With high exp Kates from KB that drop laser guided bombs from 26.000ft which is above flak range in Nikmod... but of course this is a very rare happening as I can´t always move KB somewhere to bomb a base... why Kates have a 5 times higher accuracy in bombing than other IJN bombers is beyond my understanding. The Betty drops the same number of bombs but can´t hit anything, even when equally skilled... oh those miracles of Mr. Grigsby... As mentioned above, here comes the joke of the day. And again, I have to use the word stupid. The DD was hit by a 20mm Oerlikon! Any comments on the damage? It´s a funny game and no all the Allied fanboys are right, PTs aren´t overrated... lol, a 20mm Oerlikon hit. Glad the DD wasn´t hit twice, as it would sink then... You know, having served on destroyers -and watched sink ex's where equivelant guns have been used -Im not that surprised at a DD having that sort of damage -if a great long burst went marching along the length of you -but the game does'nt tell us that. One shell -impossible damage -a burst into say a boiler room -yep! (then again a single 20mm into the main steam crossover Vv in one engine room would have brought my last ship to a terible halt really, reall quick[X(][8\|][;)]

i remember an UV AAR in which a japanese barge managed to heavily damage a US sub with a single 20 or 25 mm MK hit. later in the day, the sub went down. that may be a kind of "lucky punch"...like a fighter takeing down a B-17 with a 7.7mm MG burst.

on the other side you see subs hitting mines and the next day crash diving in front of a 6 DD ASW TF... oh well, as a Japanese player I´m used to losing my whole DD fleet to PTs anyway. Has always been so, will never be different in WITP.

So without having his airbase on Timor he won´t have 300 fighters that he could put on Cap to see 250+ in the air and this means he would have to use his carriers to cover such a big style resupply attempt. And this would again mean I would throw in everything I can. The piece meal attacks near Noumea on the enemy carriers were a disaster but around Timor I have several airbases that could launch strikes against carriers near Lautern and with hundreds of ac in the area I´m sure I could cause trouble as long as the enemy is mostly flying F4Fs. We will see... the enemy carriers are expected to be still near Noumea and it will take some time to move them into position, if Miller even wants to do that. But it seems he´s convinced that my 2nd attack on Timor is only a matter of days, the sigint he gets about my divs planning for Australian targets can´t bluff him I guess. AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/27/42 Miller proved to be extremely lucky this turn again IMO. While he has been flying constant air attacks against Dili day after day after day... he stopped TODAY!!!!! Why? Heck, because I have set 440 fighters to LRCAP the damned base to intercept the enemy. What flew in? Only a couple of Catalinas to do recon over the base and to show Miller that there are 100+ Japanese fighters over Dili! The bombardments have worn down two of my divisions. They are completely shredded! There´s not a single gun combat ready anymore, only inf and support squads, everything else is disabled and both divisions are down to 50-60/95. Which means both divs are wrecked and not combat worthy anymore! Great. What´s even a bigger shock is the fact that both divisions stay at 80% disruption and this is something I´ve never seen before! The 5 art units cause two of my divisions to fight at only 20% of their remaining strenght and that´s more than depressing, as more than a dozen of my art units in China achieve nothing. But the Allied are bogged down here and if Miller isn´t doing the right things, then I will kill those 5 or 6 Allied divisions on Timor together with the art units and the base forces... We have an interesting discussion, again I hope Miller doesn´t mind me posting his email and my reply. Miller: Evening. I know most IJN subs get an increase in durability to make them less likely to die against allied ASW in this mod. However, I was puzzled at how poor my ASW was until I looked at the weapons stats...........the allied DC's have had their depth rating reduced to less than the IJN....ridiculous! Basically it means your subs are immune to attack in deep water hexes, unless they meet a TF containing 12+ DDs......... Well, I didn´t understand that at all so I´ve looked up the stats in the editor and replied: Hmm, never heard of that and I couldn´t find anything about that in the readme of the mod. And from my experience I can´t confirm that either, I had never anything like immune IJN subs, no matter if I was playing the IJN or Allied side. Let´s see, all stats from the editor: IJN subs durability 30-33 with the highest classes at 36. USN fleet subs durability 30 with the highest being the Balao class with 40. Depth charges: IJN Type 91 effect 220 Type 95 effect 325 Type 2 effect 357 USN MK6 effect 300 MK7 effect 700 MK7m1 effect 600 MK9 effect 200 (with a three times higher accuracy than the IJN types) All Allied depth charges have a better accuracy. Why you think that the Allied depth charges were reduced to half of the IJN is beyond me, in fact they mostly have DOUBLE the effect with a higher accuracy than the IJN depth charges. This together with the common ASW rating of a USN DD of 6 vs a IJN DD with 4 makes one USN DD 3 (in words: THREE) times as effective as an IJN DD. And the British DDs are worth 4 times an IJN DD. IJN subs aren´t any harder to sink in this mod than in stock. this was yesterday evening and I haven´t looked for turns since then but I´m excited to read Miller´s reply. [;)]

Why? Because in the morning phase the staging base (Wyndham) of the 4Es was clouded and therefor they didn´t attack right after the Lightnings when we still had 190 fighters in the air. In the afternoon, weather was better, the bombers attacked and our Cap level was back at was it usually is - at best around 50%. The bombers are met by 136 IJA fighters and many turn back but morale surely was high within the Allied bomber groups as they only turned back in small numbers like 3-5 bombers each time. Watching the replay I was sure that the fighters won´t be able to defend the base and there will surely be a lot of bombers dropping their bombs on the base. The losses of the 4E bombers are depressing again, even though more than those shot down immedietely during the replay are lost a2a in the end... For example, only TWO of the 78 damaged B-24 crashed after the replay. 6 more B-17 (out of 101 damaged) and 5 LB-30 (out of 25 damaged) crashed after the replay. The around 80-90 bombers that attack the base kill 20 fighters on the ground, the base ends the turn with only 22 remaining damage to the airbase, the runways are repaired immediately. My problem stays mainly the same even if it didn´t turn out to be catastrophic today. There are just too many fighters staying on the ground, this means there are more bombers coming through, less being shot down and more fighters are destroyed on the ground. But it could have gone FAR worse also today, so there´s no reason to really complain I gues... One arrived and the other two should arrive within tomorrow. We encounter a Chinese corps and two base forces, there must also be a HQ because recon tells us that there are four units at the base but HQ units don´t show up during the replay. It´s a clear hex, there are hopefully not max fort numbers and the hex is surely perfectly supplied as Chengtu is the most important supply base for the Chinese. So with three bgds it will be a tough fight I guess, I fear the base will hold. Chengtu has 300 resources and also a couple of hundred auto supply so moving to this base is essential for the war in China because even if we don´t take the base, we stop the supply generation from the resource center (the autosupply still arrives) but none of the supply will flow out of the base anymore. This means the Chinese lost another 600 (I guess) supplies each day from yesterday on when my first unit entered the hex. So I estimate the remaining supply being 600-700 each day for the rest of China and 20.000 supplies each month is probably not enough to even feed the 500.000+ Chinese troops in the remaining Central and West China bases. One year of war and the news agencies report another Japanese success! If you can remember, many weeks ago, one of our subs attacked the heavily damaged heavy cruiser Exeter West of Broome and two torps slammed into the ship. It didn´t show up as sunk and I wasn´t 100% sure the cruiser would be lost but after checking the ship sunk list, CA Exeter showed up as sunk by Type 95 torps West of Broome! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! Makes it four heavy cruisers sunk during the fighting North of Australia. E X E T E R YORK-Class cruiser ordered from HM Dockyard, Devonport on 15th March 1928 and laid down on 1st August that year. She was launched 13th July 1929 as the fifth RN ship to bear this name, introduced in 1680 for a 3rd Rate 70 gun ship. The last ship with the name was a Trawler hire for use as a minesweeper during WW1. Build was completed on 23rd July 1931 at a cost of £1,837, 415. The ship had a firm relationship with the City of Exeter throughout her service. This was continued when given to a Type 42 Destroyer on launch by Swan Hunter in 1978. Torpedo attack by Japanese submarine R34 failed. 7th Returned to Batavia. 13th Joined HOBART, Dutch cruisers JAVA and TROMP, HM Destroyer ELECTRA and HM Sloop JUMNA (RIN) as escort for Singapore/Java convoys JS1 and SJ1 during passage. Under attack by Japanese submarine 156 which sank one ship. Escort detached later to intercept Japanese convoy reported in Banka Strait on passage to Palembang, Under sustained air attack by and had to withdraw. 25th Transferred from Tanjong Priok to join Eastern Striking Force at Soerabaya with HM Cruiser PERTH (RAN), HM destroyers JUPITER, ELECTRA and ENCOUNTER. 26th Joined ESF at Tjilatjap and immediately sent to search for Japanese invasion convoys. No contact made and subjected to heavy air attacks. 27th In action against Japanese cruisers HAGURO, NAKA, NACHI, JINTSU escorted by 14 destroyers covering invasion ships with ESF ships. Hit by 8" shell on the starboard side which exploded in Boiler. Speed reduced to 11 knots and ordered to return to Soerabaya for repair escorted by Dutch destroyer WITTE DE WITH. Further damage by enemy destroyer torpedoes prevented in determined counter attack by HM Destroyers ELECTRA, JUPITER and ENCOUNTER. HMS ELECTRA was sunk. 28th Ordered to take passage to Australia with HMS ENCOUNTER and US Destroyer USS POPE. Destination changed to Colombo because ship’s draught too great to allow passage via Bali Channel and threat of air attacks from newly established airfields. Damage to boilers restricted speed to 23 knots.) Sighted by Japanese aircraft soon after leaving harbour. March 1st Ambushed by Japanese cruisers HAGURO and NACHI escorted by four destroyers which were engaged in a running fight. Soon afterwards hit in boiler room and lost use of director control for main armament. Despite smoke screens laid by destroyers received more hits. Fires broke out and all electrical power supplies failed. Ship was abandoned after 3 hours in action. Finally sunk by torpedo. 54 of the ship’s company were killed in this action and 651 were rescued by Japanese ships and became POW. Do you have any idea what ground units Miller has left at his bomber bases around Darwin? A massed assault by the two para regiments and para-capable SNLFs might do a lot of damage.

Mostly base forces I guess, backed up with some bgds. But the base forces alone can easily hold their positions as they have normally 40 assault points and a couple of them get the base av up to a couple of 100 points so there´s no chance to achieve something against the Northern Australian bases.

Miller moved out all the Chinese units but the British were left behind as he thought they would retreat towards China but they couldn´t as I cut their retreat path with my unit SE of the base. There´s also an Allied unit in this hex and Miller thought it would still work as a retreat path. He´s still learning the ground war rules of WITP... [;)] A lot of British units surrendered, but most units were totally wrecked already. But there was also the 18th UK division that had 200+ assault value. We scored nearly 800 points for Allied ground losses today, now being at 16.385!!!
