castor troy -> RE: it goes on... (7/18/2009 11:11:47 AM)

And thatīs how my ships look like that are at Makin. At least one of the bomb hits on Chuyo this turn must have been FOW, probably even two of the three hits. We will have 8 DDs arriving tomorrow and either tomorrow or within the next three days our damaged ships will be escorted into a safe area. Means the only loss during the carrier engagement was Junyo for the sinking of 6 CVs, 3 CVLs (without counting the damage to the BBs). Note that the attack on the port resulted in 1000 op points for the ships... [&:]

So, you expect to be able to save the Chuyo?

after the 4E attack and looking at Chuyoīs damage Iīm 98% sure to save her. Only very bad things happenig could see her sinking now. The enemyīs bomber morale was trashed and they can only show up unescorted so only newly transfered bomber squadrons could do the job but this takes time and it takes time to get the damaged bombers repaired, so they could move out to make room for the newly arriving ones (if bigbaba follows the stacking rules...)

All this takes time and I expect to move out the damaged ships within the next three days.

The only small chance for the Allied I see at the moment is trying to move on a base near PM (probably Gili Gili). But to be honest, with PM alone to fly LRCAP and trying to surpress all my airfields and setting bombers on nav attack to deal with KB, I canīt see much of a chance to pull off a succesful and ongoing offensive towards Rabaul. Not to talk about the fact that I still threat Australia with all the ground troops Iīve got there...

we spot more than 3000 aircraft at Irkutsk, so there are probably 1500. bigbaba canīt transfer those aircraft anywhere as he has no bases in range left but at least he could stand down all aircraft above the 400 ac stacking limit. 150+ are spotted flying Cap and hundreds are attacking my LCUs... all units except a HQ have entered Irkutsk. I guess this is the biggest Japanese Army I have ever sent into combat. All our troops are fully prepped, fully combat ready and fully supplied. We have a 4:1 in av and all I can hope is that my eng will be able to take down the first two fort levels and that we will than achieve at least a 1:1 each time to bring down the forts. Everything will depend on the forts as the enemy has unlimited supply with thousands of supply points coming in as autosupply daily. Hopefully the Russian canīt build up a level 8 to level 9 fort in three days like the Western Allied are doing in Australia... [8|] I wonīt give up until my units will be really worn down as they have enough time to recover if we wonīt be able to take the base. They will also have enough time to recover if we will be able to take the base... [;)]

even if we have a 4:1 advantage in assault value, it may look easier than it will be. Level 9 forts and Allied fire power are a killer, not to mention the fact that Allied engineers build up a foxhole into a Maginot line defense during divisional sized combats within a couple of days. Iīve got more than a dozen eng rgts at Irkutsk and all my divs have all their combat eng ready but with the results in this PBEM so far, I donīt expect to take more than two fort levels down with my engineers, they will probably all be disabled after two attacks. This means we will then need to achieve a 1:1 at least to further take forts down. Our biggest advantage are our tanks which hopefully will inflict enough casualties within the defender to see the total casualties being on par. When we achieve this, we will also be able to take the town.

omg... our first attack and the ground combat routine once again shows how "well" it works. As every unit gets a shot at every enemy unit, the result of sending in more troops for an attack only results in more casualties for you. I had more than a dozen eng rgts and ALL are completely wrecked. They have ALL their combat eng squads disabled, guess with the losses within our inf divs, Iīve had nearly 800 combat eng squads disabled in just one attack. [sm=Christo_pull_hair.gif] Iīve never sent such a big Army into combat and Iīve never suffered so many casualties in one turn when no units surrendered. Iīm pretty sure that we only inflicted losses within the enemyīs HQ units that are in the lead, there are at least five or six I guess. Next attack in three or four days. If our eng canīt take down another fort level then the assault is already a failure as we then wonīt be able to take down a fort because I doubt we will achieve a 1:1. This attack has cost us more than 1500 assault points. Whenever possible, try to avoid land combat in WITP when there are more than two divisions involved.

Surprised me that you weren't that far off from a 1-1 at Irkutsk.

Been a while since it's been brought up . . . how is your fuel situation? Presumably w/ little to no naval combat in the forseeable future you'll be able to save a little bit.

Yakface -> RE: it goes on... (7/23/2009 10:16:13 PM)

Can you bomb the base? - force the engineers to repair the airfield rather than replace the forts.  Gives you longer to recover diabled units rather than always having to attack early for fear of the forts going back up.

Sneer -> RE: it goes on... (7/24/2009 7:44:54 AM)

my experiance from my halted pbem is that player should stay away from big battles in witp
no matter what you do results are at least weird
if irkutck has auto supply it may be an impossible task....

I had hopes to achieve a 1-1 with my second or third attack as otherwise we will probably fail to take the base. If I look at the assault values than the enemy has something like 150 disabled av (out of 3000) while we have 2000 disabled av (out of 12.000). So the 27.000 casualties were really shocking and I guess you have to look for "workarounds" to exploit the game engine if you really want to achieve something. Perhaps attacking with 6.000 av today and another 6.000 av tomorrow would have done the trick. Donīt know, next deliberate attack in three days or so. The good thing, even if we fail, the Russian wonīt achieve much and 5.000 av being kept in Russia will probably be enough to keep them honest. Bigbaba has yet to convince me that heīs the better commander in ground warfare than Miller was. [;)]

the fuel storage went up again, slightly, but it was going up. Until the operations near the Gilberts we saw the fuel levels growing, the 10 days of using the fleet around Makin used up nearly 200.000 fuel though. So my previous statements of not having or producing enough fuel to even feed my merchants was wrong. With conquering nearly the whole on map oil sites (and most of the HI) you produce enough fuel to feed your merchant navy and you can send out the fleet once a year. Of course you have to achieve a decisive victory if you send out the fleet because otherwise you wonīt have the fuel you need. Needless to say if the enemy achieves a decisive victory then fuel isnīt a problem for you anymore anyway. [;)]

I could bomb it of course (from Ulan Ude, range 4) and Iīve thought about it for perhaps... 10 sec..., but decided that it would be contraproductive for the state of my IJAAF medium bomber force. Problem is once again the all and everything killing enemy flak defense. Even an attack from 20.000 would be suicide and not worth the 30 hits on the runway that would be repaired by the hundreds (if not a thousand) eng squads in no time, while still being able to repair the Russian Maginot line.

Hi Sneer

good to see you back on the forum. Youīre absolutely correct, if possible, big battles should always be avoided but itīs not possible all the time, especially in a PBEM when one player sends in his troops, the other does it too of course. Or in this case, there is just nothing left in Russia, so everything met here to fight it out at Irkutsk. While I have a Japanese mega Army, the enemy Army isnīt even that big. Big enough to wreck two and a half dozen divs of mine thouhg.

Irkutsk has auto supply but my main issue is the Allied ability of building forts, this especially due to the eng vehicles. One of the many things that are just plain wrong in WITP but probably the first thing that is wrong is me as the Japanese being able to knock out nearly the whole map, so really complaining about it is probably pathetic from my side.[;)]

Hmm - You have my sympathies - if you can't bomb bases for fear of the flak then this mod is borked. What point is there i having a medium bomber force if it can't be used at the decisive point?

when looking at what is at Irkutsk (means base forces) then I would guess that a 300 Helen attack at 20.000ft would result in 30 hits on the runway, a dozen Helens lost with another 80 damaged. An attack at 15.000ft would result in 60 hits, 30 Helens shot down and 130 damaged. An attack at 10.000ft would mean 100+ hits but also 50 Helens shot down and 249 damaged, leaving one operational bomber with a morale of 1.... this of course is an exaggeration but I guess you get what I mean. Losing 40 Helens would be a disaster already.

thatīs why it only took me 10 sec to think about using my bombers against this base. If I could use them then I would use them on ground attack. If I would get two or three waves attacking the major divisions at Irkutsk daily then it would be NO problem to take out this base. Those air attacks would result in three to five (if youīre lucky) heavily disrupted units and those units with a disruption of around 70 arenīt combat effective at all. This way I could knock down the forts with 1:1 or better attacks. Unfortunately I can NOT use my bombers. Not because of the enemy fighter defense, because the enemy flak would kill me. Enemy bases with more than two base forces (not to talk about dedicated AA units) are off limits for my bombers. Thatīs why I donīt have much use for my Army bombers, other than ASW... My airforce has only a couple of purposes left: ASW, point defense and anti shipping strikes. Attacks on enemy bases has been deleted from the list.

as soon as the enemy at Blagoveshchensk will run out of supplies this will become my major training target for my airforce. There are three bases only one hex away from Blagoveshchensk and we can put 950 aircraft into those bases as soon as theyīve all been fully built up. This should give us the possibility to fly training runs without suffering a dozen aircraft lost to ops daily. But I fear it will still take a long time until the enemy will have run out of supply as the enemy artillery still does quite some damage...

Iīm taking nearly a dozen op losses per turn from those training raids. All from the bases that are two hexes away from the target. Losing something like 300 ac per month in training raids is too much, only training runs from one hex are safe for the Japanese.

Hum, in my last game with Moses, he pushed me into having to do most of my IJA fighter training from Manilla and "bombing" San Jose ... a two hex run. I recall working out an alternating system whereby I was able to avoid the kinds of losses you're seeing. Also he "kept me honest" by occasionally hitting Manilla with B-24s from China - so I had to put some guys on CAP.

But despite all these interferences I was able to rotate my units roughly every two months. Some would only spend one turn at the front in Burma (a 36 plane units might lose 24 planes in one 2-day turn) and then the unit would get rotated back to Manilla.

Moses had wanted PDU "on" ... so during rotations back to Manilla, I would "downgrade" the fighters to Nates or Oscars (when the Nates ran out) ... so I would train up with old planes and then reupgrade back when the units went to the front. This meant I could consume every plane I was given and only had ot build the new planes to fight at the front (spare HI point thus being spent on more ship acceleration).

But my air attrition losses seemed lower than yours - I think I put my units on "training" every 2-3 turns - to avoid high fatigue.

Oh in the early going I tried to hit 80 average EXP before returning to the front - at one point I got in trouble and lowered the threshold to 75 ... then after a few months units were piling up at the front - so I re-raised the threshold back to 80. Just talking fighters here. We allowed the "supply" training thingy for bombers so different system there. I think the supply thingy either went away in 1806 or it will in 1807 ... so then bombers will have to train differently going forward.

Hi

Iīm more or less doing the same as you describe, with the difference that my units are flying "training runs" every day. I donīt start the training until the fat is down to 1 or 2, so this means that the average fat for one of my daitais on training is usually 5 or 6 when flying daily runs from two hexes. Doesnīt seem excessive to me, flying is dangerous as the Japanese, I have 0 fat 90 exp pilots crashing while doing transfers more or less all the time.

Well, this all is of course ranting on a very high level, as it stands now I shouldnīt complain about anything to be honest. [;)] I guess the losses I take from flying those hundreds of training runs daily at the moment arenīt off anyway, itīs just annoying if you lose a couple of high exp pilots daily as not only the <70 pilots are crashing. All this can be avoided when flying 1 hex attacks, I neraly never take losses in those attacks on Manila, both strikes coming from one hex (Clark and Bataan). I can also fly 400 ac out of Vladivostok on a one hex attack on a static Russian fortress but nearly 900 ac more are flying attacks from two hexes. Insane, summing it up I must have nearly 2000 ac set to training at the moment. Must be a new record for me. And the numbers are growing at the moment due to getting lots of reinforcements with big ac numbers. This doesnīt mean the pilots in my daitais all need training but with the losses Iīve taken against the enemy carriers near the Gilberts I decided that all daitais that suffered losses should do some training. Both bombers and fighters are doing training runs, no ac is set to supply runs. The huge numbers of training runs will decrease within the next two months again, I expect no more than 700 ac being used then.

I confirm that making air groups training at a distance of 2 hex gives some operationnal losses but it seems to me acceptable.
And some of the pilots are only WIA.
Of course, the best distance is 1 hex where there is nearly no op losses. The best way to achieve that is to keep a ennemy base near one big friendly base, for example Bataan kept to allies when Clark Field is jap.
The trouble may come from the fact that when Bataan will be completely empty of enemy troops, it will probably become a jap base automically by proximity.
But there is a way to avoid that: put a jap ground unit on Bataan et never attack. The base will stay as Allies [:D]

Ground combat at Irkutsk

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 589727 troops, 5764 guns, 3391 vehicles, Assault Value = 12049

Defending force 150509 troops, 1765 guns, 201 vehicles, Assault Value = 3066

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 8

Japanese max assault: 10743 - adjusted assault: 4796

Allied max defense: 3144 - adjusted defense: 5558

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 8)

Japanese ground losses:
27838 casualties reported
Guns lost 733
Vehicles lost 243

Allied ground losses:
5038 casualties reported
Guns lost 241
Vehicles lost 6

omg... our first attack and the ground combat routine once again shows how "well" it works. Iīve never sent such a big Army into combat and Iīve never suffered so many casualties in one turn when no units surrendered.

Sorry, i am a little bit late on your AAR but according to you, what is the reason of a so big difference between the jap max assault value and the adjusted one's???

"Japanese max assault: 10743 - adjusted assault: 4796"

castor troy -> RE: it goes on... (7/28/2009 9:38:36 AM)

the reason why the adjusted av is halfed is because ground combat is completely borked in WITP. Seriously, Iīve got no idea. While there are the well known modifiers why a defensive adjusted av looks what it looks like, I have yet to hear why 100% prepped, not fatigued, not disrupted, fully supplied units get their av halfed. I can only repeat myself, ground combat in WITP is completely borked and with everything in WITP, the more units there are involved the more obvious the flaws of the engine. Everything in WITP works very well as long as there are reasonable numbers are involved. As soon as you get above reasonable numbers, you get screwed results.

As it stands now, we wonīt be able to take out a base with 2500 enemy av with 12000 of my fully prepped av. Several reasons for this: we canīt bomb the base. Why? Due to the all killing Allied Nikmod flak. The base will never be starved. Why? Because of the auto supply that brings in thousands of supply points each day, even though the base is completely cut off. The borked engine which enables every defending unit firing at every attacking unit one after another, inflicting more and more casualties the more units you send in (kind of contraproductive to send in more units anyway). The uber ability of Allied units to build a maginot line while constantly being under attack - doing this in just a couple of days. The inability of taking out the forts with nearly a thousand combat engineers (they are ALL disabled after two attacks [sm=crazy.gif][sm=Christo_pull_hair.gif]). And last but not least, while we lose 2000 av with each attack, the enemy loses 100-150. [sm=crazy.gif]. Means one attack disables the equivalent of 5 IJA divisions. [&o]

I've heard that some defensive adjustments (eg terrain and forts) are applied to the attacker as a negative modifier. Others (eg prep, HQ) are applied as positives to defensive AV.

at least terrain canīt be a negative modifier for me in this case because itīs a clear terrain. Lol, if it would be a wooden hex I would need 24.000 av to achieve what I achieved so far, which is nearly nothing. And this against only 4 "real" enemy divs, the rest is worn down units or fragments of units that are rebuilding. Fighting against more or less the maximum the Japanese can field when stripping China (after conquering it) and taking out more or less everything Russian held.

will you continue your game till the end, now that AE is out?
Moreover, would you mind sending my bigbaba's email adress via PM, I don't have it here on my laptop and want to tell him that the good times are over and he'll be challenged by me, again [;)]

god damn, why do the Allied always get several attacks on different LCUs while the Japanese is stuck with one, two or in best case three attacks with more bombers? counterproductive as all you need is to disrupt the units and three dozen bombers are enough to do that...
