I have no clue why Hortlundīs ASW is so effective. Two PC and my sub sinks immediately. Never seen such an effective Japanese ASW like in this campaign ever before. Most encounters result in at least damaged subs, that isnīt usual... I have to be happy about him nearly not using his ships to hunt down my subs. we ordered a big bomber strike out of Australia attacking Thursday Island. First the 4Es, in the afternoon we will see 2Es also. 50% of our bombers are damaged, the morale of the crews dropped by 40 and the BGs are near inoperational status. Thatīs the bad news. The good news is the fact that 4E bombers are immune to everything in Nikmod and I only lose 2!!!! B-17E. Donīt know if I should be happy about it, or if I should think that this is totally strange. [&:] Hit rate was really satisfying also from that height, but the bomber crews are the best I can field.

our MSW sweept mines and the last mine hit the AK... after this hit, the mine symbol vanished. But what should I think about the casulties? I unloaded a RCT and it gets something like 95% disabled. Well, IMO this is completely BS, while my opponent thinks that I must be nuts to think that this isnīt ok. In his oppinion, this is an OPPOSED landing (note that NOT A SINGLE SHOT was fired) while I think that this is an unopposed landing. Even if it would be an opposed landing, 95% disablements is completely BS and I have no clue how the game can come up with such result that are just plain stupid. Do I need 100% preparation to disembark ships? When the enemy isnīt shooting a single shot at your RCT, how can it be that 95% of the soldiers and guns are disabled? [sm=crazy.gif]

every day, a Lightning is doing recon flights over Rangoon, spotting dozens of ships in the harbour and all the last days, the CAP was only more or less a joke. First I thought about a trap to lure my bombers in with one day no CAP and the next day full CAP but that wasnīt the case. So I ordered my Wellingtons and LB-30 (they were grounded due to bad weather) to attack Rangoon. And we only find one Sentai on Cap which canīt stop our bombers and also the flak fire at Rangoon is "light" (for Nimod). We achieve a wonderful result for only a couple of aircraft lost today! I expect some more ships to sink and am glad there wasnīt a CA or BB in the port that would have acted as bullet prove bomb magnet.

I donīt know what Hortlund is thinking about putting ships into Rangoonīs port and not having a huge Cap umbrella there. Canīt understand it...

Our two DDs that were hit (one 5,5 inch shell and a 4,7 inch shell) are both below 10 sys damage and will be repaired at Trimcomale within no time! There arenīt many Japanese CLs left and while there was a short phase when Hortlund covered his convoys, that were going into dangerous waters, with CAs or BBs, he seems still not convinced about the fact that my surface combat TFs really have been hurting him all the war already. castor troy -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/21/2008 12:33:40 AM)

British heavy cruisers sunk DD Matsukaze and heavily damaged the Japanese light cruiser Abukuma with gunfire at Andaman Island in the Indian ocean. CL Abukuma was left behind as a floating wreck and is expected to be sunk!

IJN Abukuma was a Nagara-class light cruiser in the Imperial Japanese Navy, named after the Abukuma River in the TĻhoku region of Japan.

Background
Abukuma was the sixth (and final) vessel completed in the Nagara-class of light cruisers, and like other vessels of her class, she was intended for use as the flagship of a destroyer flotilla, and it was in that role that she participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Service Career

Early career
Abukuma was completed at the Uraga Dock Company on 26 May 1925, its commissioning having been delayed due to the Great Kanto Earthquake. In 1932, it was assigned to the Japanese Third Fleet and assigned to patrols off the coast of northern China after the Manchurian Incident. As the war situation with China continued to deteriorate, Abukuma was assigned to provide coverage for Japanese transports during the Battle of Shanghai, and remained on station patrolling the China coast and the Yangtze River through 1938.

The Pearl Harbor raid
Abukuma set sail from Hitokappu Bay in the Kurile Islands on 26 November 1941 with Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo's Carrier Striking Force. She served as the flagship of Rear Admiral Sentaro Omori's Destroyer Squadron 1 ("DesRon1"), consisting of the destroyers Shiranuhi, Arare, Kagero, Kasumi, Tanikaze, Hamakaze, Isokaze, and Urakaze.

DesRon1 served as the anti-submarine escort for the six aircraft carriers (Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, Zuikaku), two battleships (Hiei and Kirishima) and two heavy cruisers (Tone and Chikuma) that carried the offensive power of the Carrier Striking Force. Nearly 360 aircraft were launched against Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 inflicting terrible damage: sinking four American battleships, damaging three others, destroying more than 100 aircraft, and killing 2,335 American servicemen in one morning.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Abukuma led DesRon1 with most of the Carrier Striking Force in the return to Japan, and received a hero's welcome on 23 December 1941.

Actions in the South Pacific
In January 1942, DesRon1 escorted invasion fleet for Rabaul, New Britain and Kavieng, New Guinea from its new base at Truk in the Caroline Islands.

In early February, DesRon1 accompanied the Carrier Striking Force in an unsuccessful pursuit of Vice Admiral William F. Halsey JrĄŊs Task Force 8, after the USS Enterprise (CV-6) raided Kwajalein and Wotje in the Marshall Islands. Abukuma was then ordered to Palau, from which it accompanied the Carrier Striking Force on the attack on Port Darwin, Australia.

At the end of February and into April, DesRon1 escorted the Carrier Striking Force in attacks on Java in the Dutch East Indies, and Columbo and Trincomalee in Ceylon and against other targets in the Indian Ocean, including the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Hermes. The fleet returned to Singapore on 11 April 1942.

Battle of the Aleutian Islands
In May, Abukuma and its destroyer squadron were re-assigned to the Northern Force under Vice Admiral Boshiro Hosogaya, and escorted the light aircraft carriers Ryujo and Junyo, supporting the invasion of Attu and Kiska in the Battle of the Aleutian Islands.

In June and July, DesRon1 returned to Japan to escort a convoy of reinforcements to the two freshly captured islands in the Aleutians. After uneventful patrolling in the Aleutian Islands and Kurile Islands, DesRon1 escorted three more reinforcement and supply convoys to the Aleutians in October, November and December.

The Abukuma returned to Sasebo Navy Yard for refit on 12 December 1942, during which time two triple-mount Type 96 25 mm AA guns were installed, and its No. 5 140 mm gun and the quad 13.2 mm machine gun mount in front of the bridge were replaced by a twin 13.2 mm machine gun mount. After refit, Abukuma returned to northern waters to continue reinforcement operations to Attu and Kiska in January, February and March 1943.

Abukuma participated in the Battle of the Komandorski Islands on 26 March 1943. Abukuma was undamaged, but the heavy cruiser Nachi was badly damaged and the Japanese Fifth Fleet was forced to abort its supply mission to the Aleutians. The fleet commander, Vice Admiral Hosogaya, disgraced because he had been forced to withdraw by the weaker American fleet, was forced to retire. Abukuma was then re-assigned to the Japanese Fifth Fleet under Vice Admiral Shiro Kawase.

From April through May 1943, Abukuma underwent refit at the Maizuru Navy Yard, during which time a Type 21 air-search radar was installed, and it was thus not present during "Operation Landcrab", during which US forces recaptured Attu.

In July, Abukuma and DesRon1 provided support for the evacuation of Kiska. On 26 July 1943, the kaibokan Kunashiri collided with the Abukuma, hitting her starboard quarter, but causing little damage. On 12 September 1943, while cruising off Paramushiro, Abukuma suffered slight damage by near misses by bombs from USAAF B-24 Liberator and B-25 Mitchell aircraft.

In dry dock once again from October through November 1943, AbukumaĄŊs No. 7 gun mount was removed, and a twin mount of 40 caliber Type 89 127 mm HA guns (unshielded) was fitted, as was a triple-mount Type 96 25 mm AA gun and four single-mount 25 mm AA guns. After refit, Abukuma returned to northern waters in December for antisubmarine patrol off HokkaidĻ and the Kurile islands to June.

On 21 June 1944, during yet another refit at Yokosuka, a Type 22 surface-search radar was fitted, together with ten more single-mount Type 96 25 mm AA guns. Five single-mount Type 93 13.2 mm machine guns were also added. Repairs were completed by 13 July 1944.

Battle of Surigao Strait
Abukuma remained in Japanese home waters through the middle of October, when it is reassigned to sortie with its seven destroyers against the US fleet off Taiwan in October 1944. However, it is re-directed from Mako in the Pescadores to Manila to support Vice Admiral Shoji Nishimura against the American Navy in the Philippines. Abukuma was joined by the heavy cruisers Nachi and Ashigara. During October 15-22, this flotilla was spotted by six different American submarines, but only one was able to maneuver close enough to fire torpedoes: the USS Seadragon (SS-194). The flotilla was cruising at 19 knots and zigzagging through the Luzon Strait on October 22. The Seadragon fired four torpedoes through her stern tubes, but all missed. All six submarines reported the flotilla's course, position and speed to American fleet units approaching the area.

On October 25, Abukuma met her fate in the Battle of the Surigao Strait, part of the overall campaign of four naval battles collectively referred to as the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In the pre-dawn hours, the flotilla was attacked by a squadron of American PT Boats. Lieutenant (jg) Mike Kovar's PT-137 fired a torpedo at a destroyer, but it ran deep and passed beneath the target to strike Abukuma at 3:25 AM in the No. 1 boiler room, killing 30 crewmen.

Abukuma was disabled and fell behind the rest of the flotilla, but after emergency repairs, was able to get under way and by 4:45 AM, she was making 20 knots. By 5:35 AM, Abukuma had caught up to the rest of the flotilla. However, she was down at the bow and shipping at least 500 tons of seawater; at 8:30 AM she was ordered to Dapitan for repairs, escorted by the destroyer Ushio.

On October 26, Abukuma was spotted and attacked repeatedly by B-24 Liberator bombers of the 5th Group, 13th Air Force armed with 500-lb (227 kg) bombs. At 10:06 AM she took a direct hit near the No. 3 140 mm turret; at 10:20 two more hits by B-24 bombers of the 33rd Squadron, 22nd Group, 5th Air Force were scored further aft that started fires. The fire spread to the engine rooms and aft torpedo rooms. Power was lost and the ship's speed declined. At 10:37 AM, four Type 93 Long Lance torpedoes in the aft torpedo room exploded with devastating effect. Between 11:00 and 11:30 AM off Negros Island, the crew abandoned ship. At 11:42 AM, she sank by the stern at 09Ąã20ĄäN, 122Ąã32ĄäE with 250 of her crewmen. Ushio rescued her captain and 283 crewmen.

Abukuma was removed from the Navy List on 20 December 1944.

as our RCT was completely disabled from the so called opposed landing (at least Hortlund calls it like that) we will just bomb this base for months until the poopy fragment of the nav guard unit will be starved to death and then the base will autoconvert... Hortlund keeps insisting in his emails what super duper strong base I attacked and that it was a bloodily opposed landing against a defender that is armed to the teeth and very well dug in... [X(][8|][:(][>:][&:] well, remember there wasnīt a single shot fired in the replay, this is just a poopy fragment (with 20 assault points) of a nav guard unit, the base and unit was bombed for months and I landed a full RCT. Result: my RCT was 95% disabled. Thatīs okay for Hortlund...[sm=00000289.gif]

On the other hand, remember the last major invasion of the Japanese. He really did an OPPOSED landing at Trimcomale, with one div against two of my brigades, a full CD unit with 2x9,2 inch CD guns and 18x6 inch CD guns, level 6 forts and his unit was no way nearly as much disabled as he did land only around 70% of his div and still had 200 assault points (out of 400). Thatīs okay for him also. Remember! If something is working in your favour when you do it, then itīs good and working perfectly! If your opponent is doing the same thing and then the result is completely loopsided again in your favour, itīs also good and working perfectly...

Unfortunately only one bomb hit (500lb) penetrated the deck armor, so the overall result of this attack was poor. IRL a lack of fire onto the ships that carried the troops does not mean the landing was unopposed. Troops and (abstracted) landing craft can still be very badly shot up.

so, months of bombing... a dozen BB bombardments... no or surely nearly no supply... 20 assault points for the defender... a full RCT that is being unloaded... the RCT is 95% disabled on turn one? Okay?

This means I would only need 100 divisions unloaded in one turn to take out an enemy bgd...

well, a friend told me that John Rambo also killed 283 men... there must be a lot of John Rambos on that island... I find it as realistic as this stupid film.

witpqs -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/21/2008 7:52:51 PM)

Have you asked your opponent how many supplies he has on-hand? What are the various leaders' ratings? All the units' experience ratings? Did they unload from LST and small landing craft, or from AP's? The combined assault ratings of the opposing forces?

I don't know if 95% disablement is a realistic outcome or not, but there is a lot more to it. I was only answering your concern about the landing being unopposed. If there are troops there, the landing is opposed, although I'm not sure about the game's internals.

donīt know how the supplies look like there, for sure not good after months of constant bombing and naval bombardments. I just donīt know how this small fragment with 20 assault points can completely wreck a whole RCT... this is a mistery for me...

I donīt understand it but hey, it serves me well. Even though we will lose Monssen due to the usual mine hit we achieve to sink an AP and a big AK. The dozens of hits are result of a battle from 2000 yards and instead of using the main armament, the ships are shooting at the merchants with AA weapons...

Our TF had two tasks: sink a couple of ships (achieved) and force the enemy convoy out of the hex, away from Cap (achieved). So now this TF is South of Gili Gili and we wait for our bombers to attack in the morning...

this is the attack on the TF we forced out of Gili Gili! In the morning our base was clouded and this strike goes in in the afternoon. We see 16 bombers out of 140 attacking. castor troy -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/22/2008 3:36:11 PM)

DD Tucker was lost to enemy land based bombers after being heavily damaged by a Japanes patrol craft in a night engagement near Dili.

USS Tucker (DD-374), 1936-1942

USS Tucker, a 1500-ton Mahan class destroyer, was built at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Virginia. Commissioned in July 1936, she spent the next year working up in the western Atlantic before going to the Pacific to join the Battle Fleet. During the rest of the decade Tucker mainly operated off the West Coast and in Hawaiian waters, with a trip into the Caribbean in early 1939 to participate in Fleet Problem XX. In 1941 she visited New Zealand as part of the Navy's efforts to demonstrate its presence in the region at a time of rising tensions with Japan.

Tucker was moored at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, when Japan's surprise attack on the Pacific Fleet abruptly brought the United States into World War II on 7 December 1941. For the next several months she was engaged in patrol and escort duties between Hawaii and the West Coast. Sent to the south Pacific in the spring of 1942, Tucker operated between Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. On 3 August 1942, while escorting a freighter, she entered a defensive minefield near Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides and struck a mine amidships. With her back broken, Tucker gradually sank despite attempts to tow her ashore. This tragic accident, the result of a communications failure, cost the lives of six of her crew and deprived the Allies of a badly needed destroyer on the eve of the long and costly Guadalcanal campaign.

all in all, totally depressing turn... once again... I get my subs to attack, they have a hit rate of 0,000024%... I even seem to easily get my Catalinas to attack, then I donīt even hear the splash from the torpedo attacks... [8|] excellent. What am I doing wrong?

I move my subs every turn, with the result that EVERY turn 90% of my subs are spotted again, attacked on a daily basis, to point out the situation: if the Japanese player uses hundreds of IJA bombers for anti sub warfare then Allied subs are useless... even more than they already are with a hit rate that is ridicoulos if it takes 40 torps to finally sink one merchant...
