships were down here and ambushed a couple of invasion TFs. I think I was too predictable. He came looking for BBs. Also there is ahoard of merchant ships just to the east. You can see them on my map. I think he is also after them.

The Banshees are part of the Mare Bellum mod. They are good at killing ships.

Yeah. That sounds like a bit more serious than the CVE junk you see in stock. Probably have airgroups in the 70s too. I have become convinced that the only reason the Indomitable survived in my game is because aside from the Shoho, his other two CVEs had crap XP airgroups.

Those probably won't fly against strong cap either without strong escort.

After looking at the map this must be a raid. He's trying to catch your warships in the Java Sea. Bend like the reeds in the wind my young padawan. [:D]

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/19/2006 5:52:47 AM)

Okay, I am going to run, at full speed they do 4/4. But right now I am going to bed. Thank you gentlemen.

Army? Probably not. They do not look favorably upon taking risks.

Well, you can always line the path of the carrier TF with planes and hope something flies. You could get lucky. Even a bomb hit or two could lay a carrier up in a repair yard for a while.

Its sort of like in the movies when the bad guys rob a bank and all the townspeople line up to shoot at them as they ride away. Sometimes they get lucky and wing one or two.

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/20/2006 5:20:13 AM)

Now my next question is; which way do I run. Do I try and outwit him and go straight west on the map or straight east? I do not think I want to make for Darwin.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/20/2006 5:22:36 AM)

I would run for Ambonia. Rounding the bend of Sulawesi should put him off his stride a bit.

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/20/2006 5:24:10 AM)

Per my Reconnasance, I think those carriers are the Shokaku, Zuikaku, Zuiho and Ryujo. That means top task force speed is 5/5 while mine is 4/4.

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/21/2006 12:52:52 PM)

Okay. Let m go make a couple of screen shots. I'll be right back.[:)]

BrucePowers -> RE: Dec 19, 1942 Turn (10/21/2006 12:59:25 PM)

The key point for today is that the battleships got away for now. With the carriers this far south I am going to run 2 of them north to Batavia to spring an ambush when the Bombarbment TF comes a calling.

The noose is starting to tighten in the Phillipines and Malaya. I have managed to get supply into Singapore.

The A-24s in the Phillipines are starting to make a real nuisance of themseles.

Kavieng has fallen and I need to consider evacing the Rabaul units to Port Moresby where they will be more useful.[
