honestly, IMO itīs a bit strange that he tells me for days how realistic it is to mass hundreds on IJAAF medium bombers in the Philipines to hunt down 12 of my subs and then he complains about Jumper that he used KB to hunt 40 of his subs within 8 hexes.

At least he "can see my point now".

mdiehl -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/27/2008 11:18:13 PM)

His point is that the rules should require that his opponent tie their hands behind their backs.

Look, you've noted that you've not engaged in 4EB strategic raids on oil resources because you felt obliged to let your submarines do the lifting for you as it felt "more historical." PzjH has stumbled on a cute trick that makes ahistorical use of his assets to neutralize your historical use of yours. I think you should feel free to send B-24s after Balikpapan or any other resource hex that looks vulnerable to you whenever you want. That use of American 4EBs has lots of historical precedent in the PTO and the ETO.

Now that I think of it, when it becomes feasible, a few Allied 4EB massive night bombing raids on bases packed with IJAAF bombers set to ASW patrol might be poetic justice.

Back in the days of GGPW, one way to give the Japanese player the conniptions was to use B-17s over bases packed with Zeros, because the game engine made Zeros quite vulnerable (properly so) and B-17s far too invulnerable. In effect you had something like a B-17 fighter sweep death star effect in which you could run up Zero losses by looking for trouble with B-17s. It was of course historically unprecedented and gamey as hell, and in PBEM most people agreed not to do such things. But against PzjH, that sort of gamey trick is simply fair turnabout, IMO.

I wonīt break my own hr (which is one that I have only for me, it was never suggested from my opponent).

I just canīt get it that Hortlund is so upset about Jumper when heīs doing the same as Hortlund is doing.[8|] well, do something gamey and itīs realistic for you, if your opponent does the gamey thing you do to you, then cry foul...

Weīre entering 43 in a few days and this PBEM has come further than I thought, as Hortlund and I seem to have nearly always complete different oppinions when it comes down to "game the game". I especially liked when he posted that he hates players that are "gaming the game"...

still, with all the frustration we surely both had (as he thinks that everything I did so far is gamey too) it was more or less worth spending the time. And I have to say heīs a very reliable opponent.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Gili Gili at 56,94

Japanese Ships
AK Kiyosumi Maru, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
AK Lyons Maru, Shell hits 24, and is sunk

Allied Ships
CL Marblehead
DD Grayson
DD Morris

I could say: as usual, there are no heavy escorts for Japanese convoys going to front line bases. And again we take advantage of that and this TF is shot to pieces. Two big AKs lost.

The second TF with two big and a small AK was surprised also but our ships break off pretty fast again... Marblehead has already a night exp of 62 which is pretty high for a USN ship.

the second time we see Lightnings in combat! Last time the Zeroes over Lautern took down our Lightnings at a 15:0 rate, [X(] so I was hesitant to use them again. After our succesful attack on Thursday Island a couple of turns ago I decided it could be worth a try as I was more or less sure there wouldnīt be a big Cap. I was right and the dozen Zeroes in the air were not able to really harm our fighters this time. We started off with the bounce on our side and took down 4 Zeroes pretty fast when the bounce changed sides and the Zeroes damaged a couple of our Lightnings before another Zero was shot down. One of our long range escorts was lost to ops, flak was absolutely effective again and the airfield will be completely repaired by the 30.000 troops there within the next three days.

our troops at Akyab were already ordered to move North again... the Japanese airforce isnīt willing to fight for Akya (no wonder when they have flak from the 23rd century there[8|]), Rangoon and Mandalay are already operating hundreds of Tojos (which are far superior to all we can field), so the battle for Burma will begin in... 1958...

Your fish hit rate is pretty abysmal, have you changed your sub commanders (I'm sure you have, just thought I'd ask)? I always notice a rather sharp increase in both hit ratios and attacks when you exchange your sub commanders to those with 60+ naval skill and aggressivnes.

I went through my sub skippers and replaced a lot of them before they left port a couple of weeks ago, after having done the 10/42 upgrade. Now we have radar, we have the chance to attack, but we need 50-60 torps (a rough guess) to hit and sink a slow merchant. [8|]

first thought I had: Kiska airfield must be 100% damaged, one second later I knew: these are KBīs Zeroes on LRCAP! Great, once again my 36 Catalinas spot nothing and my aircraft are shot out of the sky. My Wildcat pilots were 70+ exp vs the KBīs pilots with 80+. Result in Nikmod: 31:2 kills in favour of the Zeroes. Iīve said it before: if you play Nikmod, send out your bombers WITHOUT escort. The fighter vs fighter combat seems so far as strange as the fighter vs bomber combat. Unfortunately I canīt say anything else. Last time Iīve shaked my head was when I saw my Lightnings losing 15:0 against Zeroes, this time Iīm again shaking my head when I see 70 exp Wildcats losing 32:2 against Zeroes. Date is 1/1/43 now. [:(] And again I have to think about my opponentīs words: "Nimod has completely crippled the Japanese side"... [:'(]

Besides the fact that the result of this engagement is just mmmmmm, it was nevertheless a very good ambush by my opponent!

with 1/43 the B-25J entered production, but we arenīt in need of Allied medium bombers anyway as we have hundreds of Marauders and B-25C in the pool. Next important date will be 2/43 when the Corsair will enter production, followed by 3/43 when the P-47 will enter production. With the P-47 entering production and the P-38 already in production since 10/42 we will then receive 70 USAAF fighters with a range greater than 5 which will be very important for our upcoming offensives.

KB was spotted one hex East of Kiska Island today. A couple of TFs seem to bring supply, more troops and probably also mines to Kiska! Excellent, as soon as KB leaves, Kiska will only be another Japanese prison camp that I will bomb for the next couple of months, while my troops will train to reach 100% preparation. Perhaps with 100% preparation I will only see 50% of my troops disabled during unlading, not 95% disabled like at Dutch Harbour last time, when they were only 40% prepared.[8|]

Thank god, our agile ships evaded the bombers while damaging 12 of them (none lost though). We spotted only 1 AK at Gili Gili, so I decided to retire the TF as it isnīt worth the risk at the moment. See, itīs so easy to guard your convoys going to front line bases! Just put a couple of bombers on nav attack there or use CAs as escort and voilá, I wouldnīt dare to attack those convoys. we attack PM again, this time at lower alt at acceptable losses. 2 bombers are lost to the enemy and another dozen to the vanish aircraft bug! Excellent! [sm=crazy.gif] As soon as you have a couple of damaged aircraft somewhere and you transfer the 98% of the undamaged aircraft out, you have a 90% chance that the damaged aircraft left behind vanish into Nirvana. Bugged piece of crap...

play stock! At least then you have such high replacement numbers that you donīt have to cry if you lose 50% of the monthly 4E replacement rate to the vanish aircraft bug... [8|]

we found another point where we donīt seem to agree! [:D] I told him that he was yet another time lucky or better say he took advantage of the designers being *§$%"...

Last turn I had some 30 aircraft at Amchitka and KB was still in the area (no attacks on my base so far). So I decided to fly in 220 more (including 80+ exp P-39). I set them all to nav attack at 6000ft so my P-39 could escort below 10.000ft. There were some 120 bombers (Wellingtons, Dauntless, Avengers), 72 P-39 and 24 F4F-4. So exactly this turn, Hortlund decides to bomb my airfield AND our aircraft are grounded due to a cloud over the base. Well, I dared to say that he was lucky because even though there were Blizzards in this area he launched and hit me hard while my aircraft were grounded and all flights were cancelled. He wasnīt amused about me saying that he was lucky today! I didnīt mean it personal though, that was just what I was thinking. AND of course itīs another oversight of the developers that aircraft canīt launch due to bad weather but other aircraft can fly in and bomb as if it would be bright sunshine. [sm=crazy.gif]

A fragile Kate can fly in but a tough Dauntless or Avenger canīt fly out? Well, perhaps the attacker attacked above the Blizzard, but then the hit rate should be 0%.

Perhaps I was the lucky one as my aircraft didnīt launch against KB! As perhaps my 80+ exp P-39 would have lost 16:1 against the Zeroes, just like my F4F-4 did a couple of turns ago. Good thing is I can easily afford those aircraft lost on the ground as I have hundreds of them in pool. But still, it really pisses me off and I guess I overreacted today while giving orders for the new turn as I have set some 1000 aircraft in India on attack mode to take revenge for this turn... [sm=00000643.gif] Iīm just too emotional! [:D]

we filled up all front line bases with the allowed maximum number of attack aircraft and have launched the biggest raid in the war so far. Two of our bases were clouded in the morning so no attacks from Dacca and Imphal in the am phase. I had my best fighters at Imphal to do the first sweep at 4 hexes range but due to bad weather we start off with the huge, combined sweep from Chandpur and Kohima (from 5 hexes). Watching the first 5 minutes of the replay I thought of a complete disaster in the air (once again, I was tempting to just hit the esc key...) as the Zeroes took down some 40 Hurricanes (average exp of my fighter bombers is 80!!) for the loss of 2 Zeroes. Not bad eh? Zeroes achieving kill rates of 20:1 against 80 exp Hurricane IIb. Boy, Nik must really think that the Hurricane was a real crappy plane, as this has been happening since day one of the war... [&:] That was the bad part! [:D]

The good part is that the same Hurricanes that lost 20:1 against the Zeroes won 3 or 4:1 against the Tojo. This is amazing, I really feared the Tojo! We lost a couple of Hurricanes more when our Warhawks showed up (average exp in the low 70s). So while we are always told that speed is far more important in A2A in the game it seems that the far faster Tojo (but far less maneuverable) is absolutely inferior to the Zero. What the Zeroes did to my Hurricanes, the same thing did my Warhawks to the defending Zeroes and even more to the Tojos! I guess 85% of the enemy aircraft shot down, were kills achieved by the USAAF Warhawks. [&o] This means the Warhawks achieved a kill rate of something like 7:1 and really cleared the sky over Mandalay! When the sweep was over, there was only a dozen Japanese fighters left in the air and morale of the defenders was pummeled.

Perfectly! After our succesful sweep the Wellingtons from Calucatta are going in. 7 hexes (within normal range of the Wellington) and a big airfield enable the bombers to attack with their full bomb load (9x500lb) and to achieve a satisfying hit rate. The 6 defending Zeroes arenīt even thinking about attacking our bomber formation and all Wellingtons that were damaged took hits from the numerous flak guns at Mandalay. The bombers increase the numbers of Japanese fighters lost today!

In the afternoon the weather cleared over Imphal and Dacca and we see the sweep from Imphal going in, which faces the remnants of the Japanese fighter force of Mandalay. Two Spits are shot down quickly until the British realized that they were under attack from Japanese Army and Navy fighters coming from above. The Spits evaded further attacks and then fought back bravely, taking down another 5 fighters. 2 Japanese fighters were shot down by RAAF Kittyhawks.

a dozen Marauders failed to locate the target but the majority of the bombers arrives at Mandalay with all the escorts but we face no more enemy fighters over the target. Flak is again intense and for the loss of 2 Marauders we achieve a couple of hits more on the airfield and airbase and destroy half a dozen aircraft on the ground.

All in all, a victory in the sky over Mandalay! Hurrey! [sm=happy0065.gif] I first wanted to wait another month to upgrade my two Marine squadrons in India to Corsairs but after KBīs attack on Amchitka yesterday I acted emotional and thought it is worth to attack now. We had to replace around 45 British pilots (1,5 months of replacements) and a couple of USAAF pilots but I guess we also took down a lot of IJA/IJN pilots that were in the high 70s or 80s.

As expected, the enemy has completely withdrawn from Mandalay now, having hundreds of fighters at Rangoon though. This again shows how important Akyab is and itīs a pity I have lost it so early as from Akyab I could fly escorted attacks on Rangoon. Without Akyab, this isnīt possible, which also means I can hardly invade Andaman Island or a base on Sumatra.

with the retreat of the Japanese airforce from Northern Burma and bad weather preventing strikes everywhere else on the map, we see a quiet day. We spotted the CVEs in this region several times already but so far my bombers on Ceylon refused to attack. Today in the afternoon phase they decided it would be worth to take off as the enemy CVEs were parking just 6 hexes off Ceylon. Two of the CVEs should be finished as we achieved 2x2000 lb bomb hits!! [X(] Rest of the hits were either 250kg AP bombs from the Chinese bombers and 500lb GP bombs from the rest of the LB-30. So this one LB-30 BG dropped 2000lb GP bombs and 500lb GP bombs as well, what makes the general oppinion on the forum that the die roll about bomb loads is done for whole groups obsolete. The LB-30s were one group but they were dropping two different bombs.

Besides that, I have no clue why Hortlund sends his helpless CVEs to such a position.

with cover of 500 carrier based aircraft we moved this bombardment TF in range of Gili Gili and unspotted so far, we nuke the base today torching 70+ aircraft on the ground. Base is hit hard and not operational anymore and the base forces are hit hard also. This should make our retreat less dangerous, I donīt expect any offensive power at this base tomorrow.

this is the setback Iīm talking about. Yesterday we spotted CA Kumano at Port Moresby under heavy Cap and our carriers were covering our bombardment TF 6 hexes South West of Gili Gili. To bring my SBDs in 1000lb bomb range we had to move 6 hexes! Our TFs were all fully fueled and I decided to leave our CAs alone to go in and hit the enemy TF hard. At full speed our carriers could move 8 hexes (got some slow BBs with them) and how far did they move at full speed? 5 hexes, which means our SBDs dropped 500lb bombs (and achieved a lousy hit rate anyway). But still we have more than 100 torp bombers in torp range now! And what happens? We launch the lousy number of 15 torp bombers against this high value TF. This just sucks. Not a single British torp bomber took off, only one US torp bomber sqadron and that was it. To top it off once again, we even achieve one torp hit - that failed to detonate... [8|]

So this means we lost 15 carrier based aircraft for nothing and Hortlund gets away again. For no obvious reason we donīt move far enough, for no obvious reason we launch a ridicoulos strike. In fact, the Japanese should have lost 2 CAs today.

another strike goes in against the remnants of the CVE TF but all miss. Hortlund told me that he was surprised that my bombers launched unescorted against his Cap. I asked him if it was a joke that he thinks that 3 Zeroes on Cap (CVE Hosho) should scare my high exp bombers, but he thinks this should be like that. Looks like we have found another thing about the game where we donīt agree.

If you can figure out how to get a CV TF to move the exact number of hexes you want it to, please let me know. Because that has happened to me over and over; you move to be in position, and somehow they end up 5 hexes away or just short, which is worse than not moving at all. I hope AE has a button "Do Not Refuel Destroyers in CV TF Next turn, under penalty of death".

I guess Hortlund didnīt expect that one. Thursday Island, PM and Gili Gili have nearly no aircraft but PM is LRCAPPed heavily every day, so the only base those fighters can come from is Lae which we have been targetting for 3 days already. Morale of our bomber crews isnnīt existing anymore but we achieve a nice result at extended range. Seems like the high exp of our 4E crews pays off. We destroyed over 100 Zeroes the last three days on the ground but mostly A6M3 which are already being replaced by A6M3a and with a production of 250+ every month, the Japanese are only laughing about their losses on the ground.

At the end of the day, here comes the highlight: [:D]

Sub attack near Andaman Island at 23,34

Japanese Ships
CVE Taiyo, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Cachalot

I ordered 3 subs from Diamond Harbour to race South to blocade the shipping lane from Andaman Island to Rangoon and arriving at Andaman Island, Cachalot spots the heavily damaged CVE Taiyo and fires two MK14 torps from her rear tubes sinking the CVE with one hit. And CVE Chuyo was reported sunk also! [&o]

The time of those pirates in the Indian Ocean is over! Hurrey! Hopefully the two Kate daitais are completely lost also.

I have sent out CA Frobisher, a CL and 2 DDs from Colombo on full speed to engage shipping at Andaman. Several TFs are spotted there and my cruiser squadron will arrive there tomorrow as the TF took position unspotted today.

Just got caught back up. Nice news about the CVEs. [&o] In the long run, the loss of all those DDs has got to hurt. Once you start getting the Fletcher's in numbers, he is going to pay. Placing a few Cleveland Class CL along with the Fletchers in a SC TF should give even the Japanese CA some pause. [;)]
