Here are the fires plotted on an AE map!

Never though a WitP map would be used to track bushfires!

Here is a satellite pic taken of some of the the same area. The heat wave conditions this Summer have been unprecedented and the fires the worst in loss of life we have experienced. Truly terrible.

Andrew (living in Melbourne).

Meanwhile, record rainfall in Napoli this winter...

And record snowfall here in Toledo

Matto -> RE: Day 3 and 4 (2/9/2009 10:49:07 PM)

I spent a great time in Victoria, in Promotory Park and SE coast ... sad to hear about firestorms there ...

Chad Harrison -> RE: Day 3 and 4 (2/9/2009 11:09:33 PM)

And its snowing in Arizona right now [:D]

BTW, I saw strange things going on in down under, concerning weather. [X(]Are you save ?

The fires are 20km to the South and South west of here, we have light smoke over us for the 3rd day. Winds increased over night, but the weather is expected to be cool today. The problem is it will heat up again this weekend.

Elsewhere in the state the fires are still a real threat, and there are number in NSW.

The death toll is expected to be over 200, and there are over 750 homes destroyed. Several small towns cease to exisit.

It looks like a number were deliberately lit.

Cheers

Rob

We had the same problem with a number of serious fires in South Georgia (US) a couple of years ago. I simply cannot imagine a mentality which could construe arson as something to do. I know they exist, but Lord alone knows what is going in in such a mind...

Stay safe, and prayers are with all y'all.

It was like that last July in California--not quite as bad but comparable.

Kaletsch2007 -> RE: Day 5 and 6 (2/10/2009 11:50:23 AM)

Even they have to cross water, they do not need to shock attack, as the name GT is shown in white ?
Did i got that one right ?

It'll probably be on e-bay any day now

jrcar -> RE: Day 5 and 6 (2/10/2009 11:26:12 PM)

Sorry for the delay, work has been busy, so a quick post.

15-16 Dec 41
Lots more ASw action on both sides, I hit a Dutch DD (will probably sink) but get hit in rturn. We have recently toned down ASW search effectiveness and the subs on both sides appear to be more active, and succesful, as a result.

In Mayala I've managed to cut off one enemy Brigade, I'll post a secreen shot and description later.

Philipines sees me moving south along the coast and through the mountains, follow-on forces are landing.

Ambon is secure with a Naval HQ, Air HQ and strong air strike and defence. One thing in AE is that the naval search is also less effective than stock, so you really need the mix of SCTF and Naval Air Strike to protect bases. Raids by CL and DD class vessels can be very effective due to the new hex by hex naval movement plot. On the other hand many of these assets become one shot weapons with a major base or fleet train. For example Sorebaya can load torpedoes and rearm CA and below class vessles, but not BB's. There are basically no other ports in the DEI that can even do that with significant numbers of naval support or a fleet train.

I'm just about ready now for the second wave of invasions now I have some firm bases to move from.

China is progressing slowly, I'm moving the Tax Police unit into location so that they can tax the fleeing Chinese Army :) I think these guys will be my favorite unit!

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Day 5 and 6 (2/10/2009 11:40:47 PM)

Ok here is the land action in Malaya.

I move down to Alor Star (1), Cathartes left a rearguard (I think) while the rest ran.

At 2 I moved behind the rearguard from Patani, battling the fleeing units who went south and blocking the main escape of the rear guard.

I also moved south from Kota Bharu.

With the block in place near George Town I attacked at Alor Star, defeating the rear guard who fled east.

Because I didn't have a unit in that hex (and therefore didn't own the hexsides) this retreat was allowed.

This shows a key change in AE, and shows how forces can be "slippery" if you don't physically have a unit in a hex.

So it is much harder to destroy a whole "stack", and manouvre really works, but you need follow up forces to maintain an encirlement.

jrcar -> Ship Repair (2/10/2009 11:53:45 PM)

Ok here is a quick demonstration on ship repair, I had the Chokai deliberately damaged to show this [8|]

First you select the ship screen for the port (as per stock) and then select "Manage Ships Under Repair"

[image]local://upfiles/6237/A6736D672A7540BF80D992AF1205AE5C.jpg[/image]

jrcar -> RE: Ship Repair (2/10/2009 11:57:35 PM)

By default the ship will anchor and the crew will repair what they can, this is "Minor Damage".

Major damage is listed (in this case 32 floatation, meaning the hull integeraty) is shown in red, and an X is displayed indicating this can't be fixed in this mode.

The number of days is also shown (in this case to repair the systems damage)

You can change the priority of the ship as well, useful when you have more than one in port.

[image]local://upfiles/6237/0AB847002C0240A1B8C622E8B489A75A.jpg[/image]

jrcar -> RE: Ship Repair (2/11/2009 12:00:38 AM)

By moving to pier side extra assets (in this case Naval support at the base) come into play and so the repair time goes down, BUT the ship is more vulnerable to port attacks, and it takes time for it to get ready once at pierside.

I don't have a repair ship at Saigon (which is the third option, readiness, pierside, repair ship), but I do have a repair yard...

[image]local://upfiles/6237/2AA57C5E254B4FE98AC693969E41B2D7.jpg[/image]

jrcar -> RE: Ship Repair (2/11/2009 12:03:21 AM)

I can allocated the ship to the repair yard, BUT the ship is 14,000 tons, and the yard can only handle 10,000 tons (a size 10 repair yard is 10,000 ton, a 20 20,000 tons, a 30 30,000 tons).

I can increase the size of the yard, or move it to a yard that can handle it.

[image]local://upfiles/6237/7069FD58B6E7408EB7A3BE7FBB87E57F.jpg[/image]

jrcar -> RE: Ship Repair (2/11/2009 12:10:33 AM)

Minor and Major damage accumulates at low rates due to ship movement around the place. Minor damages is usually repaired by the crew fairly quickly once the ship is stopped in a port.

Combat causes both minor and major damage. A combination of any mix of minor and major flotation damage that reaches 100 sinks the ship.

AR's can repair small amounts of engine and system major damage.

Major damage can take a long time to repair, and their are only a few places that can handle it (repair yards).

If a ship doesn't sink within a day of it being hit you can usually get it to a port (accidents, like repairs failing, happen though). Once in port you usually save it.

It is important to have a fleet train, have a base to repair the major damage that accumulates to maintain an active fleet, otherwise the fleet becomes a one shot weapon.

Cheers

Rob

Hornblower -> RE: WITP AE AAR Feb 09 Cathartes-JRCAR (Jap) (2/11/2009 2:52:39 AM)

i love the map...

Dili -> RE: WITP AE AAR Feb 09 Cathartes-JRCAR (Jap) (2/11/2009 3:19:32 AM)

I love the new rules: harbours, repairs, tonnage limits, extended ship habilities/limitations.

Grotius -> RE: WITP AE AAR Feb 09 Cathartes-JRCAR (Jap) (2/11/2009 3:23:18 AM)

Rob, thanks for the helpful description of the new repair system. I like it.

So would it make sense to repair that system damage before moving the ship to a larger yard to do the FLT damage? Or is it more efficient to have the larger yard do both? Also, is the 32 days a hard-and-fast figure or an estimate?

jrcar -> RE: WITP AE AAR Feb 09 Cathartes-JRCAR (Jap) (2/11/2009 3:29:44 AM)

Grotius,

the 32 days is an estimate (usually good), but depend on what other ships come in, relative priorities, naval support being disabled, a random die roll.

There is risk in sending it on without repairing some of it, in particular if it gets into a fight (including a sub). So I will repair it first, I expect to have Singapore in 30 odd days so would prefer to fix it forward, rather than send it back. But if it goes back to a bigger yard I could fix it quicker as there are more assets.

I don't have a spare escort at the moment, having it out of service isn't a war winner (loser) at this stage. A BB or a CV though I'd try to get back to somewhere bigger.

Cheers

Rob

I certainly hope that increasing the size of the yard will take longer than repairing this ship...

Well, if I got it right, not really...if he keeps the ship in same port. Since Major Flooding Damage cannot be repaired by other means than Repair Shipyard (AFAIK), he would have 2 options:

1. Send it to Repair Shipyard big enough to handle the ship
2. Wait until the Repair Shipyard in this port is large enough to accommodate the ship (this would be akin to enlargening the drydock)

So, in latter case, time to repair Major Flood Damage would be time to expand the Repair Shipyard + time taken in actual repairs by that same shipyard.

I hope I got that right.

m10bob -> RE: Ship Repair (2/11/2009 12:50:02 PM)

How does a floating drydock affect ship repair in port?

jrcar -> RE: Ship Repair (2/11/2009 7:55:01 PM)

Sardaukar you have it right, buidling dry docks costs a lot of supply and I think HI.

M10bob an ARD acts like an AR but repairs flotation damage.

Cheers

Rob

Sardaukar -> RE: Ship Repair (2/11/2009 8:45:38 PM)

The strategic implications of this change alone are huge for naval forces of both sides!

And very welcome. [&o]

RevRick -> RE: Ship Repair (2/11/2009 8:59:21 PM)

Definitely not like the old days in PacWar when you could run the old boogers flat out forever until they get beat up somewhere. I LIKE THIS!!! It means we gotta think, if we are capable after looking at everything and ingesting the data.

Dili -> RE: Ship Repair (2/11/2009 9:21:21 PM)

quote:

Hehe, it is the inverse for me, in witp i was always thinking: could it happen in reality? Now it will be much less "gamey" for both sides.

Cathartes -> RE: Ship Repair (2/11/2009 9:40:15 PM)

Ship repair adds a whole new dimension to the game. You do have to think a lot more about it, but you also have more control over which ships get repaired and how fast.

With a high priority repair setting in a shipyard, I've seen subs with 5-6 system damage and 10 flotation damage repair as fast as one day. Keep in mind that you're ship is not ready as soon as it's repaired. It takes a turn or two to get out of the shipyard, get all systems "turned on", the ship crewed, and ready for a mission.
