Sir John,

We both know that your stress level will continue to climb until your court date in May. This PBEM and your 2x2 offer a source of stress relief to you. Lessons from this game are being used in your other game. I think I can safely say that we both play this game to have fun and learn. The outcome is no longer in doubt, but I hear the excitement in your voice when you report how effective your kamazikes strikes were even if you lose all those planes. KB is mostly intact and has at least another mission left in her.

I say fight on and see if Dan is willing to try to invade any part of the Home Islands.

John 3rd,

Do enjoy the snowfall and make sure to take a "deep breath."  And the answer to your question is this:  are you still having fun and/or getting something important out of continuting on with Dan, even with what looks like to you as a "hopeless" situation?  If not, throwing in the towel (after what looks like to me as a "great fight" with Dan) isn't a bad choice.  One thing to remember is this is a game, not the end of the world.  (And from your other posts, you've had to deal with much more significant issues than this.)  Also, I suspect you've got more WitP games in you after this one with Dan is over.   Most importantly, please be at peace with yourself, whatever you decide, and God Bless.  And definitely enjoy that snowfall!

I am an emotional sop and this email really touched me--THANKS! You are correct on nearly all accounts.

John, yeah you could be both but I doubt you are [:D]

As to my advice... Well it's like i tell my patients. "I promise to always give you an honest answer but that means you often won't like what I tell you."

In the end though we benefit more from good advice than pleasant advice... and so I make my choices accordingly.

As long as the 'treatment' is healthy I TOTALLY concur regarding advice! Excluding my Bi-Polarness I always enjoy/dread seeing a post from you!

The KB does have one Mission left and I have planned accordingly with100,000 Fuel and over 30,000 supply in Palau to replace my losses and fuel. Another 80,000 sits at Marcus ready for use fuel-wise. Lord help any shipping sailing across the Pacific with 20 CV on the lose! (that was some very weak fighting spirit)

I thoroughly expect to lose my Hearing on the 13th and then be in Jail. It is the GOOD fight though. My lovely and steadfast Paula will then post onto the AARs at that point to let everyone know.

tocaff -> RE: The Towel... (3/27/2009 8:14:02 PM)

John

It's good to prepare for the worst and then maybe get a huge & pleasant surprise.  It's good to have family stand by you when you need it the most.

Never throw in the towel in a game, or life, as long as there's "forlorn hopes".  You can offer a surrender and then only if accepted by your oponent will the game end.  It would be a crime to give up with the KB still at large only to be doomed to destruction at Bikini Atoll in an A bomb test.

EWGuttag -> RE: The Towel... (3/27/2009 10:02:22 PM)

John 3rd,

Glad to be of help.  All of us (that includes me) can be "emotional sops" when the stress level get's high enough about something we care about.  Last week, I was a "basket-case" about a particular appellate court decision that evidenced to me a naive and unrealstic view (yes, in "real life," I'm an attorney doing primarily patent application drafting); this week I realized even with that awful decision, there was still hope that justice might yet prevail when that case returns to the lower district court.  Keep your chin up and remember there's a difference between "victory" and "winning in life"; the latter is what counts.  Good hunting and Tallyho!

John 3rd -> RE: The Towel... (3/27/2009 10:19:13 PM)

It has been my experience over the last two years that JUSTICE is a "unique point-of-view" (as Sarek might say) and truth has little relevance.  I've been straight here and have been blessed with a number of friends through the Forum.  Dan, Michael, and Paul Layne have all seen various portions of my case and know the BS level that is associated with it.  I am preparing fro the worst and PRAYING for anything better.  So we shall see but that is six weeks from now...

Dan and I have had a pleasant email going back-and-forth today so he understands and is fully aware of things.

Nemo121 -> RE: The Towel... (3/28/2009 10:32:43 AM)

The key to the law and justice is that lawyers and judges "practice law" NOT justice.

Ideally there's a confluence between what laws prescribe and proscribe and what justice dictates but this isn't always so.

John 3rd -> RE: The Towel... (3/30/2009 3:40:56 AM)

Alright I have taken 3 days off and plan to renew the war but at a slower pace of a turn a day.  Don't know how long this will go but would like to get into 1945 and see the story unfold some more...

isn't that another reason not to throw the towel ? If you continue just a bit longer, you may hit the 100000 hit threshold [;)]

Thanks for the work to keep this an interesting read for so many of us.

crsutton -> RE: The Towel... (3/30/2009 10:02:33 PM)

Well, my two cents. This has been a great AAR by the both of you. I have learned a great deal about the game and its quirks by following your excellent reports. You can play on if you want but I think it is fine if you two decide to hang it up now. Its been fun.

I am soooooo.......ready for AE to come out.

Thanks.

John 3rd -> 12-8-44 (3/30/2009 10:17:45 PM)

This screenshot summarizes the action for the day. Over 150 Kamikaze and Escorts tried to the attack. NONE got through.

John 3rd -> 12-8-44 (3/30/2009 10:41:39 PM)

The Fleet is re-concentrated at Palau.  I have managed to rob enough supply to get the base up to 29,000 and so I've replaced losses as well as upgraded a few Daitai.  All ships are fully fueled with about 50,000 fuel left over.

The destination will next be Marcus.  It is my hope to get there undetected.  Will refuel there (100,000 waiting) and move into the Central/North Pacific.  The Fleet is still formidable and carries a good punch.  Perhaps I can find a couple of convoys and do some damage.

I will form the Fleet up into 4 TF and they will operate in one hex to start with and then split them into two pairs spread by about 4 hexes.  With the range of aircraft should enable me to cover a swath of about 16-18 hexes as we move...

Q-Ball -> RE: 12-8-44 (3/30/2009 11:04:02 PM)

That is the Bushido spirit! Reform and try again.

If you are thinking of throwing in the towell, at least go out in a blaze of glory; one last death-ride for the AAR!

pat.casey -> RE: 12-8-44 (3/31/2009 12:46:31 AM)

A raid on pearl of San Francisco might actually work as well; you have to assume he has most of his LBA forward deployed.

John 3rd -> Kaigun (3/31/2009 4:53:02 PM)

Here is the Fleet at Palau as it prepares to sail.

Only other real note is that a had a group of 16 Frances find a TF of LST a hex from Formosa with no Fighter Cover! Sank 3 LST and Torpped another. Not much but it is something for the day.

I've got a Scouting Line of 5 Glen-SS forming up east of Marcus...

Q-Ball -> RE: Kaigun (3/31/2009 5:06:46 PM)

John;

Can you give us an OOB of your operational CV's? I know you took some damage off India; what do you have in operational condition?

Why do you think you have so many CV's at this point? Is it because Dan has avoided CV battles, or you have?

My opponent in my late '44 will tell you that I have avoided head-on battles with US CV's, but I have hit invasion hexes numerous times with mixed results. I have probably lost my CV-air several times over at this point, and had to rebuild it.

bigbaba -> RE: Kaigun (3/31/2009 5:17:30 PM)

20 CV? wow. they must have 1200 or more AC on them! if you can surprise the allied with their pants down, then there emperor will have a reason to celebrate in tokoyo.[:D]

good luck, john san.

John 3rd -> RE: Kaigun (3/31/2009 5:28:54 PM)

The Fleet CVs consist of:
CV:  Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Taiho, Amagi, Unryu, Kasagi, Aso
CVL:  Ryujo, Chitose, Zuiho, Shoho, Ibuki, Ryuho, Hosho
CVE:  3

Aircraft complement is right about 1100.

My Fighters are pretty poor (55-70 EXP) but my bombers are rock solid with many in their 70s and a few in their 80s.

tocaff -> RE: Kaigun (3/31/2009 6:13:39 PM)

Go get 'em tiger!

A PH raid at this point in time?  Interesting, but what would be found there?  A transport hub for sure.  A SF raid is a bit to far away and would be a logistical nightmare.  I vote for the convoy hunt and a maybe for a shot at PH.

How many Japanese player can claim to have so much punch left so late in the game?

bigbaba -> RE: Kaigun (3/31/2009 6:29:49 PM)

i realy dont think that "comerce war" is worth risking your carriers. as i saw in another AAR, the allied have more AK/AP then they need in this stage of the war. so loseing some AK wont hurt them.

i would keep my CVs together and wait for the next allied invasion. then, i would use the carriers AND the LBA against the enemy. in this way, you may sink some transports with troops on them or even some carriers.

i would not seperate and risk the carriers for hunting AKs. he may spot you and hit your carriers while they are seperated. it may only work when you are 100% sure about the location of the main body of the allied carrier fleet.

look at the AAR of vettim. his japanese opponent tried to hunt allied transporters and lost half of his carrier fleet.

Panther Bait -> RE: Kaigun (3/31/2009 7:02:39 PM)

Unfortunately, it is often very hard to know where the next invasion will land in time to hit the transports on their way to the destination (at least with Japanese Sig Int).  Until John spots the invasion fleet, he has to keep the Kaigun at Palau, since it is one of the few, or only, bases apparently not in range of Allied search craft.  Unless the invasion is close to Palau, he will probably arrive too late, especially since Dan likes to move in quick, drop a bunch of troops and supply, then get the ships out just as quick.

And trying to interdict the invasions in the South China Sea would be almost certain suicide for little gain, since they amphib portions are just little 3-10 hex right hooks up the coast at the moment.  Maybe if Dan moved towards Java it would be worth it, but he shows no signs of going there right now.

The real Japanese tried several times to hit shipping on the way to an invasion with either surface ships (Leyte) or aircraft (Philippine Sea, Okinawa), but couldn't get things arranged in time.

Unless John gets lucky a commerce raid probably won't be a stunning success, but it will probably leave the bulk of the KB intact at the end for another try at something else.

John 3rd -> RE: Kaigun (4/1/2009 2:32:50 AM)

OK.  Good thinking.  Am going to work on a turn and shall see what happens.  Want to move a few aircraft squadrons on the CVs so I plan to remain another day before moving towards Marcus.

n01487477 -> RE: Kaigun Final Sortie? (4/1/2009 7:50:13 AM)

I really am surprised somewhat that Dan hasn't stopped your ability to bring in Res and Oil for the Southern Part of Borneo and Java ... I know he probably thinks he is doing great damage to your economy with bombing, but strangling the Res/Oil from these regions with a landing at Menado, Palau, Davao or even Tomini could have really have twisted the cord. Interesting decisions & it keeps you in it for a bit more...

I note you didn't do an economic review for this month, I guess you are extremely busy but if you'd like me to have a look & do some assessment pls. pass the file to Micheal (as you know I'm interested in the '44 econ data.)

Damian
