And the sector to the east of the last one:

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T43 (12/17/2008 4:59:19 PM)

There were only two combat rounds in Axis turn 43 so I destroyed only 5 Soviet units: 4 infantry types and 1 naval unit. Here's the Axis losses so far:

Here's what the front lines look like at the beginning of Axis turn 44:

Hey Curt:

Congratulations ! You seem to have contained the armies of the Third Reich. It seems that every hole I make you plug up right away. Leningrad is a fortress, Moscow seems safe, the south is contained.......there aren't any good places left to attack. Good job.

Here is where the game sortof changes character. Whereas the early turns saw rapid movement and lots of losses, now the game takes on the WWI style of play where a handfull of hexes changes hands back and forth several times and gains are measured in single hexes gained per turn. At least that's been my experience in earlier games.

You've even surpassed me in terms of fighters aloft [see attached picture showing Soviet air superiority larger than Axis AS ]. It's looking like it's all downhill for the Axis side. I may even have to go on the defensive soon, at least for the duration of the winter season.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T44 (12/18/2008 12:33:14 PM)

So um...........quick question......This Soviet arty unit is in the orange so it's readiness is probably somewhere in the 30's range say 33%. So does that mean that I have to calculate in my head what 33% of it's 8 attack factor is left for ground suppport or does the 8 on the unit graphic mean that 8 is 33% of whatever the unit originally had to attack/defend with? Just a thought.

Karri -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T44 (12/18/2008 2:15:06 PM)

8 is the current attack/defence modifier, with all the other things already applied. As you lose supply/readiness/equipment the numbers change.

However those numbers really matter at all...at least that is what I have noticed.

I think you may mean However those numbers DON'T really matter at all. Is that right?

Yes, seems that I am about to develope dyslexia. :)

Did you ever hear the one about the Agnostic who had dyslexia and insomnia?  He used to lay awake at night wondering if there really is a dog.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T44 (12/19/2008 1:22:12 AM)

I'm close to sneaking up on Kalinin but he has lots of reinforcements coming up the rail line so I may not be able to capture it anytime soon.

I've noticed those mini-movies don't seem to cover as much ground as they used to ;)

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T45 (12/21/2008 10:28:49 PM)

Curt is correct in that the minimovies seem to have slowed down in the progress of the Axis forces. The charactor of the game has changed in that the rapid movement and great loss of units is over with for the most part and a great struggle over a handfull of hexes per turn is the norm now. Here's the moves minimovie from turns 41 throu 45:

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T45 (12/21/2008 10:34:33 PM)

In the northernmost sector in the lower righthand corner a handfull of Soviet hexes were grabbed by the Axis. And that's about all the changes that happened here. Fighting is still severe in the Leningrad area it's just that the superior Soviet arty is preventing any meaningful gains by the Axis.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T45 (12/21/2008 10:41:13 PM)

In the next sector to the south we see the Axis trying to widen some holes in the line. Right of center in the lower part of the shot we see the Axis forces capture Kalinin but the Soviets will probably get it back in their turn. Soviet reinforcements are still embarked on the rail but they will surely be employed in Curt's turn.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T45 (12/21/2008 10:46:37 PM)

Not much changes near Moscow. Fighting is fierce in that the Axis is trying to create holes and surround units and the Soviets are doing their best to prevent it. The goal is still to capture Moscow by the end of '41 but it doesn't look like that is an ubtainable goal. Well maybe in early '42 or so.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T45 (12/21/2008 10:53:15 PM)

In the Bryansk / Orel / Tula area we see perhaps the beginning of a good surround on some Soviet units. There isn't much progress by the Axis forces in the lower left of this shot because of the dominance of Soviet arty in the area. Perhaps the Axis can swing some forces down there and sneak up on that arty from the east.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T45 (12/21/2008 10:57:03 PM)

In the Kursk area we see the steady pressure on the Soviet line as it's pressed upward and to the right. A couple of small holes are produced in the lines elsewhere here and there. Soviet reinforcements are still embarked in boxcars but they will probably be disembarked and employed in Curt's turn.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T45 (12/21/2008 11:01:42 PM)

In the Kharkov area we see the Axis forces trying vainly to get a foothold across the Donetz River. It's not happening because of a shortage of units and the lack of arty support. This situation is reminecent of the Kiev river crossing and the struggle that was.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T45 (12/21/2008 11:05:21 PM)

And in the southernmost sector we see two separate Panzer thrusts attempting to force a hole in the Soviet lines. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Curt vs Larry FITE T46 (12/23/2008 5:41:01 AM)

Here's the major portion of the front lines as of round 3 of Axis turn 46: you'll notice some gaping holes. And the irregular-shaped line itself is what happens when you make a hole and the Soviet dude plugs it in his turn.
