Jonny -> 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/4/2008 9:44:26 PM)

Does anyone know the status? I read it's on hold but come on....we need a serious Russian Front game like WiTP.
Thanks,
Jon

Hertston -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/4/2008 10:16:36 PM)

Last I saw was this in the last dev journal (May 2007);

quote:

The final project to report on is our WWII Russian Front game. This project, which has been in mothballs for several years, is finally moving forward again. Keith is just now completing some programming tools that Gary needs in order to get that project moving again. Over the next few weeks we expect to see Gary transition from working full time on WBTS to spending most of his time on the Russian Front. As soon as WBTS is completed, both Gary and I will be spending almost all of our time on Russian Front until it is done. Now this is another monster of a game (hopefully not quite as big and nasty a monster as War in the Pacific), so it will take some time to complete. Of course we can't complete what we're not working on, so for those waiting for this game take heart that we're finally about to be working on it again. Can we finish it in 2008? That's a question we can't answer yet, but we should have a better idea by the end of 2007.

I agree, an update would be nice.

Terminus -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/4/2008 10:47:43 PM)

At the very earliest, 2009... Making something that big is a colossal undertaking...

Terminus -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/4/2008 11:00:09 PM)

And no, I don't actually KNOW anything, but a game this scale just transcends big...

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 12:19:02 AM)

I think that one would be the only babe that will be able to make me play anything else than witp...
I really think a game on that scale, involving the OstFront will make a HUGE new numbers of customers for Matrix...think about how much witp is worth for Matrix and now think how many new folks could this game bring here...the OstFront is defenetly the most liked theatre!!

histgamer -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 1:58:23 AM)

I think the east front might get the most buissness because its the least covered theater as far as grand stratagy goes. At least the least well covered.

histgamer -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 1:58:56 AM)

haha oh man could you imagine if you controled the industry for the russians or germans like you do the japanese in WITP.[X(][X(][X(]

Fred98 -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 2:06:24 AM)

The Eastern Front, done on the same scale as WiTP, would be too massive to play.

21 June 1941 - 8 May 1945 was 1,417 days!.  A game not exceeding 80 turns would make a good PBEM game.

In which case each turn would need to represent about 3 weeks.

I would limit stacking to no more than 2 units per hex. Any more and the game becomes too cumbersome!

As for map size, in the recent game, Commander Europe at War, the no. of hexes from Berlin to Moscow is 37. This could be increased to 50 hexes and the rest of the map adjusted proportionally.  But if the map was any bigger than that the game would be too cumbersome!

I wish to play the game 5 times from each side by PBEM before the next version of Windows makes the game unplayable! Thats 800 turns and would take 3 years.

Joe I take it you dont have or don't play WITP... Nothing is unplayable.[:D] I hope for this game to be a WITP on the east front.[&o][&o][&o]

I played a lot of Uncommon Valour and considere it one of the best wargames ever!

I got WiTP but never played it. I am a perfectionist and therefore it is more work than game to me.

This the first time I'm reading any update on EF!!! Glad to hear the project is still alive! Perhaps this year we could see some screenshots ?

Hanal -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 3:59:41 AM)

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the GG War in Russia game will be based on their WAW and  upcoming ACW game engine, meaning a large area map, not hex based.....

marcusm -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 9:29:51 AM)

What a huge mistake that would be.

Ursa MAior -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 10:30:52 AM)

Oh no. Another Heart of Iron? Hopefully it won't be real time at least. Like Gen Hoepner said a WitP style grand strategy Oatfront would be a blockbuster IMHO. Or maybe, definitely maybe a turn based heart of iron say with 3-7 dy turns kinda like good ol' War in Russia. Based on WIR/PW experience I was hoping they would use the WitP engine.

Grell -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 1:36:08 PM)

Well I'll believe it when I see it.

Regards,

Grell

Good lord, no! That WOULD be unplayable.

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 2:05:40 PM)

I don't think it would be unplayable T.... a game for Grognards, that would be!
However i think GG should capitalize the whole experience of Wir, which was a great game, and of witp (the two massive games he's done).
Wir however was a game based on "army corps", while i'd like to see a game on a divisional level.
probably a 5 days turn should be fair...but we all want a MASSIVE game, you know...
I won't buy anything like HOI...and i repeat that i really think a witp like game based on OstFront will be a great best seller for Matrix

Terminus -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/5/2008 2:06:53 PM)

Make no mistake. I'd LIKE a new East Front game, but I don't want to take on another monstrosity like WitP/AE... A week-long turn would have to be a minimum.

I am also looking forward to this game. I don't mind compexity but maybe some stuff like supply distribution could have been made easier. Production is OK to be complicated.

When you consider that they said each hex is 10 miles across I would doubt that. I have a suspicion that the game may be playable as daily turns, such as WITP, due to the hexes being so small.

That would be a 240 turn PBEM game.

Its impossible for developers to balance a game of that length.

It would take more than 500 days to play a 240 turn PBEM game. Then another 500 days to turn around and play the other side.

That would be a great shame!

A remake of AH:s Russian Front would be perfect for me.
Just the right level for me.

Not true (in terms of the area-based map).

Music to my ears!!!

marcusm -> RE: 2by3 Russian Front Game? (3/6/2008 8:00:38 PM)

Phew here too. Thanks Erik.

I didn't buy Witp but this is a no brainer if it truelly is a sequel to WiR.

Pacific War isn't as interesting as European theatre. Though I did get Uncommon Valor from SoM so I might change my opinion :).
