Magnus -> New Screen (2/17/2008 7:05:19 AM)

Hey guys

Just a new screen with new terrain Iīm testing. I think this looks better than the last screens shown. This has more a tabletop feel to it and everything stands out really good. What do you think?

Excellent work, looks fantastic.

jim pfleck -> RE: New Screen (2/18/2008 9:29:59 PM)

I think it is fantastic.  Great improvement!

Magnus -> RE: New Screen (2/18/2008 10:25:00 PM)

Altough it the terrain doesnīt look as complex I think this is the way to go. Everything can be seen easily and the game resembles more a tabletop. It is hard to add any kind of realistic grass at this scale, I think all just becomes a mess with "real grass". It seems like everyone here so far likes it, I really like it too :)

Panama Red -> RE: New Screen (2/19/2008 2:39:03 PM)

It definately looks like a real table top with green cloth as the grass, good job.[:)]

Magnus -> RE: New Screen (2/19/2008 5:21:07 PM)

Panama Red yes that was my intention. Now for the other seasons I have just changed the hue a little, for instance the "cloth" for fall has a more reddish/brown tone to it :) Now of course rest of the terrain features have the appropiate color, like the trees, hedges etc.

Now imagine having a table border around the playfield in the same angle as the hexes has. This would definitely put the game to the tabletop overall feel :) A nice idea here would be to have an arm coming from nowhere, well you wouldnīt see the rest of the body, just a part of the uniform and a hand like leaning towards the table at one of the edges, maybe different generals and depending on what side you choose you have that particular generals uniform. There could be four generals at each corner of the playfield like leaning towards :)

Sumter -> RE: New Screen (2/19/2008 7:16:36 PM)

The new artwork looks great.  I really dislike the idea of the general's arms, however.  That strikes me as just too busy.  Keep the appearance as clean as possible.

Sumter

Magnus -> RE: New Screen (2/19/2008 8:38:52 PM)

No worries Sumter, that idea I had wonīt get included anyway. Just speculating a little :)

e_barkmann -> RE: New Screen (2/20/2008 5:42:11 AM)

they did the arm thing with Tin Soldiers.  Just looked plain wrong IMHO.

cheers

sol_invictus -> RE: New Screen (2/20/2008 4:06:28 PM)

Yeah, I never really liked the arm thingy from Tin Soldiers. It just seemed pointless and distracting.

MacDuff -> RE: New Screen (2/22/2008 9:34:50 PM)

Mag,
What made you go with the circular hills?
Rick

Magnus -> RE: New Screen (2/22/2008 11:20:06 PM)

They were circular before too, or do you mean they looked more rough before? Like cliffs sort of?

MacDuff -> RE: New Screen (2/23/2008 5:01:25 PM)

In Prussia's Glory they were more conformed to the hexes.

However, in this release, if the editor will allow us to draw hills so the edges/slopes can be made to appear more irregular, so that they don't look like heses or circles, than I think we are going to end up with a very nice looking game.

Rick

Hentzau -> RE: New Screen (3/1/2008 9:41:07 AM)

Are there slight variations in the green shade of the grass for different height elevations in this screenshot? Hard to tell for me, but if there are they don't vary quite enough for my eyes.

Magnus -> RE: New Screen (3/1/2008 10:55:54 PM)

Yes their is slight variations in the green shades of the grass.

Capitaine -> RE: New Screen (3/3/2008 2:29:49 PM)

I hate to be the voice of dissension here, but the graphics look sort of muddy to me.  Especially that artillery unit (which didn't even appear to be artillery to me until I stared at it for awhile).

And I really don't like the circular look of the elevations.  Or the way terrain types seem confined to their hexagonal "cell", as opposed to being made to blend with adjoining hexes of the same type to appear as one large feature.  See the rocks and bushes.

There were some very nice earlier screenshots, but these don't seem as stylish or as clear as those.

Just another opinion to consider, by all means ignore it if it upsets you.

sol_invictus -> RE: New Screen (3/3/2008 6:58:11 PM)

I make the artillery out fine, but I am very experienced with these games. I certainly can see where the gun gets lost in the mix for some. I guess it is because it is almost completely bronze colored. Maybe the carriage could be made a different color for some contrast.

Magnus -> RE: New Screen (3/4/2008 10:25:19 AM)

The artillery unit is not the updated one, these are the old units from Prussian War Machine. Though the Prussian infantry in that screen is the updated ones which stand out better against the background.

Capitaine I think itīs great you have any opinion on the terrain, did you like the earlier terrain better? The more "real one"? Reason I did the terrain like this were because the first terrain made the actual terrain look too busy. So I tested this approach instead.

Capitaine -> RE: New Screen (3/4/2008 10:10:43 PM)

I did like the "real one" better, in fact.  I know that there was something about the zoom levels that you said compromised how clear the troops would look, so that was disappointing (rather not have zoom than fuzzy graphics).  I find the green here a little garish for my taste.  But I do understand where you're coming from in this approach.  Finding a working style is important in a project like this.

The buildings do look excellent though, FWIW. [:)]

Capitaine -> RE: New Screen (3/4/2008 10:15:06 PM)

Oh, and regarding the troops, I'd prefer to see the "line" extend more to the edges of the hex than to be eight men clumped in a "brick" in the middle of the hex.  The present depiction doesn't seem to convey linear formations to me.

sullafelix -> RE: New Screen (3/4/2008 10:35:48 PM)

I don't see a problem with the " clump " until the units are in busier terrain, than just being in clear terrain.

Grell -> RE: New Screen (3/4/2008 10:39:05 PM)

Hi Magnus,

I really like the terrain in the screen shot. It has a nice tabletop feel to it.[:)]

Regards,

Grell

Panama Red -> RE: New Screen (3/5/2008 12:22:37 AM)

It sounds like the "grass" mod may be one of the first things made after the game is released (no matter which version of grass Magnus uses). [:D]

Magnus -> RE: New Screen (3/5/2008 1:28:37 AM)

Actually here is a comparison, I have both sets of terrains done. So I am tinkering which one to go with before we go Gold. This is the more "realistic" look too it. I have tried to take on the same spot as the one before.

Still old Austrian units in that one, look at the Prussian units instead they are clearly visible against this background too as the more simplier tabletop looking terrain :) The Austrians isnīt rerendered yet with the new light setup, they will look 2-3x better than those Austrians :)
