Have you thought about sending a couple of MSWs on a suicide mission to Wyndham's harbor (or one hex away if you are feeling lucky)? They probably will die horribly but it might help reduce further mine hits.

they wonīt get there. They only move 2 or in the best case 3 hexes a day and as soon as theyīre within 4 hexes of Wyndham they will be attacked by LBA. And Iīm not really a fan of such suicide missions, not even if there are only MSWs involved. The supply convoy will unload unharmed there and I wonīt go there again. Itīs just not worth it, the mine hits there are a joke.

this is already in the afternoon, the aircraft carrier is still afloat, taking bomb after bomb. Never have seen 64 bomb hits (around 20 didnīt penetrate the belt armor) on an enemy carrier, the damned ship just refused to sink. But in the end it slipped beneath the waves. None of the other spotted TFs were attacked and thatīs once again depressing...

but now the funny thing, Miller asked me this when he sent this turn back: I am suprised you did not send the KB after Yorktown and Hornet.......they would be dead by now if you had............ looks like he wasnīt aware of the fact that KB was so close to one of his damaged carriers already. He didnīt spot KB and I donīt know what he thought it would be when there were Alfs and Jakes spotting his TFs the last two turns... [:D]

now how does that work? We were more than 100% supplied, max disruption was 34, our bombers flew 3 attacks on the four enemy units and while our adjusted av looks horrible the enemy still gets nearly his full av. The enemy must have been highly disrupted (retreated two days ago and due to air attacks) and probably was far from fully supplied as you lose all supply in a retreat. Thatīs it, doubt we can do anything now, our troops are now 70+ disrupted and the enemy will be able to move South. Once again it seems Miller is the one with the super lucky die rolls. But after the loss of Hornet today I guess this happening here isnīt that much motivating...

American CV Hornet sunk by superior IJN naval forces! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! [sm=character0169.gif]

USS Hornet, a 19,800 ton Yorktown class aircraft carrier, was constructed at Newport News, Virginia. Commissioned in October 1941, she spent the next four months shaking down in the Atlantic. Transferred to the Pacific in March 1942, Hornet was immediately employed on the Doolittle raid. On 18 April 1942, she launched 16 Army B-25 bombers to attack Japan, a strike that caused relatively little damage, but which had enormous strategic implications.

Hornet was then sent to the South Pacific to reinforce U.S. units there following the Battle of Coral Sea, but was recalled to Pearl Harbor in mid-May. She then took part in the Battle of Midway, on 4-6 June, during which her planes shared in the sinking of the Japanese cruiser Mikuma.

In August 1942, Hornet returned to the South Pacific to join in the fight for Guadalcanal. During much of September and October, she was the only operational U.S. aircraft carrier available to oppose the Japanese in that area. On 26 October 1942, during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, her planes attacked and badly damaged the Japanese carrier Shokaku. In return, however, Hornet received heavy bomb and torpedo damage, necessitating her abandonment. Though accompanying U.S. destroyers attempted to scuttle her, she remained afloat until torpedoed and sunk by Japanese ships early in the morning of 27 October.

pretty boring turns now, guess this is what we will mostly see for the next couple of months. Perhaps Miller will start some limited action somewhere. Air attacks out of Cairns or Townsville against PM, Gili Gili or Thursday Island comes to mind. But I doubt we will see any major invasion without carrier support. I will work on further increasing our defenses in the Pacific and I have now also decided to attack the SOVIET UNION! [sm=character0169.gif] I have 15.000 assault points already prepped for their targets and Iīve started to move air and ground units into Manchuko to further increase our offensive capability. Guess we will see the start of hostilities against Russia in two months.

Xxzard -> RE: it goes on... (4/19/2009 5:51:11 PM)

Well, good luck with that cause, I'm interested to see how the IJA does against the russian 64 plane squadrons- hopefully with obsolete fighters though. You seem to do well enough with ground campaigns, and against an immobile defense I'm sure you'll accomplish much.

Doubt that the Soviets will have a higher exp than 60 so hopefully my Tojos will eat them alive (if they get airborne). The plan is as follows: surprise attack from three of my airfields on the two or three biggest Soviet airfields in the area. This should knock out a couple of hundred enemy aircraft on the first day, leaving most of the rest either damaged or hopefully with very low morale. The enemy wonīt be immobile though, as is done in most (if not all) PBEMs I will of course grant Miller some time to move his ground units around as soon as I have activated the Soviets. I will move in, activate them and then will keep my LCUs static for two weeks, this should give Miller enough time to move his LCUs around on the railline. I will keep on using my airforce though.

Unfortunately, Soviet fighters are FAR from being obsolete! They have some very good fighters and they would eat my Tojos alive if flown by equally skilled pilots, they lack good bombers though.

but the damned sub gets another chance and this time hits with two torps. Once again the big escort is totally useles... The excellent damage model of WITP leaves the big AK behind with 43 sys, 48 flt and 13 fires. [8|] No way the ship will sink, will be disbanded into Osakaīs port tomorrow. While it is annoying to see subs around Japan, itīs definetely the worst place for Allied subs to operate. Why? Because when the hit something off the coast, most times the ship will be disbanded into a big port immediately, making it very hard to actually sink the ships. Would be far better for Miller to operate his subs in the SRA. I wonīt complain... [;)]

yup, as Haguro suffered a MAGAZINE EXPLOSION. And while other players seemed to have made different experiences, in MY special WITP edition, mag explosions ALWAYS immediately result in a sunk ship. BIG BOOOOOM -> SUNK...

The possibility for a mag explosion is very looooow, so like Iīve said, Miller really was lucky here sinking Haguro just outside of Darwin (level 6 port, nav HQ and AR) with one torp. oh well

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

really interesting how much you lose due to "strange happenings" in the game. Due to a "naval movement flaw" Iīve lost a light cruiser, due to the not working follow unit order I had problems in the past. Today, two of our divs get shredded South of Darwin because two units moved, the other four units show 75 miles now. God damn it, there are so many bugs left...

the result is of course devastating. Not just that my troops didnīt move in but moved 75 miles in a 60 mile hex [8|] I also get a fridging bad adjusted av. Just canīt belive Miller really achieved a 2:1... If we would have had just 18 av more than he would have only got a 1:1. Why we get such a bad ajusted av is beyond me anyway, the units were more than fully supplied and very low disrupted. Once again, heīs the luckier one of us two it seems... my troops lost 20% of their strenght and it will take 4 months to rebuild them in Japan. Thank you!

You needn't complain about your ASW efforts.
In scen. 12 - that I started with bigbaba -  he sinks one ASW ship per turn and I don't have any success...

I now withdraw all of my ASW forces as they prooved to be useless and hope for trained LB groups in the future...

I moved the MSWs to Derby to clear the minefield there, even though I donīt have to as I wonīt send a single ship there. So I get what I deserve. My MSW were spotted yesterday so Miller set some of his bombers to nav attack 6 hexes and he can do it without fearing anything. Didnīt move fighters to Derby (even though I have plenty of them in the area and have enough air support at Derby) and Darwin is 7 hexes from Wyndham (where I have the BB TF and 250 Tojos) so it was easy for Miller. What was surprising and shocking at the same time for me is the hit rate of the Mitchells. My 80+ exp Helens performed awfully in the nav attacks on Allied shipping a couple of weeks ago, so I didnīt reall fear the Allied level bombers. Proved to be wrong and pay for my obsolete execution of this "operation"... but I donīt really care about those MSWs, they a) respawn and b) they are useless for anything except mine sweeping anyways...

we somewhat take revenge for the loss of 10 MSW today, SS Sculpin is attacked by one of my premium ASW TFs. A Type 95 and a Type 2 hit and 8 near misses leave the sub heavily damaged. Not that far to Wyndham (level 5 port) but it will take the sub a week to go there if it can only go 1 hex a phase. Perhaps it will sink the next days but my hopes arenīt high if a sub isnīt sunk immediately...

what really surprises me is the fact that the Allied av at Wyndham isnīt going up as fast as I had expected it to. But the enemy will probably have supplies for 4 - 6 months. Would be interesting how much supply 150.000 Allied troops need per month. There are also probably 200 fighters on Cap. The enemy supply convoy surely brought 60.000 supplies, when looking at my deliberate attacks there surely still was supply at Wyndham so weīre talking about something like 70-85.000 supplies there. If 150.000 troops need 20.000 supplies a month then they will run out in 4 months. If they need less...

in either case, there is no chance to take Wyndham at any time IMO...

Castor, I thought Miller had withdrawn and that Ambassador would be handling the Allied side.  Did something change?  I scrolled back several pages to try to find information, but didn't see anything.

Hi!

After the first shock of losing a US CV and the British ones Miller wanted to throw in the towel but wanted to give me some more rounds fun until I would take Wyndham. The next turn, I hit Yorktown and Hornet which then was too much for him and he told me thereīs no sense to go on (again I think this is more of a "first shock"). Then bigbaba agreed to take over again, the command then changed to Ambassador and as he needed some time to do his "first turn" I was not sure if he would go on and I posted that on the forum. Then Miller sent me an email that the game would lure him in again and he would like to go on regardless of any Allied losse and he already sent the next turn with his reply. So the game goes on with Miller as heīs responsible for the Allied situation... [:)]

it doesnīt make sense at all to use Japanese escorts. My merchant navy isnīt decimated because I use the same obsolete strategy the Japanese did in real life, Iīm losing my ships because the escorts are 100% useless. I donīt expect them to sink the subs, but at least they could sometimes keep them from attacking... perhaps 1 out of 7 times they attack the sub first...[8|]

Iīve feared this attack for long already, unfortunately it goes in exactly when I moved in some bombers too. 15.000ft attack, means my flak is useless. There are at least 6 dozen flak guns, including 48x4,7 inch DP guns from a CD unit and a big base force. Attack an Allied base with 48 guns of that calibre and you lose 1/3 of your bombers coming in at 15.000ft with the rest being damaged...[8|]

Canton is one of the expected targets for the next Allied offensive...
