Before I sign off, I wanted to ask the collective wisdom of THE THREAD your thoughts on the best books on the war in Burma and Slim's campaign to retake the Malaya.

I have Shore's "Bloody Shambles" series on the air war.  I am nearly finished with book 3.  I have Bayly and Harper's "Forgotten Armies" which I am reading in parallel with the Shore series.  Finally, I have Winton's "The Forgotten Fleet" of which I have only read the first chapter; I am waiting to catch-up in time in the other two books.

Your thoughts?
thanks,
mike

Slim's Defeat into Victory is an excellent book. He's surprisingly open about his mistakes and has some very good analysis of the IJA's strengths and weaknesses. I read Slim's and Monty's memoirs back-to-back. The difference between the two books is jarring to say the least.

Thanks. I will give it a try.

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 6:54:11 PM)

So far, I am the proud owner of 35%, no, 36% of AE.  [:D]

AW1Steve -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 7:33:19 PM)

I'm the proud owner of 100% non functioning AE. [:(] So that puts me at 50/50. I own four Matrix games, two work , two don't.

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 7:36:46 PM)

Steve, what isn't working?  Does the installer not work properly?  Have you tried re-downloading yet?

anarchyintheuk -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 7:38:18 PM)

Waiting on promo code fu . . . . starting to get a bit twitchy.

Probably have a dozen matrix games. All of them work, more or less.

AW1Steve -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 7:40:34 PM)

I've reinstalled twice, and re-downloaded. It's balky,cranky and won't let me select buttons. On the the rare occassion it accepts my button push , it takes up to five minutes to comply. I can not scroll accross the map, half the time the graphics don't display. But the music plays real nice! [:D] Maybe when my hard copy shows up I can correct it.

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 7:42:56 PM)

Have you tried removing the video and sound? NOVIDEO and NOSOUND?

anarchyintheuk -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 7:43:14 PM)

You missed the section requiring animal sacrifices to download correctly.

Thanks for the reminder, T. I need to do that before I fire it up at my desk at work. [:D]

I'm sorry Kristan, I'm not sure what you are asking. Remove it from where? The game file?

Steve, try finding the Video and Sound folders under AE, and rename them to Novideo and Nosound. The game will then run without them. I've not seen the beginning video or heard any sounds from WitP in forever.

Edit: This has fixed a lot of people's issues over the years.

Many a player of stock has been plagued by bad performance from this. Go into your AE folder and find the subfolders VIDEO and SOUND. Rename them to NOVIDEO and NOSOUND, then try and start the game.

No guarantee it'll work, but it can't hurt you in your current position.

AW1Steve -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 7:48:19 PM)

I'll give it a try!

AW1Steve -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 7:52:43 PM)

No joy guys, but thanks for trying! [:(]

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 7:53:38 PM)

Sorry Steve, that sucks.

That will still happen. I've been watching the historical first turn play out, and then taking a gander over the map. AI POUNDED my ships at Pearl! [X(] 6 BB's sunk and 2 more over 80% flotation damage.

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 9:12:33 PM)

My initial thoughts were to keep my PBEM CHS game with Mynok going while we both get our feet wet in the AE Sea, but I suspect it will quickly become confusing to try to switch back and forth between the two versions.

AW1Steve -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 9:25:21 PM)

My thanks to T,Mike and Bobo. I can run the AE game more or less normally in window mode. As I was reading the Readme, there is also a -Dual mode for any one that has dual quad (like me). Strangley enough , that didn't help me. Again , many thanks guys![&o]

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (7/27/2009 9:26:35 PM)

Great news, Steve!  [:)]

At first glance, it sure looks purty! [8D]

Parole - Tithe. [&o][&o][&o]

Time to go home and play.  [8D]
