No screenshots in this update since at work. Things are progressing slowly ahead.

July 15th 1945

Burma

We have had few air to air skirmishes over the Bangkok. The losses have been around 1:1 thus the experience levels of his pilots must be pretty high.

Commonwealth forces took Ayuthia last turn. Intresting since two turns ago our recon indicated +30 enemy units at the base. Now, it seems we are soon set for big bloody mess at Bangkok since they must have around +60 units defending the city.

The good thing is that We do have air supremacy in this sector and will move bombers into action starting next turn. I have no idea what kind of av he has stacked at Bangkok.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Ayuthia (56,61)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 118212 troops, 2198 guns, 2704 vehicles, Assault Value = 4790

CenPac and Philippines

Dave seems to hopping some bomber squadrons around since I have had to bypass few bases.

That is definately annoying since I cannot cover every single TF sailing these areas.

I'am still looking for his carriers and main battleship fleet. There is absolutely 0% intel where they are hidden.

This would be golden intel for me...

Japanese have very large ground forces at Luzon and Formosa. I thin I have spotted +150 units in total.

Allied are not ready yet to advance forward since we are a bit scattered here.

B29's have continued their raids on Home Islands flying at 9000 feet at night. The results are below mediocre so need to change this thing a bit I think.

Manchuko / Soviet Union

To summarize things.. We are ready for this clash. Two more weeks and the battle will commence unless Dave activates the front earlier.

Dave told that BB Musashi did eat an torpedo. Whether it is true... well that is anyones guess.

I'am still a bit dazzled where did these ships came from. I have quite a few bombers and search aircraft flying patrols in the area.

These guys failed to pick up the origin of his battleships. Oh well.. he will strike out eventually here.

In the meantime allied bombers hit Takao after brief pause...

Japanese troops are withdrawing towards Saigon. They have actually abandoned Bangkok alltogether and heading south.

Thus we should be able to liberate Bangkok and Tavoy next turn.

aztez -> August 1945 (6/30/2012 9:17:06 PM)

Pacific (August 2nd 1945)

Here are some pics from the game dated in early august 1945.

The strategic bombing campaign is not going as strongly as I wanted. Than again we are forced into nightime 9000 feet strikes and our main bases are hotly contested near Luzon.

I would say that Marianas are somewhat better place to do this campaign but we are forced to work with what we got.

Just wondering whether nighttime 9000 feet is actually the most effective altitude... go figure...

We are definately using A-bombs as soon as they become available. Need level more of the home islands and take out some of the fighting spirits.

Despite the heavy air losses Dave definately still have fighting airforce left with good pilots and airplanes. Allthough the last few weeks cost him dearly. Not going take anything away from my esteemed opponent here.

Allied signit is still pretty much useless. By useless I mean that it still has not given out coordinates of his remain battle fleets or carriers. That is odd since I do fly extensive recon missions.

We actually had small naval skirmish near Manado few days back. The recon planes spotted BB Nagoto and some cruisers heading South West???... could that mean the fact that those ships are somewhere near Soerabaja / Batavia.

Anyways. those ships are hiding somewhere and would love to flush them out. Personally doubt that the KB is around Java.

I can also state that despite all the resources available you really do not have too much of fuel stocked in the frontlines. That is an fact to any allied allied players reaching the late months.

Dave also hit quite a few AO's in past months. That is somewhat annoying and definately has hindered my carrier operations lately.

In CenPac and Philippines have been stalemated. Japanese are trying occasional surface raids againts the forward bases and also launching some Kamikaze missions. We are doing our best to repulse them. The future options in this sector seem grinding affairs... so once I have few things sorted we need to hit somewhere. There are not many good options...

Burma / Thailand is also odd business. Allied forces marched into abandoned Bangkok and if the recon is correct those troops withdrew mostly towards Saigon??? That is odd in a sense that I was betting that he would be moving towards Singapore. Oh well.. need to adjust some of my operations to correspond to this maneuvere. The good thing is that Bangkok is ours and time to start moving support troops there.

We also launched small amphibitous landings at Kiska. It went as expected... well not exactly since that is stalemate situation currently. I need move some stronger troops there to finish those japanese off.

In China we are moving forward but it is not an picnic since japanese are putting up decent numbers on the defense. He is using terrain bonuses and forts in his favour and the Chinese aren't exactly modernized nor have the enermous amount of supplies nor engineers available. This offensive will continue however since we need support the Russian troops and other areas on the map.

That leaves us to the biggest news of the months. The "Sleeping giant" is on the move! I'am going into massive full scale offensive at Manchuko. After hundreds of clicks it became pretty obvious that this is an gigantic army with massive airforce to back things up. The troops are just moving forward so no battle action yet... but flying extensive recons here and large ground bombing campaings immediately. I don't know what Dave has here but he will need hell of an lot firepower to stop this juggernaught....

Here are few pics from the game dated 2nd of august 1945....

Great to see an update!

crsutton -> RE: August 1945 (7/1/2012 4:24:31 PM)

Nice to see you are posting.

Ouch! How on earth did he activate the Soviets for you? I don't think anything else matters. This is the end of the war for him.

Have you managed to cut off his DEI oil sources? If not, he can still produce tons of aircraft.

aztez -> RE: August 1945 (7/1/2012 5:37:02 PM)

Dave will on vacation next week. He does have his laptop with him but we shall see whether we get few turns done.

I'am also enjoying the summer vacation and have 3 weeks left. Just hoping that the weather would warm more! [:D]

JocMeister: Thanx. I try to keep this AAR posted more regularly until the end.

crsutton: Well.. I think we reached the Soviet activation date in the game. It seems it was august 1st 1945! [:D]

Yes, the Soviets have massive firepower stacked so intresting to see what kind of an resistance he can put up. Intresting days ahead.

Well.. he can still ship from Palempang and few other bases in the DEI if he routes his tankers accordingly. No doubt he is doing so as well.

I will try to stop this soon as possible. Eventhough that really doesn't matter that much since he most likely has already piled up engines and HI.

This has been an journey which is the most important factor and feels good to see the end screen moving closer.

DRF99 -> RE: August 1945 (7/1/2012 10:34:45 PM)

Aztez,

I've been following your AAR just about since I first started reading this forum.

I can't wait to see what the Soviets can do. Will they steamroller like what really happened or who knows? This is the first AAR I've read where they've activated on the historic date.

Cheers,
DRF

aztez -> RE: August 1945 (7/2/2012 8:27:31 PM)

DRF99: Appreciated. I do hope that you have learned few things "not to do" at least! [:D]

As for Soviets.. wellI think it is 50/50 whether we can steamroll the whole place. I know Dave is moving units from China to defend the oncoming juggernaught.

I have better intel once the next turn arrives. Really need to check how his stacks are deployed here.

I think this was one of the first PBEM's to start once the game was released. Also there are very few AAR's that have entered to this late date.

Well.. the game deserves these and hopefully we have few new forum members that have bought the game due to AAR section.

I know I did bought the old Witp after reading Pzb's and Pauk's AAR few years back.

crsutton -> RE: August 1945 (7/4/2012 3:10:01 AM)

Well, I think the Soviet units-especially the tank units have way much more firepower. Better squads and devices. Japanese can't stop shermans, I doubt they will do much vs T34s and SU122s. Plus Soviets get some full tank and mech divisions. Even if he can match you in numbers, you can just grind away. Not to mention the far superior artillery.

aztez -> RE: August 1945 (7/4/2012 10:12:41 AM)

crsutton: True. The Soviet armour is massive! [:D] ...and a tons of artillery.

I do agree that the best way to get full out of them is to grind, grind and grind forward.

The airforce is quality as well only lacking legs with the fighters. Intresting to see whether Dave will even try to contest the skies here. I would love him to do so.

Your game is not that far from this date I gather??? ...or has it slowed down a bit.

crsutton -> RE: August 1945 (7/4/2012 3:29:47 PM)

9/44. We get about 5 or 6 turns in a week. Viperpol does not make many mistakes so it has been a grind. We had our first big carrier battle since early 43 with the full KB vs the full American fleet. Of course half of my carriers reacted and I got the worst of it but can't complain. We both lost about an equal number of carriers with me having a lot more damaged. However, in the end I can't complain as I can afford the losses and he can't.

Most of my success has been in the DEI where a late 43 invasion of Sabang led to a tough long fight but I eventually gained the edge. He has evacuated the Malay Pennisula and I am about to take Singapore. Rangoon has fallen and I have knocked his oil facilities hard. It has been much tougher in the Pacific where I am having a time take Baledaob. Considering that it is scen 2, I am happy with my progress. I think the loss of his oil will hurt him the most.

The biggest factor is that for the first time in the game I feel like my airforce can beat his anywhere we meet. In scen 2 it takes a good while.

aztez -> RE: August 1945 (7/4/2012 5:34:54 PM)

That sounds to me like you guys would have done fantastic AAR in that game. Intresting how diffrent outcomes play out.

You definately should be happy with your progress. I think you have done fantastic job.

Yeah. The better fighters and number bombers do play vital roles.

As for carrier clashes.. pretty much unlucky as you. This one definately has not gone my favour.

I have my other PBEM vs katsuragi entering summer 1944 and I think we have had 3 big battles in that one. Maybe 4.. anyways I have had better luck in that one there.

aztez -> RE: August 1945 (7/4/2012 9:12:30 PM)

Pacific (August 4th 1945)

As expected I was eager to see what the Soviet airforce could do on their initial strikes.

The ground target damage was moderate but we did quite close down the airfield at Mutankiang.

Dave did not fly much of an CAP anywhere except at Parashimuro Jima were he seems to have Oscar's stationed.

The russian airforce was not completely ineffective either and we did hit quite a few cargo ships sailing in Japanese vicinity.

Also we bombed the industrial targets at Wakkanai, Toyohara and Shikuka.

An good start to this campaign I would say...

All in all pretty quiet turn but few developments as expected.

Troops are still advincing to their jump off points. Really would love to have this setup so that you could already move ground units in peace time.

That would let you setup your defensive and offensive perimeters before the Russia activates without the chance of you activating it.

No ground combat yet... few tank units are already in place while some are still marching forward.

Few russian submarines hit mines in their effort to break out the Japanese seas.

Also the first torpedoed enemy transport is reported despite the crew paying it with their lives.

I'am launching operation FREEDOM next turn. This has two objectives...

1) Heavily close down and bomb any remaining airfields in the DEI and Philippines area.
2) Close down Marianas chain for good. Thus making it one big POW camp.
3) Deny Japanese economy from much needed raw materials. Especially OIL...

This will continue until the above objectives are accomplished!
