SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/10/2010 3:50:58 AM)

Feb. 6/42 Update:

Sub Ops:

I was lucky in the Celebes and around Saishu with Allied subs hitting with duds, so no losses. I'm concerned that attacks are happening again so I'll reroute again. So far my rerouting has worked very well, limiting opportunities for Allied submarines. I'm still completely disappointed in my ASW not responding or when they do, losing contact resulting in no DC attack.

The Philippines:

I'm 2 days away from launching the final ground assault on Bataan. Today was another bombing raid followed by an artillery barrage. No idea on casualties from the air attack, but the ground bombardment netted 224 Allied casualties to my 11. AV comparison on Bataan right now is Japanese 1768 to Allied 1448.

Borneo:

A Shock attack by my units chasing the Tarakan force in the jungle northeast of Balikpapan was a stalemate, with 66 casualties to 61 in favour of the Allies.

The Celebes:

Tawi Tawi is captured.

Sumatra:

Another sweep over Palembang showed no allied fighters, and another bombing raid on the airfield yielded little damage. More importantly recon showed that Smeulders has withdrawn his air units.

China:

The 110 Div. launches it's own attack at 89,38 driving back the Chinese causing 644 casualties. Japanese losses were 13.

At Changsha I'd decided to maneuver south of the city, crossing the river and hitting the bases to the west to envelop Changsha. As soon as Smeulders saw I was trying to flank him, it looks like he plans to withdraw from the city. It could be a ruse, or maybe not his entire force moving (last report was 36 enemy units), but I don't care, I'm crossing the river and beating up whatever stands in my way. My units to the east of Changsha will motion towards the city in case he does retreat. I have almost 5000AV here and if he leaves the city I will pursue. I'm looking forward to not having to crack that nut.

A-29A Hudson's made an appearance over my units south of Changsha and bombed them, causing 52 casualties. Smeulders is trying to slow down my flanking maneuver. I'll try and get some CAP in the area, but getting quality fighters in the area is tough. With PDU off, this is much more difficult, I'm not able to upgrade many of my Nate units right now, until new fighters come on line. Both Mike Solli and I are playing with PDU off, which in hindsight will really suck for us. [:D]

I'll post some new screenshots to update the major theatres soon.

Thanks for following along.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/10/2010 4:36:19 AM)

I've read in the threads a lot about a "Sir Robin" Allied defense, I'm wondering if this is what I am up against? I think Smeulders will fight for Java, but right now in China and Burma it is withdrawal after withdrawal. As soon as I bomb an airbase anywhere on the map the units are withdrawn. There has been no sign of the Allied fleet anywhere, other than the successful raid on Balikpapan, and the constant submarine presence of course. And I cannot locate any Allied transport TF's...anywhere! I have subs patrolling around many of the major ports and no sightings at all.

So far it's been a great strategy for him, if not very fun to play against. He's picking away with minimal force, causing substantially greater loss to me than to himself. I don't think there is another AAR ongoing right now that has seen the success Smeulders has had against me with his Allied submarine force. I've lost close to 50 ships to submarine action in the first 2 months of the war. I have to admit it's been very frustrating.

In the meantime I continue to take bases and cities cheaply. I'm in a postion now to be covered by LBA when I go into Sumatra and Java, and with recon I'll have a much better idea of his strength and maybe I'll start getting some TF sightings. I can't help thinking the lack of any opportunities to sink his ships will have dire consquences for me later. I don't see what I can do differently without exposing myself to high risk port attacks under his LBA and/or carrier air units in the hope of finding some shipping by KB. I've decided that once Port Moresby is taken I may take KB on a tour deep into the southeast pacific and see if anything turns up.

Should I be content to capture what I can at little cost and set up a solid defense and just wait? Is KB worth keeping intact for the defense of the perimeter when the eventual Allied counterattack begins? This game is a learning one for me so my intitial thoughts are to be conservative, but I'm itching to hurt him somewhere! My planned priority of conquests right now are:

1. Finish up Bataan and Singapore quickly.
2. Ambon
2. Consolidate the Solomons and New Guinea (I think being able to grab this early will allow me more freedom later)
3. Sumatra
4. Java
5. Northern Australia
6. Burma
7. Use my fleet to hunt out and destroy whatever I may find once my territories are secure. I just hope it's not 1943 before I accomplish this!

Just some musings of a newbie, nothing earth shattering here. Just voicing some thoughts and wondering what other Japanese players may have done in the past when faced with a simliar situation. [&:]

bklooste -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/10/2010 10:25:15 AM)

Best way to fight a sir robin is pressure and attacks by a small amount of forces recon is especially important.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/17/2010 1:28:21 AM)

Hi everyone.

Things have been busy for me lately, and I've been a little derailed from updating the AAR. Here are a couple of screenshots of Burma and New Guinea as of Feb. 12/42. I've looked at things a little differently lately in view of some interesting developments in other AAR's. To that extent, I'm changing my overall strategic outlook somewhat and plan on being much more focused in terms of where my assets are going to go. I think I've lost focus on my strategy somewhat, it's always been a work in progress, but I'm going to try and think months ahead now rather than daily as I've been doing somewhat.

Singapore is being assaulted directly now. The AV comparison is almost 3:1 in Japan's favour. My first shock attack has reduced the fort level at Singapore to 1 (from level 3) and the losses were managable for me. 5590 Japanese casualites to the Allies 4107 with one unit being eliminated. Another shock attack will follow on the 13th.

I continue to bombard Bataan, but will start the ground assault there shortly too. I'm pretty much in limbo until I get these two operations wrapped up.

Here is the Burma theatre:

I'll update China next with screenshots.

I will update Sumatra and the Celebes once both Singapore and Bataan have fallen. I need the troops freed up before I can invade anything. So far I've been moving fuel and supplies in anticipation of the next major invasions. The only delay I forsee is the clearing of mines in the ports, and redirecting the shipping required for the next assaults. Catch you next time, and as always thanks for following along.

Feb. 13/42 Update:

Just glossing over the major event of the day. Singapore has fallen after the 2nd shock attack. 60637 Allied troops lost to Japan's 2955. Damage to the city will require some repair, but overall not too bad. Minesweepers are en route to clear the port and the troops will rest and prep for their next objectives. Shipping is standing by until the port is cleared. Singapore fell faster than I thought, so my fleet units have been caught too far away at the moment. I will get some there quickly. Next up, gaining air supremacy over Southern Sumatra and Northwest Java.

Banzia!

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/18/2010 8:59:09 PM)

Feb. 14/42 Update:

Another failed Shock attack at Bataan. Japanese causalties were 5000+ with most only disrupted. Allied losses were 2000+ with a couple of small support units being eliminated. I'd have been happy with a reduction of 1 in the fort level at least, but I didn't even get that. So the siege continues.

I am struggling coming to terms with almost 2 weeks of air (60+ bombers per raid) and/or artillery bombardment attacks of 500+ guns (including 6 ART units with some heavy mortars) as well as 2 shock attacks not even making a dent in the defenses. I thought the experience level of the defenders wasn't supposed to be all that great either. The best odds I've ever achieved have been 1:2. The fort level is 4 and has remained at 4, having never been reduced even one level. I do have engineer units, 8 of them, so I don't undertand why the fort level is not budging. Mind you, they are not all combat engineer units. The latest attack showed the defenders suffering no disruption penalty either. Are you telling me all of Bataan's defenders are immune to almost 2 weeks of bombardment, not to mention poor morale from getting shelled everyday? I wouldn't think the fortifications would physically be able to accomodate every defender. Anyway, whatever, I'm behind as it is so more delay will hardly matter, I'll bring in reinforcements and end this debacle once and for all.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/19/2010 12:00:36 AM)

Feb. 14/42 Northern China:

Can anyone confirm for me that the 30 unit Chinese army should have it's supply route blocked and be out of supply after I force out the Chinese unit in the hex southeast of Sian? Is it sufficient to occupy the road hex, or is there some kind of hexside control rule I have to worry about allowing supply to that Chinese force? Thanks.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/19/2010 3:31:20 AM)

Feb. 15/42 Update:

New Guinea:

The Allied SS S-23 made an appearance 1 hex east of Buna today and launched two 4 torpedo salvos at a DD I had on ASW patrol, all missed and no DC hits were recorded.

KB it steaming N.W. to refuel at Babeldoab and looks like it has shaken Allied recon, so I'm hoping to keep Smeulders in the dark for awhile. Ground units from Buna have started towards PM. Allied numbers look to be about 12k at PM, so I'm not sure I'll have enough strength to storm it outright. 2 Inf. Bde.'s, 2 Naval Gd. units, 1 armoured unit, 1 Artillery unit. I'll work on getting some reinforcements possibly flown in.

The Philippines:

Bataan was bombarded today strictly by artillery units. I lost 1 gun and inflicted 201 Allied casualties. I've rebased the bomber units at Clark Field to Cagayan on Mindanao. They will eventually end up on Manado to support the Kendari and Ambon operations.

Malaya:

47 mines were swept at Singapore and transport shipping is standing by to move into the port.

China:

A very good day for me in this theatre.

23rd Army units reached Wuchow and bombarded the base causing 41 casualties.
Sally's bombed one of the small Chinese units in my rear causing 14 guns to be destroyed then a Naval Gd. unit shocked attacked causing another 5 guns to be destroyed. The only bad thing was the Chinese unit then retreated towards Sian blocking my supply route. [:@] I will try and eliminate it next turn by air bombardment.

1 hex southeast of Sian, my armoured recon launched a shock attack to try and force the small Chinese unit out of the hex and ended up attacking a Chinese corps unit as well that had crossed the river from Sian. Surprisingly I inflicted 207 Chinese casualties to my 6. Now here is the kicker. That Chinese force then shock attacked in return, and low and behold my pursuit tactic from the previous turn paid off again. 1400 AV had reached my armoured recon unit and the Chinese corps was completely trashed. Casualties were 0 for Japanese forces, and the Chinese corps received 5308, almost all destroyed.

My forces have linked up in northern China around Yenan and I can now hound the Chinese continually as they withdraw west.

Japan:

I received a lot of LCU reinforcements today, four Naval Gd. units that will comprise my Ambon invasion force. A massive troop/supply convoy escorted by the Shoho will leave for Babeldoab as soon as the units are loaded. Most of my DD's that can upgrade in early 42 are almost complete. I left myself a little short of DD's to support TF's, but now I've increased my ASW escorting capacity significantly.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/23/2010 1:48:13 AM)

Feb. 16/42 Update:

Malaya: 107 mines were cleared today at Singapore. Unfortunately I lost the DMS W-5 which hit a mine, ironic.

The Philippines: Bataan was bombarded again. I'm waiting for some reinforcements to arrive and then the ground assault is on again.

Borneo: Pontianak was captured today by shock attack at small cost. Japanese casualties were 67 compared with 398 for the Allies.

China:

Wuchow was air and ground bombarded, a total of 115 Chinese troops were casualties. I finally destoyed the small 18 gun force that was running around around Loyang. I used Sally's to bomb it. If you use ground troops to try and eliminate small holdouts like this you are wasting your time, all they do is retreat. I'm glad this force is finally dealt with, that leaves only one more in my rear. My main army southeast of Yenan forced out the Chinese unit which retreated to Sian. East of Yenan I shock attacked a Chinese force causing 1376 Chinese casualties to my 249. The Chinese army retreated to Yenan.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/23/2010 1:53:04 AM)

Feb. 17/42 Update:

Malaya:

Singapore harbour is now mine free, so the transport fleets are moving in to start loading for the Sumatra invasions.

The Philippines:

Bataan bombarded again for the loss of 5 Japanese troops. Allied losses were 154 and I notice more guns and vehicles are being destroyed. I'm slowy grinding away at the gun and vehicle superiority of the Allies.

China:

Wuchow was shock attack and captured today at the loss of 23 Japanese casualties to 2221 for the Chinese. Wuchow requires a 50 AV garrison for those Japanese players that may not know.

Nothing else of any import happened during the turn.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (2/23/2010 2:07:15 AM)

Feb. 19/42 Update:

Sub Ops:

A bad day for me. The AO Shiretoko Maru fully laden with fuel for Babaldoab was sunk south of Takao by the SS Sargo. I made the mistake of escorting with just 2 SC's. I will make sure all important ships are escorted by DD's exclusively in the future with the higher experience ratings. Also the CL Kashii east of Kuantan was torpedoed by the SS KXIV. The cruiser should survive and make Singapore for repairs. The sub received 2 DC hits in return, but no major damage I'm sure. At Lae, in shallow water, the SS S-23 launched a failed 4 torpedo salvo at a xAKL transport and was treated to 7 DC hits, again no serious hits were recorded. I'm pretty sure the subs all took minor damage, abysmal ASW results continue.

One thing I have noticed is that Lily's and Sally's at 2000ft on ASW patrol have been effective locating and getting some air attacks in on the Allied subs. I have no idea on whether any are actually being hit, but at least is appears to be doing something.

The Philippines:

Bataan bombarded again. Allied casualties were 172, including more guns and vehicles, to Japan's 2 guns and 3 vehicles.

Feb. 20/42 Update:

Just a teaser, but my whole northern China strategy has failed to lack of recon on my part. The 30 unit Chinese army I had cut off around Sian is 2/3's across the river to safety. I had no clue it was moving, no movement ticks had appeared until this turn. I thought supply was an issue and that's why it wasn't moving. I'm crushed that a good strategy has unravelled due to my ignorance of the game mechanics. I'm sure Smeulders is patting his back for a brillant withdrawal [8|], but on my end it never would have happened had I known he was withdrawing. Lesson learned, recon everthing, every day! [:@] That puts 45 Chinese units around Sian, no way I can take it now. I will pull back, rethink what to do next and try to stop making these mistakes which are killing me, and bailing out my opponent time after time.

Very interesting to watch you pursue china here.  Too many AAR's leave this alone.  I've tripped over myself so many times in this area, so watching this with considerable interest.

Thanks!

Just got caught up on your AAR. As for the 30 unit army. It would still have taken plenty of supply via the northern hex over the river. Supply flows fairly liberally in the game. If you click on the R button you would see that the adjacient hex to the north has a road network. He would have had to been much further away to feel a supply pinch. They have toned it down but supply (IMHO) flows too easy over rough, wooded and mountain terrain for my liking. Course it works both ways so it is a wash.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Empire of the Rising Lemon? SqzMyLemon (Japan) v Smeulders (Allies) (3/11/2010 7:55:33 PM)

Wow, has it been this long since I've updated? There is a black hole consisting of a week in game time, think of it as the dark ages of WitPAE. I should be back on track, so I will start posting regular updates again.

We have just completed the turn for Feb. 27/42. A few things have happened in the meantime, but I will use screenshot updates to bring who's been following this AAR back up to speed. A quick synopsis. Sumatra has been invaded, Palembang is in Japanese hands. The Ambon invasion force is 3 days out. China is quiet except in the south, where I am pushing Chinese forces back. I'm probing much more with air units in the DEI, but Smeulders looks like he's holding his air assets close to his chest in preparation for the defence of Java. I'm consolidating the Solomon's and troops continue to press on towards Port Moresby. All will be much clearer in the screenshots.

I will start posting first of the month production figures from now on, starting with March 1/42. Production expansion of some aircraft is really starting to kick in, building up my pools nicely.

The naval yard expansion program is roughly a month away from completion. Tokyo now sits at (27) x 167 and Hiroshima at (36) x 198.

Vehicle assembly expansion at Yokohama sits at (8) x 12 an increase of +10

I've started a modest HI expansion program, repairs are as follows:
Wenchow 11(4) an increase of +5
Shanghai 121(4) an increase of +5
Saigon 20(5) an increase of +5
Singapore 24(11) not really an expansion, but I had turned off repair previously to build up supply. I'm also repairing the shipyard which sits at 34(16)

I'm looking for the transports that can be converted to tankers to save them from being sunk. I haven't gone through them all yet, I need to head back to Mike Solli's AAR to find out which ones they are. I've been coverting the 170 and 795 capacity xAKL's to either ACM's or PB's depending on my needs. Most of my destroyer upgrades for 1/42 are completed. Increases in my ASW assets will significantly improve protection for my important transport TF's.

Submarine losses are down markedly, due to changing routes and using bombers for ASW. I may not be sinking any Allied subs, but the aircraft are significantly suppressing them now and getting in some bombing attacks.

Initial Screenshots...more to follow later this evening.
