Pacific (August 24th 1945)

Japan

The allied bombers continue to visit Japanese home islands. I'am especially happy with the hits on Maebashi where Dave has a lot of aircraft production in place.

I know I could target specific factories etc but I think manpower bombings are more historical and that is why you will see only manpower hits.

aztez -> RE: August 1945 / Kobe hit with A-bomb (8/1/2012 4:30:17 PM)

Japanese ASW in the AE (pics included) summary 1941-1945's

Since very few games have reached this far and there has been quite a lot of talk how historical the Japanese ASW is in the game.

Well, here are the allied submarine losses (quite a few screenies to take).

These losses are 98% from deep water hexes so not many have been lost in shallow hexes.

I know Dave is not using any gamey tactics to achieve this. I do know that he is using some landbased bombers but that is it.

As you can see the losses are horrific. In return the allied submarines mostly have hit PB's, xAKL's and smaller stuff.

Very few destroyers have been hit... not even to start think of carriers.

Many times those bigger ships have passed through allied submarine patrol zones but the submarines do not attack or fire duds in the first 2 years.

The submarine warfare is not that effective and in terms of losses well.. it is "borked" in the stock scenarios.

These subs have been using patrol zone option with max. 1 day stay overall in some hex. Thus keeping them moving around have not helped at all.

Add those submarines in the docks and the list actually would be couple of pages longer....

I know DaBabes have tweaked the ASW part somewhat.. whether it is actually much diffrent well we need to wait months or +1 year to anyone actually starting to reach closer to these dates.

The Japanese E-boats are definately deathstars themselves... but not all of it is their doing.

Even the allies in the Atlantic do not compare againts the rising sun ASW efforts.

Anyone starting pure stock game... well I would recommend turning OFF the realistic dud rates to somehow actually balance this mess.

There definately is a lot of things messed up in pure stock scenarios that should be fixed in future patches...!

crsutton -> RE: August 1945 / Kobe hit with A-bomb (8/1/2012 6:01:12 PM)

Yes, I feel your pain. My sub losses have been very dramatic as well. Primarily due to the super escort type ships which sink about 75% of my subs, but Japanese air ASW is too effective as well. The Japanese super E has has been toned down bit time in da Babes and you can now download modifed stock scenarios with this fix as well. But of course, it does not affect our two year old stock campaigns.

Targeting is another issue as there will be no fix to the Allies subs shooting at patrol craft over valuable merchants. Basically even with the super E fix, I think a good Japanese player can at least neutralize the Allied sub effort to the point where it is not a serious issue in the game. That is just the way it is. I have taken to use my subs to support major offensives instead of hunting merchants as I can at least provide cover for my subs and they will target a few warships. But in stock, any attempt to use subs out of the cover of Allied air and the late war Japanese escorts will find it and sink it.

Yeah. As said those were just the sunk ones. Plenty of damaged submarines as well. Only brightside is that they can enter back usually within a month or so.

I'am using the DaBabes fix in the game vs FDRLincoln. Hopefully, it will at least make the submarine fleet a bit more threat to the enemy. The problem is that you really don't know how much of an effect it will have since the game takes monhts/years to enter the late war period. By the time you enter that timezone it is too late regret anything unless you want to start all over again.

Thus, I'am biting and cursing the losses. Just trying to keep them in deep water hexes as said so just maybe the uber ASW don't nail them immediately.

I'am using them also with attack fleets / frontlines but not as extensively as you do since really would like to target transports/merchants/warships that bring stuff back to Japan. I guess using them as they "should be". Pretty much an death sentence and those that aren't hit well they are just happy to be alive.

I do concur 100% with the aircover though if you want to keep them floating and operational. However that prevents quite a lot of missions for them and that is not fun either.

How is the flak (AA) in your game? It has been abysmal in this one and the other vs katsuragi. Those two things definately are major issues in these longrunning campaigns. The flak is well non-existant even in 1945's. (Again hoping that the vs FDRLincoln with the Babes "AA fix" changes that too.. the problem again is that it takes so long to see whether it actually helps or not)

..and while we are on the not so positive subject.. have you had any luck sinking capital ships with the naval bombs? I think they tweaked those downwards in stock patches due to ground effectiviness (Which I agree was too powerful)... now the naval part of the bomb damages should have been left untouched. No fix on that as much as I'am aware off.

crsutton -> RE: August 1945 / Kobe hit with A-bomb (8/1/2012 6:48:44 PM)

I am doing OK with bombs. They have not been tweaked in stock. The one issue I have with Da Babes is that they have tweaked bomb damage quite a bit. To tone down air vs LCU but I think it may have a detremential effect elsewhere. My understanding is that both the ASW issue with super Es and Allied flak have been fixed in Da Babes and I think JWE made the same fixes in the stock senarios that can be downloaded at the Da Babes site. I am anxious to give Da Babes a try but can only do one campaign at at time and Viperpol is doing too well vs me to consider quitting...[;)]

Problem with stock is that the Allies do get bigger bombs later in the game but it is tied to experience. And my experience is that Allied bomb crews don't gain enough experience to ever really see the bombs. So while the Japanese player gets to see some nasty AP bombs on later plane types, the Allied player is stuck with the 1,000 pound GP which is good for killing carriers and CAs but not very good against BBs.

And the issue with Allied flak in stock is that there is a bug with dual purpose guns where they just do not fire at aircraft. This is fixed in Babes and I understand that flak can be very dangerous there.

I am beginning to see how difficult this in in late war. I am playing scen 2 and Japan can put up massive strike forces. While the CAP fighters can only do so much, when they get past them Allied flak wont stop the attack. I am just starting to see kamikaze planes and am worried that it might be a game breaker. It certainly calls for me to be more cautious.

aztez -> RE: August 1945 / Kobe hit with A-bomb (8/1/2012 7:03:15 PM)

Yeah. I keep seeing those battleships again and again despite being hit dozen times in my games! [:D]

I'am using that scenario downloaded from DaBabes site.. stock scenario 8th with ASW and AA tweaks vs FDRLincoln. Too early to say what the diffrence actually is since only hitting late december 1941. Thus far seems quite the same but as said having poor equipment with the troops so we shall see.

Really hoping those tweaks make a dramatic diffrence though.

It is actually somewhat difficult... if you get hammered in China early on it is difficult to get things on the roll. If you want you can bomb the oilfields to dust early you can do that from New Guinea.

Well.. check the Philippines in this one and you definately can get bogged down! [:D] ...on a brighter note invading Marianas vs katsuragi... [:D]

crsutton -> RE: August 1945 / Kobe hit with A-bomb (8/2/2012 5:42:26 AM)

Funny how it can vary. Both my top two aces 21 and 23 kills have been promoted to Brigadier General. One on the day before he was shot down and killed. Yet I see that none of yours have made it to brigadier yet.

aztez -> RE: August 1945 / Kobe hit with A-bomb (8/2/2012 6:16:37 AM)

Yeah, no Brigadier Generals for me! I know there are big air to air battles ahead so who knows someone might make that leap.

Definately! My other PBEM games have taken somewhat diffrent routes and battle areas comparing to this one.

I would say it all boils down winning some major naval battles and holding on at China. If you are lucky to hurt Japanese side lets say late 1942 or early 1943 more options become available.

..thus with all the planning etc you definately need luck in your side as well!

FatR -> RE: August 1945 / Kobe hit with A-bomb (8/2/2012 9:28:07 PM)

Stock naval ASW is broken, no doubt of that. Nerfing uber-Es and ASW payloads for everyone in general should reduce its lethality in updated scenarios. Althoughs Scen 2 seems to still have uber-Es at full power.

As about air ASW, getting a decent coverage requires a huge resource sink, so I don't believe it is broken. Although I'm not sure about late war, past middle 1944 where number of Japanese airgroups snowballs.

aztez -> RE: August 1945 / Kobe hit with A-bomb (8/5/2012 10:04:03 AM)

FatR: Yeah. I agree.. really hard to say whether it is specialized aircrews that are causing an menace as well. Pretty much hate those uber-E's though! [:D]

LoBaron -> RE: August 1945 / Kobe hit with A-bomb (8/11/2012 10:06:48 AM)

FatR: Yeah. I agree.. really hard to say whether it is specialized aircrews that are causing an menace as well. Pretty much hate those uber-E's though! [:D]

Great to see your war ongoing aztez! [:)]

What I do wonder is what the rationale was behind fixing/nerfing the uber-Es in scen 1 but leaving them as-is in scen 2.

We are playing stock scen 1, and the Es have been fixed there. As it was obviousely a too high hit chance when a certain threshold of launchers was exceeded,
I cannot really see a reason not to correct every stock scen. Your sub losses look brutal, aztez!

I might add that my US sub losses (Robīs are a bit higher with the CW SS fleet, but not by much, because his area covers the shallow waters of the DEIs) ammount to 7
TOTAL by Jan 1st, ī44 (minus the submarines sunk by the strike on Manila on Dec 7th), and of those only 3 by DC attacks. Admittedly I use my subs conservatively, but have quite
an ok success rate with em, obviousely most of the kills are from the last year (88 confirmed kills total from MK 10 and MK 14 torps).
