In 1961 a movie about a spy was produced in France in collaboration with West Germany, Italy and Japan. This movie was very popular in the Soviet Union as well. In the movie, the spy was played by Thomas Holtzmann. In 1964 Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev saw the film and asked the KGB whether the story was true. When it was confirmed that it was indeed true, Khrushchev posthumously awarded the spy with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on November 5, 1964. In addition his widow Hanako Ishii received a Soviet pension until her death in july of 2000.

What was the name of the spy?

I know of two famous spies from WWII. The Japanese connection re the film must make the answer to this question, Richard Sorge, but I'm afraid I have no idea about the other three questions.

Richard Sorge is correct. [;)]



His GRU codename was "Ramsay".

The name of the movie was Qui êtes-vous, Monsieur Sorge? (Who Are You, Mr. Sorge?)

The name of the Polish comic book based on his life (published in 1971) was "Wywiadowca XX wieku" ("20th Century Spy").

He was hung at Sugamo Prison on November 7, 1944 at 10:20 am Tokyo time.

Nope, Rudolf Roessler cannot be Lucy.

The Lucy spy ring was an anti-German operation that was headquartered in Switzerland. It was run by Rudolf Roessler.

Very little is clear about the Lucy ring, Rudolf Roessler, or Lucy's sources or motives.


If brian brian wanted to know about the spy ring he would have posted "What was Lucy?" not "Who was Lucy?".

yes, I look forward to the day when historians figure out Roessler's source inside Germany

with WWII information, more things have been revealed so far by the Russians than the British or Americans...

Nope, Rudolf Roessler cannot be Lucy.

Correct she is a US BB, she was struck at Pearl Harbor and by a Kamikazee on August 13, 1945. After survivng two atomic blasts in Operation Crossroads on July 1 & 25, 1946 she was towed to Kwajalien and scuttled February 10, 1948.

Her log reports the men as stating they were the first ship to return fire on December 7, 1941.

Mostly sure -- I have two different sources putting this vessel in Operation Crossroads -- and it's not the Nevada or the Arkansas, and from my previous clue it isn't the West Virginia.

During WWI she was not sent to join the British Grand Fleet as she and the Nevada were the first two oil burning US Battleships and no tankers could be spared to be sent to the British Isles. ( those guys must have been playing Convoys in Flames)

Operation Crossroads

The target fleet of 95  vessels included four obsolete U.S. battleships, two aircraft carriers, two cruisers, eleven destroyers, eight submarines, numerous auxiliary and amphibious vessels, and three surrendered German and Japanese ships. The ships carried sample amounts of fuel and ammunition plus scientific instruments to measure air pressure, ship movement, and radiation. The live animals on some of the target ships were supplied by support ship USS Burleson, which brought 200 pigs, 60 guinea pigs, 204 goats, 5,000 rats, 200 mice, and grains containing insects to be studied for genetic effects by the National Cancer Institute. Amphibious target ships were berthed on Bikini Island.

She survived both atomic blasts at Bikini Atoll. I thought it was interesting that she was damaged on the first day of the war and 2 days before the last day of the war without other serious damaged in between.

If it is from 1941 i suspect it is one of the 4 Iowa class battleships.
