while I know that everything is based on die rolls in this game, I still wonder what the "developers" were thinking when setting the probabilities. Thinking [8|], I guess they used dice to set the probabilities. What Iīm seeing here is such a bull **** that I really am thinking to just stop playing this game at some point as the results seem to be so off that itīs not worth spending so much time with this "product". Let alone thinking about paying another 40$ for AE, when it is still using the same stupid coding.

How realistic are the last 20 sub attacks? Itīs BS if someone thinks that this is how it was in real life. Not even nearly... [>:]

In return, of course one of my subs was again hit by a Helen on ASW patrol and 90% of all my subs were spotted by Helens... [sm=crazy.gif][sm=crazy.gif][sm=crazy.gif]

This whole game has to be rewritten as thereīs so much wrong it canīt get wronger. Once again it comes to mind that the only reason Iīm spending so much time with it, is the fact that thereīs no other game about this theater and itīs the only one that comes with a big OOB. And then you end up with a monopoly. [8|]

castor troy -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/23/2008 3:05:27 PM)

Counted it up on the last two pages of the AAR. 4 out of 18 sub attacks were "succesful", which means resulted in (most times) one torp hit. So if we take an average of 5 torps launched (most salvos are 4 or 6 torps) then it means my subs expanded 90 torps for 4 ships hit... [8|]

do I need to say more?

second attack tonight... again no "splash". Bet 1000 Euros this is another broken feature. While I know it worked at some point, I donīt know if it works with the latest patch. I guess, it doesnīt work. The aircraft can miss, no problem, but everytime in the game when torps are dropped you hear a "splash". Not a single time I heard a splash from my Catalinas dropping a torp. Excellent!! [8|]

The attacks are being stopped and the IJN BBs can safely sit 6 hexes away from our base... [8|]

3 near misses, Gato lost half of her forward torpedo tubes. While I know that they "can" be repaired (at least thatīs what people are saying on the forum), for me it has never worked so far. When I look at the number of torps, then Iīm told numbers like 33 or 27, after months of sitting disbanded in port... Where are those 1000lb AP bombs? This squadron is 79 exp and we still drop GP bombs on the bomb prove BBs. If they just would attack the cruisers. Ridicoulos enough that the Japanese player can park his BBs 5 hexes off a major Allied base without having to fear anything. If I would have PTs in this region I would send 5 dozen of them against his BBs...

I can always read your AAR and know that things in my PBEM are not that bad. [:D]

My rant is around how many PBYs I need on naval search to see his ships before some base undergoes a "nuke" attack on one of my forward bases or a sub comes into a base to lays mines and I only know about when one of my ships wants to be a minesweeper...once. [:(]  Then there is the inablity to hit those BBs with torpedoes as they are 5 hexes away. [:@] I hope and pray that this one issue is changed in AE. 3 x 8 hour phases vs. the current 2 x 12 hour phases would help, IMO.

I spotted a TF at Andaman last turn so I set my bombers on nav attack as I thought it would be an ASW TF. Instead itīs the TF with the super BB again. At the moment Iīm really thinking about sending in two of my British BBs to attack the beast. But that would be just for fun I guess as I donīt really have a reason to attack the ship when I can take it out with torpedo bombers at some point. I have to say, Iīm more afraid of three dozen Betties attacking my BBs on their way in, than to see my BBs being sunk by Musashi.

Well historicaly the German u-boot campaign in the Atlantic was a failure in such a sense that it failed in strangling the British isles, but it was successful in such a sense that it forced the British to enforce the convoy system which in itself dropped British imports by a third and forced the British to divert substantial aerial and naval assets in supressing the German wolfpacks.
The Japanese did not make use of a convoy system in real life nor did they divert much of any aerial assets to hunt down the American subs which is the reason why the American sub campaign in real life was as succesful as it was. Horty is as far as I can see from your combat reports is using large convoys, using substantial aerial assets to hunt your subs as well as quite a few ASW taskforces.
If I were in your shoes, I would be quite pleased that my opponent is diverting this many resources in hunting down what at best would be a nuisance.

P.s love the AAR, kick Hortys arse please.

ny59giants -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/25/2008 1:23:28 AM)

A common source of the sync bug in one of my games has been my opponent having something else running in the background, but minimized. Usually a friendly reminder gets rid of the problem. [:)] Thus, ensure that only one program (WITP) is running.

1275psi -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/25/2008 4:15:54 AM)

Not proven, but highly suspected for synch bug is players "fast forwarding" the combat replay during strafing attack.
To avoid -watch all the way through.

(seems to work for me)

Hi!

If my subs actually would hit something, they would be far more than a nuissance (like they were in the first four months of the war where subs alone sunk a hundred APs!). The convoys or the ASW TFs arenīt much of a problem. The "only" problem my subs face are hundreds of Helens as it seems that all the Japanese Army bombers are used for ASW which seems a bit too much for me. I havenīt had a IJAAF bomber attacking something else than subs for months...

this TF moved in from Chandpur (fully fueled, 5 hexes), does the bombardment (wihtout effect) and then stops ONE hex West of Akyab! the B-17 crews are the most experienced and are a truely deadly weapon. If thereīs something superior to everything the Japanese can field, then itīs the B-17 and B-24 (if flown by high exp crews and against unarmored targets). While fighters canīt stop them at all (they even canīt really hurt them) Hortlund again sends a big TF into a front line base without flying in 200 fighters first (which are available in the area, but are flying Cap over PM and Thursday). So he has to pay a very high price again. Unfortunately we didnīt kill the escorts, something my subs would really appreciate. Our bombers even shot down two enemy fighters today for only two bombers lost. A clear success.

Hortlund moves a construction btn towards the trail North of Akyab. The intention is obvious, he wants to create a ZOC with his mini unit to cut my supply path. If he really does that (and Iīm sure he will as he did the same with units of 25 men in India too), then I will land troops in the non base hex South of Akyab and North of Akyab to open my supply path again and at the same time close his supply path to Akyab. Want to bet that this will lead to a discussion? [:'(] Doing a non base hex landing is IMO not more gamey than using a mini unit to create a Zoc behind an Army of 100.000 men.

castor troy -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/25/2008 10:55:05 PM)

today, two of our subs were hit by Helens... this is the point where I told Hortlund that itīs totally off for me to use ALL Japanese Army bombers for ASW duty. To top it off he has not just placed them all over the map, no, he puts hundreds of them in one small area like the Philipines to kill the 8 subs there, then move all 300+ bombers to Borneo to kill the 8 subs there...

at the moment weīre talking about dropping the game (once again) as I told Steve that I canīt accept the use of all the IJAAF bombers on ASW when it takes only 40 days to hit 50 subs with 250kg AP bombs. I said that as soon as 50% of my subs are out of action or sunk due to Helens on ASW I will use my 4Es on alts between 1000 and 6000ft again, knowing that this will completely piss him off. So now he insist that we have a hr on 4E attack height but still finds it reasonable to have the whole IJAAF on ASW. He really must think that this is a valid tactic that would have worked in real life also because he even told me he has ALL his IJAAF bombers on ASW, but I only have to fear 250 of them as those are the ones that are between 75 and 85 exp.

so now weīre in the discussion and who knows if the game goes on.

Iīm told that he will only accept a hr if the majority on the forum says that it is, how should I call it, strange?? that ALL Japanese Army bombers are on ASW. So letīs see with what glorious arguments people come up to prove me that it would have been possible to convince the high command that all 400+ Army bombers should be taken away from the front to fly ASW patrols.

I really appreciate Steve as my opponent, perhaps my words are harsh sometimes. The problem we have is the fact that we have just completely different oppinions on what is gamey and what is not. This time: for me itīs gamey to use all Army bombers for ASW, not gamey for him.

castor troy -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/26/2008 12:01:18 AM)

One thing that I have learnt in this PBEM is: never start a PBEM when you donīt have hrs for all and everything. We started the game with: if thereīs an issue we can set hrs in. Well, thereīs a hr now for 4E bombers for example (which Hortlund insists in) but he doesnīt want to have one regarding all IJAAF bombers massed within 5 hexes on ASW patrol. 4Es are too deadly against ships, well Betties dropping torps everytime is fine... Sometimes I wonder who is more stubborn. He or me?

I even have my own hr about not bombing enemy occupied oil / HI / resources to make the game more realistic and to force me into a realistic sub war. Well, with how Hortlund seems to think about a realistic air ASW, my own thinking about a realistic sub war has vanished... [8|]

quote:

Why? In the real war the USAAF did in fact bomb occupied oil resources. Balikpapan's fields and refineries were struck on several occasions.

2ndACR -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/26/2008 4:03:04 AM)

Well, I have to say, that I too use a huge portion of my army bomber force on ASW starting around mid 42 or so. Granted I do not mass all 300 or so in a small area, but will place 36 or 27 on every level 4 airfield backed up by an ASW TF or 2. What the bombers do not hit, my ASW jumps on. But when you look at the number of level 4 air bases, I can mass alot real fast if needed. Or even have the 200 or so in a small area.

I have not had anyone try an early sub campaign against me though. Most wait until 1943 until the torps are fixed, so I might when faced with this react the same way as him.

But I will mass every army bomber to shut down an airfield or 2 and then return them to ASW duty.

I always ask for a HR of 4E not below 10,000 feet on naval strike. But since I play nikmod, I do not worry too much about 4E's coming in at treetop level. They can really hurt me, but I will hurt them too. I have to agree on the const bn creating a ZOC though. For cutting off units, I would prefer a brigade at least. And ask for such ahead of time by HR. Feel free to ZOC me, but at least use a brigade or larger. Even a full infantry regiment makes it more realistic.

yes, but for me itīs just too easy to destroy every point of HI / oil / resources in range of my bombers AND it should force the Allied player (ME [:D]) to use my subs. It also should force me to take bases in the SRA back asap to interdict shipping there, if not, the Japanese player can bring back his oil for a long time. And because I have even seen suicide carrier attacks in my PBEMs in mid 42 when the Allied massed his carriers to send them on a suicide mission to take out Palembangīs oil fields for example. Lose 3 carriers for the destruction of 400-600 oil points is something good in the long run, even if it might be stupid in the short run.

thereīs no difference when it comes to the bombers on ASW if you attack in 42 or late 45. My torps donīt affect the hit rates of super massed IJA bombers. Like I said, as a Japanese player, of course I also use Army bombers for ASW. Not all of them and of course and normally I put them into bases that their search range of 8 doesnīt overlap but should be close together. Heck, this way I still have a lot, probably also 200 or so bombers on nav search. BUT on the whole map. In my game against Swift I had one Sentai of Sallies in the Pacific and used it in the area Johnston down to Canton and this single Sentai achieved FAR too many hits.

So while Steve just doesnīt want to understand my point, for me the use of hundreds of Helens in the Philipines alone is off.

Regarding the ZOC. Well he used his units in India that consisted of something like 3 dozen men on average to create Zocs through all of India, so Iīm pretty sure that his construction btn (that I canīt even hurt with my airattacks anymore) will march into the trail hex North of Akyab. Why should it else be in this place? When it arrives, I will do a NON BASE HEX LANDING - thus breaking one of our HRs and forcing my opponent to quit the game at the latest then. [8|]

I think a non base hex landing is gamey! Something my opponent will agree to. But he doesnīt think it is gamey to cut the supply path for 100.000 Allied troops with a construction btn. I think that is gamey too, but thereīs no sense in even discussing it I fear. In fact, I guess the time we invest into the game and our AARs is wasted if we canīt get to agree to certain things in the game when it comes down to "gameyness".

Half of our bombers are damaged, the BGs can be seen as inoperational. Drop of morale was between 30 and 40! [X(] Nevertheless this time we achieve an unbelievable high hit rate, seems the exp of mostly around 80 of my 4Es pays off. We moved most of the 4Es out and have set 200 Mitchels on airfield attack tomorrow. After my last attack on shipping at Gili Gili, the Cap at Thursday Island dropped from 60+ to around 30 every turn while the Cap at Gili Gili went up. We took advantage of that and hit Thursday hard today. In total Japan lost 18 aircraft today to 6 Allied aircraft. 4 4Es were lost though (most to flak) which is 3 times as many as the daily replacement rate. What saves me from running out is the fact that I canīt use them the next couple of days due to so many being damaged.

Iīm already thinking about pulling out of Akyab again. Canīt see what I should achieve there as the Japanese airforce isnīt fighting for it anyway and I would need some 4000 assault points to take the base.

not really, if it increased at all. Most of my units are around mid 60 with 2 Brit divs in the low 70s. Though I donīt know how low they started out. There wasnīt a deliberate attacks from any side so only bombardments all the time.

Thresher attacked again a s l o w merchant, this time with 4 torps and she missed again. [8|] Iīve already mentioned that the hit rate of subs is really poorly modelled in WITP. Thatīs not something Iīm saying because I have that feeling in my stomache, just look at the last 10 pages of this AAR. Once again the developers failed, unfortunately. 60 torps to hit and sink one merchant? With salvoes of two or three times more torps than were used in real life? [>:] Heck, what did Matrix really think about when developing this game? Or am I just super duper unlucky with the dices? No matter how lucky or unlucky I am, probabilities should hit at some point. If not, then they are most likely not right.

castor troy -> RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy (3/27/2008 9:16:57 PM)

Hortlund said today that he will limit his Army bombers on ASW somewhat. [X(] Well, this isnīt because I came up with good arguments, as until yesterday he thought my arguments are BS, but I guess it is because of his game against Jumper, where Jumper used KB to sweep the sealane between New Guinea and Australia of the dozens of subs Hortlund had there! [:D]

He told me that he now sees my point! [:D] So if that wouldnīt have happened he would still think itīs realistic what he did. But then it must be also realistic if KB kills two dozen subs within a week if employed as an ASW vacuum cleaner as it would have been physically possible to set all (or most) KB bombers on ASW attack, even though noone would have ever thought of doing that in real life.
