Well, when there are too few players at a position to go around, its NOT a good idea to make that a specific position that everyone must have. Far too many teams have TE's that never touch the ball. So a handful of fantasy teams will have a player that will score points for them, but most fantasy teams will just have a spot on their roster that doesnt make points, meaning the people that draft early will have even MORE of an advantage.

I threw out the name of Dallas Clark off the top of my head, but you're right to the extent that there are a limited number of "top-tier" picks among tight-ends in the league, ones that put up numbers more like those of a good WR.

But, hey, can't you make the same comment made about running-backs? How many Adrian Peterson/Chris Johnson/Maurice Jones-Drew types are there? And in the context of your concern about the draft, how many of them were available towards the end of the first-round or the beginning of the second? The answer of course, is NONE.

My real concern is that the format that we played under last year can reduce a Dallas Clark's remarkable stats to something bordering on the mediocre, as he's thrown into a category of guys who typically yield far higher yards per catch.

And, for many of the others, in spite of limited catches and yds/catch, they can still be a reliable source of TDs, a characteristic that might make them a genuine bargain when compared to some mediocre or second-string running backs or receivers.

Bring back the TE!

Scott_WAR -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (6/23/2010 2:55:22 AM)

Well, ANY RB that starts, or even backups, will score some points every game. TE's on most NFL teams will be lucky to get more than two passes a game much less score many TD's.

I would rather 4 or 5 TE's be semi-productive parts of a WR corp than 4 or 5 teams have good producers at TE while several other teams get screwed over at the position.

Think big-picture, Scott_WAR.

I picked next to last in both seasons that I've played.

If some poor devil is that far down the draft list, how can you begrudge him a "crown-jewel" at a position?

And, as I mentioned above, TE do generate TD far out of proportion to their catches or yds/catch.

Last year, I picked up Lindale White thinking that he'd continue to be inserted into the game on goal-line situations.

Big mistake, I'd have been better off with any number of TE, particularly if they were competing against other TE.

Scott_WAR -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (6/23/2010 9:39:36 PM)

If you had picked a TE instead of a RB, you wouldnt have been able to use that TE at the RB slot, so your argument about being better of picking a TE has no relevance. Now if you meant you would have been better off choosing someone for the WR postion (TE or WR) and chose another RB later, then I can see your point a little better, but it still doesnt have any relevance to the point that there are less TE's that produce decent points consistently than at any other position.

I've been an owner in a private league for 6 years now, and it uses a dedicated TE slot,...so I know the big picture, and I can tell you from experience, there are too few decent TE's for a dedicated spot in a league with more than 8 owners.

Now if we have 8 owners or less, then its not an issue

I can't remember how many teams that we had last year, twelve perhaps, maybe thirteen the year before.

IMO, you can make the same argument about RB as TE. If you look at the difference between the stats of Chris Johnson and those of the #12 or #13 RB in the NFL, its hard not to recognize as much. CJ must have finished the regular season with something approaching a thousand yards more of combined offense than either one of those guys.

And it's not just "horse-flesh" that accounts for this. Yes, the guy needs to be a stud, but he also has to play for a team that will keep him on the field, like Baltimore, Nashville or Jacksonville.

As you are no doubt aware, platooning of RB is becoming more and more common-place in the NFL, as anyone who owned a Cowboys/Giants/Patriots RB will tell you. Those owners didn't know from week to week if their guy was even going to get the ball or not.

If anything, the disparities between what's available RB-wise, is more than severe than that which involves TE.

Scott_WAR -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (6/24/2010 9:11:43 AM)

Here are the season points for the TE position in the private league from last year.

Team A- 63
Team B- 94
Team C- 46
Team D- 115
Team E- 126
Team F- 61
Team G- 105
Team H- 79
Team I- 65
Team J- 79
Team K- 58
Team L- 59

The results speak for themselves. The average points scored by TE's in the above list is 79. 2 teams GREATLY benefitted from having a good TE, 2 other teams did decent. 2 teams were close to the average. The rest (6 teams) scored less than the average, by more than 20 points, with 3 of them being significantly below average,....30 to 40+ points below average.. So 4 teams benefited, 2 did average and 6 were lower than average.

As I said before the drastic in just the top 12 TE's is too drastic.

Prince of Eckmühl -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (6/24/2010 1:48:56 PM)

Glad you've got the numbers available.

Take a look at your running backs. Are there two or three per team? If so, how does the middle of the pack, statistically, measure up against Chris Johnson, Ray Rice or Maurice Jones-Drew? I'd strongly suspect the numbers would be only forty or fifty percent of those of the leaders, perhaps even less.

The fact of the matter is, that by including so many RB and WR in a league, you're not inviting mediocrity, you're guaranteeing it. And, I'd note, when you add some of those guys to your roster, there's an excellent chance that they won't be playing from week to week. So what's the point?

Scott_WAR -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (6/24/2010 4:28:31 PM)

As I said in my first post TE are better for rounding out a WR corp. If good WR's are getting low, there are a couple of TE's that can actually fill in and be competitive.
So you have a choice of having them in a dedicated spot, where they will help a couple of teams, and hurt far more, or you can have them be a part of the WR corp and actually be able to help some teams without hurting all the rest.

1 of the teams had 2 TE on their roster.......another team had 3 TE's on his roster.
Team E had 2 TE's,,,,the best made 126, the other made 96.
Team J had 3 TE's,,,, the best made 79, the other 2 combined made 42.
I used the best TE for each team for the numbers in the earlier post.
I'll use the best RB on each team for comparing RB's.

The slots we have in the league are QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, WR/R, D, K.
So each team has 2 or 3 or even more RB's.

Team A- 143
Team B- 187
Team C- 157
Team D- 182
Team E- 137
Team F- 107
Team G- 94
Team H- 112
Team I- 217
Team J- 113
Team K- 141
Team L- 110

An average score of 142.
3 teams scored moderately above that, 1 significantly higher.
4 teams were right around the average.
5 teams were below average, all of them close to each other.
One team had two RB's that were over 150 points....but only the higher scoring one was used (157).

A little better spread of teams being above and below average, and much closer numbers overall.

Paul Vebber -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (7/4/2010 8:52:17 PM)

I've had a league with dedicated TEs each year. The Hall of fame league I think.

I will be doing the Basic league again this year. the Pro league that has dedicated Defensive players, anfd more stats orientd scoring and the Hall of fame league with more offensive players and a more scoring oriented system.

Arctic Blast -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (7/4/2010 10:51:34 PM)

Looking forward to...well, probably all 3. :)

Paul Vebber -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (7/27/2010 3:04:31 AM)

.

Paul Vebber -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (8/14/2010 5:04:43 PM)

Do to the demand I expanded the Basic league to two division and opened up 6 more spots!

Paul Vebber -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (8/14/2010 6:22:04 PM)

OK the Hall of Fame league is up. as I said last year it will be a keeper league. Please look at your team form last year (there is a year drop down on the page) and post two players from your final roster last year as your keepers. You can only pick 1 player from a postion.

Paul Vebber -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (8/14/2010 7:03:35 PM)

OK the leagues are up. Hall of Fame is a keeper league with an auction draft. keepers count against your salery cap at the default Yahoo values. i think this is the fairest way to do keepers.

Matrix Hall of Fame (ID# 435998) password is matrix (maybe with a cap M...)

The Pro league is also up at

Matrix Pro League (ID# 436865) (sanme password - might be a cap M...)

Have fun! And check the draft times! I'm flexible. We have not been getting good turn outs...:(

Arctic Blast -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (8/14/2010 9:22:10 PM)

In, in and in. Thanks a bunch of running the leagues again this year, Paul. [:)]

Paul Vebber -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (8/26/2010 1:26:40 PM)

We still need AT LEAST one more player in the Hall of fame league. If you played last year, you can keep two players using "Fair market value". It is a scoring heavy league, but I have weighted it a bit as QBs were too strong last year. Anyway if you want to try an "auction draft" league with lots of players scoring each week, take a look at:

http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/436865 password matrix (might have a capital M)

Somebody please step up or my daughter is going to join and give me CRAP all season long...(I told her if she joined she could have Brett Favre...)

Scott_WAR -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (8/26/2010 2:17:08 PM)

If I wasnt in it last year and join now, how would it handle me being 2 players down?

Paul Vebber -> RE: Fantasy Football 2009 (8/27/2010 1:26:40 PM)

THat situation is why I choose the auction draft process for the keeper league. Each player starts with $250. Those that have keepers have that budget decremented by the "fair market value" of the players they keep - basically with 14 spots to fill and 250$ to spend is 17$ per player. I took the projected points for the league for the top 200 players and multiplied the 17$ average cost by the % over average the player was projected to score. THere are bench positions, but by the time you get to them you are spending a buck or 2.

So to make a long story short, you would have the full 250$ to spend in the auction, while those with keeper players will have the price of their keepers subtracted - and since they are usually good players, its like between 70 and 100$. This gives you a much better chance to land top pllayers that have not been taken, as you have more money to spend!

Hope that helps!
