Commander Cody:  Thanks. I will do another update this week. We are progressing but not a turn a day pace.

Definately the action is somewhat heated though.

zzodr:  Both sides have done few flying lessions [:D] ...the airwar is very intense in 1945.

Rob: Thanks Rob! Good to see you around the boards as well.

The japanese are definately in "good" shape but giving my utmost in terms of resistance and action. That is not an suprise though.

Yeah, the fuel is important but have few routes cleared so I should do ok.

Waiting to get my hands on the russians... they should carry quite a lot of firepower!

aztez -> RE: April 1945 (12/6/2011 5:23:20 PM)

Philippines (May 4th 1945)

Japanese navy have conducted multiple bombardment runs againts Manado.

Obvious target this one also since it has level 9 airfield already operational.

The raids have included the monster BB Yamato and other capital vessels.

My recon planes have been unable to spot the home harbour of these raids but that must be somewhere around DEI.

The air to air battles have raged on and in past turns the losses have been 150-400 in total.

Dave is using his divebombers somewhat aggressively and with high losses have sunk few ships.

The recon shows that Manila is the main base for his fighter operations.

Allied invasion of Mindanao is about to begin. Only minor or weak oppositon are expected on the ground.

This island will give me more support bases for aircraft and personel thus it needs to be seized.

The question is whether Dave will try to intervene with his naval assets.

Also supply convoys are heading and unloading at Leyte Gulf...

Burma / China (May 4th 1945)

Allied troops will start moving into Thailand.

Japanese have 63 units at Bangkok most likely behind very well build defenses.

It will take somedays before the enemy defensive plans becomes obvious.

In central China IJA laucnhed large scale ground offensive which was repulsed.

Now we will grind this one through and hopefully chinese are able to hold out.

pauk -> RE: April 1945 (12/6/2011 7:44:06 PM)

Yup, aztez, nice to see an old veteran's playing the game. I would be delight if you could update your AAR more frequently [:)]

One of the best AAR styles[&o] [8D]

aztez -> RE: April 1945 (12/6/2011 8:13:42 PM)

pauk: OMG! Likewise pauk! There are still quite a few oldtimers active here.

Never thought that I have now played this and witp regularly +5 years now!

Really good to see you still browsing the forums!  How have you been? I do hope everything is well in Croatia! [:)]

You playing AE? ... I know the AAR's got borked by few unnamed people so that is forums loss in general.

You are too somewhat guilty participant that I got into the witp in the first place! Well, among couple of others! [:D]

I know and promise to try to keep this AAR more frequent since quite a lot of happening or going to happen around the map.

I have two other PBEM's ongoing and RL have interfered these somewhat badly lately.

Damn long journey to get this and particulary looking forward of getting Soviets active. They have massive forces and now quite experienced aircrews too.

Also, KB is still operational amongs the Yamato monsters... so we shall see.

I'am still somewhat off from starting bombing campaign againts the home islands but should get to do that too in due time.

I will lose on points but than again this game has been journey and I think Dave has enjoyed this one too.

pauk -> RE: April 1945 (12/6/2011 9:57:13 PM)

heh! I did take a break from Witp for a few years... played something not so demading - Astro empires... free online game. It was a fun, but with each new server it becomes more and more difficult to play underdog. And, ofc (just in case that someone doubt[:D], devs interfered into this nice and easy playing game) and ruined it.

Croatia is fine for now, but we are expecting several tough years in front of us :)

No, i do not play AE, you know my reasons [;)]. But i do still lurk here and reading veteran's AARs. Its relaxating and interesting. Im trying to play WiTE now (and im using Finns to crush bad soviets [:D]) - its excellent game, but i dont have enough time for it - perhaps i grew up finaly?![;)]

And yes, your opponent is real devil.

crsutton -> RE: April 1945 (12/7/2011 1:35:04 AM)

Glad you are posting again. I have missed your updates. My game is at about 5/44 myself. Viperpol is a tough one to play in scen 2. He has pretty much taken China out, but I can't complain elsewhere. I have just about taken back all the Aleutians, isolated Rabaul, am pushing towards Rangoon and have been slugging it out around Sabang where I have a foothold and have been able to damage some of his oil. Problem is KB is intact. But I have yet to lose a CV myself. We have not had a carrier clash since about 3/43 and are due for one. And, it will be a big one when it happens.[;)]

aztez -> RE: April 1945 (12/27/2011 11:13:07 AM)

pauk: Good to hear that everything is fine down there. I doubt we never grow up completely to abandon these games! [:D]

I have been looking into that War in the East monster and definately something I might want to buy at some day.

Than again is would be waste of money now since don't have the time to learn it properly.

crsutton: I would call that progress after all the punishement you took in early war!

Actually sounds to me that the tide is definately turning and once you deal with his carriers you can step up the campaing.

If you win that clash ofcourse! ... [:D]

aztez -> May 1945 (12/27/2011 11:14:20 AM)

Philippines (May 16th 1945)

US forces have landed at Mindanao and made an succesfull invasion.

We now have firm foothold at Davao and are expanding our territory there.

Japanese made few bomber runs againts the invasion fleet but those were easily repulsed by allied pilots.

We have kept the pressure on againts Manila despite both sides getting substantial losses.

The idea is to increase increase allied bomber presence in this region step by step. We already made few runs againts Manila that were semi succesfull.

Dave has kept quite a few aircraft and ships docked at Takao. Last turn the B29's visited the base and did ok....

I wonder whether those bombs did damage to his ships. I have my doubts but than again there is always a chance.

B29's also visited Saigon so and scortched some aircraft there. That was an nice bonus also.

I have kept these guys training a bit so this might have been a bit of an suprise to him.

There is no sign of KB but it is definately somewhere close to Philippines.

I'am building up more airfields in this region and hoping to have few level 9's operational by early june.

In China Dave has not launched new ground offensives after that massive failed in central china.

At Burma troops are moving further into southern Thailand but it will take a bit before they enter Bangkok area.

aztez -> RE: May 1945 (1/29/2012 5:15:06 PM)

Time for an little update on this one.

I'am happy to say that RL seems to be a bit less hectic in near future. Thus the PBEM's will move forward a bit faster pace.

Now, we have entered into late May 1945...

Pacific (May 30th 1945)

Today is the day when first wave of B29's visit Japanese home islands.

I have send around 100 of them in 2 waves to bomb manpower there. Tha main target for initial hit will be Nagasaki.

Also send some bombers to drop mines at couple of ports. Palempang and Takao being the main targets for this one.

Add some B29's to visit the port of Singapore and we have some bombs falling next turn.

Meanwhile I'am in middle of cleaning up Mindanao to prevent enemy from flying search planes there.

Yet, undecieded where to land next but there are few options.

1) Luzon... that would give airfields even closer to his supply lines. The thing is that Dave has a lot of units there.
He also has some 75 units gathered at Takao which is somewhat intresting.

2) Borneo / DEI... well these are obvious choises and would cutt off his merchant routes and make it harder for him to operate his navy.

3) Marianas... this could be done BUT not happy about the CV rules so the risk is a bit high on this one.

4) Well.. to land somewhere else!!

I'am moving towards Bangkok... and RAF / US airforce has airsuperiority there. We might even bypass the city since he has 63 units defending the base.

At china... just moving stuff around and there is an possibility of offensive there to support the Soviets which will become active quite soon.

That is pretty much it... need also to find where the hell KB and Yamamoto ships are parked. Still no idea or sightings of them.

Here is the pic showing the pacific bases in late may 1945...

zzodr -> RE: May 1945 (1/31/2012 12:14:12 PM)

For me, it's all about the black stuff.. the Oil.
I'd grab Boela, Babo, Balikpapan, Samarinda, Tarakan, Miri and Brunei.
Then take Kuching, build the airfield up, and bomb the refineries at Palembang and Soerabaja back to the stone age if you
dont have the capacity/reach to take them as well. - That will slow the fuel supply up for the IJN quite a bit.

But it is late in the war, so perhaps a more direct route to the Home Islands is more your style?

aztez -> RE: May 1945 (1/31/2012 4:55:03 PM)

zzodr:  Yeah. I definately can't argue with black gold theme. I wonder whether it will actually do much harm in terms of his industry though since we are in summer of 1945's.

Than again we have few bases operational that we can bomb the Home Islands. (Finally...) ...and it feels good to get them.

Borneo could be useful in way that we could cut his ship lanes towards Burma. Especially Bangkok area where he has huge amount of troops operational.

Well.. I will think about this since had to push quite fast forward so need to shuffle few things also!

I did mine quite a few ports last turn with B29's and 4E bombers... touche that we did not torch much.

Oh.. and checked the red monster last turn... [:D] ... I must say that Kwantung army will have their hands full rather sooner than later!

aztez -> RE: May 1945 (3/19/2012 5:37:05 PM)

The game is ongoing and we are reaching the end of June 1945.

Dave took sometime time off due RL issues which is sometimes good and personally haven't been able to keep a turn a day cycle ongoing.

There has not been any significant advances and actually it is dangerous to advance even in 1945's againts quality and stubborn opponent.

Having said that things will heat up significantly. We are getting our strategic bombing campaign ongoing, Soviets will enter the game soon, Allied fleet is strong (So is KB), Chinese are getting stronger etc.

I will try to do an update once next turn arrives.

obvert -> RE: May 1945 (3/19/2012 9:34:44 PM)

Curious what aircraft the Japanese are using and what is giving your 4Es trouble?

Which vector of advance did you decide to eventually use in the end?

aztez -> RE: May 1945 (3/20/2012 6:43:57 AM)

obvert: At work but will post few screenies and combat results later tonight.

Last turn actually launched massive airstrikes againts multiple targets: Saigon, Bangkok, Takao, Manila, Saipan, Tinian, Guam and Pagan.

The results well.. a bit costly but well worth it.

As for your questions...

Dave seems to be using Ki-44-IIc Tojo, Ki-84a Frank, J2M3 Jack (not in quantity), N1K1-J Georg and diffrent Zero fighter variants.

Pretty hard to say which of those models are doing the best job but Tojo's definately can bring down and damage allied bombers.

The worst job... I think that Zero fighters aren't fairing that well againts allied bombers.

The night fighter model Dave has opted seem to be J1N1-Sa Irving and Ki-45 KAId Nick. Those are doing ok mostly damaging allied aircraft.

Personally flying bombers between 10 000 - 20 000 feet. I know I could carpet bomb him lower but that does not sound right and can do damage a bit further up.

The vector is semi decieded I guess...

I have established mutually supported airbases at Leyte Gulf. Those bases are pretty much fully operational. Thus that limits the vector a bit... and as you can see from the map (I will try to post it today) there options but bloody ones.

British and commonwealth troops are 40 miles north of Bangkok and expecting heavy resistance.

The Chinese well.. the supply is getting there so can start liberation there soon. Russians are preparing and have a lot of firepower with good experienced troops and aircraft.

aztez -> June 1945 (3/20/2012 5:20:40 PM)

The score at 25th June 1945.

Japanese aircraft losses are numbering near 30 000 ac lost and that must have an impact.

We are still running behind but the strategic losses will start to increase now that our bombers can visit Japan itself.

Here is promised and quite heavily edited allied air offensive from the new turn.

The total aircraft losses. F6F-3 Helcat has been busy engaging the enemy.

This picture gives you an good idea what type of aircraft Dave has been building along the way.

aztez -> RE: June 1945 (3/20/2012 5:23:07 PM)

Allied naval losses have been heavy. There are plenty of CVE's an cruisers also at bottom of the sea.

I must say that few lucky runs and battles could have shifted the losses significantly.

Burma (25th June 1945)

There are two strong elements of resistance around Bangkok.

The recon flights show 32 units north of Bangkok and 38 units in the city itself.

Commonwealth spearhead is closing in and actually thinking whether we could bypass the city alltogether.

That might be a bit tricky to do though since really cannot leave such strong enemy assembly behind the lines.

Thus I think we might have to grind this through allthough don't like the idea.

Allied have airsupremacy when needed here and maybe the bombers can shift the tide here.

If the japanese front collapses around Bangkok it will be freeride all the way to Saigon and Singapore.

Decisions, decisions... that is the mantra of game now.

China (25th June 1945)

Not much happening here.

We have had few skirmishes and one bigger battle in central china which I was able repulse.

The last few months we have been stabilizing the front and gathering strenght.

As you can see the chinese supply situation has dramatically increased.

I will make push here once the Soviets become activated. Thus preventing Dave from removing his armies here.

aztez -> RE: June 1945 (3/20/2012 5:25:44 PM)

The KB is still strong force and trying to locate his battleships and main fleet.

Allied signit have not produced that data yet but the feeling I have that these ships are in Japan.

The latest "heavy radio tranmissions" detected have been near Tokyo.

That is unconfirmed as of yet.

Either he hides his assets for the rest of the game OR he will make few more last dashes.

aztez -> RE: June 1945 (3/20/2012 5:26:24 PM)

Manchuko area is one big waiting game. Tik tak tik tak....

Soviets have moved their aircrews into frontlines and must say that they are nicely experienced now.

Really cannot comment what his strong areas and weak zones here are but not long to find that out.... one thing for sure is that massive battles wait.

aztez -> RE: June 1945 (3/20/2012 5:27:11 PM)

Philippines (25th June 1945)

The Leyte Gulf area has 3 operational bases now.

We have bombed Manila and Takao from here.

Also the bases are B29 capable and within an striking distance from Home Islands.

There regular nightime visits againts several cities including Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Osaka etc.

That operational campaign is just heading up.

Allied bombers have dropped several thousand of mines into ports in this region.

Those have been somewhat uneffective but maybe it is just FOW.

As said earlier.. decisions... decisions... there are no easy pickings from now on only tears and blood.

The japanese have several operational bases here so moving Carriers especially is tricky.

Last turn we launched multiple strikes againts enemy airfields including Takao especially.

Dave has 75-80 units ready there to be moved and had +200 ships docked there.

Thus I bombed those transport ships and managed to get quite a few hits.

If we hinder enemy potential to move troops around that will definately help.

Keep in mind that Japanese do hold Baloelab and Marianas which is something I do not like at all.

Where to go.. land at Luzon, Marianas, Formosa, Okinawa area, Borneo... plenty of options but first things first.

obvert -> RE: June 1945 (3/21/2012 9:08:19 AM)

Thanks for all of the updates. Really good to get some info from this point in the war. Looks like it's hotly contested. If you could close your back door by getting the Marianas and then push up to Luzon you'll be in good shape. Plus the Russian hordes of course.

Any kami strikes yet in your game?

No problems. Agreed, it is and will be hotly contested.

I think the choices are to jump towards Borneo, surrounding bases around Luzon or as you said Marianas.

The problem with Marianas is that he has solid mutually supported bases which are well guarded.

The bright side of that is that I could close down most of the airfields and mine the area. Which I have actually done.

it would be damn bloody and not sure whether effort weights towards the gains. Maybe..

aztez -> July 1945 (5/23/2012 7:04:26 PM)

July 9th 1945

We are grinding on with this PBEM. Unfortunately RL stuff have kept the game is slower pace.

Most of the action is battled around Philippines. (As you can see from below combat summary).

Japanese ASW is beyond laser guided in this PBEM. He is damaging allied submarines for fun.

Burma and China are slowly getting more heated.

Soviets are about month away from activation. We have agreed that Japanese can side equivalent of 2 divisions per month there from China. Dave proposed that there are no restrictions but that is the best we came up with.

Allied B29's are slowly grinding japanese cities but the results are mediocre. This is mostly because the range of the flights are +30 hexes and I'am forced to use them at night. Ofcourse I could mass +100 of them on single target but that is not very "nice thing" to do.

I'am not playing for the points either so really can't be bothered.

There are still no sign of japanese main fleets. Those are definately not at Singapore or western part of Japan. Nor are those in DEI or Marianas. Thus this leaves me to believe that he is hiding them at Tokyo.

A bit suprised that allied signit has not given any indication of these ships.

Oh well.. maybe we have some intel before the game ends.

As for invasions. Well, there are options.. unfortunately don't like most of them at the moment. Very risky maneuvers that could backfire completely.

Meanwhile here are the main events from past 4 rounds of gameplay. It is focused around Philippines.
