herwin -> Failure to Fly (7/25/2007 4:46:51 PM)

I've had the 5th carrier division sitting a hex from Wake for the last three turns with the squadrons tasked to hit Wake hard. The dates are Dec 9, 10, and 11, 1941. Plenty of missions saved up. Wake has five F4F3s on its airstrip. Nothing has been flying. Nothing for three turns. Have I found myself in never-never land? Has the game engine gone off the tracks?

spence -> RE: Failure to Fly (7/25/2007 4:48:59 PM)

The boys are still hung over from celebrating their success at PH.

We're playing the War Plan Orange limited war rules. I didn't hit Pearl (because that triggers total war).

Lots of things can go wrong A common failure is to not setting the air mission of individual units correctly.

Otherwise, if you can send screen shots that might help.

Hmmm - only thing i don't see is the individual ship to check sorties, but you said you had plenty of missions saved up.

Sometimes the program balks for some reason, and the only thing i can think to suggest is to reset the orders. Try setting to "Naval Attack" with secondary missions to attack Midway.

The TF screen and the Soryu details window both show 100% of max sorties available.

I would suggest running some recon missions. Raise the DL of Wake and your aircraft might attack.

Well, I do have troops on the ground there. This is getting really weird.

I've posted the following pws files to my witp site:
1. C.pws--the combat replay
2. A.pws--the complete turn before replay
3. J0.pws--the Japanese side before the Allied moves were entered.
4. J1.pws--the Japanese side for the next turn.

The Japanese password is combomod. (I trust my opponent--we're beta testing his new mod.)

You'll need to have your opponent send me the PW (PM, or to rtrapasso @ gmail.com - no spaces). i've found that since people react negatively to someone contacting them out of the blue asking for PW, you need to initiate this.

Since this is a mod, there is a possibility of something strange happening with (possibly) pwhex files or the new database that messes things up... i had originally thought you were just playing by certain house rules.

Matrix doesn't really support mods, so i will not be downloading or installing it - i merely run the turn using standard installation.

Just having troops in the hex does not raise the DL very high. One of the most overlooked problems with getting aircraft to attack is getting the Detection Level of the target high enough.

i can maybe understand the ground attack not coming off, but they SHOULD hit the airfield, i think.

The point is - i am not sure you need a good DL to attack airfields... having a higher DL will make the attack more effective, of course.

dtravel -> RE: Failure to Fly (7/26/2007 10:40:56 PM)

You may not need a "good" DL, but to avoid the chance of not flying you need a DL higher than you get from just having friendly LCUs in the hex.  I have seen numerous occasions where just flying a single recon mission over the target will suddenly unleash all the other aircraft that have that base targeted but haven't been flying.  And once they are flying, the DL bumps their own attack missions give will (usually) keep it high enough for them to keep attacking.

That's not a guarentee that DL is the problem here.  Just that it is an often overlooked aspect.

i have seen problems where low DLs have limited attacks - but i don't recall this ever happening with an airfield (nor naval target) - nor have i ever heard of a dev saying it is a problem limiting AIRFIELD attacks... have you?

One possibility i haven't seen addressed yet is weather.

There were LBA strikes all three days from Kwaj.

Changing the orders as suggested worked.

rtrapasso -> RE: Failure to Fly (7/26/2007 11:29:11 PM)

Weather could (possibly) have hit the carriers, but not the island, although for this to happen three days in a row seems highly unlikely.

i'm glad the order switch worked!! [:)]

My opponents use it on a daily basis, and there's a copy of the Skripta manual posted there that people have downloaded. See if you can access <http://scat-he-g4.sunderland.ac.uk/~harryerw/index.html>. If you can't, either the university router is down or you're being blocked at your end.
