That's all for this trip. I do have other pictures from my trip 2 years ago, but this covered the vast majority of the AFV's. There is a lot of artillery as you can see in the background, but by the time we hit that area Dylan and I were quite willing to just take a quick look as we passed by. Inside is a large display of infantry weapons, rifles, smg's, mortars, etc.

Very interesting place. Well worth a visit. Hope you enjoyed the pictures, and thanks for the replies to my "watizzit's".

Edit: I did go thru the Patton museum, but that was back in the mid-70's. I plan on getting out and seeing a lot of the sights and museums. Have toured the Lexington in Corpus Cristi, Texas, the Yorktown, Laffey and a sub in Charleston, South Carolina, and of course the Missouri back in 69 before they moderized her. That was in Bremerton, Washington, and they still had several gun cruisers and such there, but not open for tours. Toured most of the major Civil War battlefields while stationed at Quantico, Virginia in the 70's and during cross-country trips.

Still, so much to see.

They still have the twin 88's, but I didn't get a picture as I was getting low on photostick memory...might find it in the background of some of the shots tho. They still have the MK III open. It looks like I have to buy a photo editing program, as the one provided by microsoft only provides for cropping and I have to crop off too much of the picture. I need to resize them to get them under the 200k limit. More after a shopping trip.

My favourite is irfanview. Free of charge of course.

I use Infaview for some things, but for batch resizing of pictures, the best I've found is PicSizer: http://www.axiomx.com/picsizer.htm

My father gave me a Nikon D70, which is a fantastic camera, but the smallest picture it will take is still too large for most online like Ebay or posting here. I launch Picsizer and just let it do its thing on a folder.

The vehicle behind the Brummbär is my favourite stupid vehicle of WWII. It's a German Jagdpanzer (I forget the name), but notice the crane along the side of its hull? It was intended to detach its turret and place it on a prepared concrete pillbox! I wish I was kidding...[8|]

It looks like you guys had a great time! I have always wanted to visit Aberdeen, but have not been there yet. Thanks for posting the pictures.

I really enjoyed the pics of the Panther D & G as well as the Marder III, the Panzer III & IVs, the Hornisse, Jadgpanther, Brummbar and the StuG IIIs. Man! I've got to get up there soon!

Well, it is nice to see them refurbishing some of them. However, a pity to see so many in poor shape.

If I was king of the US, there would be some funding alloted to get them under cover at least.

Of course, if I was the king of the US, I would have many better things to do than post here---and, all of your taxes would be much higher..[X(]

DD, Thank you so much for sharing! I lived and worked at Pax River Naval Air Station in the '90s and never did get a chance to go to Aberdeen for anything other than a high school football game. [:(] Missed opportunity. I did get to all the civil war battlegrounds in the surrounding states though. Like you said, so much more to see!

Correct. Elefant came first, had no MG's. Then Ferdinand.

According to Walter Spielberger's profile:

'The new unit received the official designation Panzerjager Tiger (P) Elefant (SdKfz 184). Originally called "Ferdinand" after its designer, Dr Ferdinand Porsche, its official designation was "Elefant".'

So it appears that Ferdinand was the first name applied to the vehicle. Two battalions of these tank destroyers (some 90 vehicles) were committed to the attack on the north flank of the Soviet salient at Kursk in the Germans' 1943 summer offensive. The lack of a bow MG severely hampered their ability to defend against Soviet infantry (I have heard it suggested that crews had to resort to firing automatic weapons down the bore of the main armament!). Those recovered from the Kursk battlefield were retrospectively fitted with the bow MG for self-defence that is visible in the photos; thereafter some were sent to Italy.

The vehicle was highly unusual (?unique) in that it used electric transmission. In effect it was in competition with a Henschel design as a platform for an 8.8 cm-gunned tank. In the event, the Henschel design eventually went into production as the much better known PzKpfw VI Tiger 1.

I suggest that the PzKpfw IV shown at posts 129-131 is an Ausf. F2 model: the first to mount a long-barrelled 7.5 cm main gun that is distinguishable from later 'seventy-fives' by its single baffle muzzle brake. The different, double baffle brake of later weapons is apparent in the 'rarity' at post 145: a truly weird machine apparently sporting drive sprockets at front and rear! I assume that the front sprocket (the drive sprocket on the standard production model) is, in fact, free turning, and that drive is imparted by the entirely non-standard rear sprockets connected to the experimental hydraulic transmission.
