31) What was the largest operational tank in WWII? Meaning, which was the largest tank ever ordered into combat in WWII. Panzer Maus. There were two prototypes of the Maus at Kummersdorf to the southeast of Berlin. One was a vehicle mockup without a gun. The other was fully functional. The fully functional vehicle was ordered to move to Berlin and defend the capital. The Soviets claim to have knocked it out in combat and the Germans claim it broke down. Either way the Soviets have the vehicle at Koblinka Tank Museum I believe.

Hmm, I would say the premise of this question is questionble. There have been exhaustive research(thank the miniature panorama ppl) done into the Maus and it was found it was never actually certified as operational. That would require that the inspector of the panzerwaffen to sign it off. There is no evidence of that. It has been proven as far as possible it never saw combat and the "order" to move to Berlin has been proved questionble too. More likely it was ordered to move. In order to avoid being captured by advancing russian forces.
My gist is use of the specific word: operational in this context is not correct, in respect to the given answer.

That's why I put ordered into combat. The source I have shows the Maus ordered to move to the defense of Berlin.

22) Who in the German Army was simply known as "The Count"?

Cant remember the name of hand(its long as hell), but clues for others is that he later was made inspector of the panzerwaffen.
In 1941 he is credited with after his tank is knocked out, to have single handely being armed with only a pistol turning back a russian armored "attack" and saving his crew.

24) How many Soviet Tank and Mechanized Corps were there from 1942 to the end of the war? Counting Guards units as well.

Counting counters in Europe the board game produce these numbers. Note some are renamed Guard and isnt counted twice. Tank corps 25, Mech 14 including those that never saw combat.

25) The United States had how many cavalry divisions during WWII?

2 or could be 3 IIRC.

Well, 2 or 3 could be correct IIRC....or maybe not. I'm looking for a bit more specific answer....lol....

quote:

34) What two hammer blows were triggered on the anniversary of Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union? They were the same year and were set to compliment each other.

Bagaration launched 22 june 1944 and D-Day.

Kind regards,

Rasmus

34) You are correct. It was Operation Bagratin and D-Day.

Good Hunting.

31) What was the largest operational tank in WWII?

...

37) What does the word Currahee mean and who used it as a battlecry?

...

Good Hunting.

MR

31: Either the Japanese O-I Super Heavy tank (120t, 3 turrets), while it was experimental, one was shipped to Manchuria where it is unknown if it became operational, or more likely, the German Tiger II (69.8t), 487 built.

37: During their training, the US 506th PIR of the 101st Airborne were ordered to climb Mt Currahee (Cherokee for "We Stand Alone"); the name of this mountain became their battlecry.

quote:

Japanese O-I Super Heavy tank

31) The Maus was larger than the O-I heavy tank. The Maus weighed in at 188 tons while the O-I was a light weight at 130 tons.

37) That is correct. I've added your answer to the main list.

Good Hunting.

Incidentally, seeing as this is a WWII quiz forum in a set of forums about a WWII game, carried out by people who are at least moderately knowledgeable about the Second World War, is there any chance we could drop the colloquial use of the term "D-Day" for the Normandy landings? [;)]

brian brian -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (4/9/2009 12:04:43 AM)

Wouldn't #25 depend on how you define "Calvary" divisions? The last US calvary regiment to use horses served in the Phillipines until the first few months of 1942. After that certain mechanized/armored formations may have been called "Calvary", as some still are, such as the 1st Cav at Fort Hood. So there were zero horse calvary divisions serving with the US Army in WWII. When other sorts of divisions were again called "Calvary", I don't know.

Is there then any reason why we shouldn't drop both "D-Day" and "Normandy Landings" for the much more correct Operation Overlord?

Yes, because as an American I am used to things being short and fast. D-Day is shorter and faster than either of the other two terms....

I could care less what you call it. All three arre correct.

The question was not how many US Divisions used horses in WWII. The question is how many Cavalry Divisions was in the US Army in WWII. That's a straight forward question that has a very finite answer.

Then I try with another early fighter. P-40?

Just a note about the Brewster Buffalo. It is my imprsssion that the Buffalo got its bad reputation because it was less manuverable than the Zero. But one must remember that the Japanese Zero was one on the most agile planes of WWII.
