Don't feel bad about Chengchow. For whatever reason the Chinese can't seem to do anything to hold it.
On a positive note, he is disrupted to the point that he is taking minuses in combat.

Perhaps you could move a unit of obsolete chinese fighters into the airbase next to Chengchow and assign them to do strafing attacks at 100' on his ground units there to slow their recovery. That would hurt him as much as the fighting does.
If you annoy him enough, he will have to move decent fighter units up and start providing top cover for his troops. That would keep them from being used elsewhere. You could then move your attacks around to different units, still doing damage and making it harder for him to cover everything.

Be like a pesky fly.

Looking at his loses, you are not doing pretty bad (of course the fog of war might be telling big lies here) so far.

If he really has lost 164 zeroes then he is hurting since he only started with 26 in the pool and would have produced only 112 so far. Watch for zero units in combat with fewer than 27 planes or multiples of 9 planes. If you see a lot that are only flying like 20 planes then you know that he has exhausted his pool and is living hand to mouth here. That is when you try to bait him into a trap where you fight his weakened zero units with your remaining P-40 units. Even on an exchange, it will hurt him to continue bleeding a plane that he can't replace fast enough. Granted, by March his factory expansion on the zeroes should be starting to catch up on his losses. Yet, if you keep attriting him in February and early March as long as you can, then you can keep him hurting for a while.

His Lily and Kate pools should also be totally exhausted and the only way he can replace Kate losses would be by changing out his land based units with Jeans to get about 70 more Kates. Since he had no Kate production at start, he will take a while to build up a replacement pool. You may be able to take advantage of this during the mid-spring even though you have lost two carriers. He will be more reluctant to commit the KB if his strike arm is not at full strength or if he can't replace the losses.

He is probably fine on Nell and Sally losses so far so there isn't much you can do here.

devoncop -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/5/2009 3:13:45 PM)

Hi.

Guadalcanal started off stickily but the attack on PM has been heavily defeated and Lunga and Tugaki (?) have been overrun.Japanese have lost a lot of flyboys from Air to Air and flak but have hit my naval forces quite hard (score 6600 to 1300 in my favour at end of Sept) which seems ok.GC soon I hope!

As for the Chinese situation in your game I think you are beating yourself up unfairly.Looking at your Nanying victory and the Chengchow defeat you caused around 6000 casualties in Chenchow and 10% losses and there will be a lot of disrupted and fatigued Japanese around for a while.Bear in mind you were outnumbered 5 to 1 in guns and were immobile and inexperienced compared to the Japanese.You really can absorb huge losses and your victory in Nanying shows the effects if your own forces have decent heavy gun support.

What are Chinese resources like re guns? Do you have them all in the strongpoints you have established?

I am not doing a "Comical Ali" Information Minister turn but I think you can afford to be more positive [:D]

Cheers
Ian

Smeulders -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/5/2009 3:50:19 PM)

Also interesting are the huge OpLosses he is taking. Granted, all units, even units with low fatigue and high morale tend to botch a lot of landings, but over half may point to exhausted squadrons.

aztez -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/5/2009 8:38:17 PM)

seydlitz: Yeah Chengchow was doomed from the start once it became obvious where the hammer was directed.

You are correct and these assaults + recovery should eat a lot of supplies too!

I'am starting to be more active in the air above china. It will take few turns though to get everything in place. I did bomb his armoured units moving towards Lanchow and last turn zero fighters moved in to cover these units.

Intresting remark about zero's. I have actually seen just 4-5 fighters providin cap. Ie. near Lanchow. Definately will keep an eye on this. I don't whether he is moving just with lba cover in Borneo now after those carrier raids. Maybe we hurt him more than I estimated.

I have tried to combat these zeros with AVG but the results have been very poor. Now we are waiting him on the southern pacific and DEI. It will consume his precious zero's once he comes to play.

I was wondering about those Kate losses and his carriers are now nowhere to be found. I have within 2 weeks time 3 US carriers plus 1 RN carrier and CVL Hermes. I thinking of combining these ships but not yet decieded on the issue.

As for his lba bombers. Well, they are hammering away in China, Malaya and Luzon. So he propably has made some production adjustments.

devoncop: That sound like an good fight! By the sound of it you are ready for GC.

Yeah, I'am hard to myself because I really don't want to give him free pass on this theatre! ..maybe a bit harsh but definately a lot of things to improve regards my gameplay. This is something I like in these forums. Tons of players with their approaches and you can included fresh ideas to your own game this way.

The Nanyang thing went all wrong last turn since I took an gamble. This was calculated risk and I'am willing to live with the results.

There really is not much in terms of guns and these are spread around the map. I might have calculated wrong since I think we could use couple more in the north.

"Comical Ali" [:D]

Smeulders: I noticed that too but really hard pinpoint what the cause is. The fatigue really can cause harm with AE and I can say that leaders really matter in this version too.

aztez -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/5/2009 8:38:58 PM)

China (february 1st and 2nd 1942)

I did an gamble near Nanyang. These troops have trying to enter the base for numerous turns only to have their destination "reset" by land and air bombings.

These troops were 8 miles away from the city before the last turn and had combat orders. So I changed it to MOVE command in order to enter the city.

Unfortunately enemy launched an ground offensive and needless to say I got burned.

Sometimes things work in your favour and sometimes they don't. As said this was an calculated risk which backfired this time around.

Another thing I'am starting to do is to sent in battered low av units into suicide combat missions. This way I get them back 1/3 strenght which is way more than their av is currently.

Mindanao (february 1st and 2nd 1942)

At Manila the final assault is about to begin. IJA entered the hex with 39 units and we can expect shock assaults until the base is overrun. The positive news have come from Mindanao.

In the past few days we hit few tranports there.

These hits were made by those ABDA divebombers. I'am actually starting like them a lot! To be honest these guys are the only ones hitting anything at the moment.

Keep in mind that these guys just toasted quite a few transports near Samarinda. They are well worth the Medal of Honour title.

The following ships were hit:

xAK Shinanogawa Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Shinryu Maru, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Ohio Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire
xAP Kamakura Maru, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires
xAP Asama Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire

There were more ships shown on the combat.txt files but these were unharmed if this is to be believed. We all know the FOW so who knows.

Good stuff though and hoping to see even better results when we need it.

Christmas Island (february 3rd and 4th 1942)

At least we do not have guess anymore where the KB is located.

It showed up near Christmas Island and schewed up some transports unloading their supplies into the base. Luckily the troops were already unloaded so we just lost some supplies, merchants and destroyers.

It seems that this raid/operation included CV Akagi, CV Kaga, CV Hiryu and CV Zuikaku.

I do not understand what he wants here. I mean he has yet to enter Java area and he has his carriers assaulting in CenPac and southern pacific.

Either I'am not getting the big picture or Dave is confident that his lba figters/bombers can do the "dirty" job at ABDA theatre.

China (february 3rd and 4th 1942)

IJA conducted some ground offensive assaults here yet again and we got hammered once more.

This battle took place

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at 81,49

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 22113 troops, 142 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 675

Defending force 15038 troops, 50 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 507

Japanese adjusted assault: 764

Allied adjusted defense: 77

Japanese assault odds: 9 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
231 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 12 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 21 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Vehicles lost 1 (0 destroyed, 1 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
7672 casualties reported
Squads: 169 destroyed, 170 disabled
Non Combat: 209 destroyed, 158 disabled
Engineers: 5 destroyed, 10 disabled
Guns lost 4 (2 destroyed, 2 disabled)
Units retreated 2

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
34th Division
57th Infantry Brigade

Defending units:
87th Chinese Corps
94th Chinese/C Corps

Hmmm. No penalties for the Japanese and I got downgraded by an experience and supply modificators. (I will post an pic from main unit in this battle).

I have actually changed the leader here and the commander is not half as bad. The unit exp level is 39. The support is a bit low along with the supply levels.

Than again my adjusted av value dropped from 507 --> 71! The gave me an terrain bonus of x3 and still this happened.

We managed to shoot down 231 enemy troops and none of the SHOCK assaulting units were destroyed. If you look at the losses we lost 7672 casualties and had 400 units destroyed.

Hmmm, I think the Chinese frontline might deserve another look from the developing team. This seems quite absurd to me.

...oh well the fight will continue for sure.

It seems not all the units that entered were force to shock assault here since the combat shows around 5000 men participating from IJA.

This is one hell of an army they have here too.

It is going to be almost impossible predict how fast the defense here collapses.

SireChaos -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/5/2009 11:44:00 PM)

The losses those units took must have hurt, though, at least these particular units.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/6/2009 4:01:18 AM)

Japan only starts with 3 full sized zero units. Tainain, Yamada, and one other that I can't remember. Two of the units satert in Takao, and the other one in Saigon. There are a couple of Claude units that can upgrade to zeroes, and then another one arrives in January I believe. So, 4-5 zero units is all that he has other than the ones on his carriers.

If I were him, I wouldn't risk my carriers around Java either if I thought that I could cover it with LBA. Too much risk of hitting a mine, running into a sub with working torpedoes, or of getting hit with a lucky air attack. Also, he can't afford aircraft losses from the carriers and using them in Java creates the risk of losing planes. By raiding in the central or southern pacific, he can try to knock off your merchants carrying fuel and supplies without worrying about losses since he knows he got two of your starting carriers.

That is just my two cents worth.

aztez -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/6/2009 8:22:29 AM)

SireChaos: Definately. I would love to take out couple of his armoured units. These are real nuisance all over the map.

I guess we shall soon see some big ground offensives. Especially at Manila, Singapore and China.

seydlitz: That intresting since he has some zero units in China. Propably in training purposes.

I did come up with the same conclusion regardin KB. If so that is an risky move in his part or as said he has total confidence with his lba fighters and bombers.

He has started bombing Palempang so this will be decieded soon. Once the Manila falls US submarines will move towards Java. Eventhough these guys really haven't hit anything so far in the game.

Those 2 lost US carriers is the reason why I'am thinking of moving RN carriers into Pacific along with lba fighters. I just checked that CV Hornet will arrive within 10 days.

At the moment there are 5 battleships ready for action in west coast.

Thankfully those merchants had unloaded their cargo / troops few days earlier so he was not in time with this raid.

That is an massive force with +3000 av value in total.

Luckily for us he did not bring down any forts here. I checked the units and key units are still in pretty good shape. Most of those casualties were "secondary" infantry.

Not much to do here except wait and duel it out since the pinzer movement has now isolated the capital city.

I did launch couple of bombardment assaults too and these achieved some success.

aztez -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/6/2009 8:46:32 PM)

China (february 5th and 6th 1942)

The enemy has now entered Loyang. I'am moving troops out with combat orders since I think this is waist of time to try to defend the base.

In total 11 enemy units are now assaulting the city,

I got knocked out near Nanyang too. These units are too low in experince to really contest IJA advance.

I'am withdrawing my units out of Nanyang. Reasons for this are quite obvious.

The base is an open terrain hex with no bonuses. It just has level 3 forts so that basically means crap with the new ground combat model.

I'am using kind of an variant of ideas seydlitz put ahead. We shall see how it will work out.

I do expect the first assault againts Loyang to begin immediately.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/6/2009 9:01:59 PM)

Good job in Manila and Singapore. If we had known about the supply bug before the fight at Clark I have no doubt that you could have made him pay even more dearly. As it is, try to tie up as many of his troops as you can for as long as possible.

In China, don't be afraid to click your units over to move mode. You will advance faster in that mode which will give you time to reposition. By staying in combat mode he might catch and fight you causing yet more casualties.

Even with your weak troops, you should be able to let the steam out of the steam roller over the next month by chosing where and when you fight.

aztez -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/6/2009 9:33:39 PM)

seydlitz: Yeah. The leaders do play more important role with AE. That's why those troops did well as they did.

With the crap leaders british and philippines have it would have all over already.

I'am using movement orders all the time in the rear areas. Only way to gain any ground in this wast country.

You kind of read my mind! [:D] ...I have actually decieded what areas will be defended. I will start moving units out of Liuchkow area since it has plenty to spare. These guys are moving towards northern areas.

Lets hope that steam will vanish. I take your word for it since you have some devious plans ongoing in your PBEM in Russia.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/6/2009 11:03:30 PM)

Your defensive analysis looks sound. In southern China Japan is constrained by fewer units and lack of a good rail network. These things should work in your favor.

However, if he is serious about China, you might see more units arrive after he finishes off the Philippines.

Xxzard -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/7/2009 4:14:57 AM)

I think you will be able to hold your key cities, they are in good terrain, and may even have forts. Moreover, in my first campaign, while I have found that the Chinese units need perhaps 10:1 AV to win over the japanese, if you are defending in a forest hex, and/or a rough hex you don't need nearly that much to defend successfully.

Don't let him surround you in your fortress cities though! Too many times that has been the downfall of old WITP allied players.

Sardaukar -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/7/2009 11:14:02 AM)

You are doing better tham I did against AI...in both Scen 6 campaigns AI took Singapore Jan 26....[:'(]

aztez -> RE: February 1942 begins... (9/7/2009 5:08:28 PM)

seydlitz: That is the most sensible defense I could come up with. Those 3 cities in the open terrain really was not worth of defending.

He has those +3000 av points in Philippines but he must move some of them to Malaya too since Singapore is not going to fall that easily. Another good thing is that his assaults failed this turn too.

Xxzard: Welcome aboard, I will defend the key cities such as Lanchow, Sian, Chungking, Kweiling and Liuchow. However defending Nanyang and Loyang would not made any operational sense since those were all deathtraps.

I'am using the terrain to my advantage and I think he really will have his handsfull if he continues to push forward.

Yeah, I know about those encirclements. Was the victim of few of them in the old witp.

Sardaukar: I think the sir Robin plus the leader changes helped out here. It didn't hurt either that the main focus for his offensives were definately Luzon.

It might take him a while to get things organized enough to capture the base at Singapore. My supply levels are in excellent shape,

aztez -> Manila holds out...new HR agreed... (9/7/2009 5:10:09 PM)

China (february 7th and 8th 1942)

A couple of developments here.

First we agreed on a new houserule in this area. This was not brought up by me but instead Dave did this.

"How about no voluntary shock attacks in china/manchuria/russia? Other areas of the map still OK to shock attack.

Only exception being if enemy troops have entered a city and you're trying to throw them out."

I guess we pretty much feel the same that Chinese are really getting short end of the stick here with all those shock assaults which are absolutely brutal.

This is agreed and this ties up my Soviet campaign into this stipulation sooner or later. Actually by the sound of this we might just battle out sooner rather than later. That is ofcourse reading between the lines.

I also stated that Dave has the power to lift this HR if he feels it is bringing him down here. That is not my call though.

This just shows how we pretty much do flexible stuff both ways and we never have had any serious disagreements on any issue brought up. So, hats off to him with this new HR.

There were some action too. As expected he assaulted the city of Loyang.

As you can see my army was out of the hex and just few units were left "defending" the city.

This retreat brought up intresting issue with ZOC. Those troops moved into hex 86,43! It had two enemy units in place. That is what the recon indicated and was to be true.

Now when I try to enter any orders for movement towards Sian I get an message telling me that movement not allowed! Hmmm, that is weird since this is the only hex I have had this problem, There were several other hexes with even worse situations and my troops were able to move out in combat formation.

I emailed about this to Dave since this kind of ruins the whole point of leaving Loyang. I will be posting this on technical support area.

Otherwise it was business as usual. The japanese launched minor skirmish assaults with shock orders and kicked the living crap out of the chinese units.

AVG was in action but didn't do much in the skies above Changhsa. I had moved some 20 fighters in but enemy zero fighters proved to be too stiff resistance.

The good thing is that the forts didn't get lowered and the offensive was repulsed.

I do not have any airpower in the area but I have been softening his troops with the big gun bombardments which has been somewhat effective.

Singapore (february 9th and 10th 1942)

It was an quiet turn all over the map.

The chinese "movement bug" was propably due to the misunderstanding regarding the new ZOC system. If I had known I would not have left Loyang or at least I would have kicked those 2 armoured units out of the hex. Oh well I need to do it now than.

Sometimes the good old language barrier hits you. My english is just decent not native standard.

Now back to the turn itself. The only real action was fought in Singapore.

Another assault repulsed but this time around it was an close call by looking at the adjusted av values. I do not have the turn yet but looks like the forts held up which is always good.

These offensives here and in Manila are far more vicious than those that were fought with old witp engine.

I put some of my units into reserve mode this time in order to gain some protection from lba bombardments. Now I will rotate them back to the combat mode.

Another +6000 enemy soldiers killed/wounded is not an bad result by any standards.
