It's Spring of 1945 and there are new breezes blowing from the East and West toward Germany. And what would Spring be without the sound of Russian tanks and artillery barrages! Unfortunately, a prepatory air attack doesn't go so well and the subsequent ground attack also fails to meet expectations. But new reinforcements are dispatched to the front and to Siberia.

Meanwhile, the US pins its hopes on a new weapon. A massive air battle develops over Western Germany and "the bomb" is dropped with the hopes of ending the war. Although German industry is dealt a severe blow, bomber losses from AA are high. Allied leaders publicly promise a swift end to the war, but privately express some doubts.....

Axis Summer45

Tactical nukes fall all over W Germany.
Hitler heads for the bunker last heard mutter "now where did I put that syinide?"

WA have pulled out of the Med.
Italy appears to be able to relax a little bit, so in celebration some of the troops packed up their beach Blankets and headed for the South of France to spend the rest of the summer.

Yougo, Hungary, and Southern France have all been brought back into the Axis Family [;)]

Major air battles developed in the North Sea as the Luftwafe try to flex there shrinking muscles. A couple of the nuke carying aircraft are given a nice return blow.

Millians of American Subs in the Pacific.
WA Carriers are known to be on the East Side of Africa on there way to play in the South Pacific.

Summer of '45 sees little progress in Europe - although the Luftwaffe is reduced and Czechoslovakia is liberated. In the East, Soviet forces do launch an inconclusive counterattack against the Japanese interlopers.

Axis Fall45

Germany tries to hold, buying time for the inevitable.

I need to report a wonderfull piece of luck that I noticed in the playback that happened to be in my favor. Milita stationed in Hungary armed with only molotov cockatials and 'sticky bombs' for anti-armor was able to damage a group of the all powerfull Soviet T-34s sending them back to factorys most likely in Moscow.

Japan Fall45

Japan has taken the US sub fleet threat very very seriously and has devoted much to the hunting and killing of US subs which currently pose the biggest threat to Japan just rolling over and surrendering without a real fight.

This screenshot of the current forces shows this season to be effective in cutting the number of subs in the Pacific to an acceptable level.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (11/26/2007 5:50:47 AM)

Allied strategy versus Germany has devolved into a "sledgehammer" strategy. Just keep hitting them. In the East, the Soviets attrition the Germans.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (11/26/2007 5:52:35 AM)

But that is it for 1945 and the Allies have very little time left. Allied high command is confident that despite some questionable decisions Germany will be liquidated. But as for Japan - who can say? The Allied sub threat was easily vanquished (as I expected given the Japanese tech although I expected to do a bit better than I did). Sea routes are just beginning to be reestablished, and the Reds are stymied. China also attacked the last turn (not shown) and gained a little ground but is probably spent for the time being.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (11/29/2007 5:30:59 AM)

Winter of '46. The Allies have gotten into position for what they hope to be a successful Spring offensive against Germany (not shown). But the big news is that India is at last resupplied and the Brits go on the offensive in the area.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (12/2/2007 7:33:25 PM)

After positioning in Czechoslovakia last turn, the Soviets are poised to take Germany. Stalin orders an offensive against Berlin, which succeeds on about an 85% chance (after a preparatory bombardment).

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (12/2/2007 7:36:08 PM)

In the Far East, the Allies attempt to put maximum pressure on Japan. Singapore is taken (I probably should have taken a screenie) and airforces are moved forward. But Japan is strong, and the US is tiring of war. Congress has passed several resolutions aimed at forcing Truman to negotiate with Japan for an end to the war. Most believe that the war will end in some manner by Fall of '46. [;)]

Axis Summer46

Well My Germans finally gave up the good fight.
They just could not stand up to all that SU artillary any longer.
I lost count of the bombard '1 n 2' and auto hits Russia got in ther 28 chances to fire before my Germans could fire back. By the time we got to roll the army was surpressed into submission.

Now it is Japans turn to feel Allied heat.
There does seem to be a bit of a bug that after Germany surrendered so did FOW on the map.
Japan has tried to position itself to hold onto the required 10 PPs by placing a blocking force in Siberia and Floating Armada in the Indian Ocean. (se SS)

Can we hold against a excellent player like Forwarn??

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (12/9/2007 4:59:05 AM)

Summer of '46. No screenies as the Allies have no victory to report. We did have a plan with something better than a 50-50 shot at finally taking out Japan. But it was not in the cards. One more turn, and the Allies have already commenced peace talks with Japan in Switzerland. It looks like we are going to have to drop the demand of unconditional surrender. [:@]

MrQuiet -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (12/9/2007 6:23:52 PM)

Japan Fall 1946

Well, here we are at the final turn against the toughest opponent I have encountered in AWD.
My strategy is pretty much the same as the previous turn, to try and hold on to the required 10 pps.
Had to shift forces in Siberia due to Forwarn moving a strong force in Mongolia threatning Manchuria.

Another US sub was hunted and exterminated leaving a grand total of 1 left (although it is in striking range and will no doubt be used this turn)

As I had expected the entire WA airforce has been shipped to India (se SS) to try and clear a route for the Allied Navy into Japans territorial Waters. If you look closely you will notice a stranded Allied Airfield in Maylaya, they burned there last gallon of fuel last turn and I am trieing my damdest to keep them from being supplied this turn by sea or air.

Ceylon is to provide opfire on any shipping and my floating armada is to provide opfire on any air resupply.

Can we hold and keep the nukes away from Japan?
The fate of the Japaneese people depend on it[sm=00000924.gif]

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (12/10/2007 2:12:22 AM)

And the game comes to an end. Japanese might proves too much to overcome in '46. Allied war leaders urged continuance of the war until '47, but people have had enough of war. A negotiated peace leaves Japan with a mandate over the former Dutch colonies and the oil of the East Indies, its main objective for war. The game ends in an Axis substantive victory thanks to a 1-level shift in favor of the Allies for keeping the Axis below its watermarks.

Forwarn45 -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (12/10/2007 2:20:28 AM)

Congrats to MrQuiet on a game well played. [&o] A few thoughts on this one. The Allies' containment strategy achieved results in the early war - and the Allies were in a good position until about '43. But things began to unravel when the Japanese pushed the Allies from the Indian Ocean. MrQuiet's well-timed uboat (with help from the Japanese sub fleet) offensive subsequently took down the Allied transport chain. The other key event was the Japanese invasion of Siberia - my Russians left it pretty much undefended in the early war. I don't think that's a bad strategy as an early-Japanese invasion puts the Japanese in danger from the abomb and there is some time to regain lost territory. But come '44, the Russians should have started to garrison the area. Without much other means of putting pressure on Japan, the Japanese had enough to keep the Russians at bay. I think this game (like my prior game with Kondor), confirms the Axis shouldn't abandon hope. In retrospect, the Allies needed to put a bit more emphasis on ASW and the navy (I actually disbanded some damaged ships for extra resources in a very short-sighted manner). I could have delayed developing the a-bomb a bit more. Timing is important for the Allies, and it is possible to throw them enough off balance to make the game competitive in the late game.

MrQuiet -> RE: 1 vs 1 Round3 MrQuiet vs Forwarn45 (12/10/2007 3:31:05 AM)

Thanks for the compliments Forwarn. You played very well and I hope you play less well in our rematch (unlikely).
One unusual advantage I was gifted that must have made a big difference was Spain joining Germany and closing the Western Med. That really helped protect Italy which actually outlasted Germany. Spain built nothing but artillary 99% of the time and I still was no match for Soviet Art numbers. With all the Russian Artillary I was very surprised to see Germany last as long as it did.

I am glad to hear that the 112 transport fleets I sunk did have some effect on the Allied war effort. Wtih FOW it just does not really appear that way to the Axis. The bomb was built a year before history and Allied units just kept on showing up all over.

I also think your Germany first strat (or more like Germany only at first) allowed Japan to grow her economy unmolested and get very strong late war compared to history. One of my biggest mistakes was not getting to a point where I could comfortably rebuild to a nice high water mark, like you said, my Germans were contianed pretty early and instead of pushing hard I tried to conserve my forces for the inevitable.

I really thought the USA build up of 4/4 subs combined with nukes was going to be my death. Luckily things went pretty well for Japans ASW efforts.
I am now afraid you learned to much this game and I have no chance at all next game.

-MrQ
