So with all the expertise on bicycles here on the Thread, is there any recommendation for a bike for me. I rode avidly (thirty miles a day thru the late 80's , but stopped upon marriage-my wife didn't ride-I taught her at age 26-It was very, very ugly!) My last ride was a 27' Raliegh 12 speed (I'm really dating myself) and have had people suggesting some form of mountain bike as there are a lot of trails in this area, but DC metro is second to only LA for bad traffic (pretty much eliminating road riding). [&:]

if your going to be on the streets alot you may want to consider a hybrid vs. a bonafide mountain bike.

I'm sure I know the general sentiment, but what does that stand for?

Putting Thor Hushovd right up there in the pantheon of cool names. Great cyclist or norweigan porn star? It works for both.

A fun day to watch!  [8D]

I'm disappointed of Gerald Ciolek's performance. I hope he'll manages to win at least one stage!

As a guy who only weighed 118 lbs when I was racing, I have always loved watching riders like Alberto Contador. It is amazing to see a fellow accelerate past the other great riders on a steep pitch like that. Allez Alberto!

Steve... if you have friends who you might be riding with it would be good to talk to them to see what they're riding. If they're all on road bikes, you'll have a devil of a time trying to keep up with them on a mountain bike - but nothing else can really be used on the mountain bike trails.

If you're going to be riding the paved bike paths on the Virginia side, then a road bike would be best but if you're going to pound the off road trails it would be a bad choice. I'm not a fan of hybrids except for commuting - they're a compromise that do not stand up to real off road riding and so make for sluggish road bikes. They're tough enough for city commuting or cruising, but not as lively on long road rides as a real road bike. However, a hybrid should be good enough for the C&O towpath.

If you're going for a true off road bike, a hardtail will give more bang for the buck, but a full suspension will ease the pounding on the old body. At my advanced age, I find that I can ride much longer with less fatigue on a full suspension machine than on a hardtail.

Figure out what your reasonable budget is, and then buy the best bike that fits you physically and fits your style of riding from a bike shop that you can trust. I like Mt Airy Cycles up in Maryland (sister shop is College Park Bicycles, but my friend Steve Hoover is/used to be the manager up at Mt Airy), but there are some good shops in Virginia and DC as well.

Nikademus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/10/2009 5:42:42 PM)

having owned one for years....i agree with you about hybrids. Having one "wheel" in both catagories (road and off road) it does neither as good as a dedicated bike.

Unfortunately many people don't have the budgets to splurge on having two bikes. I only did that myself when i first moved out to Seattle in 92. I had a hybrid (not realizing at the time that it was one....i thought it was a "mountain bike") and i'd picked up a relic road bike. An old heavy Schwinn cruiser. It was a big piece of iron with "only" 10 speeds....but man once you got that thing up to speed....the weight really allowed you to "cruise" long distances as long as the grades wern't too steep. I loved it though ultimately i gave it away in favor of the hybrid because of Seattle's steep steep hills in the downtown area. The Schwinn was a killer there.

118 pounds???!!! Damn...and the GF thought i was a beanpole at 150!

bradfordkay -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/10/2009 5:51:57 PM)

You didn't notice the "when I was racing" part of the post. I'm now around 150... twenty five to thirty years later.
In races I would get dropped on the descents, but could hang on with just about anyone in the southeast on a long steep climb. And I wasn't a serious racer - I used it as training for touring. It was touring that brought me out here from Georgia - in 1985 two college buddies and I drove to Seattle to ride our bikes from there to Savannah, Georgia. That was a fun trip!

HMS Resolution -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/10/2009 5:54:17 PM)

Gol dang, but now I feel like a big ol' fattie.

Nikademus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/10/2009 6:05:34 PM)

me too......

Since Termy continues to insist on projecting his own issues onto me, i'll come clean.

At the specialist yesterday i weighed in at 190 fully clothed, sneakered and with additional items in the pockets (you can see i'm already making excuses)

I was not happy. Instead of the 10 or so pounds i could stand to lose its looking more like at least 15. (175 would be an ideal weight according to my doc) GF unit, being her usual blunt self has told me repeatedly that it ain't ever gonna happen no matter how much excercising i do (which includes having gotten back on the bike as well as the saddle + weights) as long as i keep drinking beer. She may be right. It sucks to have to make such choices. You never appreciate one's lost youth as much as you do when you realize that the days where you could eat and drink anything and not gain an ounce are gone forever.

I have a friend who used to bartend who told me that he knew a guy who all he did was simply stop drinking beer and he immediately dropped 20 pounds. (i assume he was in his 30's) sigh. I guess beer is my kryptonite. I have cut back a little but still tend to frequent the pub 3x a week with book, highlighter and pencil in hand.

HMS Resolution -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/10/2009 6:11:02 PM)

I don't drink, but when I gave up soda, I fell from 200 pounds to about 180. I'm about 170 or so now, but at 5'9" I could stand to lose a little more. Curse my stocky hibernian ancestors!

Nikademus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/10/2009 6:14:21 PM)

same height, so you are better off than me. Frame wise i'm middle of the road. I was slight when i was in my 20's but near the end of that i filled out. (nicely according to GF who considers my beanpole era to be ugly!)

Unfortunately for me, i could use a couple inches more in the torso area to make the weight distribution look better. My brother (who is 2 inches taller than me) got that but i got the thick full head of hair so i think i came out slightly ahead in the genes dept! No rogaine needed for me!

Dropping soda got me from 190 to 165 in about six months. I'm 6'2" so beanpole is probably the right word.

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/10/2009 7:00:35 PM)

I'm 6'1", and still just over 200, but down recently from around 215.  When I was doing triathlons regularly, I was a solid 185.  That's my goal again.  (No bean pole here) [;)]

That's why I love bicycle racing, especially the grand tours. It's one of the few sports where being a small guy can actually be an advantage! [8D]

I hope that you get your mountain bike soon - it's good to have a bike for each purpose. Just make sure that you take care of the bearings after riding in all that snow and mud. Those conditions are murder on a bike, even a mountain bike...

Well, each extra kg needs 6 watt to be pushed uphill, so you'd made me look really bad...

On the other hand, we might try an ITT on a flat course [;)]

I need to be better about that. I hate diet soda but fully eliminating reg soda would be the easiest means of cutting calories. Coke Zero is almost tolerable i guess.
